00:00Thank you for calling Visa Security Department.
00:03I am from the National Crime Agency.
00:05If you talk to me, then I will guide you.
00:08Every day, we're being bombarded by scammers.
00:11I just have three thousand bombs.
00:13How much I have to take?
00:16But we are fighting back.
00:18Working with ethical hacker Jim Browning, who hacks into scam call centres,
00:23we can tap into this criminal network and track down the victims to stop the scammers
00:29before they steal.
00:31You should not buy those gift cards.
00:32You're going to lose your money.
00:33What was that? What was that?
00:34I can assure you that nothing they're saying is true.
00:37You're on the phone to a scam, Amalok. You need to hang up the phone.
00:40Hang up!
00:42This is Scam Interceptors.
00:49On today's episode...
00:51Go to the Tesco. You need to go there right now.
00:54OK.
00:55We race to stop a man from being bullied into buying gift cards for scammers.
01:00Oh, a second in there.
01:02They're asking him for a thousand pounds.
01:04He's saying he can't afford it.
01:05A thousand pounds.
01:06Like, I can genuinely feel my heart racing.
01:08This is really so tight.
01:11This man is so hooked in.
01:17You can check your phone.
01:23In the Glasgow hub, we've tuned into a scam that's got us seriously concerned.
01:30Yes, I'm calling from the National Crime Agency.
01:33National Crime Agency.
01:35Yes.
01:36This call centre is pretending to be the National Crime Agency.
01:41The UK's lead agency fighting against organised crime and fraud.
01:46This scam is probably one of the most devious that we've ever seen on the show.
02:01So, it starts with this robocall that says to you that your National Insurance Fund has been compromised
02:05and you need to press 1 to speak to the National Crime Agency.
02:08Once you start speaking to them, they tell you that your identity is being used for criminal activity
02:12and that you need to prove who you are to them.
02:15Now, the way you prove that is by going out and buying gift cards
02:19and the moment the codes on those gift cards are shared, your money's gone.
02:22But this scammer isn't anything to do with the NCA.
02:30We know he's actually sat in a call centre in the Indian-administered city of Srinagar.
02:39However, he's already convinced the man he's talking to
02:42that his national insurance number has been stolen by fraudsters.
02:52The scammer claims he's proceeding with what he's calling an alternative dispute resolution, or ADR,
03:11to protect the man's national insurance number, secure his funds and prove he isn't a criminal.
03:18Of course, we know he's actually trying to steal the man's money.
03:23The officer assigned you for a case is Michael Tiazo.
03:27They will call you from the police station shortly, so you will get your name out of the case.
03:33OK.
03:37Yeah.
03:38I can't believe they're telling this person they're now going to be speaking to a real police officer
03:42when, in fact, it's just another scammer.
03:44It's unbelievable how they work.
03:46This second scammer will claim to be an officer Michael Tiazo from the victim's local police station,
03:53tasked with investigating the apparent fraud.
03:57The so-called Michael Tiazo now has the man on the line.
04:10OK.
04:11The local police department has investigated and we believe this is the case of identity theft.
04:20We found four business bank accounts in which 26,000 pounds, which has been used for money laundering and drug trafficking.
04:27Which totally seems suspicious because all accounts are registered under your name and your national insurance number.
04:36So you're claiming that you have nothing to do with it, right?
04:39Yeah, right, right. I don't know.
04:41The man is being told that over 20,000 pounds has been criminally spent from bank accounts in his name, leaving him in the frame.
04:51We need to try and warn him before the scammers convince him the only way to get out of trouble is to hand them his money.
05:00But all we've got at the moment is the mobile number.
05:02That's it. That's all we've got to go on, I'm afraid.
05:04So, Harleen, you've been listening and you've been doing some digging behind.
05:06Have we managed to find out anything more about where this person could be located?
05:10So I picked up a partial postcode of Manchester and then when Aaron plugged his mobile number into WhatsApp,
05:17it came up with a picture of Salfords.
05:19Yes, Salford.
05:20Right, so it literally says the word Salford.
05:22Yes, and it looks to be from the university, potentially.
05:24Fantastic. Great spot. In that case, I think we need to get the GIs to at least the general area until we can find out a bit more about where he could be.
05:34As the victim is on his phone to the scammer, he either won't answer or our call will alert the scammer to our presence.
05:43So, we dispatch the ground interceptors or GIs to Salford, so if need be, we can try and stop him in person.
05:51I'm familiar with the area. I've got a lot of routes and connections around here, which is a benefit to knowing the roads.
06:04While Lauren and Nathan head 25 minutes away to Salford, the scammer is ruthlessly ploughing on.
06:11And you are using four credit cards in the UK.
06:18Yeah, I use, I have four credits, but from my Turkish account.
06:23Okay.
06:24Turkish.
06:25It's Turkish.
06:26Just trying to pick out as many clues as we can as to who this man is. We can find an address for him.
06:30Uh-huh.
06:31So, how much is the credit limit on these credit cards?
06:35I don't use very often.
06:38I have nearly £30,000 for all of them.
06:45We know they're asking these questions about the credit limit to see how much the scammer can potentially get their hands on.
06:52What do you do in the UK?
06:53I'm an international student.
06:54Okay.
06:55I'm studying in Salford University.
06:57I think he said Salford University.
07:03The man has confirmed that he's a student at the University of Salford.
07:08But without his name, we can't find his address.
07:14So, we need to go ahead and secure your identity first by doing some legal transactions so that we can highlight those transactions in the courthouse that these credit cards belong to you.
07:26And the two bank accounts nationwide and Monzo belongs to you.
07:29Okay?
07:31I am going to send you the name of the gift cards which you have to purchase.
07:35The scammer is now convincing the man that to prove the credit card accounts really belong to him, he must carry out transactions using them, buying gift cards and then sending photos of them and their unique codes to the scammers.
07:50If the man gets that far, he'll never see his money again.
07:57All right, give us an address.
07:58Give us an address.
07:59Give us an address.
08:00There.
08:01We've got a notepad.
08:02There's the details.
08:03Here's the details.
08:04That means once we give you the new national insurance card...
08:07Oh, two months in UK.
08:09M50.
08:12Got it, got it, got it, got it.
08:13What credit cards with you?
08:16From the scammer's computer notepad, we think this man's name is Jarmer.
08:20And with his postcode on the screen too, we can try and search for his address.
08:27He's in student accommodation, guys.
08:30Right.
08:31So GI straight to there.
08:34The ground team are being updated.
08:39And can head to the man's halls of residence.
08:42I thought they were going to tell us that he'd just left the house.
08:44The problem is, when they get there, they're going to be looking at a student accommodation that's got maybe 700 apartments.
08:52And Jarmer will likely need our help soon as the scam is still progressing.
09:01And we need to convert some of your transactions in the form of currency vouchers.
09:07And you need to register those currency vouchers to the NCA legal team.
09:10And with that, your accounts will be proved legal.
09:14And all the things will get sorted out, OK?
09:17The currency vouchers the scammer is referring to are actually gift cards, which Jarmer is being told to buy.
09:25I can't understand on the phone.
09:28My English is not enough for that.
09:30Sorry about that.
09:31He doesn't understand.
09:32He's saying, I can't understand you on the phone.
09:34If you want, I can come to the police station.
09:37But there is a warrant under your name.
09:40If you directly come to the station, we are not liable to go with the ADR protocol then.
09:46That means we need to take you under custody directly.
09:49And we need to seize each and everything which is linked with your national insurance number.
09:54Scare tactics they're giving this man.
09:56They're saying if he goes into the police station on his own, he's going to get arrested.
10:00Complete lies.
10:01By claiming the alternative to buying the gift cards to supposedly clear his name, his immediate arrest, the scammers are trying to frighten the man into following their system.
10:16The GIs are 20 minutes away.
10:21In the eyes of law, you are the prime suspect in this case.
10:26So we are helping you.
10:28Yeah, okay.
10:30What do you want to do now?
10:35Let me know which is the nearby supermarket store at your place.
10:39Like Asda, Lidl, Tesco, Sainsbury.
10:41Tesco, Sainsbury.
10:43Tesco, Sainsbury.
10:46And maybe Aldi.
10:48Yeah, okay, wonderful.
10:50The scammer needs to convince Jarma to leave his flat and head to the local supermarket.
10:57We update the ground team, who are now 12 minutes away from where he lives.
11:03Hey guys, this is going to be a massive race against time for you to get there before this man goes and buys these gift cards.
11:10Right, okay.
11:12Go to the Tesco, and you need to look for the gift card section.
11:16Right, he's literally being sent out to a local Tesco to buy these gift cards now.
11:21You've got to get to Salford ASAP.
11:23I know that way quite well, because I literally went, I think I went to the same university of this guy.
11:27I think I know which Tesco you'll be going to.
11:29Fantastic, Lauren. If that's what's happening, you might have to intercept there.
11:32Okay.
11:33This is going to be tight guys, drive as fast as you safely can, okay?
11:35Yep, yep, yep.
11:36Cheers guys.
11:38Okay, we'll keep you updated.
11:42Lauren and Nathan continue to the man's halls, but will divert to the local Tesco if needs be.
11:49I can genuinely feel my heart racing.
11:53You need to keep those cards with you.
11:55He's making them take all four of his credit cards with him.
11:57So they're sending them out to Tesco and then they're probably going to send them to other shops to make it less suspicious.
12:04Unbelievable.
12:06That could make the ground team's chase much more difficult.
12:09I think they're going to be ten minutes away.
12:12And where's the Tesco's in relation to the university?
12:16See, see, I'm going to make you understand.
12:18Nine minute walk.
12:19Okay, nine minute walk.
12:21We think he's still there at the moment.
12:22How much?
12:23How much?
12:24How much?
12:25I have to pay.
12:29We need to purchase gift cards for £1,000.
12:30How much?
12:31£1,000.
12:32Oh my God, £1,000.
12:33They're trying to get £1,000 off this man.
12:39You are not giving your money to anyone.
12:41You will get that back by today evening.
12:43Okay?
12:44Oh my gosh.
12:45Just check your WhatsApp first.
12:46You have received a message from the National Crime Agency legal team.
12:51So they're now sending a WhatsApp message to him, allegedly saying he's communicating with the law enforcement agencies.
12:57Yeah, they're claiming they've got a National Crime Agency fake account on WhatsApp.
13:00So they're sending messages from that just to, again, further this kind of theatre of the whole scam
13:04and make him really believe the story that he's being told.
13:06Oh, sickening, Nick. This man is so hooked in.
13:09They're asking him for £1,000.
13:10He's saying he can't afford it.
13:12£1,000.
13:14Unable to reach him by phone, the ground interceptors are our only chance of stopping this man,
13:20handing his money to the scammers.
13:24They're close, they're close.
13:27GIs are close.
13:30They are now a nine-minute drive away.
13:33I feel really nervous that in this moment we're the only people that are actually able to get to him,
13:41to stop him from leaving the house and exchanging his money.
13:47GIs, where are the GIs?
13:54Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
13:55While the scammer persists with persuading Jama to leave his home...
14:05You are not giving, you are not giving your money to anyone.
14:08When the GIs, come on.
14:10Come on.
14:11It's always a red light, isn't it?
14:12I know.
14:13It's always a red light.
14:16Lauren and Nathan are slowly making headway.
14:19We're about eight minutes away and it's really a race against the clock at this point.
14:24God, I feel a bit anxious now as well.
14:26Are you anxious?
14:27Oh, no.
14:32Listen to me.
14:34Listen to me.
14:36I explained both the things to you.
14:39I explained both the things to you.
14:41You know, I am not very sure about it.
14:45I think he's having doubts.
14:46He is having doubts.
14:47Definitely.
14:49It's helping us.
14:50It's drawing us out, isn't it?
14:51Otherwise, you can come directly to the station.
14:54Okay?
14:55Today, I must go to university.
14:56You know, what can I do?
15:00I'm confused.
15:02I get nervous.
15:04Listen to me.
15:06Listen to me.
15:07This is how ADR protocol works.
15:11Unfortunately for the ground team, the man still hasn't left his home.
15:16Another red light, obviously.
15:21Mark, have you got an update from GIs?
15:22How far away are they?
15:23Between five and six minutes is my best guess.
15:26It's just red light after red light.
15:31If the ground team arrive and Jama has left his apartment, tracking him down won't be easy.
15:37We don't even know what this man looks like.
15:41We've got nothing.
15:42It's going to be a busy area.
15:43I was trying to find him on social media.
15:45I think that's not his name.
15:46Because that's not a Turkish name.
15:48Right.
15:49And he said he was Turkish.
15:50But it's the only name we have to go on at the moment.
15:54Meanwhile, the scammer, worried he might be losing Jama, has pulled another trick from up his sleeve.
16:02Just hold it a moment.
16:05Unit 1, this is Officer Michael Teozo from PlayStation.
16:10Well, the DMC 701089 is in confusion that why I'm doing this ADR protocol over the phone.
16:17Just recording his law statement whether he wants to do with it or not.
16:21Otherwise, I'm transferring the case back to you people so that you can do the procedure cardically.
16:29Is that a British voice that I heard?
16:33It's real recordings of a police chase that they're using to create this.
16:36There's literally nothing to do with any sort of fraud.
16:38These scammers go to unbelievably extreme lengths to try and convince their targets of their lies.
16:46Three minutes away.
16:47We're really not far at all.
16:49Three minutes?
16:51Yep.
16:52Oh, this is to the wire.
16:53Come on.
16:55Mister, do you want to go with the ADR protocol?
16:57Just let me know for the final time, because we don't have much time to do with this case.
17:03Yeah, okay.
17:04All right, so how much time it's going to take you to reach Tesco?
17:10You need to go there right now.
17:12I must go there and take some time.
17:15Yeah, I know.
17:16I must go directly there.
17:19Despite his doubts, it sounds like the man is close to leaving.
17:24We need the ground team to get there before he does.
17:29There's the keys.
17:30Top corner?
17:31Yeah, I think give it two minutes away.
17:32Oh, I think they might get him coming out of the building.
17:35Yeah, I'm giving you five minutes.
17:38Nick texts the ground team to keep heading for the victim's halls of residence.
17:43But fast.
17:45Oh, God.
17:50He's still inside.
17:51Okay, good.
17:52If you want to take a cab, whatever will be the fear of the cab, you can let the National Crime Agency or the WhatsApp as well.
17:59Don't get a cab. Don't get a cab, because then we'll lose him.
18:01And the cab charged me five pounds, ten pounds, whatever it is.
18:04So we will pay you back that either, okay?
18:06Oh, my God, it's so nasty.
18:08Pay for your own taxi so I can scam you.
18:11The scammer is pulling out all the stops to get his victim to leave to buy the gift cards.
18:18Uh, text.
18:22With the ground interceptors hitting red light after red light.
18:28Even though it's unlikely the victim will read it, as he's deep in the scam, Nick tries to send him a warning text.
18:34We need to make transactions on every card.
18:40The ground team edge closer.
18:45I think it's this here and the left here.
18:59Pajamas preparing to leave.
19:00Do not get this man's money.
19:05He's not even read the text.
19:06No.
19:07Meanwhile, you don't need to mute, disconnect, or hold.
19:09The GI's...
19:10The GI's are there.
19:11They're there in the road.
19:12They're looking for the address, it seems.
19:15They must be no more than metres away.
19:17God, come on.
19:18This is going to be so tight.
19:19There's literally no parking.
19:21We need to make transactions on every card.
19:24All right?
19:25Here?
19:26Left?
19:27Here?
19:28Do not worry.
19:29I'm not giving your money to anyone.
19:36Hi.
19:37Hello.
19:38How are you doing?
19:39Yes, I'm with you.
19:40Lauren is now at Jama's halls of residence building.
19:44There's no way of us getting in.
19:47There's no buzzers either.
19:52Let me know once you're ready, okay?
19:54I'm going to the elevator now.
19:57It sounds like Jama is seconds away from leaving to buy the gift cards for the scammers.
20:02I am going to be over the phone till the time we complete the protocol, okay?
20:09The ground interceptors now have access to what they think is his accommodation building.
20:15The GIs are at reception just now.
20:17They're at reception.
20:18GIs are at reception, guys.
20:19GIs are at the reception.
20:20So, the good news is he's not left his apartment yet, but the bad news is we have no way of getting to his address within the building because it's behind all sorts of key cards.
20:32So, we're just kind of waiting it out and trying to see if we can spot somebody leaving.
20:39Literally just a waiting game at this point.
20:42We hope that this is the only exit.
20:46If you are going to spend $4,000, $5,000, $10,000 today, you will get each and every pet back, so do not worry.
20:55Come on.
20:56Come on.
20:57Come on.
21:08Nothing, Mark. Nothing from GIs.
21:09Go up, Dick.
21:16We know they've got there with the details that we have, but we don't know if that's even his name.
21:22What was that? What was that?
21:23That was a puzzle.
21:27That was the lift.
21:32That was the lift.
21:33Is he leaving?
21:34He's leaving.
21:35He's leaving.
21:37No.
21:38You want it, Mark?
21:39Yeah.
21:40Good man. Update the GIs.
21:44So, he's in a lift.
21:45It means he's leaving.
21:46He's going to be walking towards Tesco's.
21:47We don't even know what this man looks like.
21:49Hello.
21:50Yes, I'm with you.
21:51There's only, like, one building for this place, isn't there?
21:54Okay.
21:55They know that he's leaving the building.
21:56Okay.
22:01Lauren.
22:02Excuse me.
22:03Excuse me.
22:04Excuse me.
22:05You're not called Jarma, are you?
22:06No, no.
22:07I don't call Jarma.
22:08Okay.
22:09Okay.
22:10He's not called.
22:11That can't be.
22:12Yes, I'm with you.
22:13Could that be?
22:14I don't know.
22:21He's outside.
22:24Oh, he's outside.
22:25God, he's walking.
22:28He looks...
22:30Excuse me.
22:32Sorry.
22:33Just wondering.
22:35Come on, come on.
22:37Intercept.
22:41Meanwhile, I requested the National Crime Agency legal team.
22:44So that they will let you know what ADR is.
22:46I can't.
22:47Okay.
22:48This could be completely random, but are you on the phone to someone who says they're from
22:51the National Crime Agency?
22:53Yeah.
22:54That's not them.
22:55It's not them.
22:56You're on the phone to a scammer.
22:57Yes!
22:58Lauren!
22:59You need to hang up.
23:00It's not the National Crime Agency.
23:01I can explain everything in a moment, but you need to hang up the phone.
23:04Come on, Lauren.
23:05Yeah?
23:06I talk like that, but they're...
23:08They're telling you a lie.
23:09I promise you.
23:10I promise you.
23:11My name's Lauren.
23:12I work for the BBC.
23:13You need to hang up the phone.
23:16You need to hang up.
23:17Yes.
23:21Yes!
23:22Yes!
23:24Amazingly.
23:25After over an hour, the man is at last off his call to the scammers.
23:32So we basically monitor scam call centres and we've monitored your call today and realised
23:36that you've been scammed by them.
23:38You are not in any trouble.
23:39Your national insurance number has not been compromised.
23:42You haven't given any details to them or anything, have you?
23:44No.
23:45OK, fine.
23:46That's OK.
23:47I'm confused about it.
23:48I am from Turkey.
23:49They said ADR protocol.
23:50This is the protocol must do this.
23:53Some of my part said it's a scam, don't do it.
23:57But some of my part is, you know, we are foreigners.
24:02They are very professional.
24:03Yes.
24:06Are you OK?
24:07I'm very bad.
24:08Yeah.
24:09I feel very bad.
24:11So you had a gut feeling though that something wasn't quite right?
24:14I mentioned I am very nervous.
24:17I get confused.
24:18They use another communication with a kind of police.
24:24Were they on walkie talkies in the background?
24:26Yeah.
24:27So that's a big part of this scam is that they try and make it look more serious than it actually is.
24:31More serious.
24:32Police will...
24:33Yeah.
24:34But what you need to know is you're absolutely not in trouble with the police.
24:36Do not go to the supermarket.
24:37Because they were asking you to exchange your money for gift cards, right?
24:40Yeah.
24:41Yeah, no, it's all a scam.
24:42It's all a scam.
24:43I'm just really glad we caught you because we almost didn't stop you.
24:46I was like, oh, OK, because...
24:47I am so glad.
24:48No, no, no, it's OK.
24:49So what is your name if you don't mind me asking?
24:51My name is Ahmet.
24:54The name on the scammer's screen was wrong.
24:57Ahmet has been in the UK alone for two months, having left his family at home in Turkey to
25:03study for a postgrad at Salford University.
25:07Bless you.
25:08You're so welcome.
25:09You could have lost a lot today, so I'm just so glad you didn't.
25:13It's been one of the closest calls we've had yet.
25:16And Ahmet's keen to touch base with us in the hub.
25:21Hello, my friend.
25:22I'm Rav.
25:23This is Nick.
25:24I'm so pleased you are with my team, Nathan and Lauren, and they managed to help you today.
25:29Can you just tell us what were you about to do when you left your building?
25:35I'm going to use my credit cards and it was £4,000.
25:41They want me to buy gift cards.
25:44I mean, it's horrible to hear that for such a massive amount of money that you were so
25:49close to passing over to the scammers there.
25:53I asked some questions, but if you don't buy these gift cards, you will be arrested.
25:59It's horrible.
26:00It's horrible.
26:01I am so glad they were able to catch you and stop you buying those gift cards.
26:03I am so glad.
26:04Yeah.
26:05Your efforts are very precious.
26:06As I said, I'm very valuable.
26:07I want to thank you again.
26:08And I hope you will catch lots of people like me.
26:25Oh, well, listen, it's what we do.
26:28We're just so pleased.
26:29Your money is safe.
26:31My pleasure.

26:46Thank you so much.
26:47You did brilliantly.
26:48That was so incredibly close there.
26:51I know.
26:52We almost missed him.
26:53He walked through the door.
26:54We didn't think it was him.
26:55And I said, that must be him.
26:56We didn't think it was him.
26:57Because we didn't have...
26:58The name was different.
26:59Yeah.
27:00You could not have done a better job, both of you.
27:03Absolutely fantastic.
27:04Well done, both.
27:06Top work.

27:12That was so nice.
27:13Fantastic.
27:16The best bit about us intercepting in that way is because it gives them zero chance of working out what's going on.
27:22Absolutely.
27:23But that was just such an incredible team effort there.
27:25Top work.
27:26Well done, team.
