00:00Time to talk some hockey on the early line on a Wednesday and exciting times last night.
00:05A lot of games on the card last night, Joe, which included a high-scoring Bruins game where they knocked off the Maple Leafs.
00:11And by the way, the Maple Leafs 1-4 on the road, 8-8 on the season.
00:15Certainly not hot times there in Canada, but out of these games that we saw last night, Joe,
00:20did anything rise up to you and say, oh, that's an interesting outcome or you enjoyed that game?
00:24Or heck, Joe, you even won a bet on last night.
00:27Well, I was impressed with the Avalanche at home taking on the red-hot Anaheim Ducks.
00:35Anaheim, I mean, what, 11 wins?
00:37Nobody saw that coming here.
00:40The Avs have, you know, they've had their moments here.
00:43But my goodness, a 4-1 thrashing of the Ducks last night at home was pretty darn impressive here.
00:51Colorado looks like they're starting to kick it into another gear here.
00:56But I like this Anaheim team, but they are becoming one of those public darlings right now,
01:02which means we've got to look for spots to fade them in the near future.
01:05By the way, a couple big road wins last night, Joe.
01:09By the way, the Kings headed and took on the Canadians.
01:11The Canadians came in this game 10-3, decimated them 5-1, a big night last night.
01:16Kopitar got an assist, and he was a plus three.
01:18But how about this one, too?
01:20The Hurricanes, one of the teams you think is going to factor into the Eastern Conference Championship,
01:23the Capitals went on the road and blasted them 4-1 last night with Carlson picking up a couple assists there for the Capitals.
01:30Yeah, didn't see that one coming.
01:33And the Canadians, I mean, Montreal cracks me up here, Donny,
01:37because how many more one-goal games are they going to win here?
01:41They have a majority of their games they have won have been of the one-goal type.
01:47So, you know, listen, we've seen that over the years, too, right?
01:51But you get a lot of puck luck, and you get, hey, you win those one-goal games.
01:55It's like, all right, congratulations, like in the NFL where, all right, all right, Kansas City,
02:00how many one-score games are you actually going to win until it starts going the other way?
02:05You got to wonder that about the Canadians as well.
02:08By the way, you don't get those, like, true bottom feet.
02:10It's like, granted, there are some teams that are really bad, but in hockey, it feels like everybody's always in the race.
02:14You look at the Atlantic Division, like the Canadians, the Bruins, the Senators, the Lightning, the Red Wings,
02:18and then you finally get to the Florida Panthers down there, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
02:22It's like, well, the Sabres is not really that good of a team, but let me ask you a question on this.
02:28Metropolitan Division, the Pittsburgh Penguins, not a lot of expectations coming into the season,
02:32opened up well, lost their last two games.
02:34Is they just going to fade out because they're just too old to play an entire NHL season?
02:38Like, what's up with the Penguins?
02:39Any legitimate chances for them to make the playoffs this year?
02:42Listen, when people have been screaming about the Penguins to unload, you know, the aging stars that they have in those contracts
02:52and start to rebuild, that's been going on for a very, very long time.
02:57But the problem is, you know, the Penguins have a hard time moving on.
03:02And the fan base, you know, let's face it here, they're going to, it's put up or shut up time here for the Penguins.
03:10They've got to decide what they're going to do.
03:12I mean, Malkin is a 39-year-old center, and you're still paying this guy millions of dollars?
03:18Like, you've got to figure out when do we hit the reset button here in Pittsburgh.
03:23You're like Malkin, you got Letang, you got Crosby.
03:26It feels like I was, like, running around in middle school at this point by the time they started their career.
03:30And they're still actually playing at this point.
03:33So I find that interesting to myself as I look at it and say, ooh, how can they get through it?
03:37Or how can they play this year?
03:38And we'll see how it turns out.
03:39But it certainly starts.
03:40And also, Marc-Andre Fleury, correct me if I'm wrong, they just basically brought him back for the preseason
03:44and have him play a couple games to get a standing ovation.
03:48How about that?
03:49Yeah, you got to love it too, man.
03:51You got, I mean, some of these guys, though, it's like time to go, man.
03:55Like, you got to go.
03:56I will say this.
03:57I don't think the Penguins have anyone else other than Ryan Graves under contract to 28-29.
04:04So they will have really zero long-term commitments coming up.
04:08And now, just maybe now is the time to hit the reset button for Pittsburgh.
04:12Hit the reset button this morning right here on the early line.
04:15Let's talk some more hockey and bring in Andrew McInnes here.
04:18This man knows hockey.
04:19He knows he's ready to go.
04:20And also, I got a lot of questions for him this morning.
04:23Andrew, how's it going this morning?
04:24Good morning, guys.
04:26I'll tell you what, a lot of surprises so far this NHL season.
04:29We're waiting to see things change.
04:32You know, as a Montreal Canadiens fan, I would love to see Crosby request the trade,
04:37go somewhere like Montreal.
04:39But if they keep winning, they're not going to get traded if he keeps winning.
04:43This Pittsburgh team's looking pretty good, guys.
04:46Absolutely.
04:46But, okay, so we got you on tonight.
04:48Seventh-third, like, the center of the universe revolves around the Philadelphia Flyers.
04:51We know this, Andrew.
04:53Edmonton and Philadelphia tonight.
04:54Philadelphia is an underdog here.
04:57Edmonton hasn't played that great yet.
04:58Any expectations tonight for this game?
05:01Me being a Flyers fan, what do you see tonight between Edmonton and Philadelphia?
05:06So, Donnie, the only thing I'd be worried about in this one is that the Oilers finally kind of broke off
05:11after playing horribly for a little while.
05:13They finally got things together.
05:14Now, the funny thing is, we can argue, is that they won a game they probably didn't even still deserve to win.
05:22They were down against Columbus.
05:24They were big favorites.
05:25And, you know, if you want to talk about fade the public, everybody in the world took Edmonton against Columbus in that one.
05:32But now this is a spot here where I want to wait until a team finally wins one and gets some goals on the board.
05:39Then I want to back them.
05:41So, I hate to do it to you, Donnie, but I think the offensive output is enough to do it for this Oilers team against Philadelphia.
05:49Like, a team like Columbus kind of worried me against Philly or against Edmonton just because they have the offensive output.
05:56But Philadelphia near the bottom of the league and dangerous chances created, I hate to do it to you.
06:02But I think Edmonton somehow can build momentum off that win, even though it was ugly.
06:07And they'll get it done tonight in Philly.
06:08So, I hate to do it to you, Donnie.
06:11All right.
06:12Let me just see.
06:13Oh, okay.
06:14The Rangers are on the road.
06:15So, we should probably back them, right, Andrew?
06:17Is that how it works?
06:18I mean, Tampa's been good, but the Rangers have been much better on the road than at the Garden, strangely enough.
06:25Yeah, sounds about right to me, Joe.
06:27You check the location, check where this game's being played, and you lock in your bets.
06:32You know, honestly, hats off to the Rangers for finally winning one at MSG.
06:36But I'm right there with you.
06:37I think this is a really good number on the New York Rangers.
06:41And, you know, a lot of times that we talk about fading a team first game back after a road trip, and I talk about maybe if it was an unsuccessful road trip, you wouldn't want to fade that team.
06:51But if it was a successful road trip, this could be a particular spot where we do see Tampa Bay be a little bit light, be a little bit flat.
06:59I think it could be a good spot to back the New York Rangers.
07:01And, you know, guys, I know that we can say sometimes a team can build positive momentum, even if they didn't come off a win against the most impressive team.
07:10I don't care who the Rangers beat in their previous game.
07:14It might have been the Nashville Predators.
07:16I don't care.
07:17I think momentum is on their side.
07:18I like this spot for them.
07:20He's Andrew McInnes.
07:21Thanks for joining us on the Early Line.
07:23Talk a little hockey.
07:24We'll talk to you again soon, Andrew.
