00:00I'm willing to kiss a few frogs to find my prince.
00:05Who are the ones you meet before the one? For every fated romance and one true pairing,
00:10there are the runner-ups who burn brightly and fade away. They're not necessarily bad
00:15guys, but they're not the right guy. In romantic stories about straight women,
00:18there are five main types of red herring male love interests, and each represents a particular
00:23type of guy to be wary of, with a good reason he's not Mr. Right.
00:27Alcoholics, workaholics, commitment-phobics, peeping toms, megalomaniacs, or perverts.
00:32But these guys do fulfill an important role. They're plot devices that help push our heroine
00:37toward who she really wants. It's a Peter. I'm sorry.
00:43Red herring love interests often correspond to well-trodden fantasies of what the perfect
00:48relationship looks like. Oh my god. Monica's gonna go out with a millionaire.
00:52The problem is that when that fantasy becomes a reality, it never quite lives up to expectations,
00:57so the wrong love interest helps crystallize what the heroine really needs in a partner,
01:01rather than what society has told her she should want. Here's our take on what we learn from the
01:06five types of male love interests who don't stick around, and why sometimes fantasies should stay
01:12fantasies. Sure, he's perfect on paper, but the relationship just isn't going anywhere.

01:31A rich boyfriend is set up as a cheat code for life. He elevates you to a new social status,
01:37gets you into the best bars and clubs, takes you on the fanciest holidays, and treats you like a
01:42princess. However, what the rich guy on screen often teaches us is that money isn't everything,
01:47and definitely shouldn't be the foundational aspect of a relationship.
01:56In a number of stories, we see how wealth has the power to get people interested.
02:00What did you do today, Pete? I bought a restaurant, and I would like you to be the head chef.
02:04What? Oh!
02:05In Friends, the extreme wealth of Monica's flirtatious customer, Pete Becker, pushes her to overcome her
02:10initial lack of interest in him. When he's just a flirty customer, Monica rebuffs his advances,
02:15but after she learns how rich he is, and he bombards her with expensive gestures,
02:19she gives him a chance and actively tries to develop an attraction for him.
02:23And I'm not attracted to him at all!
02:26Still? No! It's driving me crazy!
02:29He has everything. Plus, he actually has everything.
02:33Eventually, she does feel something for him, something she would probably never have discovered
02:37if Pete weren't rich, in which case Monica likely would have trusted her gut and not dated him at all.
02:42Still, in the end, Pete's successful businessman tendency to throw himself into risky,
02:46all-consuming ventures until he dominates makes him a poor match for Monica.
02:51Well, I'm not gonna stop until I'm the ultimate fighting champion.
02:55That guy stood on your neck until you passed out.
02:59And in a number of stories where the rich guy suitor charms a more regular girl,
03:02you get a sense that the culture clash in these pairings is too big.
03:07I'm not used to people who have it all together.
03:10I think you scare me.
03:13There's also often a sense of entitlement that comes with wealth, which is never attractive.
03:17In Titanic, Rose abandons her high-society fiancé Cal for the poor artist Jack.
03:22Cal may have the money and the status to give her the perfect seeming life,
03:26but it's like he sees Rose as property rather than as a person.
03:29So you will honor me. You will honor me the way a wife is required to honor a husband.
03:34And in Reality Bites, Lelaina faces a similar decision
03:37between the bohemian musician Troy and the corporate TV executive Michael.
03:41Michael may be able to help her onto a fast track to being a successful filmmaker,
03:45but Lelaina wants to be an artist while Michael is purely driven by commerce.
03:49So it's Troy who really shares her values.
03:51It was probably a little slow and they cut it up a little.
03:54Cut it up? They cut up everything that meant anything to me.
03:57I mean, I don't even think you realize what you've done. You don't get it.
04:01Still, it's not always an easy journey to reject the considerable appeal
04:04of the red-herring rich guy with all the luxury and potential shortcuts he represents.
04:08And there are plenty of real-life examples of how that appeal can be seriously powerful
04:12and sometimes dangerous.
04:14The documentary The Tinder Swindler chronicles how conman Simon Levive convinced women
04:19to fall in love with him and take out loans for him,
04:21in large part by making them think he was a glamorous billionaire.
04:25And then he was asking me if I wanted to join them.
04:28We're traveling by private jet.
04:30The initial seduction of The Tinder Swindler's apparent wealth seemed to blind women to who he really was.
04:36It felt like stepping into a movie.
04:38Often on screen, rich guy narratives feel like Cinderella stories,
04:41so it makes sense that a variation on the rich guy is the dreamy British guy,
04:45who feels like some throwback member of the landed gentry,
04:49or at least has the cute accent.
04:50You know, I think there's an art to a picnic basket.
04:53Apricot jam would never go with the sesame cracker.
04:55Of course it wouldn't!
04:56It would go with a flaky baguette!
04:58But outside of a few escapist examples that lean into the fairy tales,
05:02stories featuring the rich guy tend to reveal that this fantasy is superficial
05:06and too good to be true.
05:07In reality, if the heroine wants to stay with this guy,
05:10she usually has to change who she is.
05:15Fun, sexy, and often clever, the bad boy seems irresistible.
05:19He lives life with an infectious playfulness that makes the heroine feel alive,
05:23and while she can see that he's not ideal relationship material in some ways,
05:28she convinces herself she can fix him.
05:30Eventually though, she's confronted with the proof that she's ignoring far too many red flags.
05:35In Bridget Jones' diary, bad boy Daniel Cleaver,
05:38who's himself based on Pride and Prejudice's bad boy Mr. Wickham,
05:41seems a lot more exciting than stuffy, reserved Mark Darcy.
05:44I'm no longer tragic spinster,
05:47but proper girlfriend of bona fide a sex god.
05:51So committed that he's taking me on a full-blown mini-break holiday weekend.
05:56But the problem with the bad boy is that he doesn't have good values.
05:59He's often after money, fun, and an easy life,
06:02so he's not going to be loyal to the heroine if someone richer or hotter comes along.
06:06And since he doesn't fully appreciate the heroine's true worth,
06:09he's not worthy of her.
06:11I'm not willing to gamble my whole life on someone who's,
06:14well, not quite sure.
06:18Thanks to this video's sponsor, the fantasy game Bloodline Heroes of Lithis.
06:23If you love unique, gacha-style games, this one is perfect for you.
06:26It has an intricate storyline where you can build your own kingdom and even manage the economy.
06:31But the best part is the way you can build a family by marrying members of different clans.
06:36Each clan has its own strengths and skills, so when you bring clans together and extend the family tree,
06:41you boost your offspring's powers. This makes the game a perfect combination of intuition and logic,
06:46which I love, and it means you never get tired of it because you can constantly develop your kingdom,
06:50and the possibilities are endless.
06:52It's also beautiful. The characters are so realistic and well-designed,
06:56with all kinds of species, from Lycan, otherwise known as werewolves,
06:59to the clan of Karg, who can transform into real dragons.
07:03You can download and play the game for free on both Android and iOS when you click the link in the description.
07:08For the next 30 days, you'll also get an exclusive starter pack worth $20,
07:13which includes gold, diamonds, and intimacy packs, because the more intimate your couples are,
07:18the more powerful their issue will be. And when you use my link, you'll also get a super rare hybrid
07:23heir, half dragonborn, half demigod, which is an amazing way to start playing.
07:31There's nothing wrong with the nice guy, but does that make him Mr. Right?
07:35Often the nice guy is a phase the heroine goes through after she's been knocked down and needs to be
07:40built up. He reminds her what it's like to be treated with respect. If the rich guy shows the
07:44heroine the stars, then the nice guy brings her back down to earth.
07:48So flaws can be good?
07:51Flows are the best part.
07:52In Sex and the City, Carrie falls for nice guy Aiden after growing weary of being taken for granted
07:58by unavailable rich guy Big. Aiden acts like the perfect partner to Carrie. Still, while Aiden's more
08:04humble, DIY, all-American life is charming, attractive, and sexy,
08:08This leather's about a hundred years old. I stripped it off an old railroad car seat.
08:13It's not who Carrie is. So as things get more serious, Carrie freaks out and sabotages the
08:19relationship. The irony is Aiden's acting exactly the way I wish Big would have behaved,
08:25and I'm behaving just like Big.
08:27In New Girl, Cece also starts dating a nice guy, Robbie, after she's feeling burned by her breakup with
08:32Schmidt and her previous history of dating attractive, but very not nice guys.
08:36So she's drawn to average-seeming Robbie for his decency.
08:40I gotta know, why him? I mean, what, what is his brand?
08:45He's just a good guy.
08:46This isn't enough to mean that Robbie is Cece's true match, but in the end,
08:50seeing Cece with Robbie actually helps her real love Schmidt better understand what's important
08:55to Cece and stop viewing her as an unattainable prize to be won.
08:59Are you still in love with Cece?
09:00No, that's the, yes, I am. It's killing me.
09:05Grey's Anatomy's Meredith Grey has her own nice guy conundrum, too, with the vet,
09:09Finn, who's kinder and less arrogant than her main love interest, Derek.
09:12But ultimately, the spark that's there with her and Derek isn't with her and Finn.
09:16You're a wonderful guy, and you may even be the better guy, but...
09:24He's the one.
09:26In recent years, there are more and more examples of the faux nice guy, as we've discussed in our
09:30nice guy video. But even when he's the real thing, the lesson of the nice guy phase is often that
09:35niceness isn't enough on its own. Rather, it should be a baseline within a relationship where there's
09:40more in common.
09:52In Gilmore Girls, Rory actually starts out with the nice guy boyfriend, Dean, but as her world gets
09:57bigger, she needs a partner who shares more of her intellectual interests or ambitions.
10:02Dean, this is about Harvard.
10:03Oh, well, excuse me, it's about Harvard. I forgot.
10:06So sometimes, the heroine just outgrows the nice guy. While she doesn't want to hurt someone who's
10:11only ever treated her well, ultimately, his niceness and her sense of obligation aren't
10:15enough to mean they should end up together.
10:17So most of the guys film and TV heroines end up choosing are pretty hot, but sometimes they're
10:32really hot. While the nice guys and rich guys may look for a minute like potential long-term options,
10:37the hot guy often feels from the start like a short-term solution. The driving force in these
10:43relationships is invariably sex, and sometimes this is important. In Friends, Rachel's first
10:48relationship after jilting Barry at the altar is with the rugged, passionate Italian, Paolo.
10:53The first time he smiled at me, those three seconds were more exciting than three weeks
10:57in Bermuda with Barry.
10:59Pre-Paolo, it looks like Ross and Rachel could get together sooner, but that would mean Rachel
11:03moving on from one long-term relationship to another without time to breathe in between.
11:08So as much as Ross hates Paolo, the fling probably helped Ross by giving Rachel
11:12that space to re-center.
11:13That Paolo thing was barely a relationship. All it really was was just, you know, meaningless
11:19animal sex.
11:21Sometimes there's a sense that the hot guy is too hot, and so too good to be true.
11:25In 30 Rock, Liz's neighbor Drew feels like the perfect guy, but he lives in a bubble created by
11:31his hotness. Since everyone has always been far too nice to him, he's like a child who barely knows
11:36how to live in the real world.
11:38Now what is this?
11:38Dr. Drew's salmon bourguignon.
11:42What is this orangey taste?
11:43Gatorade.
11:44Occasionally, the hot guy surprises the woman with hidden depth.
11:47Like when Samantha on Sex and the City expects Smith to just be a stereotypical himbo hot guy,
11:52but falls for him when he turns out to be a deep, nice person.
11:55I'm shaving my head, all right? And it's scary and awful and you can't handle it.
12:01Who says I can't handle it? Let me be here for you.
12:05Still, the hot guy can more often be disappointingly superficial, which makes sense,
12:09given that people tend to value him for his looks.
12:12In Insecure, when Issa matches with hot Felix on Tinder, he turns out to be pretty mean and critical,
12:17so he doesn't even deliver that good time she was looking for.
12:20Yeah, your hair is different in your picture.
12:23Oh, um, I like to switch it up.
12:26You ever switch it back?
12:30The perfect on paper guy can be rich, hot, nice, exciting, or all of the above.
12:35He's the guy who has every item on the heroine's checklist,
12:38and if you just look at the facts, he's probably more perfect for her than The One.
12:42But there's some ineffable reason why The One is her true match instead.
12:47It was like...
12:47Magic?
12:50Magic.
12:51In Sleepless in Seattle, Annie feels crazy for risking her relationship with her lovely fiancé,
12:56Walter, to pursue a spark with a guy she heard on the radio.
12:59Yet in the end, that instinct is driving her to the person she's really meant to be with.
13:03I don't want to be someone that anyone settles for.
13:08Walter, I don't deserve you.
13:10In To All the Boys, P.S. I Still Love You,
13:12Lara Jean is tempted to choose smart cultured John Ambrose over her jock boyfriend,
13:17Peter Kavinsky, because John actually shares far more of her interests.
13:21But giving it a try just makes her realize the depth of her feelings for Peter.
13:25Sometimes you have to kiss the wrong man to know what's right.
13:29Frozen plays with the perfect on paper love interest and the dreamy rich guy fantasy by
13:34having Anna fall for Prince Hans, a guy who seems the picture of the classic prince charming but
13:39is actually a devious schemer.
13:41Like the tinder swindler, Hans is playing the part he knows Anna will find dashing,
13:45so that he can use her for his own ends.
13:47You are so desperate for love, you are willing to marry me just like that!
13:52So in the end, this plot reveals that Anna's initial ideas about her ideal partner were
13:56naive and superficial, and that made her vulnerable to manipulation.
14:01You got engaged to someone you just met that day?
14:04Often, the rich guy, bad boy, nice guy, hot guy, or perfect on paper guy draws the heroine's
14:09interest immediately.
14:11He's clearly attractive and seems wonderful in theory.
14:14By contrast, the one might be someone unassuming,
14:17who doesn't seem so exciting or perfect at first,
14:20and probably doesn't fit the heroine's romantic expectations.
14:23Hey, my lord.
14:24Hey.
14:26Fantasies can be valuable, and maybe the one does turn out to be successful,
14:30gorgeous, or generally wonderful.
14:31But ultimately, real relationships are far more complex and unexplainable
14:35than whatever theoretical ideas we start out with about what we're looking for.
14:39Sometimes, real love doesn't make sense on paper, but does in person,
14:43and that's more exciting and interesting than any fantasy could ever be.
14:48I'm scared as hell to want you, but here I am, wanting you anyway.
15:09давно it's been murdered.
15:11Yeah.
15:11We'll be back to you.
