00:00Trump blames Nixon?
00:02President Donald Trump recently blamed former President Richard Nixon
00:06for setting China on the path to becoming a global economic superpower,
00:10accusing the 37th president of having unleashed Beijing
00:13and allowing it to exploit the U.S. for decades.
00:16The remarks came during an interview on Sunday Morning Futures
00:19with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo,
00:22during which Trump also defended his plan to impose steep tariffs
00:26on Chinese imports starting November 1st.
00:28Trump told Bartiromo during the interview,
00:31China has ripped us off from day one,
00:33and you know, Richard Nixon, he allowed this to happen.
00:36You know, he was the one who opened China.
00:38I said, is that good or bad?
00:40You tell me, he unleashed it.
00:42And we have a very strong adversary, and they only respect strength.
00:47Nixon's visit to Beijing in February 1972
00:49marked a pivotal moment in Cold War history,
00:53re-establishing diplomatic communication between the U.S. and China
00:56after two decades of estrangement.
00:59It led to the Shanghai Communicate,
01:01and under President Jimmy Carter in 1979,
01:04full normalization, integrating China into the global economy
01:08that Trump now calls a costly mistake for America.
01:12Trump's comments came as the president renewed his threat
01:15to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese goods beginning November 1st.
01:19He linked the move to China's new export restrictions on rare earth minerals,
01:24a critical component in technology manufacturing.
01:27The proposed measure would raise total tariffs on Chinese imports
01:30to roughly 157%, according to Bartiromo.
01:34Asked whether such tariffs were sustainable,
01:36Trump replied,
01:36No, it's not sustainable,
01:38but that's what the number is.
01:40It's probably not.
01:41You know, it could stand.
01:43But they forced me to do that.
