00:05:23Excuse me, just one second.

00:13:50You're not answering your phone.
00:13:52It's flat.
00:13:53Your landline.
00:13:55Well, there's a fault on the landline, I think.
00:14:00What is it you wanted?
00:14:01Well, I did want you to pick the girls up from school, but I can get them now.
00:14:05Right.
00:14:06Not tomorrow, though.
00:14:08I can't.
00:14:10Well, you can't pick them up in the afternoon.
00:14:12No.
00:14:13Well, then take them in the morning.
00:14:15Can't do that, either.
00:14:17You've got to start pulling your weight, Dave, otherwise I'm going to lose my job.
00:14:21I can't.
00:14:22Sorry.
00:14:23Oh, for God's sake.
00:14:24She's going to start work soon.
00:14:29Cheryl?
00:14:29Yeah.
00:14:30You know, when she does then, I'll be able to.
00:14:33I'll pout a lot more.
00:14:35Not regular, too.
00:14:36What?
00:14:43What?
00:14:58George!
00:14:59Mum, Dad's dead.
00:15:00So, after this stroke, she was living independently?
00:15:02Yes.
00:15:03He died years ago.
00:15:03Yeah, dementia was manageable.
00:15:06She doesn't have dementia.
00:15:08How much do these things cost?
00:15:10I mean, it wasn't diagnosed.
00:15:11No.
00:15:12I mean, there was absolutely nothing wrong with her.
00:15:14She's been minding my kids, and I wouldn't let a demented woman do that.
00:15:17George!
00:15:19George!
00:15:19It's not Dad, Mum.
00:15:21Oh, sorry.
00:15:22Sorry, my mum's a bit confused, isn't it?
00:15:23Don't worry about it.
00:15:25Why a bottle full of ice?
00:15:27Mum, mum, mum, mum.
00:15:27Sit down.
00:15:30George!
00:15:30Sit down, Mum.
00:15:31Come on.
00:15:32Oh, no.
00:15:32What type of house is it?
00:15:35A terraced.
00:15:37Does she own it?
00:15:38No.
00:15:39Is that a problem?
00:15:40No.
00:15:41Steps might be.
00:15:42Are there any?
00:15:43Two.
00:15:44Three.
00:15:45Yeah, you bought me that.
00:15:45So, we could be looking at a ramp.
00:15:48You think it ascends on her own?
00:15:50Well, she's been here three weeks already.
00:15:53It's difficult to see what else we can do for her.
00:15:54Can I just stop you there?
00:15:56Nice.
00:15:58My mum has had a stroke.
00:15:59Yes.
00:16:00And she's making no sense.
00:16:02She's convinced anything that moves is a dead horse.
00:16:04Mum.
00:16:04And right now, she's trying to eat metal.
00:16:06Mum, no, no, no.
00:16:07So, there's obviously brain damage, yes?
00:16:09Yes.
00:16:10So, shouldn't we be trying to fix that?
00:16:12Yes, but this is an assessment ward, Claire.
00:16:14We're not staffed for rehabilitation.
00:16:15Then can we go somewhere there is?
00:16:17There are no places available.
00:16:18And even if there were, they're designed to get people back on their feet.
00:16:22And Mary's already walking.
00:16:23She has no idea where she's walking to.
00:16:25I know.
00:16:26Look, I think we'll talk again after the kitchen test.
00:16:30What's the kitchen test?
00:16:32Occupational therapy needs to know that Mary can find her way around the kitchen and make herself a cup of tea.
00:16:37Are you serious?
00:16:39Yes.
00:16:41You can sit in if you like.
00:16:43That's love, too.
00:16:47What am I doing, Mary?
00:16:54Hmm?
00:16:56I'm filling the kettle, aren't I?
00:17:00Would you like to do it?
00:17:05If you show me you can do it, you can go home.
00:17:12Would you like that?
00:17:17Never mind, eh?
00:17:26So, what do we do next?
00:17:33Come on, ma'am.
00:17:35What do you do next?
00:17:36We do ask families not to prompt.
00:17:38Sorry.
00:17:39Or intervene in any way during these tests.
00:17:41You see, our aim is to prove to Mary that she can carry out these tests without any help whatsoever.
00:17:47Right.
00:17:49Right.
00:17:50Now, there's water in the kettle.
00:17:52Mary.
00:17:54And we plug it in here.
00:17:56And we turn it on.
00:17:58Just here.
00:17:59Now, can you do that for me, Mary?
00:18:12Shall I show you?
00:18:23Okay.
00:18:25Now, your turn.
00:18:26Now, your turn.
00:18:29Well, never mind, eh?
00:18:39I'll tell you what.
00:18:42How about I make one first, and then you can have a go.
00:18:48So, what do we need?
00:18:52Well, we need a teabag and a cup.
00:18:58Look over here, Mary.
00:19:01Here's a lovely one.
00:19:03Roses.
00:19:05Now, I bet you love growing roses, don't you?
00:19:10Now, here's a cup.
00:19:12And here's the teabag.
00:19:13Now, can you help me, Mary?
00:19:17Can you put the teabag into the cup?
00:19:21Now, what do you want?
00:19:22And here's the teabag.
00:19:22Well, the teabag is half a cup, won't you?
00:19:23No, I bet you we're carrying to the reduzum.

00:20:13We're going to another hospital, ma'am, where you can get better.
00:20:17Home.
00:20:19It's in. It's in.
00:20:34You must be Mary.
00:20:40I'm Josh, Mary.
00:20:43Jenny, hi.
00:20:44We'll soon have a dance in again.
00:20:46Thanks.
00:20:47Won't we, Mary? Eh?
00:20:49Just say what it is, ma'am.
00:21:07Tell me what it is!
00:21:08It's all up. It's all up. It's all up. It's all up, Mum.
00:21:27There is one thing.
00:21:29Yeah?
00:21:30They've stopped saving for their holiday.
00:21:33Yeah, they won't be able to go.
00:21:35That's a shame.
00:21:36Yeah.
00:21:37May I, er, may I ask why?
00:21:40Erm...
00:21:41Well, I've lost my job.
00:21:43And tax credit.
00:21:46We'll, er, refund what you have paid.
00:21:49I thought that was impossible.
00:21:50It is in this case.
00:21:55Oi!
00:21:59No!
00:22:02Stop laughing. I heard it burn.
00:22:05Give it back!
00:22:06Give it back!
00:22:07But I heard it first!
00:22:09No!
00:22:10Stop!
00:22:11You don't have all enough to do with your kids.
00:22:18What's happened?
00:22:20Sorry.
00:22:21I've tried but she's taken against me.
00:22:23Sausage!
00:22:24Sausage!
00:22:25You're not my friend today, are you, Mary?
00:22:26Sausage!
00:22:29Do you want to wait outside?
00:22:31It's alright, it's okay.
00:22:33Just wait down.
00:22:34Yeah.
00:22:39On the cake again?
00:22:40Yeah.
00:22:41Yeah.
00:22:44She's been having more stomach problems and I'm wondering should I go and ask the doctor to see her again?
00:22:48You be alright?
00:22:49Yeah.
00:22:50Yeah.
00:22:55Hey, Mum.
00:22:58Why don't you have a little seat, eh?
00:23:00Hm?
00:23:01Have a little sit down, eh?
00:23:04Go.
00:23:05Have you got a pain, ma'am?
00:23:17Yeah?
00:23:19Where?
00:23:21Where is it, ma'am?
00:23:22Here we go. Let's have this, look.
00:23:38When the medicine kicks in, I'll bring the girls in. That'd be nice, won't it?
00:23:53Come in.
00:23:55It's okay. Grandma's grandma again now.
00:23:59Promise?
00:24:03Hey.
00:24:05Look, girls, come on.
00:24:08Have grandma a hug?
00:24:13So give me your letters.
00:24:15Okay.
00:24:17Letters for grandma.
00:24:22Okay.
00:24:25Sorry.
00:24:28I folded my garden gate.
00:24:34I folded my garden gate.
00:24:38Okay.
00:24:40Good girls.
00:24:42I folded my garden gate.
00:24:45Mm.
00:24:52I'm Amanda Jennings, and this is Diane, Mary's social worker, who will also be helping you with the discharge. Now, do you have power of attorney?
00:25:04No.
00:25:06Um, mum's not fit to give it to us, so we're going for court of protection.
00:25:09Right.
00:25:11Diane, if you could go and get the team and bring Mrs Taylor in, please.
00:25:14You bring her mum in?
00:25:16Yes.
00:25:18Where did she get all set?
00:25:19It's the patient's right to attend and play an active part in the discharge procedure.
00:25:33and play an active part in the discharge procedure.
00:25:36Diane and I will answer any questions that you may have at the end of the meeting.
00:26:04So, Dr Ray Sullivan, if you can bring us up to date and then we can let you go.
00:26:09Mary Taylor had an acute stroke which has affected her vision, right upper limb and cognitive ability.
00:26:16She was referred here for rehabilitation and an EMI assessment.
00:26:21Since arriving, she's developed additional medical problems, nausea and wanting and acute constipation.
00:26:28She has been referred to as ultimate gastroenterologist and has been given antibiotics
00:26:33and steroids while she waits to see him. Once seen, she'll be followed up after discharge as an outpatient.
00:26:40There's nowhere. Thank you, Doctor.
00:26:42Can I ask why she's on a drip?
00:26:44Because she's dehydrated her into a difficulty swallowing.
00:26:46Anyway, Doctor's very busy today, I'm afraid.
00:26:49Can we move on to you, Hilary, and physiotherapy?
00:26:53Yeah, thank you, Doctor.
00:26:56When Mary arrived, we focused on treatment to make the muscles aware.
00:27:00However, since the health problems, we've been unable to carry on.
00:27:04This morning, we tested Mary when given objects she couldn't watch them.
00:27:09A sock with a sock, a picture card with a word card.
00:27:12Occupational therapy are looking into.
00:27:14I don't understand what you're saying, ma'am.
00:27:17What are you saying, ma'am?
00:27:19We still see involving Mary as an active role, but so far there's been no progress.
00:27:23It's my role.
00:27:24We think this is more cognitive than physical, and there's not much more we can do on that front.
00:27:28I've also got a note here from speech therapy saying the tattoo continues you to lack a cooperation.
00:27:34Look, I just...
00:27:35I know how hard this is for everyone, but we are nearly there, Nurse Brown.
00:27:42Mary is often very confused.
00:27:45She is uncooperative, at times aggressive.
00:27:50She only sleeps for short periods and is often found wandering, disturbing other patients.
00:27:57Due to falls, her mattress is now on the floor.
00:28:00She has sucked three ursies and a creamer.
00:28:05We are trying to...
00:28:08I've got enough of this.
00:28:09I only understand that this is upsetting for everyone.
00:28:13But I promise you, if we carry on, it'll all be over in a matter of minutes.
00:28:19Soon enough.
00:28:20Come on, we're going home, ma'am.
00:28:22We're going home.
00:28:31Home.
00:28:34You sure?
00:28:36If you already know if you're black, you'll find a lot, right?
00:28:40You know what?
00:28:41They never could be black.
00:28:46You might be biling awhile.
00:28:49In Europe.
00:28:51Oh, yeah.
00:28:53You don't know.
00:28:54I don't know.

00:29:10anything jenny you've removed your mother from the hospital and that suits us all we can all
00:29:15wash your hands of her but there's things you should know okay you've got a child brief your
00:29:20kitchen otherwise she's guaranteed to scold herself and very very likely to burn the house
00:29:25down you need a secure gate at the top of the stairs are you going to find her in a heap at the
00:29:30bottom you need handrails on the bath and toilet but she's going to crack her head open on the tiles
00:29:35and a dozen other things i could mention but that'll do for now
00:29:38i haven't got any money we'll pay it's cheaper than keeping her in hospital
00:29:47but you can't look after a demented mother and two kids while there's building work going on around
00:29:52don't you so what do i do put her into care now just while the builders are in that's all no look
00:30:01i know you think i've got a cheek but she's my mother too

00:31:13And I'm the one who's going to be showing you around today, okay?
00:31:24This is the lounge.
00:31:26You'll probably spend most of your time here, Mary.
00:31:28Most people do.
00:31:29There's a concert once a week, if you're well enough.
00:31:32Visitors are welcome.
00:31:33Give me five minutes, love.
00:31:35It won't be long.
00:31:38And last but not least, your bedroom.
00:31:42Keep that room.
00:31:48I'll leave you to it.
00:31:57I'll leave you to it.
00:31:58It's just for a bit, Mum.
00:31:59It's just...
00:32:00while I get the house ready for you.
00:32:01It's just for a bit, Mum.
00:32:02It's just...

00:35:26Missing?
00:35:27Yeah.
00:35:28What do you mean? Is she somewhere in the building?
00:35:30Not exactly. She's nowhere in the building.
00:35:33Oh, God. I'm coming.
00:35:35No, no, it would be better if you...
00:35:36No, I'm coming.
00:35:44Dave.
00:35:45Dave, it's me. Look, my mum's gone missing in that bloody nursing home.
00:35:48I don't know, but I just need you to come over here, okay?
00:35:57Why?
00:35:58Because I'm going to go over there, that's why.
00:36:04Shit, I'm joking.
00:36:05Jenny, isn't it?
00:36:26Yeah.
00:36:26The best thing you can do, Jenny, is wait at home by the phone.
00:36:29My husband's doing that. I want to see her room, please.
00:36:31We've searched her room. She's not there.
00:36:32I want to know what she's wearing.
00:36:33I want to know what she's wearing.
00:37:03My mother is walking around the city in a dressing gown and nighting.
00:37:21Mum?
00:37:25Mum?
00:37:26Mum?

00:38:05Can you phone me when you get this?
00:38:27I'll find her.
00:38:46Police are still looking.
00:38:51The place is a dump.
00:38:52No, no, that place, Belle Vista.

00:40:14That's a boy.
00:40:24I thought she was getting a job.
00:40:37As soon as you got a job, you were going to be able to cough up some money to pay for
00:40:44the kids that you left me with, yeah?
00:40:45Yeah.
00:40:46Well, that's not going to happen now, is it, if she's pregnant?

00:41:04No.
00:41:04The police asked her.
00:41:06Why, I'm coming up.
00:41:06Don't come up.
00:41:07I should be there.
00:41:09I'll phone you if you don't hear anything.
00:41:12I've given her this phone number to just get off, okay?
00:41:14Okay, so she's trying to phone me.

00:41:29but you need to find some money from somewhere.
00:41:31I don't see why my kid should suffer
00:41:33just because she's gone and got us.
00:41:35I will, I will.
00:41:35When?
00:41:36Sooner.
00:41:39Oh, no, no, no, police.

00:41:55Two letters and two grandkids.
00:42:04Goodnight, Mommy.
00:42:05Goodnight, goodnight.
00:42:09It was recharging on the worktop.
00:42:22I haven't moved it, and Sophie hasn't,
00:42:24because she's been searching high and low for it,
00:42:26so that leaves you.

00:42:37You're a ten-year-old girl, for God's sake.

00:42:43Hurry up.
00:42:44Come on.
00:42:45Oh, I'm sorry.

00:45:08How do you take it?
00:45:10White.
00:45:11No sugar.
00:45:12You said you wouldn't be long, so I waited.
00:45:14Chocolate, Mum?
00:45:15Chocolate, Mum.

00:45:23But I did.
00:45:24Now I'm making tea even if I don't want one, just in case he does.
00:45:28Bit of a pushover like that, I guess.
00:45:29How did she get out?
00:45:30I don't know.
00:45:31There was a woman standing in a pool of her own urine.
00:45:32Yes.
00:45:33Well, how long had you been like that?
00:45:34Well, how long had you been like that?
00:45:35I don't know.

00:46:3030 residents some with severe dementia and just three staff I've known just one of those residents
00:46:41need the three of us to sort her out which meant 29 people wandering around unsupervised
00:46:46nevertheless just the three of us
00:46:49can't blame the boss either the owner our place makes him 20 grand a year
00:46:59put an extra member of staff on and that 20 grand's gone and the place closes down
00:47:04everyone knows this local authority the NHS CQC they know the standard of care in places like ours
00:47:14isn't good enough better substandard care than no care at all so everybody keeps dumb
00:47:21meanwhile people like us me Rachel Ros three were on last night totally dedicated
00:47:30as caring and compassionate as anyone could be
00:47:34we battle on
00:47:40see like a beautiful
00:48:10bracelet isn't it I've not got a chair
00:48:13look if you get lost again they'll see the address on here and they'll bring you back home
00:48:18I've not got a chair
00:48:20I worry about you but if you have this on I'll worry a little bit less
00:48:24I've not got a chair
00:48:25I don't know what you're saying

00:55:30They've got school tomorrow.
00:55:31What?
00:55:32They're sleeping over?
00:55:33Yeah.
00:55:34They're sleeping over?
00:55:35Yeah.
00:55:36You didn't say that?
00:55:37Yeah, I did.
00:55:38No, you didn't.
00:55:39You said you were going for a drink with a mate.
00:55:40Well, I am.
00:55:41And I'll be late.
00:55:42I'm not going to be dragging them home at all hours of the night when they've got school
00:55:43in the morning.
00:55:44They were good.
00:55:46They were good.
00:55:48There's a male friend I'll take you.
00:55:49Yeah, Dave, it is.
00:55:50And you know what?
00:55:51He's going to fuck my brains out all night.
00:55:52No, he's going to fuck my brains out all night.
00:55:54No, he's like, he's a dick.
00:55:55I can't love you.
00:55:56They're sleeping over.
00:55:57Yeah.
00:55:58You didn't say that?
00:55:59Yeah, I did.
00:56:01No, you didn't.
00:56:02You said you were going for a drink with a mate.
00:56:03Well, I am.
00:56:04And I'll be late.
00:56:05I'm not going to be dragging them home at all hours of the night when they're
00:56:06got school in the morning.
00:56:07You're all good.
00:56:10It's a male friend I'll take you.
00:56:11Yeah, Dave, it is.
00:56:13And you know what?
00:56:14He's going to fuck my brains out all night.
00:56:22Here we are.
00:56:23One wine and soda.
00:56:28Slend you.
00:56:37So, have you got any brothers and sisters?
00:56:39No.
00:56:40Six.
00:56:42Six?
00:56:43It was the quick and the thin in our house, I'm telling you.
00:56:46My mum, right, used to do a Sunday tea.
00:56:49You know what?
00:56:51All the butties and sausage rolls and cakes and all that stuff.
00:56:55And my brother, Tam, he'd go like this.
00:56:58He'd pick up a load of stuff in his right hand
00:57:00and then he'd stash it under the table in his left hand.
00:57:02Then he'd keep eating with the right hand
00:57:04and then when everything was gone and the table was empty,
00:57:06he'd just resort to what was in his left hand.
00:57:09That greedy bastard.
00:57:11Twice the size of me.
00:57:12Still is.
00:57:22Who are you?
00:57:25It was just me and her, Claire.
00:57:27And she's got no kids.
00:57:28Is that out of choice?
00:57:29Um...
00:57:30I don't know.
00:57:31I don't know.
00:57:32We don't really go there.
00:57:45But I knew there was something wrong.
00:57:51I didn't know he was carrying on.
00:57:54But I knew something wasn't right.
00:57:57So I said, why don't we try for a boy?
00:58:00Thinking that would sort it.
00:58:02But that's what he'd always wanted, you see, deep down.
00:58:06Um...
00:58:07Anyway, he just said, no, I'm happy with just the girls
00:58:10and nothing was wrong.
00:58:11But now she's pregnant.
00:58:13This other woman is pregnant.
00:58:16And, of course, he's a boy.
00:58:20So, yeah, that...
00:58:22Now he has a bit.
00:58:32Right.
00:58:33Anyway.
00:58:34Hi, mate.
00:58:35Good evening.
00:58:36Oh.
00:58:37Madison Street first, please, mate.
00:58:38Off Chambers, yeah?
00:58:39And then I'm going on to Wadsworth Street, thanks.
00:58:40Yep.
00:58:41Well, in your own time, mate.
00:58:42Do you want to come back for coffee?
00:58:43I want to be your mum.
00:58:44I should be asleep.
00:58:45What will you be your sister?
00:58:46She'll give you the once over and then leave.
00:58:48Eyes wide if she approves
00:58:49and mouth like this if she doesn't.
00:58:50I, so, all of I wish.
00:58:52I'm not going to be at 놓ine.
00:58:53I'd come back for a governor and then dig into the office.
00:58:55I'd expect you to see her wife.
00:58:56I'm going to go home.
00:58:57We're all going to see her wife.
00:58:59Oh, I'm going to listen to her wife.
00:59:00I'm going home.
00:59:01I'm going home to Wadsworth Street.
00:59:02Thanks.
00:59:03Yep.
00:59:06Well, in your own time, mate.
00:59:08Do you want to come back for coffee?
00:59:10Won't be your mum.
00:59:11I should be asleep.
00:59:12She'll be asleep.
00:59:13I'll tell you what mate, we'll both get off at Madison.
00:59:43There's a bit on the right.
00:59:50Oh my God, what's happened?
00:59:52Oh God.
01:00:01Are you Jenny Northwoods?
01:00:03Yeah.
01:00:04And this lady?
01:00:05It's my man. What's happened?
01:00:13Hiya.
01:00:17How's things?
01:00:18Fine.
01:00:19Yeah, how's Mum?
01:00:20Fine, yeah, everything's fine. You just go and enjoy yourself.
01:00:23I'm at home, Claire. With Mum.
01:00:30I'm sorry Jenny, I'm really sorry.
01:00:33They wouldn't even know what to do with her, only she was wearing the bracelet that I got her.
01:00:37I said how lucky was that?
01:00:39Fuck.
01:00:43Sorry.
01:00:46It's OK.
01:00:47I had to go to Jenny's last night and I didn't get back till late. I'm really sorry.
01:01:04OK, it's fine.
01:01:05Look, Claire, look, I've been meaning to ask you this anyway.
01:01:08Yeah.
01:01:09Do you need some time off? Be with your Mum a bit more?
01:01:12What?
01:01:13I mean, I can sort that fee if you want.
01:01:15No, I'm fine.
01:01:16Thanks.
01:01:17Are you sure?
01:01:19Positive.
01:01:20Yeah.
01:01:21Again, it's not like you.
01:01:29I don't know what you wish.

01:03:05Hey, how was she?
01:03:08No news yet.
01:03:14I wonder who's it was.
01:03:15What?
01:03:17A broomstick outside.
01:03:20Oh, have you eaten?
01:03:22No, and no cheesy chips again, please.
01:03:26What about fish sauce?
01:03:28Yeah!
01:03:29You can afford that, can you?
01:03:33Just about, yeah.
01:03:35Right, come on, girls.
01:03:37Let's leave Arnie Claire to her cackling.
01:03:39This way.
01:03:40Bye, girls.
01:03:41Bye, Mummy.
01:03:42Bye, Mummy.
01:03:42Bye, Mummy.
01:03:42Now, you've already got care package.
01:04:12Set up for Mary and they'll keep that open for as long as they possibly can.
01:04:16Sadly, the longer that she stays here, the more her care package is threatened.
01:04:19So it's in all of our best interests to get Mary home again as soon as possible.
01:04:23Now, the scan does show...
01:04:24Sorry, you're hurtling her head here.
01:04:28Aren't I?
01:04:29Yes.
01:04:30We've not seen our mother yet.
01:04:32Nor any doctor who treated her, nor any nurse who cared for her, but you're already throwing
01:04:37her out.
01:04:37I'm throwing nobody out, I assure you.
01:04:39What's your title again?
01:04:40Claire.
01:04:41Discharge Liaison Officer.
01:04:43Used to be you'd come into hospital and leave when you got better.
01:04:46You can't do that anymore.
01:04:47Not enough beds, not enough money, so you're here doing a job that shouldn't even exist.
01:04:52I'm here to help this unit run as efficiently as possible.
01:04:58Would you like to see your mother now?
01:05:03It doesn't help, you know.
01:05:04I'm going to go at her.
01:05:05What?
01:05:06I think we're nice to her.
01:05:06She'll be nice to Mum.
01:05:08No.
01:05:08She sees niceness as a weakness.
01:05:10She sees niceness as a weakness.
01:05:40Has she hit you before?
01:05:42I didn't, ma'am.
01:05:45I was struggling with her in the car once.
01:05:48She caught me on the nose, but I think that was an accident.
01:05:51And that's the first time she's done it and meant it.
01:05:53Why do you think she did it?
01:05:55Because she's back in that hospital.
01:05:57She hates it there.
01:06:00We'll find her somewhere else.
01:06:02We did.
01:06:03She went missing five minutes later.
01:06:04You're thinking of bringing her back here, aren't you?
01:06:17Hi, so I'm not at home.
01:06:19Leave a message and I'll get back to you.
01:06:23Yeah.
01:06:24About that coffee, I wondered if we could maybe try again sometime.
01:06:30Coffee?
01:06:38Look, you tried having her back here and you failed.
01:06:42But you got a lucky break.
01:06:43Lucky break?
01:06:45Yes.
01:06:46I'm sorry to be brutal, but yes, a lucky break.
01:06:48And she's back in there now and she's their responsibility, not yours.
01:06:51And they will do it so much better than you ever will
01:06:53because that's what they're trained for.
01:06:56Tell me you won't bring her back here.
01:07:02Why do you want to do it anyway?
01:07:04Half the time she doesn't even recognise you.
01:07:08You're doing it because she's your mother
01:07:09and you've got to be seen to be looking after your mother.
01:07:11It's out of guilt and a fear of what the neighbours will say.
01:07:17The life is over, Jenny.
01:07:18Don't let her ruin yours.
01:07:19You know what?
01:07:24I do feel guilty, yeah.
01:07:26But what about you, Claire?
01:07:28Better to lock me mother up in her home
01:07:30and see me sister running around like a blue-arse fly,
01:07:32making me feel so guilty because I do fuck all.
01:07:34And then feel like I do.
01:07:35Tom Chilver.
01:07:36I'm done.
01:07:38People...
01:07:38I'm finished.
01:07:39People...
01:07:40People...
01:07:40People...
01:07:40People...
01:07:40People...
01:07:41People...
01:07:41...
01:08:03I say something I'm sorry
01:08:33Do you know the best thing a mother can do for her children?
01:08:41Die
01:08:45You are so wrong
01:09:03...
01:09:14...
01:09:16...
01:09:22...
01:09:27...
01:09:31I don't know.
01:10:01I don't know.
01:10:31I don't know.
01:11:01I don't know.
01:11:31I don't know.
01:11:32I don't know.
01:11:33I don't know.
01:11:34I don't know.
01:11:35I don't know.
01:11:36I don't know.
01:11:37I don't know.
01:11:38I don't know.
01:11:39I don't know.
01:11:40I don't know.
01:11:41I don't know.
01:11:42I don't know.
01:11:43I don't know.
01:11:45I don't know.
01:11:46I don't know.
01:11:47I don't know.
01:11:48I don't know.
01:11:49I don't know.
01:11:50I don't know.
01:11:51I don't know.
01:11:52I don't know.
01:11:53I don't know.
01:11:54I don't know.
01:11:55I don't know.
01:11:56I don't know.
01:11:57I don't know.
01:11:58I don't know.
01:11:59I don't know.
01:12:00I don't know.
01:12:01I don't know.
01:12:02I don't know.
01:12:03I don't know.
01:12:04I don't know.
01:12:05You're on call 24 hours a day.
01:12:07And good stuff to patient ratio.
01:12:09Of course we'll have her.
01:12:12Oh, thank you.
01:12:15But it's $700 a week.
01:12:18You'd have to fund that from the sale of your mother's house.
01:12:23She does not own her house, you see.
01:12:25She's well, it's a council house and she would not buy it on principle.
01:12:29Does she have any other assets?
01:12:31No.
01:12:32Then the council would put $400 towards
01:12:34And the rest?
01:12:36Well, you'd have to find that.
01:12:43I wish you hadn't shown me around now.
01:12:48You've tried for NHS continuing healthcare.
01:12:55What?
01:13:04No, no and no.
01:13:08You are not alone only.
01:13:10But the centres and learning habits do not talk about it
01:13:14In Micheal.
01:13:16Thank you!
01:13:52Oh, we can do that.
01:14:14Hello. I'm Rebecca Compton. I'm head of the stroke unit here. You're...
01:14:19Jenny.
01:14:20And you must be Claire.
01:14:21Yes.
01:14:22Sorry it's taken till now to meet, but I've been on secondment.
01:14:25You know Amanda?
01:14:26Yes, we have a pleasure.
01:14:29Right. How's it going?
01:14:31Well, we've seen two nursing homes that are suitable and two that aren't.
01:14:35And the two that are, we can't afford.
01:14:38People do find that they need to lower their sights a bit.
01:14:41We have done.
01:14:42Often it's just appearances. The standard of care, no different.
01:14:45Take Bel Vista, for instance. It looks a bit basic, but it's good.
01:14:49We put my mum in Bel Vista. They lost to the same day.
01:14:53Well, we're not trying to put you under any pressure whatsoever, but we could do with that bed, of course.
01:15:02We understand that.
01:15:03Can I read you something?
01:15:05Of course.
01:15:06Why didn't you mention this?
01:15:18Why didn't you mention this?
01:15:19I thought we did.
01:15:20You didn't.
01:15:20Well, we did assess her informally and she didn't qualify, so...
01:15:24Well, can you do it formally, please?
01:15:25Well, that would be a waste of time, I'm afraid.
01:15:26We do that only if you insist.
01:15:27Oh, we insist.
01:15:28OK.
01:15:29But don't build your hopes up.
01:15:30Please, don't do that.
01:15:32Oh, we insist.
01:15:45OK.
01:15:46OK? But don't build your hopes up.
01:15:51Please, don't do that.
01:16:10Auntie Claire! Auntie Claire!
01:16:13Yeah?
01:16:16Claire with your clothes.
01:16:17Hey! Not for you!
01:16:19Hands off!
01:16:20Your mum.
01:16:23Is Nick still on the scene?
01:16:31This came this morning.
01:16:33Mum's assessment.
01:16:36It's been rejected.
01:16:38Is he married?
01:16:40What do we do?
01:16:41We appeal.
01:16:44Is he married?
01:16:45No.
01:16:46Good.
01:16:47Don't attack them.
01:16:50Do you want to do it?
01:16:52Do you want to do it?
01:16:53If you'd like to take a seat?
01:16:58Good morning.
01:16:59Good morning.
01:17:00Good morning.
01:17:01Good morning.
01:17:02Good morning.
01:17:03Good morning.
01:17:04Good morning.
01:17:05Good morning.
01:17:06Good morning.
01:17:07Good morning.
01:17:08Good morning.
01:17:09Good morning.
01:17:10Good morning.
01:17:15Good morning.
01:17:16Good morning.
01:17:20Good morning.
01:17:21Good morning.
01:17:26My name is James Simpson, and I will be chairing this independent review panel's scrutiny of the rejection of Mary Taylor's application for NHS continuing health care.
01:17:28My name is James Simpson and I will be chairing this independent review panel scrutiny of
01:17:38the rejection of Mary Taylor's application for NHS continuing healthcare. Could we all
01:17:44please introduce ourselves? Angela Bellman, geriatric nurse.
01:17:48David Tully, psychiatric nurse. Shirley Woodford, social services administrator.
01:17:54Jenny Northwood, Mary's daughter. Claire Taylor, Mary's daughter.
01:17:58We were expecting someone from the hospital but as it's well past 10 o'clock we'll make a start without them.
01:18:03I apologise that you've been kept waiting.
01:18:06I am so sorry I was held up on the water.
01:18:09Then if you'd like to give us your name and take a seat we'll carry on.
01:18:13Amanda Jennings, discharge liaison officer, standing in for Rebecca Compton, head of the stroke unit.
01:18:19First I'd like to invite members of the panel to ask you both any questions they may have. Is that alright with you?
01:18:31Can you tell us a bit about your mother before the stroke?
01:18:37She was very independent. She lived on her own since Dad died. She did everything for herself.
01:18:44Did she have mobility problems? No. Her knees sometimes but...
01:18:49And did she have any hobbies?
01:18:51Politics in general, labour party in particular, likes the telly, wildlife shows, bit of drama, news night.
01:19:04And her personality?
01:19:06Self-contained, very proud, very principled.
01:19:12And directly after the stroke, did her personality change?
01:19:16Yes.
01:19:18She became noisy, uninhibited, angry.
01:19:22She kept seeing her father and every man on the ward.
01:19:25And how's her behaviour now?
01:19:27Even worse.
01:19:29Jenny's called in nearly every day to feed and medicate her because the staff can't cope.
01:19:33She's violent and lashes out with them.
01:19:36Out of terror, I think.
01:19:39Or pain.
01:19:41Can I...
01:19:45Why all this?
01:19:48I'll tell you why.
01:19:49Money.
01:19:51There's nearly a million old people with dementia.
01:19:53And to give them the treatment they need will cost serious money.
01:19:56And why spend serious money on the oath?
01:19:59Hence all this.
01:20:00Hence you, Amanda, barring the gates, playing Godward People's Life.
01:20:04Well, that's fine.
01:20:06But you're not gonna do with my mother's...
01:20:08I'm sorry.
01:20:11I'm just kidding.
01:20:12I'm sorry.
01:20:13I'm sorry.
01:20:14I'm sorry.
01:20:16I'm sorry.
01:20:17I'm sorry.
01:20:18There's a report in front of you.
01:20:30There's a report in front of you.
01:20:40I think you'll remember, Amanda, that we went to the Court of Protection
01:20:45because Mum wasn't capable of granting us power of attorney.
01:20:48Yeah.
01:20:50To do that, you need a consultant's report, so I'd like to read that to you, if I may.
01:21:24She has lost mental health issues and has lost the ability to make decisions.
01:21:27There has been no evidence of any improvement.
01:21:30It's likely that these adverse effects will be long-term.
01:21:33She needs supervision and 24-hour care from qualified nursing staff
01:21:37for her medication and other daily activities.
01:21:41So he seems to think she's seriously ill.
01:21:43You seem to think she's fine.
01:21:45Why is there such a difference?
01:21:46And there's another form in front of you.
01:21:57This is a questionnaire that my mother supposedly filled in.
01:22:02This is the document that I think cost my mother her continuing health care.
01:22:10Do you feel happy?
01:22:11Answer A, all of the time.
01:22:13B, most of the time.
01:22:15C, rarely.
01:22:16D, never.
01:22:16My mother has answered B, most of the time.
01:22:21And there's lots of other questions on there, as you can see,
01:22:24that my mother's answered A's and B's for, nothing critical whatsoever.
01:22:28So this woman who the consultant described as unable to understand
01:22:33and difficult to communicate with
01:22:35has answered every single answer on this form.
01:22:40You're saying someone else filled it in?
01:22:43Yeah, I am.
01:22:44I mean, if you gave my mother a form, she'd eat it.
01:22:48Miss Jennings?
01:22:52I can't explain it, I'm afraid.
01:22:54Anything else?
01:23:03Yeah.
01:23:08My mum's been in hospital just twice before.
01:23:12When she had me, and when she had Claire.
01:23:16Apart from that, she has not cost the NHS a penny,
01:23:20yet she's contributed to it her whole working life.
01:23:22Well, now she's sick.
01:23:26She needs 24-hour nursing care.
01:23:29She needs a doctor, a counsellor,
01:23:32a gastroenterologist, a physiotherapist.
01:23:35I mean, my mother deserves these things.
01:23:37She deserves a place that meets her needs.
01:23:49Anything else?
01:23:49Miss Jennings?
01:23:59In that case, can I ask you both to step outside for five minutes
01:24:01whilst we have a quick chat?
01:24:03Hey.
01:24:16Hi.
01:24:17Thanks.
01:24:18Hey.
01:24:31Hi.
01:24:32Thanks.
01:24:35Disabonage.
01:24:37Yeah.
01:24:38I'm sorry.
01:24:48Can I say something?
01:25:01I'd like to give you all a break.
01:25:04Treat dementia with the seriousness it deserves in hospitals like mine.
01:25:08But do you know what that means?
01:25:12A nurse being called away from a young person fighting for life
01:25:16because an old woman in the next room has shit herself.
01:25:23Please come in.
01:25:36Thank you for your patience.
01:25:46The committee must decide only on the evidence before us.
01:25:53However, we are in agreement that this assessment does not accurately reflect the state of Mary's health
01:26:01and we are therefore ordering a new assessment to be carried out as soon as possible.
01:26:06This will take a while, but I can tell you now that we are minded to allow your appeal.
01:26:11So you should go ahead and look for a nursing home that can cater for Mary's needs
01:26:16and if, as I believe, you have already found one
01:26:19then perhaps you should start talking seriously to them.
01:26:24You'll receive a letter confirming this hopefully within the next couple of weeks.
01:26:29Thank you for your time.
01:26:30Good to meet you.
01:26:30We're thinking of adopting.
01:26:50Been on the IVF for a while now and...
01:27:02So, we're trying something else.
01:27:04Good to meet you.
01:27:34Hello, Mary.
01:27:59Welcome to Marsha.
01:28:00Relax.
