Hiver 1994, dans la petite ville de Louisville dans le Kentucky. Sharon Stevens, une coiffeuse, cherche un sens à sa vie depuis que son fils a rompu tout contact avec elle, lassé de son incapacité à admettre son addiction à l'alcool. Alors que la ville est balayée par une tempête de neige d'une ampleur inédite, Sharon fait la connaissance d'Ed Schmitt, un veuf qui travaille dur pour que ses deux filles ne manquent de rien. Ed a désespérément besoin d'argent pour payer les soins de sa cadette, dont l'état de santé nécessite une greffe de foie. Bouleversée par la situation d'Ed et de ses filles, Sharon se met en tête de les aider. Elle mobilise les habitants de la petite ville...
