00:00Hello and welcome to Bargain Hunt. Today we're in West Wales, famous for its
00:06beautiful castles and its links to myths, legends and folklore. And according to
00:12some it was also home to that well-known wizard Merlin. Later I'll be learning
00:18about some local traditions and mysterious objects such as the magic eye
00:24and an ancient oak tree. But first let's go bargain hunting!
00:51Today's red and blue teams will be searching for collectibles at this
00:55antique centre in the Pembrokeshire town of Narborough. Both teams have £300 to
01:01buy three items with only one hour on the clock. One item must cost at least £75
01:05and there is my challenge to take care of. Whoever makes the biggest profit or
01:11the smallest loss will be crowned the winners. Let's meet today's teams.
01:16I'm Madele and I'm Michelle. We're the Welsh Dragons and we're here to play the blues.
01:21That's fighting talk. What kind of team will you be?
01:25A successful one? Yes we are, we're going to be the best team.
01:28Who's in charge? Michelle's the boss.
01:31I try not to but yeah I think I have problems here.
01:36What will you be looking for? Like a bit of pottery, a bit of silver and we're just
01:41really going to go for what we like. Good plan. Those are the Reds, let's see who
01:46they're up against. I'm Sarah. And I'm Pete. We love wacky and weird. Just look at this beard.
01:54It is impressive. What are you into? Anything to do with cows. Love cows. And I love skulls.
02:02OK. Well you make a good team. I'm going to be aware of the time. And I'll be aware of the cost.
02:08Yes. The money man. The money. Any tactics? I'm going to try and find something really,
02:14really cheap. Well good luck. Let's get going. Hello team. How are you? How are you all?
02:22All excited, ready to go. Are you competitive? Oh yes. We're the most competitive team.
02:28I love the fighting talk. Brilliant. Now what's the first thing you need before I set you off?
02:33Money. Mm-hmm. Reds, who wants the cash? Me, please. Right. Adele, I've got £300 for you.
02:40Blues. Yeah. Peter, you're going to hide it under your hat. I could do. There you go. Thank you.
02:47So that means Michelle, you get the challenge. Thank you. Sarah. Thank you. What's the final
02:52thing you need? An expert. Two fabulous experts waiting patiently for you. So off you go.
02:59Just a lot can have fun. They've got a great competitive spirit, but what are they looking
03:03for in an expert? Somebody who's knowledgeable. Somebody who'll keep us in line.
03:08Someone who lets us be the boss. And a really good negotiator for their bonus bar.
03:13And the sense of humour. I hope I've got all three.
03:17For the Reds, it's Richard Madley. How are you? Surprise! Oh!
03:23And for the Blues, it's Izzy Varmer. How are you guys?
03:26Right, teams, time to open those challenges. An item containing red.
03:31That's got to be a lucky colour for us, hasn't it? So it could be a bit of porcelain, pottery.
03:36An item containing blue. Ooh, blue for blue team. Excellent. Go blue team.
03:43Make it snappy, teams. Your shopping starts now.
03:46Time's ticking. Let's go. We got this.
03:49They're off. We're shopping.
03:51Clock's on. 60 minutes.
03:53And already the Blues are talking tactics.
03:56So we had a plan to get two really cheap items.
04:01Yes. Good. I like this plan. And then a big spend.
04:04And then spend a lot of time on the big spend. OK.
04:07Well, Izzy seems happy with that.
04:10Over with the Reds, Michelle seems something red from my challenge.
04:14That's quite nice. Yeah, drawn by the colour. What does it say on the label there?
04:18Opaline. Uh-huh.
04:20Glass vase. Possibly made in Italy.
04:22Hmm. 50 pounds.
04:24No, I think that's one I'll possibly pass on.
04:28Richard's not keen.
04:30Meanwhile, the Blues have spotted something that could meet their challenge.
04:34They look like they're probably sapphires.
04:36Shall we get it out? Yeah.
04:37Shall we ask the dealer for a key and have a closer look?
04:39Yeah. Then have a look. Yeah.
04:40Let's do that.
04:41Whilst the Blues wait for the key, is it time for tea?
04:45An enamel teapot of extraordinary proportions.
04:50That's actually really nice. Yeah, that's really quirky.
04:52It is, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah.
04:54It is priced at 55 pounds. Now...
04:58What do you think is something like that? I'd want to buy it for about 30 pounds.
05:0130 pounds, yeah. Yeah.
05:02And hoping to make 10 or 15 pounds on it.
05:04But anyway, there it is. Yeah.
05:06We can look. It doesn't cost nothing to look.
05:08The pricey teapots are no.
05:10Back to the Blues who are taking a closer look at a ring.
05:14Buy it on, see if it fits.
05:16It's a nice classic style, isn't it?
05:18It is.
05:19So the Bluestones, diamonds, sapphires, particularly diamonds, they are...
05:22People do like them.
05:23It's a lot at 159. Yeah, yeah.
05:25Yeah. What kind of money would that fetch at auction?
05:27Maybe 60 to 80. Yeah.
05:29And on a good day, if two people want it, you might get into three figures.
05:32But we are quite a long way off. Yeah, we are a long way off.
05:34But what is the best price on it?
05:35I think on this, we could go 130.
05:38You wouldn't go 100?
05:40I don't think they'd go 100, I know.
05:42Bad burner.
05:43Good try, Sarah.
05:45Now, what's Richard spotted?
05:47It's actually got a nice old look about it.
05:49Yeah, that is better.
05:50That's true.
05:51It's easy to ignore it, but often these are the little treasures in these...
05:56Yeah.
05:57..on these days, things that have been covered up or they're lurking beneath.
06:00Why don't we just take the pieces off it? Take them off.
06:03Yeah, let's... Well, let's have a look at it.
06:05Oh, there's a ticket.
06:07Oh, look at that. Here is a ticket.
06:10It's a handmade bench.
06:12And it's £80.
06:14Hmm.
06:15Hmm.
06:16I'd want to be buying that for you for about £40...
06:20Yeah.
06:21..to try and make you a £20 profit.
06:22Yeah.
06:23OK.
06:24So, thanks very much.
06:25We'll just put it back again.
06:27So, while the Reds keep searching, the Blues have found this.
06:32The coat rack.
06:33Ah, OK.
06:34So, £120.
06:37It's not old.
06:38It's a modern piece in an older style.
06:40Yeah.
06:41But it's certainly got a good look to it.
06:42It's a useful item.
06:44What do you like about it, Pete?
06:46Just its chunkiness, the heft to it.
06:51What do you think?
06:52It's OK.
06:53Would you have it in your house?
06:55No.
06:56Probably not.
06:57You knew Sarah was going to say no.
06:59Yeah.
07:00That's why you like it.
07:01I mean, it's £120.
07:02Yeah, it's a lot of money.
07:03It is a lot of money.
07:04Yeah.
07:05Yeah.
07:06Shall we ask the best price?
07:07No.
07:08No, OK.
07:09It's a definite no.
07:10That's definite.
07:11Let's wander.
07:12If it doesn't hook you in, move on.
07:15These look colourful, Richard.
07:16It's a group here of three Persian enamel dishes and bowls.
07:23Mm-hm.
07:24You know we had to find something with red on it.
07:26If you look hard on this Persian enamel dish,
07:29there are flashes of red, aren't there?
07:31Yeah.
07:32And on this shaped oval dish,
07:35and again, on this bowl,
07:37again, tiny little red flower heads.
07:40The ticketed price for all three...
07:43Oh, 25.
07:45£25.
07:46I'm not sure where it's red and F, though, Richard.
07:49You know, we've got to satisfy the challenge.
07:52Yes.
07:53The words are an item containing red.
07:55Yeah.
07:56It doesn't have to be hold red.
07:57I don't know if I like them enough.
07:59Mm-hm.
08:00Mm-hm.
08:01OK.
08:02Could we come back to them?
08:03I'll go off and just find out
08:04if they could be bought for £20,
08:06and if they can be,
08:07I'll ask them to put them on hold for us.
08:09OK.
08:10So we've got them on our list.
08:11Yeah.
08:12Lovely.
08:13OK.
08:14I'm not sure they're keen, Richard.
08:16Over with the blues,
08:17something's caught Pete's eye.
08:19Rather handsome cat.
08:21Do you have cats?
08:23We used to.
08:24We've had for many years.
08:26Oh, he's nice.
08:27Have a look.
08:28Have a look.
08:29He's quite handsome, isn't he?
08:30He's nice.
08:31He's got this crackle glaze on.
08:33I agree, he's nice.
08:34People love cats.
08:35Yeah.
08:36Yeah, true.
08:37They've good size.
08:38What's the price?
08:39£48 on the ticket.
08:41Well, why don't we ask her best price and just see?
08:43Because then we know where we're at.
08:44Yes.
08:45Yeah.
08:46OK.
08:47Good point.
08:48Let's ask the dealer.
08:49OK.
08:50Whilst the blues get a price for the cat,
08:51the reds have spotted something unusual.
08:54Oh!
08:55The red rolling pin.
08:56Yeah, indeed.
08:57Well, I rather like that sort of, er, type of decoration.
09:02These were made in Nailsea, outside of Bristol.
09:06These were made in the 19th century, er, and in fact they're still...
09:09So it is quite old then?
09:10Yeah, yeah, indeed.
09:11Are they just a decorative item, or were they...?
09:14Well, no, they were actually used, practically.
09:16Ah.
09:17They could have been used in the kitchen for rolling out pastry.
09:20And they were very popular, you know.
09:22Yeah.
09:2310, 20 years ago.
09:24I'm not quite so sure today.
09:26I can't see a price on it.
09:28Er, £60, so.
09:29Let's say it's marked at £60.
09:31We could get some discount on it, but I think...
09:34You'd have to have a lot of a discount to get a profit.
09:36Yeah, we would.
09:37OK, let's go.
09:38OK, right, OK.
09:39We won.
09:40Very decisive, Michelle.
09:43Now, what's the news on the cat?
09:45The ticket price is £48.
09:46Erm, I think I can definitely do £40 on that.
09:48And the absolute bottom price?
09:50What were you hoping for?
09:51I was hoping it might start with a...
09:54Two.
09:55Two.
09:56I can give them a ring.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Yeah.
09:59We'll do that.
10:00Thank you very much.
10:01The cat's not in the bag yet.
10:03And from cats to hats,
10:05There is indeed a red interior in this 19th century bucket
10:10made from a Georgian hat box.
10:14OK.
10:15It looks like a very posh bucket.
10:17Very posh, isn't it?
10:18It's priced at £80.
10:20And I happen to know that the stall holder has said
10:23that he would discount anything on this stand by 30%.
10:28So, therefore, with an £80 ticket on it,
10:31he's knocking off £24.
10:34OK.
10:35I think that's...
10:36OK.
10:37Come on through here.
10:38Anything red through here?
10:39Let's go and have a look.
10:40So, while they keep browsing,
10:42the blues are sticking with their animal theme.
10:45What about this one?
10:46Oh, I see where you're going.
10:47Blue tail.
10:48Look!
10:49Nice and containing blue.
10:50And it's red.
10:51Red and blue for bargain.
10:52Yeah.
10:53Absolutely.
10:54I just think he's cute.
10:55Yeah?
10:56Yeah.
10:57I think he's very charming.
10:59Bit of art glass.
11:00It's a glass paperweight.
11:01Yeah.
11:02It's nice.
11:03Paperweights went through a phase of being extremely popular,
11:05so they're not always sort of the round ones you think of.
11:07Yeah.
11:08You can get them modelled as animals.
11:09But nowadays, I mean, you could have it on a desk,
11:11but I think someone would just have it as a decorative object.
11:13Yeah.
11:14Perhaps someone who loves bunny rabbits.
11:15Yeah.
11:16What's the price?
11:17So, it says ten.
11:19OK.
11:20We're making you work today, Neil.
11:21You are so right.
11:22Would there be anything you could do for us on that one, please?
11:26I'll tell you what.
11:27As is you.
11:28Yes.
11:29I'll go nine.
11:30Ooh.
11:31There's also not a lot of money here.
11:32No, it's not a lot of money.
11:33Ten pounds.
11:34We wanted, we wanted, yeah.
11:35We wanted two cheap items.
11:36We did.
11:37So, he ticks that box.
11:38Yeah, he does.
11:39Yeah.
11:40I think there might be a small profit.
11:41On a bad day, it's five to ten.
11:42But on a good day, ten to fifteen, ten to twenty.
11:45We'll take the risk, shall we?
11:46Let's take the risk.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Let's get it done.
11:49Thank you very much.
11:52Thank you, Neil.
11:53Well done, Blues.
11:54Fifteen minutes into your shop and that's your first item bought.
11:57And it ticks off my challenge of something containing blue.
12:01Now, Adele seems taken by some silver.
12:04Poor little dishes there.
12:06Yes, sweet.
12:07I think they're really decorative.
12:08Yes.
12:09Really, yeah, really sweet.
12:10Very pretty, yeah.
12:11You were drawn to, I could tell.
12:13Yes, yeah.
12:14I really like them.
12:15I think they're really, really pretty.
12:17Yes.
12:18And the work that's gone into them.
12:19With your reaction so far, I feel I've got to go and get the cabinet open.
12:24While Richard finds the key, Sarah has spotted something colourful.
12:29Oh, they'll be Rosenthal, a Rosenthal design.
12:32They used to be collectible.
12:33Nowadays, not so much at auction.
12:35OK.
12:36You sort of find that you can have a set of them and they don't do fantastically well.
12:39OK.
12:40But they're very pretty and decorative.
12:41But how much are they?
12:42£15.
12:43For each of them, I'd imagine.
12:45Yeah.
12:46It's going to be around that at auction in terms of its value.
12:49Yeah, that's fine.
12:50Yeah.
12:51OK.
12:52Yeah.
12:53Keep looking.
12:54Meanwhile, the Reds are weighing up those silver dishes.
12:57Are they heavy?
12:58Not very heavy.
12:59No, I thought they'd...
13:00Oh, you thought they'd be heavier, didn't you?
13:01Yeah, I did.
13:02Yes, indeed.
13:03Well, they are silver.
13:04They're solid silver.
13:05I don't know.
13:06At £68, before we negotiate, and that's at £40.
13:09Yeah.
13:10You liked the little one more, didn't you?
13:12Yeah, I just thought he was...
13:13Yeah, yeah, indeed.
13:14Yeah, OK.
13:15But would you like to find out what they could be bought?
13:16Yes.
13:17Yeah.
13:18Time to get Neil in.
13:19This one's £68.
13:20I could do £61 on that.
13:22And then the smaller one is £40.
13:24We'd go £36 on that.
13:26Does £36 work for you?
13:27£36 isn't an increment in the auction room,
13:30so he'd be going £32, £35, £38,
13:33so £36 would be...
13:34Right.
13:35So we would need the extra pound.
13:37I know it's...
13:38I'm splitting hairs, but...
13:39No, go on.
13:40Go on, £35, done.
13:41Thank you, Neil.
13:42So...
13:43So do you think there's a bit more of a profit in the £35 one?
13:45Yes.
13:46Yes.
13:47That is better value.
13:48What do you think of that?
13:49Erm, yeah, it's right at the top.
13:50I think we have to go for that one.
13:51I could tell you liked it.
13:52As soon as I walked past that company, it made you smile, didn't you?
13:55Yeah.
13:56All of a sudden...
13:57Yeah.
13:58Yeah.
13:59Yes.
14:00Yes, I agree.
14:01Marvellous.
14:02Thank you very much.
14:03Neil, thank you.
14:04We're going to have the little one.
14:05£35.
14:06Sold.
14:07Brilliant.
14:08Well done, Reds.
14:09You got there in the end.
14:10Both teams now have one item each,
14:11but with half their time gone, they need to pick up the pace.
14:14Was Sarah spotted for the Blues?
14:17It says it's a Welsh fireside stall, I think.
14:21You could get two bums on there.
14:23Really?
14:24Couldn't you?
14:25Couldn't get two of mine on there.
14:26Well, you'd be facing away.
14:28Right.
14:29Come on, we're going to test this.
14:30There we are.
14:31You and me.
14:32Right.
14:33I'll have the big end.
14:34OK.
14:35I'll perch myself this end.
14:36There we are.
14:37Oh, I think we could actually.
14:38There we are.
14:39We can both put on.
14:40Not that comfy though, I've got the lumpy.
14:41No, it's not comfy.
14:42I think it's a bench for one.
14:43Yeah.
14:44But it's very nice.
14:45So how much is this one?
14:4788.
14:48Right.
14:49Let's see what Neil's at.
14:50Right, let's ask.
14:51Yep.
14:52While Izzy looks for Neil, the Reds have headed outside.
14:55Oh, look at the crowns.
14:56What do you think?
14:57What do you think?
14:58I do like them.
14:59And I love that rusted, rustic look, don't you?
15:01Yeah, with greens and all that.
15:02I think they're splendid.
15:03I do think they're splendid.
15:04Yeah.
15:05They would be of relatively recent manufacture.
15:08I love the fact that there's three of them there.
15:10Yeah.
15:11I'm hoping we might get more than one.
15:14Yes, yeah.
15:15Aren't you?
15:16Yes, it would be.
15:17I've got no idea how much they are.
15:19No, I don't.
15:20There's no price on them.
15:21There's no, you know, we're looking to spend £75.
15:24Should we actually go and find out?
15:26Yeah, find out, yeah.
15:27Yeah.
15:28While the Reds get a price for the crowns, what's the news on the £88 bench?
15:33Yeah.
15:34I could go down to £79 on that one.
15:37Would you come down to £75?
15:39£75.
15:40Yeah, go on then, £75.
15:42Twisting my arm there, but £75.
15:44We can think about it.
15:45Yeah.
15:46OK, well, we know it's here.
15:47We know it's for you for £75.
15:51It's another maybe.
15:53Back to the Reds and their crowns.
15:55They're £55 each.
15:57OK.
15:58That's the best price today if...
16:01The best, we could probably take...
16:04£10 off you today, so £40, £45.
16:06And what if we bought two of them?
16:09We could take another £5 off the two, so it would be £85 for the two.
16:13What are you thinking?
16:14I really like them.
16:15I really like them.
16:16Yeah.
16:17Could you come down a little bit more?
16:19That is the price, I'm afraid.
16:20Yeah.
16:21The two are £85 for the pair.
16:22I think that's...
16:23Yeah, I think that's...
16:24One each, yeah?
16:25Yes.
16:26Buying something that you both like, is that...
16:27Are we all good?
16:28Yes.
16:29Yes.
16:30Yes.
16:31So should we say that they're sold?
16:32A deal?
16:33Yes.
16:34Yes.
16:35Good job, Reds.
16:36That's your big spend sorted.
16:38£85 for the two rustic crowns.
16:41Just 15 minutes left and, Blues, you've only bought one item.
16:45Are you worried, Izzy?
16:47The shot started really well and we all loved the bunny, but it's gone downhill since then
16:52and we haven't really seen anything that Pete and Sarah love.
16:55I think we might be cutting it to the wire and end up with two hurried purchasers at the end.
17:00So while Izzy cracks the whip, the Reds are focusing on their challenge, an item containing red.
17:06Well, that particular colour is referred to as cranberry.
17:10So cranberry glass was introduced in the 19th century.
17:15It's just a nice term for red glass.
17:18Can you just tell me from here how much the vase is?
17:23Yes.
17:24First quality and it's got ND £30.
17:27That's either no damage or no discount, £30.
17:30I'm feeling that.
17:32However, I can see you're just thinking...
17:35Yes, very decorative.
17:37I think the design is really pretty as well.
17:40And of course, we cannot forget our three Persian enamel dishes.
17:45Yes.
17:46So we've got a shopping list, we've got 15 minutes.
17:48Shall we go and look at one other item to add to a list and then you just choose?
17:52Yes.
17:53Easy as that.
17:54Yes.
17:55The Reds have a plan.
17:57Now, whatever happened to that glazed cat?
17:59So, were you able to find out the best price?
18:02I have.
18:03And very generously.
18:04She said she'll do it for you for £25.
18:06Aww.
18:07What do you reckon, Izzy?
18:08Shall we go for it?
18:09I like it.
18:10I like it.
18:11It's £25.
18:12That's a bargain.
18:13Let's do it.
18:14Excellent.
18:15Thank you, Neil.
18:17Cheers, guys.
18:18Thank you very much.
18:19Awesome.
18:20Great work, Blues.
18:21The ceramic cat for £25 is a perfect second buy.
18:25Well, you came here to get a bargain and I think that might be our bargain of all day.
18:28Yeah.
18:29Brilliant.
18:30Just your big spend left to find.
18:32Are you thinking the bench?
18:33I'm thinking the bench.
18:34Let's go and see.
18:35OK.
18:36You only have eight minutes left, teams.
18:39Now, Reds, what have you got there?
18:41It's almost like one of those sort of whirly gigs, isn't it?
18:45Yeah.
18:46A whirly-go-gan.
18:47A whirly-go-gan?
18:48A whirly-go-gan.
18:49A vintage folk art pull-along.
18:52It's £25.
18:53If we got it for 20, everything's going to cost 20.
18:56Do you like that?
18:57I do like that.
18:58Do you like that, Adele?
18:59Do you like the whirly-go-gan?
19:00I do like the whirly-go-gan.
19:02Can we try and pull it on its own?
19:04Of course we can.
19:05We can do anything we want with.
19:06I'm sure.
19:07I don't know.
19:08We've got to find out.
19:09Have a look if it works.
19:10Ah, the whirly-go-gan.
19:11OK.
19:12Can you see?
19:13Yeah, well.
19:14Go on.
19:15Ah, ah, ah, ah.
19:16Well, you can do the pulling bit.
19:18You can't do the whirly bit.
19:19Yeah.
19:20I do like it, but if it's not working...
19:22Yeah.
19:23Leave it, then.
19:25The Blues are back at the bench, but are they going to buy it?
19:28We need to spend 75.
19:29It's made in Wales.
19:30I think we should do it.
19:31Let's do it.
19:32Yeah.
19:33Yeah.
19:34Definitely.
19:35Yes.
19:37Thank you very much.
19:38Thank you, guys.
19:40Thank you very much.
19:42Yay!
19:43We've done it!
19:44Well done, Blues.
19:45That's your final item sorted and your big spin ticked off.
19:48£75 for the wooden bench.
19:50Happy?
19:51Yeah, happy.
19:52Brilliant.
19:53Brilliant time.
19:54Awesome.
19:56Shall we go and celebrate?
19:57Yeah.
19:58Definitely.
19:59These.
20:00These.
20:01In unison.
20:02A decision at last.
20:03The three Persian dishes for £20 take off my challenge.
20:05Nice work.
20:06Right team, shopping is over.
20:08Let's put them down.
20:09Yeah.
20:10Let's go and put the kettle on.
20:11A cup of tea.
20:12A cup of tea sounds good.
20:13Let's remind ourselves what the red team bought.
20:15Their first buy was the ornate silver dish for £35.
20:19Next, they bought the two rustic crowns for £85, which was their big spend.
20:24And they finished their shop with my challenge.
20:26It was the first time to take off my challenge.
20:28Take off my challenge.
20:29Nice work.
20:31Right team, shopping is over.
20:32Put them down.
20:33Yeah.
20:34Let's go and put the kettle on.
20:35A cup of tea.
20:36A cup of tea sounds good.
20:37Let's remind ourselves what the red team bought.
20:38Their first buy was the ornate silver dish for £35.
20:41Next, they bought the two rustic crowns for £85, which was their big spend.
20:44My challenge.
20:45The parishion dishes for £20.
20:47Reds, you were a pair of Welsh dragons on fire today, weren't you?
20:51Yes, we were.
20:52Now, Richard, you were not the boss today.
20:55No, they knew what they wanted.
20:57I just followed.
20:58How was it?
20:59Did you have fun?
21:00We had a fabulous time and Richard got so knowledgeable.
21:03It was fab.
21:04Let's talk favourites.
21:05What was your favourite item, Adele?
21:06My favourite item was the silver trinket dish.
21:09Right.
21:10I thought it was beautiful.
21:11Okay.
21:12Michelle, what about you?
21:13The crowns were my favourite.
21:14Right, okay.
21:15Now, that was a big spend item.
21:16It was, yeah.
21:17Okay.
21:18So, do you think they will make the most profit at auction?
21:20I don't think so.
21:21I think the silver trinket dish will make the biggest profit.
21:24Okay.
21:25Adele, what do you think will make the biggest profit?
21:27I think the silver dish as well.
21:28Oh.
21:29So, tell me, how much did you spend in total?
21:32We spent £140.
21:34So, you've left Richard £160 if you hand it over.
21:37Yeah.
21:38Quite a lot of cash there, Richard.
21:40There is indeed.
21:41Any thoughts on what you would do with it?
21:43I'm going to buy something that isn't quite what it appears on first sight.
21:49Oh, I'm intrigued, ladies.
21:50Yeah.
21:51Okay.
21:52So, while Richard goes off to buy his mysterious bonus buy, let's remind ourselves what the
21:56blue team bought.
21:58They hopped into action buying the rabbit paperweight for £9, which ticked off my challenge of
22:04something containing blue.
22:07Their second buy was a glazed cat for £25.
22:13And they finished with their big spend, the wooden bench for £75.
22:20Blues, you made that look easy.
22:22You found the challenge quickly.
22:24You had lots of options on the back burner.
22:26Did you have fun?
22:27We had fun.
22:28Okay.
22:29And how was Miss Balmer with the shopping?
22:31Fantastic.
22:32Fabulous.
22:33Izzy, you look surprised.
22:34No, it was good.
22:35It started out quite chilled and then we just had a little rush at the end.
22:38Yeah.
22:39But all good.
22:40Tell me, what was your favourite item, Peter?
22:41The cat.
22:42You were a cat lover too?
22:43Yeah.
22:44All right, put it there.
22:45Put it there, okay.
22:47Sarah, what was your favourite item?
22:48The rabbit paperweight.
22:50Now, the paperweight was my challenge item.
22:52Yes.
22:53To buy something that contained blue.
22:55But what do you think would make the biggest profit?
22:57The cat.
22:58The cat?
22:59What about you?
23:00The cat.
23:01All right!
23:02So how much did you spend in total?
23:04£109.
23:05Right, so you've left Izzy a whopping £191.
23:09Yes.
23:10Hand it over.
23:11Thank you very much.
23:12Izzy, I hope you've got big pockets for all of that.
23:15What are you planning to do?
23:16I know you were desperate for some silver, so I'm going to see what I can find.
23:19Brilliant.
23:20Well, while Izzy goes off in search of a bonus buy, I'm going to learn about some fascinating
23:24local folklore.
23:25Across the world, every culture has its own stories and superstitions passed down through generations,
23:40from mythical creatures and local legends to magical men and women.
23:44And in this part of West Wales, folklore has played an important role in shaping history.
23:51To find out more, I've come to the Carmarthenshire County Museum to meet folklore expert Dr Owen Williams.
23:57Hi Owen, lovely to meet you.
23:58Hi Ru, nice to meet you too.
23:59Thank you for coming.
24:00Now, Owen, why do you think folklore has been so important to people in this part of Wales?
24:06A lot of these stories around folklore are transmitted through the Welsh language.
24:12It's one way of keeping the language alive and part of the intangible heritage that makes this part of the world so special.
24:19Well, when you think of folklore, you think of stories and superstitions, but it can also be linked to real physical objects like these, can't it?
24:27Objects derive a lot of their meaning from the stories that are attached to them, like this for example.
24:33It looks like part of a tree.
24:35This is a fragment of an oak tree that was planted in nearby Carmarthen town and it's grown to be known as Merlin's Oak by local people.
24:46Merlin as in the wizard?
24:48That's right, yes.
24:50One thing that's been said is that Merlin made a prophecy about this tree.
24:55When Merlin's Oak shall tumble down, then shall fall Carmarthen town.
25:01So the people of Carmarthen thought of it as something sacred.
25:05But sadly, a local man around 1856 decided to poison the tree because local people used it as a meeting place.
25:16He lived nearby and got sick of them discussing their affairs every day.
25:21And did the tale come true? Did Carmarthen town fall?
25:25Well, thankfully not. Carmarthen is still here, luckily.
25:30Now, I never knew that Merlin was thought of as being Welsh, let alone from Carmarthen.
25:35There have been stories dating back over a thousand years that link Merlin to various parts of Wales, but particularly to Carmarthen.
25:45He would probably have been known more as a physician or a prophet, perhaps.
25:51But why do we call him a wizard if he was more of a physician or a prophet?
25:55Because he may well have been somebody who was known as a man of the woods type figure, who was able to maybe predict weather patterns.
26:06And over time, stories got exaggerated.
26:10And so he became associated with magic because that seemed to be the only explanation for people back in those times.
26:17Clearly, it was a very superstitious time. Why do you think that is?
26:21Well, at the time, of course, they didn't have any newspapers or radio.
26:26So stories were often the ways in which people came to understand the world.
26:32And that's how we got the tales of Merlin that we know so well today.
26:36Were there any folklore beliefs that protected against evil at the time?
26:41Yes, there were many. For example, this was once known as the magic eye.
26:48What is it?
26:49It's actually a potato with matchsticks stuck into it.
26:54So what was it actually for?
26:56Well, it was actually used to protect crops.
26:59OK.
27:00So this was found in a Carmarthen garden around about 1910.
27:05And it was hung over a patch of peas growing there.
27:08And it was just believed to have protected them against external threats like insects, birds,
27:17or even bad weather.
27:18Sort of like a medieval starchy scarecrow.
27:21That's absolutely right.
27:22And this object here had a similar purpose of repelling evil.
27:27Now, what is that?
27:28It looks like hair.
27:29Is it human hair?
27:30Animal?
27:31It's actually horse hair.
27:32Horse hair.
27:33It was found hung up on the back of a door in a local town called Larn, only about 20 minutes from here.
27:42It was said to have been hung at the doorway to protect against anything evil coming into the property.
27:51Now, I'm sensing a theme because, you know, this is all about protecting the crops and the home.
27:57Exactly.
27:58It was incredibly important to people, especially in a rural area like Carmarthenshire.
28:04Now, we've talked about these small items, but my eye has been drawn to something magnificent and rather large behind me.
28:11This cauldron is believed to have dated back at least to the 1800s in eastern Carmarthenshire.
28:18It was used by a local wise woman to create all sorts of herbal remedies, salves, balms and tonics.
28:27Now, when you say wise woman, do you mean a witch?
28:30Well, funnily enough, no.
28:33OK.
28:34There are actually very few reported incidents of witches in this part of Wales, and indeed in Wales in general.
28:42Women who came up with herbal remedies were known as wise women, and they were very well respected within their communities.
28:51Whereas witches, of course, were seen as people to be feared.
28:54Owen, thank you so much for your time.
28:56I've loved learning about Carmarthens folklore and its medieval beliefs.
29:01But now it's time to see if our teams can conjure up any magic over at the auction.
29:09And for today's sale, I'm staying in Carmarthens.
29:12I've come to meet auctioneer Ian Taylor.
29:15Ian, lovely to see you.
29:16Thank you very much.
29:17Thanks for coming.
29:18Now, let's get started.
29:19We've got some interesting items here on the table.
29:21So the Reds, Michelle and Adele, were shopping with Richard.
29:25And their first item is this really sweet Victorian silver pin dish.
29:301895, Birmingham silver.
29:33What do you think?
29:34It's really pretty.
29:35Very ornate, with a nice pierced decoration there.
29:38A little bonbon dish.
29:39And there's always a good market for silver in our auctions.
29:42Sounds good.
29:43But what's your estimate?
29:44Well, we've only put £10 to £15 on it.
29:46OK.
29:47Well, the Reds spent £35 on this.
29:49I think that's going to be difficult to achieve, I have to be honest with you.
29:53Might be a little lost there.
29:55More of a retail price?
29:56I would have thought so, yes.
29:57Now, the second item is this quite quirky pair of decorative crown sculptures.
30:03Would you say that they're fashionable?
30:05They are.
30:06We sell a lot of sort of garden and rustic furniture.
30:08OK.
30:09So what's your estimate?
30:10We've put £30 to £40 on them.
30:12I do have a feeling that they might make a little bit more than that.
30:14Well, that would be good, because this is their big spend.
30:17OK.
30:18So £85 they've spent on this.
30:20Yeah.
30:21Yeah.
30:22You never know.
30:23You never know.
30:24I think it's going to be tough.
30:25I think it's going to be tough to get that much.
30:26OK.
30:27Well, fingers crossed.
30:28So moving on to the last item, which is my challenge, to buy something containing red.
30:31And there's a set of these Minakari Persian Enamo dishes.
30:35They are predominantly blue, but there is enough red in there to tick the challenge.
30:40So they've been quite clever here.
30:41What do you make of them?
30:43They are quite nice and decorative.
30:45However, there isn't a huge amount of quality to the pieces.
30:50They're quite light.
30:51OK.
30:52So what do you think they'll make at auction?
30:53For the three, we've only put £10 to £15 on them.
30:56Right.
30:57Well, they got the three of them for £20, which sounds good, but fingers crossed we need a
31:02bit more, don't we?
31:03Yeah, we could get there.
31:04Right.
31:05OK.
31:06So that is the red team's items.
31:07Now moving on to the blue, we've got Sarah and Pete who are shopping with Izzy.
31:12And their first item is the challenge item, to buy an item containing blue.
31:17And we have, ironically, a red paperweight rabbit, but with a blue pom-pom tail.
31:22So again, they've been creative, haven't they?
31:25I think someone's laughing at my challenges.
31:27So what do you think of the rabbit?
31:29I think it's quite sweet, actually.
31:30There's not much age to it.
31:31A little modern art-class paperweight or deskweight, whatever you want to call it.
31:35What do you think it will make at auction?
31:37We've put a guide price of £20 to £30 on the rabbit.
31:40Right.
31:41Well, that's good.
31:42They only spent £9 on it.
31:43Right.
31:44So you can't really go wrong with it, can you?
31:46They will definitely make a profit on that.
31:47Fabulous.
31:48Now this second item is my favourite because I'm a cat lover.
31:52This is 20th Century Ceramic Study of a Seated Cat.
31:56It's looking very peaceful and serene, don't you think?
31:59It's a good size and it's got this nice sort of salad and glaze which is always popular.
32:03So yeah, I think it should do alright as a decorative piece.
32:06So what's your estimate for Mr Cat?
32:08We've put £15 to £20 on the cart.
32:10Okay, well it costs £25 which I think is doable for a profit.
32:14We're almost there.
32:15Okay.
32:16The final item is a bit of blacksmith salvage in the form of this bench.
32:20It's a really nice piece.
32:21It's industrial but it would also fit into other interiors as well.
32:25Okay, in terms of money, how do you think it will do?
32:27Well again, a difficult thing to value.
32:29It's quite bespoke.
32:30There's not many others around so we've put £30 to £50 on it.
32:33Okay, well this was the Blues big spend.
32:35£75 spent on it.
32:37Okay.
32:38I think we still have a chance though.
32:39Right, okay.
32:40You're feeling hopeful?
32:41Yes.
32:42Okay, well time to head to the rostrum and best of luck.
32:43Thank you very much.
32:44At £90 and I sell at £90 online at £90.
32:48Is the £5 £90?
32:52Reds, how are you feeling? You're at the auction.
32:54Really excited. Looking forward to it.
32:57I'm a bit scared, a bit nervous.
32:58Oh, do you know what?
32:59Say no more because your first item is coming up.
33:01It's your late Victorian silver bonbon dish.
33:04Very sweet, very petite.
33:06£35 spent. Best of luck.
33:08What's that worth? £20?
33:11£20 for it?
33:12£20 is bid online.
33:14At £20.
33:15At £20.
33:16At £20.
33:17At £28.
33:18£28.
33:19£28.
33:20£30.
33:21£30 bid.
33:22Ooh, come on.
33:23Two in the room.
33:24Two in the room.
33:25I will sell.
33:26£30.
33:27Right, okay.
33:28So you bought that for £35.
33:30So for £30.
33:31So you're at a small minus £5 loss.
33:33But you've got your big spend coming up.
33:35Your pair of decorative crown sculptures.
33:39Now you spent £85 on them.
33:41£42.50 each.
33:43Let's see how they do.
33:44Two commission bids putting me in at £35.
33:49£40.
33:50I have £40.
33:52£2.
33:53£5.
33:54£8.
33:55£50.
33:56£55 in the room.
33:57Commission's gone.
33:58£60.
33:59£65.
34:00£70.
34:01£75.
34:02£80.
34:03Oh, come on.
34:04Yes, yes, yes.
34:05£50.
34:06Yes.
34:07Yes.
34:08£95 is bid.
34:09It's in the room against you online.
34:10They're unusual.
34:11£100.
34:12£110.
34:13Oh, well done.
34:15Are you done online?
34:16I'm selling to the room bidder.
34:18For £110.
34:19Yes.
34:20Well done.
34:21We like that.
34:22Yeah.
34:23So that was £85 you spent on it.
34:25So for a whopping £110.
34:26That's a nice £25 profit.
34:28Taking your minus five to a plus 20.
34:3120.
34:32Woo!
34:33Now your last item is your challenge.
34:34Something containing red.
34:35It's your Persian enamel items.
34:37Three for £20.
34:38They're decorative, aren't they?
34:40What are they worth?
34:41£20.
34:4220 for them.
34:43Any interest on a line at 20?
34:4510.
34:46£10.
34:4720 bid online.
34:49Three of them for £10.
34:50Come on.
34:51At 20 only then.
34:52It's a maiden bid then.
34:53In and out.
34:54Sell for 20.
34:55Evens.
34:56Well, folks, you're keeping my numbers nice and easy.
35:00You bought it for 20.
35:01It's sold for 20.
35:02So your plus 20 remains plus 20.
35:05Woo!
35:06But it's a profit, isn't it?
35:08Yeah.
35:09But it's not finished yet.
35:10Of course, you left Richard £160 for his bonus buy.
35:15Do you remember?
35:16Yes.
35:17Right.
35:18So close your eyes.
35:19Nice and tight.
35:20Richard, off you go.
35:21Get your bonus buy.
35:23Okay.
35:24Richard, over to you.
35:26Open your eyes.
35:28And let me show you what I thought was a pottery vase from 20 Paces.
35:35It is, in fact, an art glass vase.
35:38But it's very, very stylish.
35:40It's got that Swedish look about it, which I obviously liked.
35:43But looking at the look on your face, you're thinking, what has Richard bought?
35:47It's marrow-shaped.
35:48I thought it was a vegetable, yeah.
35:50So how much did you pay for it, Richard?
35:53I paid £16 for it.
35:56Ooh.
35:57And how much do you think it'll make?
35:58Well, to remain consistent, I hope it makes at least £20.
36:02I think we go for it.
36:03Okay.
36:04Yeah.
36:05We go for it.
36:06We're back, Richard.
36:07Yeah.
36:08Fabulous.
36:09The Reds are definitely going with Richard's bonus buy.
36:12But what does the auctioneer make of his marrow vase?
36:16I quite like it, actually.
36:17It's got a very good contemporary look about it.
36:19Now, what kind of estimate would you put on this?
36:21Well, based on it, there'd be a no maker's mark, only £10 to £20.
36:25Richard spent £16, so that slides into the middle of your estimate.
36:29So, fingers crossed for a profit.
36:31I think we have a chance.
36:33The good news is, the auctioneer likes it.
36:36He also thought it was pottery until he realised it was glass.
36:40A £10 to £20 estimate put on it.
36:43It's coming up right now.
36:44Best of luck.
36:46We move on to the unusual continental marrow-shaped glass vase.
36:49Good decorator's piece.
36:50What's that worth?
36:51£30.
36:5230 for it.
36:53Yes.
36:5430 to go.
36:55£10.
36:56£10.

37:12£15.
37:13£20.
37:14One more.
37:15£22.
37:16No, are you sure?
37:17£22 the bids then.
37:18£22.
37:19Well done.
37:20That was looking a bit touch and go there, wasn't it?
37:22Yes.
37:23It's over £22.
37:24A lovely profit of £6.
37:26So your plus 20 goes to plus 26.
37:29And well done.
37:30That's a good result but just keep it to yourself.
37:32We will.
37:39Blues.

38:05It's hopping along.
38:06Fantastic.
38:07At £22.
38:08I'll take five.
38:09At £22 then on the commission of me to sell,
38:12the rabbit at £22.

38:15Well done.
38:16Well done.

38:51Well it's lucky.
38:52Lucky 13 cost you £25.
38:55So for £38, so you made £13.

40:01Ta-da!
40:02Oh!
40:03Oh!
40:04So...
40:05It isn't marked as silver, so it's white metal, but I suspect it is silver because there's
40:09a bit of give.
40:10And it's a Humpty Dumpty bookmark.
40:12How much was it?
40:13It paid £14.

40:33Not sure if it's silver.
40:35We'll have to call it white metal.
40:36Mm-hm.
40:37But it is quite pliable.
40:38OK.
40:39What's the estimate on him?
