00:00Trump calls convicted fraudster a great hero while commuting prison sentence.
00:06President Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence of former Representative George Santos,
00:11calling the disgraced lawmaker a great hero and ordering his immediate release.
00:16George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and by all accounts
00:20has been horribly mistreated, Trump posted on Truth Social.
00:25Therefore, I just signed a commutation, releasing George Santos from prison immediately.
00:30Good luck, George. Have a great life.
00:33While describing the 37-year-old as rogue, he added that Santos was also a great hero.
00:39A senior White House official told NBC News the president heard from so many people
00:44and in recent days he decided it was the right decision.
00:47Added the official, it's his call and he made it.
00:50In 2023, federal authorities arrested Santos on charges including wire fraud, money laundering
00:56and theft.
00:58He pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, receiving an 87-month prison
01:03sentence along with a fine.
01:05He started his prison term in New Jersey in July.
01:08Santos won a congressional seat in 2022, flipping a Democratic district in Long Island.
01:13Before the election, the North Shore leader, a small Long Island outlet, highlighted major
01:18gaps in his resume and personal history.
01:21National scrutiny followed after the New York Times revealed more inconsistencies in his
01:25record prior to his time in office.
01:28In December 2023, the House voted to remove Santos from office after a House Ethics Committee
01:33investigation uncovered substantial evidence that he had used campaign funds for personal
01:38expenses, including Botox, OnlyFans subscriptions and other luxury items.
01:43Santos' lawyer told NBC News that his client is overjoyed and appreciative of Trump for
01:49his compassion in seeing the suffering Mr. Santos endured through the prosecution, adding
01:55that the sentence had been draconian.
