Transcript
00:00I listen to you, let me just finish.
00:02Yeah, part of your job is to listen to me.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo.
00:06And today, we're counting down our picks
00:08for The View's most scandalous moments since its 1997 premiere.
00:12This shouldn't even be a problem to begin with.
00:16Number 20, Star Jones quits on air.
00:19Something's been on my heart for a little bit.
00:21In the show's ninth season, original panelist Star Jones
00:24shocked her co-stars by announcing her exit from the series.
00:27And I will not be returning as co-host next year.
00:31Behind the scenes, she had been told her contract
00:33would not be renewed for the next season.
00:35Rather than go along with the network's timeline,
00:37Jones broke the news during a live taping
00:39two days before the official announcement was to be made.
00:42Her co-hosts, particularly Joy Behar,
00:44looked totally shocked and confused by the whole thing.
00:47Executive producer and co-host Barbara Walters
00:50was especially unhappy.
00:52Though Jones was supposed to stay with the show for another month,
00:54during the next episode, Walters told the audience
00:57she felt betrayed by the premature announcement
00:59and the controversial episode would be Jones' last.
01:02And therefore, regrettably, Star will no longer be in this program.
01:07Number 19, Meghan's choice word.
01:10Tired of being what she called
01:11the sacrificial Republican on the panel,
01:13Meghan McCain lost her cool with co-host Joy Behar
01:16on this 2019 episode.
01:18You know what, Joy?
01:19I really come here every day open-minded,
01:21just trying to explain it.
01:23In an argument over former President Donald Trump,
01:25unsurprisingly, the two got into one of their characteristic ideological duels.
01:30But when Behar got a little sarcastic with McCain,
01:33the conservative panelist shot back with the word in question.
01:35Don't feel bad for me, b****.
01:37I hate to do this.
01:38Co-host Sonny Hostin was clearly ruffled by it.
01:41He headed to Florida.
01:43Hold on.
01:44But McCain doubled down,
01:45saying that she and Behar trade that word back and forth all the time.
01:49It shocked a lot of viewers, but Behar seemed completely unbothered.
01:53Number 18, Ann Coulter says liberals don't care about black people.
01:57I need you to tell me what you're trying to say in this book.
02:00No stranger to controversy herself,
02:03inflammatory conservative author and frequent Fox News guest Ann Coulter
02:07made waves with her September 2012 appearance on The View.
02:11Promoting her new book on what she calls race-mongering
02:13among liberal politicians,
02:15she made a bold and provoking statement.
02:17I don't think liberals ever cared about black people.
02:20I mean, five minutes after the Civil Rights Act of 64,
02:22they start calling everything that has nothing to do with black people
02:25a civil rights issue.
02:27The two African-American panelists,
02:29Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd,
02:31took particular umbrage with her generalizations.
02:33After getting stuck in a mire of an argument
02:35about politicians who lived more than a century ago,
02:38co-host Whoopi Goldberg's response eventually had to be bleeped.
02:42Number 17, Wedding Cake Discrimination.
02:45I think you are comparing apples to oranges here.
02:48While discussing the right of a business to refuse service based on religious affiliation,
02:53two former sitcom stars got into a heated argument about a wedding cake
02:56and all that it symbolizes.
02:58I refuse to associate myself with you right now.
03:01Co-host Raven Simone and Candace Cameron Bure's discussion
03:04about a bakery that was fine for refusing to provide a cake
03:07for a same-sex wedding made headlines due to how polarizing it was.
03:11Even once co-host Nicole Wallace stepped in to reframe the argument.
03:16This is a very emotional,
03:17I saw what just erupted between the two of you.
03:19People that, I don't want to impose anything on you.
03:21Without speaking,
03:22they still managed to steal the show in a hilarious cutaway.
03:26Number 16, Kate Gosselin breaks her custody agreement.
03:29Kate, I know you wanted to address in the InTouch cover story that just hit newsstands.
03:35During Elizabeth Hasselbeck's 2009 maternity leave,
03:38reality star Kate Gosselin was one of several rotating guest hosts.
03:42But on this episode, she became a hot topic herself.
03:46In the aftermath of the divorce that rocked the reality program John and Kate Plus 8,
03:50Gosselin came under fire from co-star Whoopi Goldberg for breaching her custody agreement.
03:55I understand that, but when you go into a custody thing with someone,
04:01you have your specific time and their specific time.
04:04Gosselin gave a contradictory and naive story
04:06about the night she interrupted her ex-husband's court-allotted night with their children.
04:11But Whoopi wasn't having it.
04:12She brought the hammer down on Gosselin,
04:14sounding more like Judge Judy than a co-host of The View.
04:17You could have gone to jail.
04:19Number 15, Elizabeth Hasselbeck makes light of stalking.
04:22Really, I've said there's one aspect that I was focused on last night for some reason.
04:26Erin Andrews, who was the ESPN reporter.
04:28Elizabeth Hasselbeck landed herself in hot water during a 2010 taping of The View.
04:33Sportscaster Erin Andrews had been stalked and filmed without her permission months prior.
04:38In response, Hasselbeck joked that the stalker could have waited a few months
04:42to watch her on Dancing with the Stars if he wanted to see more of her body.
04:46I mean, in some way, if I'm him, I'm like, man, I just could have waited 12 weeks.
04:50The insinuation that Andrews' choice to wear revealing costumes on TV
04:54was equivalent to being spied on by a stalker
04:57did not go down well with the co-hosts, the audience, or Andrews herself.
05:01After invoking a firestorm of controversy,
05:03Hasselbeck offered a weepy on-air apology the next day.
05:06I'm really sorry, and I wanted to offer that publicly, too.
05:09Number 14, debating the N-word.
05:12A report that Jesse Jackson had used the N-word in a hot mic moment
05:16touched off yet another intense debate among The View's co-hosts.
05:20He wasn't talking about using the word privately.
05:22He was talking about using it publicly.
05:24Elizabeth Hasselbeck's contention that the word should never be used by members of any race
05:28did not sit well with Sherry Shepard and Whoopi Goldberg.
05:31It's not a word that should be used.
05:33I think it's...
05:34Don't tell me I can't use that word.
05:36Whoopi's patience in the moment is kind of miraculous,
05:39given how she's tried to be as respectful as she can in explaining herself.
05:43But Elizabeth, as I said at the beginning, when we first talked about this word,
05:47this is a word that has meaning when you give it meaning.
05:50Despite her claim that she wanted to understand their point of view,
05:54Hasselbeck seemed determined not to listen,
05:56ending the conversation on the verge of tears once again.
06:00Number 13, Raven Simonet's hiring practices.
06:05The Hot Topic segment on this October 2015 episode
06:08included a study on how people make racist assumptions based on people's names.
06:12Just to bring it back, can we take back racist and say discriminatory?
06:15Because I think that's a better word.
06:17Yes, it is a much better word.
06:17That's a better word.
06:18And I am very discriminatory against words like the ones that they were saying in those names.
06:23For the hosts, this study brought to mind a viral video.
06:26Raven Simonet could barely keep it together.
06:29Through laughter, she announced to everyone watching
06:31that she would not hire someone with a name like, for instance, Watermelon Drea.
06:36I'm not going to hire you.
06:37The silence was deafening, but the controversy that ensued was not.
06:41On a later episode, frequent guest Ann Coulter even threw at her two cents.
06:46You know you messed up when Ann Coulter can roast you and the view audience stays quiet.
06:51Well, I'm at least talking about policy.
06:54You have a position on what people's names should be.
06:57Number 12, Raven Simonet defends racist comments.
07:01In 2015, Venezuelan TV show host Rodner Figueroa was fired from his network
07:06after joking that Michelle Obama looked like a character from Planet of the Apes.
07:10You know, Michelle Obama looks like she's part of the cast of Planet of the Apes, the film.
07:15It was an incredibly racist comment that generated a ton of ire from the public.
07:19But the controversy didn't stop there.
07:21The View's Rosie Perez declared on the show that the Latin community is racist.
07:25There is a secret in the Latin community, specifically the Caribbean, South American,
07:31thank you, Central American, Latin community, that they are very racist.
07:35They never want to be in the same group as black people.
07:40Guest star Raven Simonet pounced on this discussion by then saying,
07:44some people naturally look like animals.
07:46This whole debacle was deeply steeped in racism that made no one look good.
07:50Some people look like animals.
07:52Is that rude?
07:52Girl, half my family does.
07:54Am I right, America?
07:55I look like a bird.
07:56Half my family.
07:57So can I be mad if somebody calls me Toucan Sam?
08:00Like, don't be mad.
08:01Yeah, I'd be mad if somebody called you Toucan Sam.
08:03Number 11, hashtag Nurses Unite.
08:06We apologize for our remarks, and we know how vitally important nurses are.
08:10If you don't want to cause a stir, maybe don't insult an entire occupation.
08:14The story begins at a Miss America competition.
08:17Miss Colorado, Kelly Johnson, a nurse specializing in Alzheimer's disease,
08:21appeared on stage in her uniform and performed a heartbreaking monologue about one of her patients
08:25and the meaning of her job.
08:27I am a lifesaver.
08:28I'm never going to be just a nurse.
08:30While discussing the monologue on The View,
08:32Michelle Collins said that Kelly had basically just read her emails on stage,
08:36while Joy Behar asked why Kelly had a doctor's stethoscope around her neck.
08:41Why does she have a doctor's stethoscope around her?
08:42What is it about?
08:43The outrage was immediate, with nurses creating hashtag Nurses Unite on social media
08:48and speaking about the importance of their jobs.
08:50Sometimes we don't feel like we're the most respected.
08:53You know, one thing, I have to say, one thing that became abundantly clear to me this week
08:57was that nurses wear stethoscopes.
08:59Number 10, Elizabeth Hasselbeck's backstage tirade.
09:02I'm saying this, I wish that it were available.
09:05I'm not saying, I don't believe it's the right thing,
09:06but this is a slippery slope to just eliminating life.
09:09Proceeding the release of Ladies Who Punch remains to Tuta's non-fiction book about The View,
09:14audio leaked of an expletive-laden tirade from former co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck.
09:19After a heated debate about the morning-after pill in 2006,
09:22Hasselbeck was so outraged by Barbara Walters' comments that she stormed off set.
09:26I mean, I heard everything you said. I just am emphatic with...
09:29I barely started.
09:30And it's not just my opinion.
09:31The audio of the backstage meltdown surfaced over a decade later.
09:35She loses her cool after being reprimanded by Walters
09:38and insists she's not returning to the show,
09:40before ultimately returning to the show.
09:42You know what? I can take it in the meeting room.
09:44I'm not taking it out there on air.
09:46Okay, honey.
09:47I'm not taking it.
09:47I hear what you're saying.
09:49Because I have to say...
09:50Hasselbeck's assertion that she doesn't swear is made ironically funny,
09:53given how many times she dropped the F-bomb in a two-minute period.
09:57When the audio leaked,
09:58Hasselbeck released an apology,
10:00explaining that she was pregnant at the time.
10:02Number 9, Whoopi Goldberg's Holocaust Comments.
10:05In a 2022 episode,
10:07the panelists were talking about the banning of books in schools,
10:10particularly books that deal with racism,
10:12the Holocaust,
10:13and supposed adult themes.
10:15Kids are exposed to this stuff really early
10:17in inappropriate situations,
10:19not ones where you're learning or teaching.
10:22Mid-discussion,
10:23Whoopi Goldberg stated that the Holocaust was not about race.
10:26It's not about race.
10:27What is it about?
10:27Because it's about man's inhumanity to man.
10:32Aside from the inaccuracy of the comment,
10:34it seemed to have come out of nowhere.
10:36Though Goldberg tried to clarify her statements,
10:38she issued a live apology the next day.
10:40I regret my comments as I said and I stand corrected.
10:44The moment made national headlines,
10:46and Goldberg received a tide of criticism from all corners.
10:49She was personally suspended by ABC News president Kim Godwin,
10:53and was relieved of her hosting duties for two weeks.
10:56Number 8, Whoopi Goldberg defends Mel Gibson.
10:59In 2010, Gibson was caught in a vicious feud with his partner,
11:03Oksana Grigorueva.
11:05In one particularly hateful voicemail,
11:08Gibson spouted something so horrific,
11:10we can't repeat it here.
11:11He also allegedly referred to one of his employees
11:13as a slur against Mexican people.
11:16While the outrage was immediate,
11:17Whoopi Goldberg defended Gibson on The View,
11:20saying that she personally knows him
11:21and that he is not a racist.
11:22You can say he's being a bonehead,
11:27but I can't sit and say that he's a racist,
11:31having spent time with him in my house with my kids.
11:33This in turn led to more outrage,
11:35as people decried Whoopi for defending Gibson
11:38after he said such awful and clearly racist things.
11:41Joy Behar put it best when she said,
11:43that language certainly sounds racist to me.
11:46But I know Mel, and I know he's not a racist.
11:48Oh really?
11:49Yeah, I do.
11:49He may be a bonehead.
11:53Well, that language certainly sounds racist to me.
11:55Number 7.
11:57Raven Simonet defends an abusive cop's actions.
12:00Raven Simonet is at it again,
12:02this time defending an abusive cop.
12:04In 2015, a video surfaced of a police officer
12:07violently taking down a student
12:09after she refused to get off her phone in class.
12:12Many people called the reaction unnecessary and excessive,
12:15and the officer was promptly fired.
12:1620 minutes ago,
12:17school resource officer Ben Fields
12:20was terminated from the Richland County Sheriff's Department.
12:23Raven Simonet chimed in during the after show,
12:25titled After the View,
12:27and said that the student should have just followed the rules
12:29and put her phone away.
12:30And while she did condemn the officer's actions,
12:33many saw it as an example of victim blaming.
12:35The girl was told multiple times
12:37People were outraged,
12:40and a Change.org petition was created
12:42calling for Raven Simonet to be fired.
12:45It received 130,000 signatures in five days.
12:49Number 6.
12:50Whoopi Goldberg spat with Janine Pirro
12:52Republican TV personality Janine Pirro,
12:55host of Fox News,
12:57Justice with Janine,
12:58appeared on The View for just a few minutes
13:00before her segment was cut
13:01when she upset Whoopi Goldberg.
13:03During her appearance,
13:05Pirro covered a host of topics,
13:07defending the Russia-United States-Helsinki summit,
13:09blaming Obama for everything,
13:11and telling Whoopi that she had a nonsense illness
13:13called Trump Derangement Syndrome.
13:15Did you just point at me?
13:16Yes!
13:17Listen, I don't have Trump Derangement.
13:19Let me tell you what I have.
13:20Okay.
13:21I have a lot of...
13:22After Pirro began saying horrible things about immigration,
13:25Whoopi swiftly said goodbye, literally,
13:27and the other hosts brought the interview to a close.
13:29You don't always have to respect everyone's opinions.
13:32United States whips up people
13:34to beat the hell out of people.
13:35No!
13:36Say goodbye!
13:36Let me buy!
13:37I'm done!
13:38Number 5.
13:40Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar
13:41walk out on Bill O'Reilly.
13:43The mosque down here on 9-11.
13:45That's inappropriate.
13:46This was another instance
13:48where Whoopi Goldberg's difference of opinion
13:50with a Fox News star caused a stir.
13:52While visiting The View in October 2010,
13:54Bill O'Reilly made a few enemies
13:56with his controversial political comments.
13:58There's the president going,
13:59well, they were right to do it.
14:00And then the guy says...
14:01Yes, this is America.
14:02And then the guy...
14:02This is America.
14:03Hold it, hold it.
14:04Listen to me, because you'll learn.
14:06All right?
14:11The topic was Park 51,
14:13a proposed Islamic community center
14:14that was to be built
14:16just down the street from ground zero.
14:18Bill told the cast
14:19that 70% of Americans
14:20don't want the mosque
14:22without citing a source.
14:23However, it's actually from
14:24a CNN Opinion Research Corporation poll.
14:2770% of Americans
14:28don't want that mosque down there.
14:30So don't give me the weebid.
14:31We're temple.
14:33I want to see that.
14:33You want to bet on that?
14:35Bill went on
14:35with derogatory comments
14:37prompting Whoopi to curse at Bill
14:38before walking off stage
14:39with joy in disgust.
14:41They eventually returned
14:42and Bill clarified his comment,
14:44but the damage
14:44had already been done.
14:46I don't want to sit here.
14:48I don't want to sit here.
14:49Go.
14:49Go.
14:49I don't want to sit here.
14:51That's it.
14:52You're outraged about your mosque.
14:53Number 4.
14:54Rosie vs. Elizabeth
14:56Did Iraq attack us, Elizabeth?
14:58Iraq?
14:58Did not attack us, Rosie.
15:00We've been there before.
15:01I'm saying our enemy's Al-Qaeda.
15:03Are you hearing that?
15:04This one is a nice mix
15:05of controversy
15:06and painful awkwardness.
15:08The episode that aired
15:09on May 23rd, 2007
15:11is probably one of the most famous episodes
15:13in The View's history,
15:15prompted by the long-standing rivalry
15:16between Rosie O'Donnell
15:18and Elizabeth Hasselbeck.
15:19Do you believe I think
15:20our troops are terrorists, Elizabeth?
15:22Yes or no?
15:23I don't think they...
15:24Do you believe they?
15:24Yes or no?
15:25Excuse me.
15:26Let me speak.
15:27The topic was the Iraq War
15:28and liberal Rosie
15:29and conservative Elizabeth
15:31were quickly at each other's throats.
15:33It swiftly erupted
15:34into a massive fight
15:35that resulted in Joy and Sherry
15:37pretending to walk off stage
15:38and asking for a commercial break
15:40to diffuse the tension.
15:42Executive producer Bill Getty
15:43later admitted
15:44it was a horrible day
15:45to be in The View's studio.
15:47We can only imagine.
15:48I'll tell you what's cowardly.
15:50Me.
15:51What?
15:51No.
15:52Look at me on PBS.
15:53No.
15:54Asking a rhetorical question
15:56that you never answer yourself.
15:58That is cowardly.
15:59Who is directing the show?
16:00Let's go to commercial.
16:02Let's go to commercial.
16:03I'm going to drink water.
16:04Let's go to commercial.
16:05Number three.
16:06Barbara Walters
16:07defends Woody Allen.
16:09While Woody Allen's art
16:10has been acclaimed,
16:11his personal life
16:12has long been the subject
16:13of scrutiny.
16:14Director Woody Allen
16:15caught in a relationship
16:16with the 21-year-old
16:17adopted daughter
16:18of his longtime partner,
16:20Mia Farrow.
16:20His relationship
16:21with Soon-Yi Previn
16:23is well documented
16:24and in 2014,
16:25his adopted daughter,
16:27Dylan Farrow,
16:27wrote an open letter
16:28accusing her father
16:30of sexually assaulting her
16:31when she was seven years old.
16:32He's lying and...
16:35He's been lying for so long.
16:38And it is difficult for me
16:40to see him
16:41and to hear his voice.
16:44I'm sorry.
16:45Barbara Walters
16:46came to Allen's defense
16:47on The View,
16:48calling him a loving
16:49and caring parent
16:51despite the sexual assault allegations.
16:53Walters and co-host
16:54Sherry Shepard
16:55proceed to argue
16:56about Allen and his past
16:58and the media
16:59quickly made scathing headlines
17:00of Barbara's defense.
17:01I have really seen
17:03the father as sensitive
17:04and as loving
17:05and as caring
17:06as Woody is
17:08and Soon-Yi
17:09to these two girls.
17:10I don't know about Dylan.
17:12I can only tell you
17:13what I have seen now
17:14that it's a good marriage
17:16and that he is
17:16a loving, caring father.
17:19Number two,
17:20Kelly Osbourne's
17:21cleaning toilets comment.
17:23In August 2015,
17:24cast members on The View
17:25were discussing
17:26Donald Trump's racism
17:27and his controversial
17:28views on immigration.
17:29There are a lot of Latinos
17:31here in this country
17:32that do agree
17:33that the immigration problem
17:35is a problem
17:36and it does need
17:37to be addressed
17:38and it does need
17:39to be fixed.
17:40Interesting.
17:40But making
17:41those comments,
17:43those racist comments
17:44do not help.
17:45Trying to attack Trump
17:46and his political beliefs,
17:47Kelly Osbourne said,
17:48If you kick
17:49every Latino
17:50out of this country,
17:52then who is going
17:52to be cleaning
17:53your toilet,
17:53Donald Trump?
17:54It was a ridiculously
17:55offensive thing to say
17:56and was quickly met
17:57with shocked gasps
17:58and rebuttals
17:59by her co-hosts.
18:00There's more jobs
18:01to be in.
18:01In L.A.,
18:02they always...
18:03But Latinos
18:04are not only the only people
18:06doing that.
18:06No, I didn't mean it like that.
18:06Come on.
18:07No, I would never
18:08mean it like that.
18:09While Kelly said
18:10that she didn't mean
18:11it like that,
18:12people were deeply offended
18:13and Kelly was forced
18:14to issue an apology,
18:15singling out
18:15her poor choice of words.
18:17Yeah,
18:17you can say that again.
18:19I'm okay
18:19with people calling me
18:20whatever they want
18:21to call me.
18:22However,
18:23I'm not okay
18:24that I hurt
18:25people's feelings
18:25and it was
18:27my poor choice of words
18:28and it doesn't reflect
18:29my opinion at all
18:30and I do not want
18:31to be brought into
18:32this political nightmare.

18:51Number one,
18:52Whoopi Goldberg
18:53defends Bill Cosby.
18:54Here we have
18:55another instance
18:56of a host
18:57defending a controversial celebrity.
18:58He has not been arrested
18:59and the bottom line is
19:02that's the law.
19:03Innocent until proven guilty.
19:05In the mid-2010s,
19:06Cosby's reputation
19:07was permanently tarnished
19:09after he became the subject
19:10of numerous
19:11sexual assault allegations.
19:12Whoopi Goldberg
19:13was quick to defend Cosby
19:14on numerous occasions,
19:16vehemently declaring
19:17that he was innocent
19:18until proven guilty.
19:19And the American courts
19:20agree with me
19:21because still,
19:23he has not been taken to jail
19:24or tried
19:25or on anything.
19:27So back off me.
19:28She then became the subject
19:29of numerous personal threats
19:31and late-night TV ridicule.
19:33To her credit,
19:34she later switched her stance
19:35and said that the evidence
19:36pointed towards his guilt.
19:38If this is to be tried
19:40in the court of public opinion,
19:42I gotta say,
19:42all of the information
19:44that's out there
19:45kinda points to guilt.
19:48Which of these moments
19:49made you want to
19:49dramatically walk off stage?
