00:00Bonsoir, my pets. Did y'all miss me?
00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:06And today, we're counting down our picks for the best evildoers on American Horror Story.
00:11We'll only be focusing on the mainline anthology series, so no American Horror Stories villains today.
00:17Spoilers for the first 11 seasons.
00:20We're gonna continue our therapy now, Lana.
00:24Number 20. Chester Krebb.
00:26Most AHS villains have whole seasons to establish themselves and grow.
00:31Chester Krebb, on the other hand, doesn't even show up until the 11th episode of Freak Show, and bows out in the next one.
00:38So, credit the sheer screen magnetism of Neil Patrick Harris for making Chester so memorable.
00:43Ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourselves to witness the death-defying feat first performed by the great Torini for Pope Pius VII.
00:53A traveling salesman and magician, Chester is brought onto the team and eventually becomes the owner of the freak show.
01:00But, he harbors a lot of skeletons in his closet, stemming from a traumatic experience that's channeled through his ventriloquist dummy.
01:07Shh, shh, shh. She doesn't much care for that word. Now, Marjorie, this is a potential employer, so please try to make a good impression.
01:17I always do. You're the real dummy.
01:20In one of the series' goriest moments, Chester's magic box routine goes awry when he actually saws Emma Roberts' Maggie Asmerelda in half.
01:29Ta-da!
01:29On a show that features grisly demises so prominently,
01:36it makes sense that a physical embodiment of death would show up at some point.
01:46Founded in real-world Haitian voodoo,
01:48Papa Legba is a gatekeeper to the spirit world.
01:51Due to many of the characters in Coven practicing witchcraft,
01:55Papa Legba is just a summoning ritual away.
01:57But buyers beware when dealing with Legba.
02:00While he does trade honestly,
02:02his asking prices for the heart's desires are often steep.
02:06Usually the buyer's soul.
02:13It could be argued that Papa Legba is less of a villain
02:16and more of a dark reflection of the people he deals with.
02:19But his antagonistic characterization brought to life by the late great Lance Reddick
02:24is too iconic not to recognize.
02:27Eventually,
02:30everybody pays.
02:35Everybody suffers.
02:37Number 18.
02:39The Butcher.
02:45My idol.
02:47Ah, so that's what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke.
02:51The Butcher was once a woman named Thomasin White,
02:55who was banished from the Roanoke colony and left to die.
02:58However, she was saved by a witch named Skahach,
03:01and developed an allegiance to the supernatural entity.
03:04She soon butchered the colony,
03:07going so far as to kill her own son when he began to rebel against her.
03:10Now,
03:11the Butcher is a disgusting,
03:13rotting supernatural entity
03:15who kills anyone entering her sacred land.
03:18She's nothing but a horrifying monster
03:20who will stop at nothing to keep her land protected.
03:23In short,
03:24she is the stuff of nightmares.
03:27Her message was clear.
03:30We were next.
03:33Number 17.
03:34Edward Mordrake.
03:35The Halloween episodes are a staple of American horror story.
03:39And the two-parter from Freak Show does not disappoint.
03:42A good All Hallows' Eve to you, madam.
03:46Edward Mordrake.
03:50At your service.
03:51Superstition of a 19th century supernatural freak
03:54dissuades many from performing on All Hallows' Eve,
03:57else they invoke his presence.
03:59However,
04:00Elsa Mars' stubbornness and delusions of stardom
04:03summon Mr. Mordrake all the same.
04:05You are a tattered waste of oxygen
04:06who boasts as herself with contempt for others.
04:09I am not here to take you onto greatness, woman.
04:11I am here to take someone with me to the other side.
04:14Perhaps you.
04:15A man with a face in the back of his head
04:17and a mind of his own.
04:18Mordrake killed his troop when he was still alive
04:21and now returns to find the perfect player
04:23to join them in the afterlife.
04:25Don't stop now.
04:26We came for the show.
04:28After an extended vetting process,
04:30he ultimately takes Ciri's figurehead Twisty the Clown
04:33before returning in the finale
04:34to usher Elsa herself into the afterlife.
04:38Number 16.
04:39Mr. Whiteley.
04:40Are you ready for me, doctor?
04:42Uh, yes.
04:44Mr. Whitley?
04:45It's Whiteley.
04:47And I have a rash.
04:49A rash that won't go away.
04:52Taking place at the advent of the AIDS epidemic,
04:55NYC is perhaps the series' most personal and emotional season,
04:58and that extends to the villain as well.
05:00I can tell from your face that you're angry.
05:05Scared.
05:06In pain.
05:07The others were too.
05:09There's a lot of pain in us.
05:11I want to make that legible.
05:13A Vietnam veteran and a nurse in the daylight hours,
05:16Mr. Whiteley is one of the most unassuming villains on the show.
05:19His demure disposition obscures his violent tendencies
05:22and identity as New York's Mai Tai killer.
05:26Disillusioned by society's attitude toward the gay community
05:29and by the lack of solidarity within it,
05:32Whiteley seeks to spotlight their plight and hardships.
05:35By murdering gay men and assembling various body parts
05:38into what he calls the sentinel,
05:40Whiteley's cause is as warped as it is thematically affecting,
05:44proving the writers know how to craft a well-rounded villain.
05:47No one cares about us,
05:49but no one cares what happens to us,
05:52especially the police.
05:53I think I proved my point, don't you?
05:55Number 15.
05:56Stanley.
05:57Clearly, Freak Show has no shortage when it comes to great villains,
06:01and we aren't even done yet.
06:03One of the original mainstays of the show,
06:05Dennis O'Hare has crafted many memorable characters,
06:08but perhaps none so despicable as Stanley.
06:12Knock, knock.
06:13You wanted to see me?
06:14Yeah.
06:20Tell me more about this television.
06:24A con artist through and through,
06:26Stanley values nothing as highly as the almighty dollar.
06:29He'll do anything to make a quick buck,
06:31and unfortunately,
06:33his primary client is the American Morbidity Museum.
06:36Determined to callously sell them real-life oddities,
06:39Stanley poses as a Hollywood agent
06:41to spirit away any freaks against their will.
06:44Nobody cares what happens to a freak.
06:47The only proper question is how we display the body,
06:50under formaldehyde or vacuum sealed.
06:52Trust me.
06:52He causes a great deal of misery,
06:55but as karma would have it,
06:56gets a fate worse than death
06:58that's only fitting of his misdeeds.
07:01Number 14.
07:02The Axeman.
07:03Based on the real,
07:04unidentified serial killer
07:05who operated in early 20th century New Orleans,
07:08the Axeman returns in Coven
07:10as a spirit at Miss Robichaux's Academy.
07:13You might see,
07:13I had a contract.
07:15Promises were made.
07:18And all you've got to do,
07:20sing and dance
07:21and call the witches who owe me my freedom
07:25and I'll provide the music.
07:27In his backstory,
07:29the Axeman promised to spare New Orleans residents
07:31who played jazz music in their home,
07:33while axing those who didn't.
07:35He was thus lured to the Academy,
07:38where the witches promptly dispatched him.
07:40In the present day,
07:42he's summoned by our protagonists
07:43and ultimately freed from the confines
07:45of the Academy grounds.
07:47From there,
07:48the soft-spoken saxophone-playing murderer
07:50strikes up a relationship with Fiona Good,
07:52which certainly has its ups and downs.
07:54You know,
07:55that's why I took up the saxophone.
07:57You really are good with the ladies.
07:59I'm good.
08:01Played brilliantly by Danny Houston,
08:04the Axeman is a memorable
08:05and, dare we say,
08:07underutilized villain in the AHS universe.
08:10Number 13,
08:11Margaret Booth.
08:131984 is all about subverting tropes
08:15from classic slasher movies.
08:17Initially,
08:18it seems like Benjamin Richter,
08:20aka Mr. Jingles,
08:21is going to be the overarching antagonist
08:23of the season.
08:24However,
08:25it's later revealed
08:26that the 1970 massacre
08:28at Camp Redwood
08:29was actually orchestrated
08:30by its supposed sole survivor,
08:32Margaret Booth.
08:33Why did you come back here?
08:35Finish what I started.
08:40What you started?
08:43Oh,
08:44you poor man.
08:46You never had a chance.
08:48Margaret pinned it on Benjamin
08:49and essentially gaslighted him
08:51into being a killer.
08:52In the present day,
08:53Margaret presents herself
08:54as the friendly and clean-cut director
08:56of the reopened Camp Redwood,
08:58but her appearance belies
09:00a ruthless and bloodthirsty personality.
09:02Do you want to know
09:03the other great thing about God?
09:06You can use him to explain
09:08why something happened,
09:09but you can also use him
09:10to explain why you did something.
09:13Even something horrible.
09:16Isn't that great?
09:17Leslie Grossman is a later addition
09:19to the main AHS cast,
09:20but she definitely made her presence known
09:23in 1984 with Margaret Booth.
09:26Number 12,
09:27Dr. Arthur Arden.
09:28What have you been saying about me?
09:31The truth.
09:32I know who you are.
09:34Arthur Arden served as both the main physician
09:36and administrator at Briarcliff Manor,
09:38a sanitarium for the mentally ill.
09:40However,
09:41Arden is less caring physician
09:43and more psychotic
09:44ex-Nazi war criminal
09:46who enjoys torturing his patients
09:47without anesthetic.
09:49I hope you don't mind
09:50if I don't use anesthetic.
09:52It interferes with my readings.
09:53Arden is a completely psychotic man
09:55who's interested in advancing human evolution
09:57through his experiments.
09:59However,
09:59in practice,
10:00all he's really done
10:01is sadistically torture his patients
10:03and create nasty zombies.
10:05If you think that's bad,
10:06just remember that Arden was based
10:08on an all-too-real Nazi physician
10:09named Joseph Mengele,
10:11who conducted horrific experiments
10:13on the prisoners of Auschwitz.
10:15You were a very naughty girl last night.
10:17You tried to fly away.
10:18So I had to clip your wings,
10:20but not to worry.
10:21My surgical training was impeccable.
10:24Number 11,
10:25James Patrick March.
10:26The Hotel Cortez
10:27is arguably the most haunted location
10:30in the AHS universe
10:31with a truly bloody history.
10:34And a lot of that
10:35has to be attributed
10:35to its creator,
10:36James Patrick March.
10:38Ah, yes.
10:41That light in the loafers fellow
10:42that bought my hotel.
10:43Very good, darling.
10:44Very good.
10:46Might I suggest
10:46that when you murder him,
10:47you do so off the property?
10:49It'd be damned awkward
10:50to keep running into him
10:51for all eternity.
10:52A wealthy serial killer
10:53from the early 20th century,
10:55March erected the Hotel Cortez
10:57as a base of operations
10:58to hide his many atrocities.
11:00In the present day,
11:01he continually returns
11:02as one of the hotel's many spirits
11:04to cause more mischief
11:05and to foster John Lowe
11:07as the second
11:08Ten Commandments killer.
11:10He won't do it.
11:11Why?
11:12This man has greatness in him.
11:13Once in a generation rage,
11:15a man only has a grip
11:16as tight as he does
11:17because he knows
11:18that if he lets go
11:19even slightly,
11:19he will hurl himself
11:21into the abyss.
11:23March's modus operandi
11:24has often likened him
11:25to real-life murderer
11:26H.H. Holmes.
11:28While the comparison
11:29is apt,
11:30Evan Peters
11:31completely makes this role
11:32his own
11:33with oodles of panache
11:34and showmanship.
11:35Pull the trigger
11:36and take her last breath.
11:39It's exhilarating.
11:41Number 10.
11:42Michael Langdon.
11:43Who the hell are you?
11:47My name is Michael Langdon
11:48and I'm here to do for you
11:50what your Supreme couldn't.
11:52A crossover between
11:53Murder House and Coven,
11:55arguably the show's
11:56best seasons,
11:57Apocalypse feels like
11:58the endgame
11:59of American Horror Story.
12:00Any season with that much hype
12:02needs a villain to match
12:03and thankfully
12:04this one has it
12:05in the form of
12:06Michael Langdon.
12:08Trust me.
12:09You have nothing
12:11to worry about.
12:13You see,
12:14I have a talent.
12:15Call it a kind of
12:16night vision of the soul.
12:18I can see into the dark places
12:20that people desperately
12:21try to keep hidden.
12:22The son of a human
12:23and a ghost,
12:24Michael is essentially
12:25the Antichrist
12:26and makes a big impression
12:28early on
12:29when he all but
12:29destroys the world.
12:31If there was a god,
12:32why would he allow
12:32the Armageddon?
12:34The concept of sin
12:35does seem a bit antiquated.
12:38Rules for keeping
12:39the chaos in bay?
12:41No need for rules anymore.
12:43Chaos has won.
12:44Actor Cody Fern
12:45was new on the AHS scene
12:47when he took on Michael.
12:48While that would be
12:49an intimidating role
12:50for anyone
12:51on their first outing,
12:52Fern nails
12:53the characterization,
12:54oozing confidence
12:55and malevolence
12:56in every scene.
12:58Number 9.
12:59Fiona Good.
13:00American Horror Story
13:01would be nothing
13:02without Jessica Lange.
13:03And while many
13:04of her characters
13:05ride the line
13:06between anti-hero
13:07and villain,
13:08we feel that none
13:09fits the bill
13:09better than Fiona Good.
13:11You are missing
13:12the point.
13:13Which is?
13:14The point is,
13:16in this whole
13:17wide, wicked world,
13:19the only thing
13:21you have to be afraid of
13:23is me.
13:26The show's first
13:27established supreme,
13:29Fiona is thus
13:30the most powerful
13:31witch of her generation.
13:32Whereas other supremes
13:33might use their status
13:34for good,
13:35Fiona is interested
13:36only in keeping
13:37her power
13:38and lording it
13:38over others.
13:40This makes her
13:40an incredibly layered
13:41character
13:42and one perfectly
13:43suiting Lange's strengths.
13:45This coven
13:46doesn't need
13:46a new supreme.
13:48It needs a new rug.
13:50While we also
13:52considered Fiona's
13:53sometimes rival
13:53Marie Laveau
13:54as another recurring
13:55source of antagonism,
13:56few witches
13:57make bad
13:58look so good
13:59quite like Fiona.
14:00Who's the best
14:01witch in town?
14:03Number 8.
14:04The Countess
14:04If we've learned
14:06anything here,
14:07it's that villains
14:07with the title
14:08are extremely
14:09terrifying entities
14:10who should never
14:11be messed with.
14:12The Countess,
14:13also known as Elizabeth,
14:14is the beautiful
14:15and seductive owner
14:16of the Hotel Cortez.
14:18The Countess
14:19is a vampire
14:19who uses her beauty,
14:21sexuality
14:21and seductive nature
14:23to lure people
14:24to her hotel
14:25so she can kill them
14:26and feast on their blood.
14:28He's yours.
14:29She even keeps
14:29various children
14:30inside the hotel
14:31to serve as a
14:32constant source of blood.
14:33And while she is
14:34a far more complex
14:35villain than most,
14:36she is still
14:37a cold,
14:38heartless vampire
14:39who will do
14:39anything for a meal.
14:41You are a revelation.
14:44Number 7.
14:45Kai Anderson
14:46It was only a matter
14:48of time before
14:48narrative television
14:49and explored
14:50the current
14:50political climate.
14:52Kai Anderson
14:52serves as a cult leader
14:53who will do anything
14:55to bring people
14:55to his cause,
14:57including murder.
14:58Due to his
14:59political ideologies,
15:00he attacks
15:01ethnic minorities
15:02and LGBTQ plus
15:04communities
15:04and uses them
15:05to fuel his
15:06political agenda
15:07to further incite
15:08hatred and oppression.
15:10Kai also showcases
15:11classic traits
15:12of psychopathy.
15:13He is externally
15:13charming,
15:14but he is also
15:15highly manipulative.
15:16He lacks
15:17any sort
15:18of empathy
15:18and he doesn't
15:19seem to have
15:20any semblance
15:20of a conscience.
15:22Are you going
15:23to waste
15:23my time?
15:25Do you understand
15:26how valuable
15:27my time is?
15:28How much it means
15:29that I'm here doing...
15:29The social commentary
15:30in Season 7
15:31may have been a little
15:32over the top
15:33for some,
15:33but Kai is
15:34delightfully evil.
15:37Just keep living
15:38your truth.
15:40And please...
15:40Don't let the
15:52boyish appearance
15:52fool you.
15:53Dandy Mott
15:54is an evil,
15:55evil man.
15:56While Dandy
15:56was raised in wealth,
15:58his mother was
15:58often absent,
15:59but ever enabling.
16:01So the riches
16:01resulted in Dandy
16:02becoming a spoiled
16:03man-child who
16:04would incite violence
16:05whenever he
16:06wouldn't get his way.
16:08He later allies
16:08himself with Twisty
16:09and becomes
16:10a serial killer.
16:12And once the freak
16:12show is sold to him,
16:14he massacres
16:15most of the troop
16:15in a fit of rage.
16:17What makes Dandy
16:18so scary
16:18isn't exactly
16:19the character,
16:20but the realism.
16:21Ghosts and vampires
16:22are good for campfires
16:23and scary movies,
16:24but it's the psychopaths
16:26who inspire true fear.
16:27My car just broke down.
16:29Would you mind
16:30if I came in
16:30and borrowed your telephone
16:31to call the auto club?
16:32I'm happy to pay you
16:33for the call.
16:34Nonsense.
16:35Come in.
16:36Number 5.
16:37Delphine Lalaurie.
16:38I invite all
16:40the eligible bachelors
16:41just to meet you
16:42and you.
16:44Grab your filthy legs.
16:46There's simply
16:46no going wrong
16:48with Kathy Bates.
16:49She gave us
16:49one of Stephen King's
16:50most memorable villains
16:51in Misery,
16:52and she's proven
16:53time and time again
16:54that she can be
16:55ridiculously scary
16:57given the right material.
16:58This is the right material,
17:00as the factual
17:01Delphine Lalaurie
17:02is about as evil
17:03as you can get.
17:04In the past,
17:05she was a serial killer
17:06who would dissect,
17:07torture,
17:08and kill her slaves
17:09and make a beauty bomb
17:10out of their insides.
17:11Even in the modern age,
17:13she retains her pride,
17:14vanity,
17:15and terrible racism,
17:16and she continues
17:17to prove
17:17that she has
17:18few to zero
17:19redeeming qualities
17:20whatsoever.
17:22Delphine
17:22is the embodiment
17:23of evil.
17:24How dare you
17:25open your foul mouth
17:27to me,
17:27Negress?
17:29Excuse me?
17:30I may be a maid,
17:32but there are limits
17:33to my servitude.
17:35Number 4,
17:36Tate Langdon.
17:42Like Dandy Mott,
17:43Tate Langdon
17:44is a villain
17:44very much based
17:45in real-world fears,
17:47and these fears
17:48remain just as relevant
17:49today as they did
17:50when the first season
17:51was released.
17:52Like most psychopaths,
17:54Tate is both
17:54intelligent and charming,
17:56but he also harbors
17:57an extremely dark past.
17:59Tate was once
18:00a mentally disturbed
18:01individual
18:01who clad himself
18:02in black
18:03and killed 15 people
18:04at his high school.
18:05Don't let Evan Peters'
18:06boyish good looks fool you.
18:08Tate is a psychotic man
18:09whom everyone,
18:11both adults
18:11and teenagers alike,
18:13can and should fear.
18:15number 3,
18:22Dr. Oliver Threadson,
18:24aka Bloody Face.
18:31Silly though his name may be,
18:33Bloody Face
18:34is downright terrifying.
18:36Bloody Face
18:37is an infamous serial killer,
18:38and while Kit
18:39is falsely believed
18:40to be Bloody Face,
18:42we later learn
18:42that it is in fact
18:43the hospital's psychiatrist,
18:45Oliver Threadson.
18:47Threadson skins
18:47and decapitates
18:48his victims,
18:49assaults Lana
18:50and admits to her
18:51that he did
18:52unspeakable things
18:53to Wendy's body.
18:54Bloody Face brings to mind
18:56numerous serial killers
18:57of the past,
18:58including Ted Bundy,
18:59who also decapitated
19:00his victims.
19:02Like Bundy,
19:03Bloody Face is a true monster
19:04in every sense of the word.
19:06It was then that I knew
19:07what I was missing.
19:10Number 2,
19:11Twisty the Clown.
19:16If there's one villain
19:17even non-American
19:18horror story fans recognize,
19:20it's Twisty.
19:21His macabre appearance
19:22has a way of immediately
19:24getting under your skin,
19:25as he's clad
19:26in a filthy clown outfit
19:27and an absolutely terrifying
19:29prosthetic mask,
19:30which gives him the appearance
19:31of a perpetual grin.
19:33Of course,
19:34his personality
19:35is just as horrifying
19:36as his outward appearance.
19:37Twisty is a serial killer
19:38who targets
19:39and kidnaps children,
19:40as he believes
19:41that he's saving them
19:42from their overbearing
19:43and unloving parents.
19:45His horrendous actions
19:46and petrifying appearance
19:47combine to make Twisty
19:49one of the shows
19:50and one of television's
19:51scariest villains.

20:10So far,
20:28we've seen
20:28various forms of evil.
20:30Sadistic physicians,
20:31creepy ghosts,
20:33seductive vampires
20:34and numerous psychopaths.
20:36And while those
20:36are all extremely unsettling,
20:38nothing compares
20:39to the devil itself.
20:41Sister Mary Eunice
20:42begins the series
20:43as a shy and meek nun
20:44before she is possessed
20:46by the devil,
20:47which results in her
20:48becoming both manipulative
20:49and evil.
20:51In this state,
20:52she commits blackmail
20:53and assault,
20:54offers the psychotic
20:55Oliver Threadson
20:55a cozy job,
20:57commits murder,
20:57and even plans
20:59to completely
20:59take over the Vatican
21:00with the Monsignor
21:01as Pope.
21:02It really doesn't get
21:03more evil than the devil,
21:05even when it's in the body
21:06of a meek
21:06and beautiful woman.
