As Michael Jackson historically returns to the top 10 with “Thriller” and Kehlani gives Brandy her flowers, Billboard chart experts break down the correlation between Grammy nominations and artists like HUNTR/X, Alex Warren, Leon Thomas, and more, who have taken over the charts this year. Black Eyed Peas singer Taboo stopped by with his daughter to share what it was like to work in the studio with Jet on ‘Dora,’ his thoughts on the Dodgers’ huge win, and their perspectives on the diversity of artists on the Hot 100.

00:00Michael Jackson makes a holiday return to the charts as Taylor Swift still battles with K-pop Demon Hunters for the number one spot.
00:07The fact that we have multicultural representation on Top 100 from Cat's Eye to Demon Hunter, the Huntrix, I love that.
00:19Hey, what's up and welcome to the Hot 100 Show.
00:22As you can see, I got my friend Taboo and his daughter Jet stopping by a little bit later and we got a new Top 10 entry on the chart.
00:28So let's start by running it down.
00:31This is the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 for the week dated November 15.
00:37After a Halloween surge, Thriller hits the top 10.
00:45Morgan stays at number 9.
00:52Mutt moves up to number 8.
00:55All right, we got a newcomer to the Top 10 in MJ.
01:02I can't say I was ready for that, but Halloween season is in.
01:06Yeah, I don't know if newcomer's the word.
01:09Thriller was in the Top 10 in 1984, but this is the highest it's been since March of 1984.
01:15It's pretty incredible.
01:16Well, you know, it returns to the chart every year for Halloween, but this year's a whole different story.
01:20It's in the Top 10.
01:21And, yeah, it's just wild.
01:25You know, it's higher than it's been in 41 years.
01:27Yeah, it feels like it's kind of becoming like the All I Want for Christmas is You of the Halloween season,
01:32where, like, it started growing more and more each year, and this year Halloween fell on a Friday.
01:38So, like, now it's in the Top 10.
01:40It's amazing.
01:40I can already imagine, like, AI versions of Michael Jackson going, it's tough.
01:46Like, I already know it's coming.
01:48You said it.
01:49You said it, not me.
01:50But I think it's coming.
01:51Stop it, Delisa.
01:52Awaken from the dead.
01:54Yeah.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Oh, it's crazy.
01:56I mean, I will say that was my first thought, because Mariah Carey, you know, has kept going with the Queen of Christmas.
02:02I'm like, do we have a king of Halloween?
02:04It's going to be a glove coming out from a grave.
02:07I just see it.
02:07Exactly.
02:08Oh, they need to hire me, low-key.
02:09Halloween.
02:10Come on.
02:10Halloween's PR needs to hire me, because that's cute.
02:13Join Team Michael.
02:14There you go.
02:15I don't know about that.
02:16I guess I was also thinking, with the whole surgence of Thriller and Halloween, like,
02:21the way that Mariah has rocking around the Christmas tree, knocking on her door.
02:25What's the other Halloween smash, other than Thriller?
02:28Well, Dracula?
02:29It could be Tame Impala's Dracula.
02:31We'll see.
02:31But, I mean, there's a few others.
02:32There's Monster Mash.
02:33There's Ghostbusters.
02:35There's the This Is Halloween from A Nightmare Before Christmas.
02:38These are a little lower on the chart, but they don't come even close to how big Thriller is.
02:42So it's really in a league of its own, it seems.
02:44Yeah, it's like, all I want for Christmas is you gets to number one,
02:47but there's a bunch of Christmas songs every year that are two, three, four, five, six.
02:51This year, Thriller's number 10.
02:53I think Monster Mash wasn't even in the top 20.
02:56So Thriller really has it all to itself.
02:59Yeah.
03:00I do got to give an honorable mention, though, to my girl, Kim Petras.
03:03She has a whole, like, Halloween album.
03:05So I feel like she needs to be mentioned in the conversation, too.
03:08Shout out Kim Petras.
03:09Maybe next year will be her year.
03:10Who knows?
03:11And, of course, like every week, Morgan Wallen's still hanging in there with I Got Better.
03:15It's so funny because every time we do this show, I hear the song and I hear it more and more.
03:22And I get why is, I get it.
03:24I get it.
03:24It has this kind of, like, it feels a little bit nostalgic because I think it has some, like,
03:31traditional elements of, like, a craze that was, like, 2015, 2016 with these kind of, like,
03:36chain smoker-esque, like, dance tracks that are coming back.
03:40And so I really like that.
03:42And then, obviously, it's his signature twang that I think is really why Morgan Wallen is
03:46Morgan Wallen.
03:47So every week that we sit on this stage, I understand more and more why it's number nine.
03:52Yeah.
03:52And the song's really been a slow burn.
03:54Like, the album came out in May and it's just now kind of looking like it's going to peak.
03:59I mean, it peaked on country radio a month ago, but the streams are still going up.
04:03So it feels like it's a song that's probably going to be around for a while.
04:06That's crazy.
04:07I didn't know that about, like, the radio peak and it's still killing it.
04:10I mean, shout out to Morgan.
04:11For real, though, shout out to Leon with Mutt.
04:15Happy to see him go up a spot to number eight.
04:18Yeah.
04:18Huge week for Leon.
04:19Like, he, I think, six Grammy nominations he just got nominated for.
04:23He performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
04:26He was playing with Stevie Wonder and Flea and Questlove.
04:30Like, it's a great time to be Leon Thomas.
04:32Yeah.
04:33I mean, talk about a slow burn.
04:34And in terms of weeks on the Hot 100, Mutt is the oldest song in the entire Top 20.
04:40To be clear, older than Thriller.
04:42More weeks on the chart than Thriller.
04:43Yeah.
04:44But it's still going up.
04:45So, you know, this could be, like, one of the definitive R&B songs of this decade, honestly.
04:50Absolutely.
04:51I think it is.
04:51And it's great that the Grammys are finally recognizing that, too.
04:54Like, of course, he won a Grammy for Scissor Snooze, but he's finally nominated as a solo artist for the very first time.
05:01I mean, with Album of the Year and, obviously, Mutt is nominated.
05:04He was nominated in the R&B.
05:05Best New Artist.
05:06Best New Artist as well.
05:07Like, I feel like this could be his year.
05:10Between him and Ariana Grande, it's a great time to be a Nickelodeon kid.
05:13That's all I gotta say.
05:14Completely agree.
05:15I mean, and speaking of the Grammys, I have so much I can say about that, so we might need to save that till later.
05:21Let's talk about numbers 7 through 4.
05:25Folded is locked in at 7.
05:26Don't pick up your clothes.
05:29I can fold it.
05:34As is JB's Daisies at 6.
05:37Not many days.
05:38How many days till I can see you again?
05:42Men I Need at number 5.
05:44I gotta know you're meant to be the man I need.
05:49And Opalite at number 4.
05:51Now this guy's Opalite.
05:54Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
05:56Not a lot of movement in numbers 7 through 4, but we got Folded coming in at 7.
06:01And I gotta say, guys, I was at the Monica Brandy show here in LA.
06:05She came out, did it live.
06:06I was, like, shook.
06:08It really is that song.
06:10Her vocals have never sounded better.
06:13I think we've talked about this before, but Kehlani's career as an artist, we've seen her in different moments.
06:18And I think she's had so many great spots and highlights.
06:21And I think it's just a testament to how, like, time and development and really finding that perfect song, that perfect—I don't know.
06:29She's just in her pocket.
06:30She's in her lane with the song.
06:31I, too, saw her come out and perform it live at Destin Conrad, Brooklyn Paramount.
06:36And I was like, oh, she's singing down.
06:39Like, her voice just sounds pure.
06:41It sounds clear.
06:41I think that's also why it's resonating so deeply with R&B purists and fans.
06:46It's because it's just a really great crafted song.
06:49I completely agree.
06:50And, like, she's been churning out music for, like, almost a decade now.
06:54But this became her first top ten hit last week.
06:57And it really—it got the co-sign from a lot of R&B legends like Neo and Toni Braxton and Monica and Brandy and several other people who hopped on the remix.
07:07So it's really exciting that this is—it's hanging on in the top ten.
07:11Yeah, I mean, talk about huge R&B hits this year.
07:14This is also nominated alongside Mutt for a couple Grammys, Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Song.
07:21You know, if she can kind of campaign around it, if she performs folded at the Grammys this song, it's not going to be the last we see of it.
07:29Tetris, I'm going to need to talk to you because I need to see the Brandy Monica show in New York.
07:33And maybe Kehlani can come out again for that.
07:35Very, very excited.
07:38I mean, the show was definitely worth it.
07:40Delisa, you guys posted this over on IG of Kehlani giving Brandy her flowers.
07:45While you are here, I hope everyone gives you your flowers every single day of your life, okay?
07:53You deserve it.
07:55Our vocal Bible, our Black Cinderella, doing this shit since she was 15.
08:01I mean, come on.
08:02Brandy really is the vocal Bible.
08:04That was really cool to see her get, you know, some love from Kehlani.
08:08Yes.
08:08I mean, everyone knows if you want to talk about a vocalist, everybody's favorite vocalist, favorite vocalist, it's Brandy.
08:19Like, she just really and truly is.
08:21And so I think, like, to what we're talking about here, the thing that's really special about seeing this top 10, seeing how R&B is really represented, I think that moment really encapsulates, like, what this year really means.
08:33And I think it's as someone who grew up on R&B, who, like, it's almost, like, in my blood to see a moment like that is extremely special.
08:41To see Brandy and Monica get this moment to be on stage and be celebrated after such incredible contributions to the art form, it's really, really special.
08:50And then with the rest of the chart, again, not a lot of movement.
08:54Of course, we got Opalite over there at number four, Man I Need holding on to five, and Daisy's still at number six.
09:01How are we feeling about the rest of that chart?
09:03Daisy's been there for a while, but Olivia Dean, she's really on the right.
09:06She's going to be on SNL this weekend, so we could see another bump for that.
09:09And Opalite, I mean, of course, Taylor Swift songs are going to bombard the top 10 when she puts out an album.
09:15It happens every time.
09:16But usually, besides the lead single, which in this case is The Fate of Ophelia, they all kind of, you know, drop down until she makes one of them the single or sends it to radio or makes a music video, whatever.
09:27But Opalite is still in the top five more than a month after the album came out.
09:31So this song, you know, it really will take just one little remix or promotion or video or whatever to make that, you know, the next contender for number one, I think.
09:42I agree.
09:42It seems as though, like, obviously, The Fate of Ophelia is the lead single from the album.
09:46It got the music video treatment, the big radio push.
09:49But it seems as though Opalite is the single that the fans are demanding be, like, the big hit from the album, where it's still sticking around in the top 10.
09:58And it's still getting some radio airplay.
10:00The streams are through the roof for it.
10:02So I feel like Team Taylor is going to have an easy time once Fate of Ophelia has finished its run and they're ready to move on to the next single from the album.
10:10Opalite is right there.
10:11And speaking of fan demand, Xander, the fans of L.A. have been going crazy since the Dodgers won the World Series.
10:16And a little remix of East L.A. with Taboo and Will.i.am got them jumping.
10:20So from doing music with the Black Eyed Peas to with his own daughter, Taboo and Jet, at the Hot 100 show today.
10:31How you guys doing?
10:32We're doing great, man.
10:33How you feeling, Jet?
10:34Yeah, I'm feeling really great.
10:36I'm excited about this.
10:38Yep.
10:38Well, we're excited to have you here.
10:40I mean, you're on a track with your dad on Dora.
10:43That's insane for a girl your age.
10:45Like, what is it like working with your dad on this new song?
10:47Um, well, I feel like it's really fun just working with my dad and having this, like, bonding time with my dad.
10:56And, yeah.
10:57Yeah, I would also add the fact that we're able to be part of this amazing legacy, this 25 years of Dora.
11:05You know, shout out to Nickelodeon and Paramount and all the people that made this happen so that my daughter and I could live out a dream of being on the field, metaphorically, together.
11:13Yeah, most father-daughter combos don't get the, you know, go in the studio and drop new tracks.
11:18You guys got to take a listen to this.
11:19Check it out.
11:26Love the song, man.
11:27So good.
11:27And then there's five songs on the EP that's out on the 14th, right?
11:30Yep.
11:31But November 14th, we're dropping the EP, and the songs are a couple songs off of the different episodes of Dora.
11:38The one we created together, it was just magical being able to take the original Melodía, which I did by myself.
11:44Shout out to Paulina Aguirre, who also wrote on the record.
11:48And now getting my daughter in the studio and telling her, Jet, now do this ad-lib, give me some more energy.
11:54Like, it was dope being able to produce my daughter in the studio, too.
11:57Was he bossy in the studio?
11:58You got to tell me.
11:59Be honest.
12:00Um, no, not really.
12:02I don't know how to explain it, but it just felt like I was, like...
12:07Hanging out.
12:08Yeah.
12:09It was natural, dude.
12:10And what was cool was just, Jet's never been in this situation before.
12:14She's never done a record.
12:15She's never done a TV show, an animated series.
12:19And now to be able to have Dora be the first introduction to the world.
12:22I love it.
12:23And then we got to talk about just Dora in general, right?
12:25Such a massive phenomenon.
12:27Like, why do you like Dora, and how fun was it to be a part of this?
12:30Well, I really like Dora because she just, like, she brings a lot of energy to her character.
12:38And, um, she's just, like, really fun to, you know, like, if you see the episode, she, like, has this, like, bubbly energy.
12:51And she's always, like...
12:53I agree.
12:54You know.
12:54Yeah, she's definitely someone that my daughter could look at as a representation.
13:00Us being proud of multiculturalism in her family.
13:04My daughter's Mexican, native, and Filipino.
13:06And the fact that Dora represents a lot of brown kids, let alone a little matriarch, someone that my daughter could aspire and be inspired by, um, that's important.
13:17And I love you talking about that multiculturalism because you were talking before you got here about you hanging out.
13:22You... Cat's Eye.
13:23Like, girls, guys, you're a fan jet.
13:26Like, how does it feel to be, uh, you know, in this music industry?
13:29But then also, you know, looking at people like Cat's Eye and wanting to be a part of it.
13:33Yeah, I feel like it's really, it's really fun to, like, listen to music and being in the industry and making, like, a song with my dad.
13:43It's, like, the best.
13:45And saying Cat's Eye, I want to say a special message to you guys.
13:50First of all, I'm proud of you guys.
13:52Umberto Leone is a great friend of mine since we were in grade school, middle school, and high school.
13:57So, salute to my brother Umberto.
13:59And also John Janik.
14:01Salute to John Janik for his leadership and his advocacy for this beautiful group that inspires us, that keeps our spirits up when we're going to school.
14:10When I'm driving her to school, we're listening to Debut.
14:12We're listening to, um, uh, you know, Touch, freaking Gabriela, My Way, or M.I.A.
14:20We're listening to, um, um, what's another song we listen to?
14:24Like, Flame.
14:25Flame.
14:26Yeah, and, um.
14:28Shout out really quick.
14:29Who's your favorite member?
14:30Megan.
14:31Oh, we love you, Megan.
14:32Shout out to Megan.
14:33We're going to Hawaii tomorrow, so shout out to Megan.
14:36We've got to hang out at this show.
14:37And then I just want to give you some credit really quick.
14:39Yes, sir.
14:40The Dodgers.
14:41Woo!
14:41And I mean, the East L.A. song with you.
14:45I love that you guys remixed it and gave the Dodgers love.
14:48Like, how was it to do that right before the win and just see all that celebration?
14:51We L.A.
14:53We L.A.
14:56We L.A.
14:58You know, first of all, being able to be a representative of Borough Heights in East Los Angeles and then moving to the Sanguva Valley, being an Angeleno, a proud Angeleno.
15:06To be able to contribute music in 2025 after these horrible fires that we, all of us, you know, were battling with.
15:14My daughter and I live in Pasadena and Altadena area, so we were evacuated for a while, so we dealt with it head on.
15:23So we needed healing as our city needed healing.
15:25And I felt like the good medicine that we brought with the East L.A. song standing in, you know, advocacy, advocating for our immigrant relatives that were affected by the ice raids.
15:34It was important for us to bring something that's positive, something that's optimistic, and I feel like the celebration of East L.A. was a direct reflection of how we were brought up, right?
15:44Loving Borough Heights.
15:45And then on top of that, seeing that our L.A. team go into the World Series, whether you rock with it or not, because I know there's a lot of people from different parts of the world watching this and be like, yo, the Dodgers, man.
15:57We were just part to contribute this amazing song called We L.A.
16:01We had my sister, Natalia Bryant. Shout out to Natalia Bryant. That's Kobe Bryant's daughter.
16:06And we also had Maria Valenzuela, who's Fernando Valenzuela's daughter.
16:10So to be able to have two pillars of sports royalty, two matriarchs, part of our video, that was a blessing, and we're very thankful.
16:19So good, so good. And we do got to get back to the Hot 100, so I want to ask you, there's a lot of songs on our chart that you might have heard.
16:25Do you watch K-pop Demon Hunters or listen to Taylor Swift?
16:28So what did you think of the K-pop Demon Hunters movie and the song Golden?
16:33Yeah, so that's my favorite movie right now.
16:37Yes.
16:37I really love all the voice actors.
16:41And I feel like it inspired me to go voice acting and bring more characters to the voice acting experience.
16:52I would also add to that, the fact that we have Koreans represented, the fact that we have multicultural representation on Top 100, from Cat's Eye to Demon Hunter, the Huntrix.
17:10Yeah, Huntrix.
17:11Huntrix? I love that because it reminds me of when Black Eyed Peas, when we were on the charts and we were rocking and there was a kid from the Philippines that came to America to live an American dream, met Will.i.am, a black kid from East L.A., predominantly Mexican community, wanting to live out a dream.
17:28Then I got to connect with him, me, a Native American kid, Mexican kid, that just wanted to live out our dreams and bring joy to the world through our music, through our love for community.
17:38I love it so much. Thank you so much for coming to hang out with me.
17:41You're such a king.
17:42And Jet, can you do me a favor before we get out of here?
17:44Okay, I want you to look at that camera and say, here are the top three of the Billboard Hot 100.
17:49Here are the top three of the Billboard Hot 100.
17:54Yeah!
17:54Yeah!
17:55Alex remains steady at number three.
17:59The ordinary.
18:01I want you laying me down to the dead and peril.
18:04Same with Golden at number two.
18:08Bump, bump, bump with our voices.
18:10You're only dangerous to want me.
18:12Gonna be, gonna be Golden.
18:14So nabbing a fifth week at number one is Taylor Swift with The Face.
18:19Made of Ophelia.
18:20Save my heart from the fader, Ophelia.
18:25And there is our top three.
18:27Now, I got to say, even we talk about these people every week, so it's kind of cool for me to watch the Grammys be announced and see all these people react to, like, their songs being nominated, including Alex Warren, nominated for Best New Artist.
18:41Yeah, it does kind of, like, confirm what we've been seeing on the charts all year that, you know, Alex Warren is up for Best New Artist.
18:49Golden's up for Song of the Year.
18:50Like, all of these songs and artists and albums that are charting every week, that are being streamed every week, that radio's jumping all over every week, they are the kind of definitive hits of the year.
19:01And Ordinary, obviously, is one of those songs because it really, I mean, when was the last time it wasn't even in the top five or something like that?
19:08I also think it's interesting that when we look at this top ten this week, we have three artists in there who are all nominated for Best New Artist.
19:15We have Leon Thomas, Olivia Dean, Alex Warren.
19:17It really feels like it's a changing of the tides in terms of the top ten.
19:22Well, we don't have the familiar faces.
19:24We have these new artists who are also being recognized by the Grammys, but they're also storming the top ten and adding some competition for some of these seasoned artists.
19:33I don't know who got it right, whether it's the Grammys or whether it's us, but I think it's really interesting when I think about how I grew up on music.
19:41Everyone knew the same songs, right?
19:42We just did.
19:44And I think over time we've all gone into our little corners and we've found the artists that we really love.
19:50And I think that's been beautiful for people to explore new genres and to discover new things.
19:54But I also think there's like a little, I don't know, a connectivity that I'm feeling right now and a synergy with it, like what we're all listening to, what the Grammys are receiving.
20:04I know they're just one institution within music, but I think it's just a great reflection of like how something is happening, to your point, like a change energetically with the music where we're all connecting to something.
20:15We all feel something similar.
20:17And I think that's really, really special.
20:18Yeah, it's also why I love that Best New Artist category, because I feel like it's such a diverse mix of artists.
20:24You have people like Cat's Eye in there and Somber and Lola Young, like a really diverse mix of artists and sounds.
20:31And I feel like that's what it should be.
20:33Hell yeah, Team Cat's Eye.
20:34And then Delisa, you were talking about, you know, all this connectivity.
20:37I feel like nothing has connected everybody more than K-pop Demon Hunters and the song Golden.
20:42And to see that song get all these nominations, the soundtrack be nominated against the Kendrick Lamars of the world is crazy to see.
20:51Grammy nominated K-pop Demon Hunters to you.
20:54It's incredible what's happened with this movie and with the soundtrack and with Golden.
20:58I think even when the movie was really blowing up and it was starting to break records on Netflix and, you know, more than just Golden, a bunch of songs from the soundtrack were like shooting up the charts.
21:08I think even back in July, August, I don't know that we expected to be talking about Golden in this way in November.
21:16And it feels like it really has transcended any sort of, like, Netflix fad.
21:21This song is a stone-cold classic and it's, you know, going to be around forever.
21:26Did you guys see, by the way, that they said, I think, I hope I'm not wrong here, that the sequel to K-pop Demon Hunters will be coming out in 2029.
21:34So we got some time to wait.
21:352029?
21:36We have to wait four, Golden's going to be, like, 400 weeks old on the Hot 100 by that time.
21:42It's going to be us, like, why did we both do a cane?
21:47I don't know why we both did that.
21:49Synergy.
21:49Yeah.
21:50Synergy.
21:51The next Teddy swims.
21:52And then, of course, Taylor Swift still at number one.
21:55I forgot what our guesses were about how many weeks she would stay on top, but she's now at five weeks, number one, with the fate of Ophelia.
22:03I mean, the fate of Ophelia, obviously, we've talked about this before, the lead single, the push.
22:08But I think, I don't know, maybe the reason why the fate of Ophelia is the one at the one is because people are trying to figure out between Opalite and the fate of Ophelia.
22:18So it's like, to me, it's like, have you ever been to a sports game and they've done the little raffle where it's like, which train is going to make it?
22:25I mean, that's New York, very New York.
22:26Of course, yeah.
22:27But it's like, who's going to make it?
22:28The B, the D, the M, or whatever.
22:30That's kind of what I feel like I'm witnessing with the fate of Ophelia and Opalite and any of the other songs that are down the chart from Taylor Swift.
22:38I think it's like the fans internally are trying to decide.
22:42And I think right now the fate of Ophelia is winning out, but I don't know if that will always be the case.
22:46I'm interested to see.
22:47It's a good race to watch.
22:48And I agree.
22:49And it does feel like the team Taylor is still pushing fate of Ophelia a little bit.
22:53And you could see that from last week.
22:55They added, they had some strategies to help push the song forward.
22:58They released a remix of the song with Loud Luxury.
23:01So those dance fans have something to listen to as well.
23:05So they're still pushing this song.
23:06And I feel like we're still going to be talking about it over the next few weeks.
23:09Yeah, it's kind of similar to what I was saying about Opalite, the fact that like, yeah, of course, Taylor Swift is going to be huge when she first puts out an album.
23:15But, you know, then some of the songs dissipate, whatever, but Opalite has really stayed longer.
23:20Same with the fate of Ophelia.
23:22Like, you know that Taylor Swift is going to have a number one song when her new album comes out.
23:25She does that every single time.
23:27But most of the time or some of the time, it only lasts one or two weeks.
23:33Now we're up to five weeks.
23:34She's about to be challenging like Blank Space and Antihero to be her longest running number one song.
23:40And that's, you know, amid a career of plenty of number one songs and huge hits.
23:45So this is really kind of becoming like a canon Taylor Swift single.
23:49I think it's going to be fun to watch for the next couple of months.
23:52Well, with all the Grammy news and Golden hype, it'll be interesting to see next week if Taylor and Golden will be at the same spots.
23:59Hopefully I'll see you guys again, too, next week.
24:01Same place, same time.
24:02My girl Megan Trainor is coming through.
24:03Oh, you know the vibes.
24:05We'll be here.
24:06All right.
24:06I'll see you guys then.
