00:00Trump VP closes in on Newsom in Deep Blue State.
00:04While 2028 seems a long way off, the presidential race is already underway behind the scenes.
00:10A new poll out of Deep Blue, New Jersey, finds Vice President J.D. Vance running unexpectedly close to California Governor Gavin Newsom.
00:18A surprising number of New Jersey voters say they'd back Vance over Newsom in a hypothetical 2028 race.
00:24The SoCal Strategies poll of likely voters shows the governor barely ahead, 43% to 42%.
00:31A much tighter margin than Kamala Harris' six-point win in 2024 or Joe Biden's 16-point landslide in 2020.
00:39For decades, New Jersey has been a reliable Democratic base, voting for the party's presidential candidates in every election since 1992.
00:47President Donald Trump has spoken about the idea of a third term, even though the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution would legally prevent it.
00:56However, he has dismissed the idea of running for vice president, describing it as too cute.
01:02While speaking with reporters, Trump suggested the possibility of Vance running for president with Secretary of State Marco Rubio as his running mate, according to Politico.
01:10In a recent interview on the New York Post's PodForce One, Vance dismissed speculation about a 2028 run as premature, though he left open the possibility of considering the idea.
01:23My attitude is that the American people elected me to be vice president, Vance said.
01:28I'm going to work as hard as I can to make the president successful over the next three years and three months.
01:33And if we get to a point where something else is on offer, let's handle it then, he added.
01:38The Democratic Party has yet to announce its potential candidate for 2028.
01:43However, Kamala Harris has hinted at a possible run, telling the BBC that she is not done with U.S. politics.
01:50Newsom also confirmed he is weighing his options, noting that he may make a decision after the 2026 midterm elections.
01:58Yeah, I'd be lying otherwise, Newsom said on CBS News Sunday morning when asked whether he would consider a presidential run after 2026.
