00:00The Penguin's Sofia Falcone is a departure from her comic book and animated film counterpart.
00:06Showrunner Lauren LaFranc gave the character depth and complexity,
00:10turning her into a more than worthy adversary for titular Oz Cobb.
00:14Both are strategic, observant, and know how to appeal to other people's egos.
00:18Sofia sees people for who and what they are,
00:21and often isn't afraid to confront hard truths head-on.
00:24Along with her controlling family,
00:25Oz knows this highly intelligent, chillingly calculated woman is usually right,
00:31prompting them to do whatever they can to minimize her power.
00:35In this show about villains and criminals,
00:38LaFranc views Sofia as the closest thing we have to a hero,
00:41but also knows that she can be just as cruel and ruthless as her enemies and allies.
00:47So let's take a look at Sofia's evolution from Mafia Don's daughter to empowered mob boss,
00:52and how she stayed true to herself despite many attempts to make her into someone else.
00:57From the moment we're introduced to Sofia Falcone in the first episode,
01:01we see how her presence makes people uncomfortable.
01:04This is because she's just returned from Arkham State Hospital
01:07after spending a decade locked in a cell for allegedly murdering seven women.
01:13She's also looking for her younger brother, Alberto,
01:15the new kingpin of Gotham since their father was killed.
01:18However, seemingly no one else is that concerned about his whereabouts.
01:23He went out last night, he refused his bodyguards, and he never came home.
01:26Sofia, that's enough.
01:27But for Oz, her arrival is not only unexpected but incredibly inconvenient,
01:32seeing as how he just killed her brother the night before.
01:35She senses he knows something about Alberto,
01:38and when they go out for a very intense lunch,
01:40we see how other people similarly respond to her presence
01:44with a mixture of uneasiness, fear, and judgment.
01:47While this negative attention clearly upsets her,
01:50Sofia doesn't try to defend herself to anyone.
01:52She knows the kind of vibes she brings.
01:54She has learned to live with the stigma of being mentally ill,
01:57someone people dismiss as unstable.
02:00But she's found that she can use it to her advantage
02:02by letting people underestimate her,
02:05allowing her to make moves unnoticed.
02:07This is a big commonality between her and Oz,
02:10who is also overlooked, and uses that to manipulate, betray,
02:13and scheme his way up the ranks.
02:16You know Oz, people underestimate you but not me.
02:20I've always known you were capable of more.
02:22And it's because she recognizes this common trait in Oz
02:25that Sofia can tell that he's hiding something about Alberto.
02:29When she continues to probe him for information,
02:31he does what he does best, lies.
02:34But instead of hashing it out right then and there,
02:36she lets it go, and plays into the paranoid persona.
02:39No, Oz, you're right.
02:42I'm probably just being crazy.
02:44Sofia and her henchmen find a teenage boy
02:47who vividly remembers seeing Oz near the Iceberg Lounge
02:50the night Alberto disappeared.
02:52She gets Oz in a vulnerable position,
02:54and viciously interrogates him,
02:55knowing how he's nearly always lying.
02:58Sofia doesn't hesitate to shoot the kid
03:00to prove the point that Oz will do and say anything
03:03and everything for self-preservation,
03:05including letting innocent people die.
03:08She visibly doesn't enjoy killing this boy,
03:10but has no qualms with punishing Oz,
03:12who is far from innocent.
03:14She gives him the chance, multiple chances,
03:16to tell the truth, something she'll also do in the finale
03:18under different circumstances.
03:20This version of Sofia is not physically imposing
03:22like in the comics,
03:23but her rage makes her unpredictable.
03:26She dares Oz to gaslight her.
03:28I want you to really think,
03:30am I crazy?
03:34Is it all in my head?
03:36The only reason he survived the encounter
03:37is because his protege, Victor,
03:39provided rather compelling evidence
03:41that Alberto was killed as revenge
03:43by the Moroni crime family.

04:51Episode 4 recontextualizes
04:53the first three episodes,
04:55taking us back 10 years
04:56when Sophia was celebrated
04:57as the beautiful, innocent face
04:59of the Falcone family's
05:00philanthropic efforts.
05:02Carmine makes it clear
05:03that she's his favorite child
05:04because he can count on her
05:05to be obedient,
05:07unlike Alberto,
05:08who seems more interested
05:09in his own life
05:10than helping with the family business.
05:11It's her job as his older sister
05:13to make sure he behaves
05:14and doesn't embarrass the Falcone name.
05:16Carmine tells her that he intends
05:18on breaking tradition
05:19and making her the next in line
05:21to take over,
05:22something even she's unsure of.
05:24But the rest of the family that night...
05:25They know you're mine.
05:25They'll do as I say.
05:26But their father-daughter relationship
05:28isn't a healthy one.
05:30Carmine is cold and emotionless.
05:32He praises Sophia
05:32for essentially falling in line.
05:34He avoids talking about her mother,
05:36Isabella,
05:36who Sophia found hanging
05:37when she was nine.
05:38The family lore
05:40is that she was mentally ill
05:41and took her own life.
05:42Carmine is good at manipulating
05:44his daughter into thinking
05:45that wanting to talk about her
05:47is upsetting for him.
05:48A journalist named Summer Gleason
05:50approaches her about several women
05:52who worked at her father's businesses,
05:54all strangled to death
05:56with defensive wounds,
05:57but staged as hangings,
05:59just like her mother.
06:00Sophia starts to doubt
06:01that her father is a good man.
06:03She doesn't yet do anything
06:05with that information,
06:06but that one meeting
06:07still completely upended Sophia's life
06:10because any opposition to her dad
06:12made her disposable.
06:13And we saw in The Batman
06:15that Carmine's M.O.
06:16is strangling inconvenient women
06:18like Annika, Maria Kelly,
06:20and his daughter, Selina.
06:22Sophia is profoundly betrayed
06:24by not only her father,
06:26but everyone around her.
06:28At Carmine's instruction,
06:29her extended family
06:30backed up his claims
06:31that she's sick,
06:32like her mother,
06:33and exhibits violent behavior.
06:35LeFranc was inspired
06:36by the real tragic story
06:37of Rosemary Kennedy,
06:39who was lobotomized at 23
06:41for being what her father considered
06:43difficult,
06:44and then hidden away and isolated.
06:46Similarly, Carmine has his daughter
06:48sent away for his crimes.
06:49In every depiction,
06:51Arkham has always been
06:52notoriously horrific,
06:53and we see that firsthand
06:55with Sophia
06:56as she's subjected
06:57to coordinated attacks
06:58by other inmates
06:59and unnecessary
07:01and painful electroconvulsive
07:03ECT treatments.
07:05Knowing she'd be free
07:06of this nightmare
07:06after six months
07:07was the only hope she had,
07:09but Carmine saw to it
07:10that she would never be released.
07:12At that moment,
07:13she gives up
07:13and becomes forever changed.
07:16This is a brutal fate
07:17for the daughter
07:17of the Falcone Don,
07:18who could never have anticipated
07:20this level of cruelty
07:21from her own family.
07:23Alberta was the only one
07:25she could count on,
07:26which is why she relentlessly
07:27pursued justice for his murder.
07:29Home is the place
07:30where she should feel safe
07:31and protected and loved.
07:32Instead,
07:33this misogynistic family
07:34is just another type
07:35of prison.
07:36She's blatantly unwelcome,
07:38and everyone has the audacity
07:39to treat her like a pariah,
07:41even though they know
07:42she was innocent.
07:43And as she continues to find out,
07:44protecting your own
07:45is a universal code
07:47that plenty of people abide by.
07:49Oz's somewhat girlfriend,
07:50Eve,
07:51fiercely safeguards her girls,
07:53sex workers
07:53who are constantly at risk,
07:54and was willing to sacrifice
07:56her life
07:57just to keep them safe
07:58from who she thought
07:59was the hangman.
08:00To the Falconis,
08:01Sofia is just a problem.
08:02She's smarter than her uncle Luca,
08:04current head of the family.
08:05Picking up on the fact
08:06that her brother's absence
08:07meant he was likely dead,
08:09and sussing out
08:10that there was a double agent
08:11in their operation.
08:13She was right about it all,
08:14and they can't have that.
08:17In her Mafia Princess era,
08:18one of Sofia's biggest assets
08:20was her ability
08:21to conform and adapt,
08:23presenting herself
08:23as a dutiful daughter.
08:25She does try
08:25to go back into her old life
08:27by wearing the same
08:28somewhat conservative clothes
08:29and pushing down
08:30her anger and resentment.
08:31But after the trauma
08:32of being institutionalized,
08:33she becomes less and less
08:35willing to make herself fit in.
08:37A noticeable trait
08:38she picks up in Arkham
08:39is a feral way of eating.
08:40Ten years of having meals
08:41in a prison cafeteria
08:43erased the need
08:44for utensils or etiquette.
08:45Part of this is also
08:46just to be off-putting
08:47to people who already
08:49look down on her.
08:50Although Sofia was already
08:51disillusioned by the reality
08:52of her awful family
08:53being betrayed by Oz
08:55as, again, the only one
08:56to show her respect
08:57post-Arkham
08:58was a huge wake-up call.
09:00I trusted him
09:01when everything in my body
09:03told me not to.
09:04She realizes there's no point
09:05in trying to fit into
09:06this patriarchal mob world
09:08and play by their rules.
09:10She'll no longer exhaust
09:11or limit herself
09:12trying to please
09:13or gain respect
09:14from her family.
09:15She stops being
09:16a complacent good girl
09:17and embraces her true self
09:19while enacting revenge.
09:21She interrupts a family dinner
09:23she wasn't invited to join
09:25wearing heavier makeup
09:26and bearing her scars
09:28in a bright yellow dress
09:29standing out
09:30among everyone else
09:31and forcing them
09:32to look at her pain
09:33at what she survived.
09:35At the head of the dinner table
09:36she delivers a final monologue
09:37to the relatives
09:38complicit in putting her
09:40in Arkham.
09:41I trusted you.
09:42I loved you.
09:44And yet not one of you
09:46tried to help me.
09:49She's finally accepted
09:51that the only way
09:52for her to heal
09:53is to give herself
09:54a fresh start.
09:55In normal circumstances
09:57annihilating her entire family
09:58might be seen as pretty wrong
10:00but after the way
10:01they treated her
10:01none of them showing
10:02any remorse
10:03or interest in her
10:04being a part of the family
10:06how thoroughly she was betrayed
10:07it's hard not to root for her.
10:09After effectively ending
10:10the Falcones
10:11Sophia celebrates her mother
10:13another woman disposed of
10:14by the Falcones
10:15by wearing her clothes
10:17and taking her last name
10:18embracing her femininity
10:20and becoming more confident.
10:22The heavy makeup
10:22and bulkier silhouette
10:23of the fur coat
10:24take up space
10:25and act as armor.
10:27She publicly rejects
10:28her father's legacy
10:29and vows to build
10:30a matriarchal mob family
10:32one that values
10:33its otherwise overlooked workers.
10:35And when the last remaining
10:36member of the Falcones
10:37Johnny Vizzi
10:38tries to interrupt
10:39and criticize
10:40this new direction
10:41she kills him
10:42in front of everyone
10:43finally shutting him up
10:45and demonstrating
10:45that she isn't just girlbossing.
10:48Sophia Gigante means business
10:50because Oz also betrayed
10:52Salvatore Moroni
10:53by killing his wife and son.
10:55Sophia forms an alliance
10:57something that would anger
10:58her old family.
10:59In Sal
11:00she even briefly
11:01finds a fatherly figure.
11:02Having empathy
11:03in a place like Gotham
11:04in a family like the Falcones
11:05is seen as a weakness
11:07not a strength
11:08but it was empathy
11:08that drove her decision
11:10to hear Summer out
11:11about the deaths of the women.
11:12And she even shows empathy
11:13to Oz
11:14someone who knows
11:15what it's like
11:15to be cast aside
11:16and demeaned.
11:17She feels for his mother Frances
11:19even though she essentially
11:20shaped the monster
11:21who'd go on
11:22to kill her brother.
11:23Sophia was never rewarded
11:25for her compassion
11:26but punished.
11:27Still,
11:27that shred of morality
11:29lives inside of her
11:30and at times
11:31helps her see
11:31that some of her actions
11:33are what her father
11:34would have done.
11:35Sophia thought
11:35killing Gia's parents
11:36would save another young woman
11:38from a similar fate
11:39but this lands Gia
11:40in an orphanage
11:41and Sophia realizes
11:42that she's gaslighting
11:43and abandoning Gia
11:45like her dad did to her.
11:46Whether you see
11:47Sophia Gigante
11:48as a victim
11:49justified in her
11:50questionable actions
11:51an irredeemable villain
11:53like Oz
11:53and everyone else
11:54or the lesser
11:55of two evils
11:56it's undeniable
11:57that she's a fascinating
11:58character
11:59who refused to let herself
12:01be defined by others.
12:02Sophia doesn't get
12:03a happy ending this season.
12:05Oz helps send her
12:06back to Arkham.
12:07You have always been a monster.
12:08But the arrival
12:09of a letter
12:10from her half-sister
12:11Selina Kyle
12:12has us hoping
12:13for a team-up.
12:15That's the take.
