00:00We are at the veterinary hospital here at the San Diego Zoo and today we are doing a quarantine exam on our new clouded leopard.
00:10We use anesthetic drugs to basically anesthetize them so that they are completely still so it is safe for us as the humans working on her and also less stressful for her and allows us to do everything that we need to do.
00:21The quarantine exam is part of our routine preventative health program at the zoo.
00:31We want to make sure that she is healthy to enter the collection and that we don't have any sort of underlying health issues that we need to be aware of for the rest of her life.
00:44So we do blood work, we do a full blood count, a chemistry panel, we do some other testing as well.
00:51We take x-rays of her chest and also her abdomen.
00:58We also did an abdominal ultrasound today and took a urine sample.
01:06So she has very sharp nails so we were hoping to do a nail trim on her today which we did.
01:11And we also wanted to make sure that there wasn't anything abnormal with her paws.
01:15So just like every other part of her body we look at it very carefully.
01:21And we do x-rays because there's a lot of things inside the body that we can't see with her eyes.
01:25So one of the best tools that we have in veterinary medicine are x-rays to look at bone structures, to look at organs inside, so heart and lung tissue.
01:33Something that we wouldn't be able to appreciate just by listening or looking with her eyes.
01:37This new clouded leopard is from the Nashville Zoo and she's going to be going to Backstage Pass after she finishes her quarantine time.
01:46She'll be one of the guest ambassador animals so she'll participate in Backstage Pass tours, shows and also guest interactions.
