00:00Several motorists didn't waste a chance to ensure safety of their vehicles.
00:04This after several malls announced free overnight parking to motorists,
00:09not only as parking spaces but also as temporary shelters.
00:13Denise Osorio has more.
00:16Many Filipinos continue to seek safe shelter,
00:20not only for their families but also for their vehicles,
00:23as Typhoon 1 continued to batter parts of the country with strong winds and heavy rainfall.
00:28One of the most popular destinations for motorists was the network of shopping centers
00:33that offered free overnight parking, with car parks reaching full capacity,
00:38including a particular prominent large shopping mall by Manila Bay.
00:42Among those taking advantage of the free parking is Aya,
00:45who brought her family's vehicles here to ensure it remained safe
00:48as the storm continued to sweep through Metro Manila.
00:52Last year, we were still here in Valenzuela.
00:55That experience prompted her family to act early this time,
01:05securing a parking space before the slots were completely filled out.
01:09Aya says she supports initiatives such as this one,
01:12in which the private sector, in coordination with government authorities,
01:16helps in ensuring public safety during extreme weather.
01:19Mall management stated that since 8th November,
01:28vehicles have arrived steadily to avail themselves of the free overnight parking being offered in the interim.
01:34For this Typhoon 1, our parking levels reach at 80% and it's around 1,000 cars.
01:40Despite the continuing rains, the mall remains open to the public,
01:43maintaining regular operations, particularly fast food chains and supermarkets,
01:49which are continuing to serve residents who may be seeking food or supplies amid the storm.
01:54What's good here, no, we really study the movement of the Typhoon.
02:00So our head office guides us.
02:02So anywhere in the Philippines, basta part siya ng radius noong Typhoon,
02:08mall surrounding that radius will offer overnight parking.
02:11So anywhere kang nagtatravel, you're covered and you're safe.
02:15Previously, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority or MMDA announced
02:20its coordination with private mall operators to provide safe locations for the public during emergencies.
02:26Across Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon,
02:29several major shopping centers had offered free overnight parking
02:32and extended automobile refuge from 8th to 10th November.
02:37Mall and parking operators are reminding the public to check individual guidelines
02:41before leaving and collecting their vehicles
02:43as not all parking providers remain cost-free until 11.59 this evening.
