00:06There's two of me. I mean, two of us.
00:12There are two Lindsay Lohans in the public mind —
00:15the magnetic, relatable, talented actress from beloved movies
00:19and the chastised, dismissed, unreliable party girl from the tabloids.
00:23Meanwhile, the real Lindsay Lohan today is something of a mystery —
00:27one who left Hollywood for adventures in Europe and Dubai,
00:29and strives to define herself outside of the paparazzi's eye,
00:33while headlines periodically pop up to laugh at something weird she's done,
00:37and imply she wasted all of her potential.
00:40If you've heard Lindsay Lohan speak in an interview lately,
00:44you might have noticed she doesn't sound like she used to.
00:48And they crucified me for it in America.
00:50When The Parent Trap came out in 1998, the world was convinced
00:53that newcomer Lindsay Lohan really did have a twin,
00:57because her breakout performance playing two long-separated sisters was that impressive.
01:02One of the most talented people I've ever met, period.
01:04Forget that she's 11 years old.
01:06Then I actually thought there were two girls.
01:10One of the world's most promising child actresses
01:12blossomed into a beautiful young teen star whom the public followed with great anticipation.
01:17But by the early 2000s, she'd become a cautionary tale,
01:20a symbol of the dangers of child stardom,
01:22and one of her generation's much criticized bad female role models.
01:26Like her contemporaries Britney Spears and Paris Hilton,
01:29she was the target of paparazzi harassment, misogynistic backlash,
01:33and constant judgment for choices she made while still a kid,
01:37compelled to repeatedly perform contrition,
01:39and demonstrate attempts to revitalize her image again and again.
01:43Here's our take on the two Lindsay Lohans that have defined her career,
01:47and why it's time to stop reducing her to one or the other.
01:50I really like just being okay with being okay with me.
01:58Like Katie, Lindsay's character in Mean Girls, I love solving puzzles.
02:03And that's one reason I'm such a fan of this video's sponsor, Word Farm Adventure.
02:07It's such a unique game that combines word puzzles and Scrabble-style missions with
02:12landscape building, so I can sharpen my mind and flex my creativity.
02:17Check out how I've decorated the villa,
02:18complete with touches like the Queen Anne chair, tufted bed, and rosewood bookshelf.
02:22I've created kids' rooms that the Parent Trap twins would be proud of.
02:26And there are so many other amazing locations to build, like a farm.
02:31Every level of this free game is more challenging than the last,
02:34making it extra rewarding to play.
02:36Plus, the more levels you win, the more tasks you get to complete,
02:40and the quicker you get to restore the villa back to its former glory.
02:43Word Farm is seriously my ideal escape at the end of the day.
02:47So, if you want to challenge both the creative and clever parts of your brain,

03:00The first Lindsay we met was a talented and promising child model turned Disney star
03:10with the intention to have an Oscar by the age of 30.
03:13By the age of 18, she was making $7 million a picture,
03:16often for playing wholesome girl-next-door roles that made her a star people related to.
03:21Cool. I meant to say cool and then I started to say great.
03:26Looking back, we can see that her dual celebrity personalities actually began
03:29in split-personality movie roles that made her a household name,
03:33which nearly all came out before she turned 18.
03:35The 1998 remake of The Parent Trap turned the young star into a Disney sensation,
03:40thanks to her performance as separated 11-year-old twins Hallie and Annie,
03:44who meet and conspire to bring their parents back together.
03:46Annie is the prim and proper child of a London fashion designer,
03:49with an English accent that BBC America praised for the actress's age,
03:53I know how to fence and you don't, or I have class and you don't,
03:58while Hallie is the blunt, rough-round-the-edges American.
04:01I mean, come on, get real.
04:03Some of Lohan's best work comes out when she plays one twin
04:06who is pretending to be the other.
04:08My twin? Very funny. Good one, Martin.
04:11In 2003's Freaky Friday and the enduring comedy classic
04:15Mean Girls in 2004, she again embodies multiple personalities,
04:19playing both a daughter and a mother in a girl's body in Freaky Friday,
04:22Role-playing! Her idea. New therapeutic technique.
04:26Switching points of view.
04:27and a naive outcast who transforms into a cool,
04:30plastic insider in Mean Girls.
04:32I know it may look like I'd become a bitch,
04:34but that's only because I was acting like a bitch.
04:37These and other roles like in Disney's Get a Clue
04:39and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen,
04:41cemented her power as the sympathetic, good-hearted star.
04:44But seeing her onscreen as two different people in multiple stories
04:47laid the groundwork for us to see her as two real-life personalities,
04:51to perceive her as an innocent who was perhaps overly vulnerable to corruption,
04:56a wholesome girl who might drastically change as she grew up.
05:00Meanwhile, like so many other Disney stars,
05:02Lindsay's real life was a far cry from her onscreen one.
05:06Unlike other big young starlets of the era who came from established, famous parents,
05:10Lindsay's family was unstable, with a reputation for being, according to BuzzFeed,
05:15awful, intrusive stage parents that the young starlet had to support,
05:19while her father had faced multiple arrests and reportedly had abused her mother in front of her.
05:24The first day of filming Parent Shop in L.A., my dad came to see me, us,
05:29and then two feds walked in and cuffed him.
05:31Because he had a warrant, and he left the state, and he wasn't allowed.
05:35Once Lindsay's time at Disney ended, she didn't have anyone to hold her down
05:39while she was living on her own.
05:46Once Lohan came of age and started hanging with people
05:48she later said she shouldn't have been around,
05:51the Lindsay the media once cherished was gone.
05:53The new teen queen of the party scene.
05:56Lindsay's reputation was suddenly for being a partier in her group of A-list celebs,
06:00regularly crashing clubs and making new friends, as well as enemies.
06:04She felt bad about me all the time.
06:05I'm sorry, she felt offended.
06:07Soon she became the face of the fate awaiting all child stars subjected to the horrors of Hollywood.
06:12And the media and public reacted with an overwhelmingly judgmental attitude to this new Lindsay,
06:18who was lumped in with Paris, Britney, and other famous young women of the time,
06:21deemed as setting a bad example.
06:23Along with a semi-successful music career that played into her club-hopping image,
06:27she took on adult roles of women who were imperfect and messy.
06:30Maybe promiscuous or dealing with addiction,
06:32versions of Lindsay no one was ready to see or respect.
06:35I will find all of your boyfriends and I will f*** them stupid.
06:39Meanwhile, she got a reputation on set that was hard to overcome.
06:43She was consistently late to work on Georgia Rule.
06:46She was sentenced to court-ordered rehab for a total of six times between 2006 and 2014.
06:51Her legal issues were all over the press, missing court dates, two DUIs,
06:55failed drug tests, misdemeanor theft, and jail time.
06:59All over the course of only eight years.
07:01Hey, at least she showed up at all, which is more than we can say for most of her court appearances.
07:05Over 15 years, the repeating cycle of bad press, rehabilitation, and on-TV attempts to revamp
07:11her persona frequently cast Lindsay as the butt of the joke, implicitly comparing her,
07:16unfavorably, to the world's idea of the old her.
07:18Every time she got her act together, she had to come back into the spotlight and fight to
07:23redefine the conversation around her career.
07:25I didn't get in this business to be a celebrity on the cover of tabloids.
07:29I'm ready to work and I'm responsible and I can be on time, and I've learned from my mistakes.
07:34If she relapsed, the press reminded her it was always inevitable.
07:38If she found a new acting or entrepreneurial venture,
07:40the public considered it a sad attempt at staying relevant.
07:43When she went to prison in 2010 for only 14 days for violating her parole once again,
07:48Lindsay says she was disappointed that she couldn't have gotten a chance to serve the full
07:5390-day sentence, and her words about desiring the peace of prison
07:56expose just how lost and trapped she must have been feeling.
08:00Having all the chaos around me that I was so comfortable with,
08:03I somewhere inside knew and kind of wanted to go to jail.
08:10I think it was just to find some peace."
08:14Looking back at the lyrics of her single, Rumors, from her debut 2004 album, Speak,
08:18it's hard not to feel she's simply making reasonable points about why the
08:22paparazzi ought to just stop bringing her down and let her live.
08:26Can you please respect my privacy?
08:28As BuzzFeed's Saatchi Cool writes,
08:30the narrative around Lohan has always been that she squandered a tremendous amount of potential,
08:34or that her family f***ed her up before she even had a chance.
08:37But there's also the fact that, since she was a teenager,
08:40she's been under immense public scrutiny, expected to turn a huge profit in that tricky
08:45space between Disney teen dream and sex object.
08:48Looking back, it's glaring just how toxic and, by today's standards,
08:52totally incorrect the Perez-Hilton-era media's framing of Lindsay's behavior really was.
08:58They taunted her for having an eating disorder,
09:00ridiculed her relationship with Samantha Ronson by calling her Leslo,
09:04and called her Queen of the Drama for being taken to the hospital after a motorcycle came
09:08close to hitting her. A 2013 David Letterman interview with Lindsay that resurfaced in TikTok
09:13in recent months encapsulated the position Lindsay was frequently put in. The host makes her cry more
09:17than once, belittles her, and refuses to drop the subject of her addiction.
09:22Aren't you supposed to be in rehab now?
09:25We didn't discuss this in the pre-interview.
09:27Feeling scrutinized as a figure of ridicule in front of an audience that's laughing at her,
09:32Lindsay goes back and forth between playing along
09:34and asserting her humanity.
09:42I wish you'd come out with the tags on your dress, though.
09:45I know, it would have been so funny.
09:47Yeah.
09:47It's not funny because it's hurtful towards me.
09:51But no one could pinpoint exactly where Lindsay ended and the performance began.
09:56Was she really a wild girl or an addict, or just a teen who'd gotten a little carried away?
10:01In honest moments like her Oprah interview, she revealed a reflective,
10:04earnest, thoughtful person underneath.
10:06But it was only a matter of time until the next scandal hit.
10:08The Lindsay we knew and the real Lindsay were never before so far apart.
10:18While the early 2000s was quick to pick Lindsay apart,
10:21the Lindsay we see today is nearly unrecognizable.
10:24She's neither tabloid Lindsay nor Disney Lindsay.
10:27Instead, she's a mystery.
10:29So I disappeared.
10:31After the relatable girl and the wild partier,
10:33the third phase of Lohan's public identity was absence.
10:36As in the late 2010s, she mostly faded from the public eye.
10:40Lindsay lives in Dubai to avoid Hollywood press and stress,
10:43and appears to be doing all she can to find and define herself outside
10:46of the constant scrutiny of a paparazzi camera, working on her sobriety
10:50and attempting to move forward and embrace new experiences.
10:53But though many have wondered what happened to her,
10:55she has frequently come out into the public eye in recent years.
10:58For talk shows, online interviews, and profiles to support her recent ventures,
11:02including starting beauty brands, managing her younger sister's music career,
11:06taking roles here and there like in Netflix's Sick Note,
11:08showing she can be in on the joke in Lawyer.com ads,
11:11"...from getting a DUI, let's not pretend like I didn't get one.
11:15Or two, or three, or some others."
11:18and opening clubs across Greece as featured in her MTV reality show.
11:22"...it's beautiful, and it's a place for everyone.
11:25So I decided to open Lohan Beach House."
11:27The public mainly pays attention to Lohan these days,
11:30when a headline surfaces about her doing something odd.
11:33A viral video will make the rounds showing Lindsay in an awkward spot,
11:37whether it be her looking a little embarrassed dancing at her Mykonos beach club,
11:40or livestreaming an interaction with a refugee family,
11:43accusing them of child trafficking and seemingly trying to take the children.
11:47"...you're trafficking children. I won't leave until I take you."
11:54Or showcasing a bizarre accent that Lindsay says
11:57comes from a mixture of all the languages she knows and is learning,
12:00what she wants to call Lee Lohan.
12:02"...they maybe seem like Satan."
12:04Perhaps this last one isn't so surprising as we've seen that,
12:07as a child actor, she showed a flexibility with accents.
12:10"...Hally, we're totally and completely 100% different."
12:15Meanwhile, she was chastised by one group for tweeting a defense of President Trump,
12:19by another for defending Harvey Weinstein during the hashtag MeToo movement,
12:23and by another for carrying the Quran.
12:25"...I find a solace in studying not just the Quran, other religions, just like meditation."
12:30Through this fragmented collection of headlines,
12:32the modern portrait of Lindsay is confused.
12:34She seems odd because our long-standing expectations of her
12:38don't necessarily compute at all with who she actually is right now.
12:42In other words, the public does not know who Lindsay Lohan is today.
12:46On closer inspection, many of these cartoonish snapshots are,
12:50ultimately, yet more cheap shots at an easy target.
12:53"...The most bizarre video of 2018 is courtesy of Lindsay Lohan."
12:58"...Cruising the streets of an unnamed foreign country
13:00searching for Syrian refugees in peril."
13:03After Lindsay's strange responses to Weinstein,
13:05which she somewhat walked back, Rose McGowan tweeted,
13:08"...Please go easy on Lindsay Lohan. Being a child actor turned sex symbol
13:12twists the brain in ways you can't comprehend."
13:14And Lohan revealed on Instagram that her mixed feelings about the MeToo movement
13:18stemmed from how little support she received when she was victimized.
13:22It was in 2016, only shortly before the hashtag MeToo movement took center stage,
13:27that photos were published of Lindsay appearing to be attacked by her fiancé of the time.
13:31And as she wrote on Instagram,
13:32"...Not one person stood up for me."
13:34"...I've kept quiet for so long, but now I'm scared of what Igor might do to me and to himself."
13:40W Magazine's Stephanie Eckhart writes in the article,
13:42"...Lindsay Lohan has a point. Why didn't more people care when her ex-fiancé was abusing her?"
13:47Many seem to write the story off as another example of Lohan's well-documented downward spiral,
13:52but none of her eccentricities should have undermined the seriousness of Lohan's
13:56public struggle with abuse or led them to be written off as her latest antics.
14:00Whatever version of Lindsay we are seeing now is both Lindsay's.
14:04The talented actor and the hurt tabloid target at once. But really, she's neither.
14:09She's a complicated, flawed, sometimes underestimated or excessively ridiculed person
14:14who's lived through a lot of messy challenges in the public eye
14:17and still seems to be searching for her authentic self.
14:20"...I have this little five-minute journal that I've been doing every day,
14:24and it starts with a gratitude list."
14:26Looking at Lindsay Lohan's life story and film career is an exercise in humility.
14:31It's shocking to look back on just how comfortable media figures felt criticizing,
14:36mocking, and dismissing her humanity because of mistakes she made as a very young person.
14:41Yet it can be all too easy for the internet today to leap to similar patterns of sneering
14:46and wild theories about her motives. As tempting as it seemingly is to continue
14:50to confine her to one box, as we've seen, this is a dehumanizing continuation of the problematic way
14:57the starlet has been treated for so long. Lindsay herself reports that she's doing well,
15:02and looking toward a better future.
15:04"...what in your life has been serendipitous?"
15:07"...this moment right now."
15:08"...yeah."
15:09"...seriously."
15:10And it's time to start taking her word as to who Lindsay Lohan really is.
15:15This is me as I am as a person now and how my life is and how I want to move forward.
15:22This is The Take on your favorite movie, shows, and culture.
