00:00Welcome to Ireland's fittest family. Over eight grueling weeks our families will go
00:08head-to-head in a series of events designed to push them to their limits.
00:13From the tough terrain of an army training camp, through the sticky swamps of hell and back,
00:19and the deep icy waters of Draw de Porte. It will all come down to these ramps in our grand final
00:25in spectacular Avondale in County Wicklow, where one family will rise to the top
00:30and grab that 15,000 euro cash prize and the title of Ireland's fittest family 2025.
00:47Welcome to Ireland's fittest family. We're back at our base camp in Gormanstown County Meath
00:52and it's the second of our heats in this year's competition.
00:57Last week, OG coach and three-time winner Anna Geary and newbie coach Michael Dower McCauley
01:03kicked off this year's competition as they went head-to-head in our first heat.
01:07There you go. Best of luck.
01:09After three nail-biting events and some intense rivalry, it was Michael Dower who got his two families through,
01:15leaving Anna with just one family left in the competition.
01:19Michael Dower, what a way to kick it off. Two family suits the quarter-finals.
01:22Two for two. Absolutely buzzing.
01:24This week, it's the turn of former Ireland teammates and Munster Ulster rivals
01:28Doneco Callaghan and Andrew Trimble.
01:31In our final heat next week, it's fittest family veteran Davy Fitzgerald
01:35versus Paralympic swimming champion Ellen Keane.
01:38Andrew has 70 caps for Ireland. I've 94, you know.
01:46We have Andrew Trimble in as well this year. Like, what an athlete. What a rugby player. Incredible.
01:51Ultimately, whenever you get out there in the heat of the battle, I know I'm going to get fired up, excited and flustered.
01:56Doneco is a massive character in Ireland for the family. You know, he's a real funny guy.
02:00Andrew coming in now though might challenge him with that title because he's also a funny guy. He loves to mess.
02:05My only experience of coaching, I suppose, is coaching my 10 year old and his mini rugby team.
02:09And my coaching style with that would be generally to be ignored.
02:14Each coach has two families in tonight's competition.
02:17Doneco's families are the Linehan's from Cork and the Hickey's from Dublin.
02:22Andrew's families are the Hilliard's from Kildare and the McKenna's from Monaghan.
02:26Dunners! Andrew Trimble!
02:33Hi!
02:34You're very welcome along!
02:35Yeah, great to be here.
02:36So you guys obviously go way back. You used to be teammates.
02:38Best friends.
02:39You're going to show Andrew the ropes, you know.
02:41Yeah, I know you're trying to build this up as like enemies and we are when we played against each other, but we're kind of frenemies.
02:48Frenemies are worse than enemies, Dunners.
02:49I didn't know that.
02:50Don't let her get in your head. That's not true.
02:52It is your first time on Ireland's Freness Family. How are you feeling?
02:55I'm good. I'm good. Nice to meet the families.
02:57I got this look from the McKenna's. They're from Monaghan.
02:59And I got this look that I recognise I've seen before.
03:01And it's a look that says, why can't you be Tommy Bo?
03:08Tonight, all families will compete in two events, Box to the Top and in Bits.
03:13Box to the Top will have two heats, both with one family from each coach going head to head.
03:18The losing families will be given a 20-second time penalty for the second event.
03:23The two families with the best times in in bits will go straight through to the quarter-finals.
03:28The slowest families will battle it out in our army eliminator for their remaining place in the quarter-finals.
03:36First up, it's Andrew's family, the McKenna's from County Monaghan.
03:40We entered Ireland's Freness Family because we think we have a chance in winning.
03:43The secret weapon was definitely Colin. She's late, she's fast.
03:47She'd be nimble.
03:48If he were looking for me, he'd never find me in the house, no.
03:50It's the last place he'd go looking for me.
03:53I'd much prefer to be outside, let him be on my bicycle, out hiking a mountain, out for a walk, a run.
03:59Caelan, he'd be very into the sheep and the farming side of it.
04:02He, at a young age, he took into sheep farming and he played football.
04:06And same as all of us, handball and rugby.
04:09Caelan is a very, very relaxed person.
04:11It's very, very hard to get a raise out of Caelan.
04:13But Caelan just goes with the flow.
04:15He'll not steal the attention or anything.
04:17He'll just, whatever's happening, he'll float with it.
04:20I think we can definitely win Ireland's Freness Family.
04:22That's why we've entered.
04:24Next up, it's Jonica's Linehans from County Cork.
04:27We're a fairly competitive family when it comes to all games out in the garden, board games inside.
04:33We always like beating each other.
04:35Dad's a big golfer.
04:36He's golfing all of his life.
04:37He'd be fairly fit too.
04:38He goes for his runs there a couple of times a week.
04:41Goes to the gym as well, he'd be fairly active.
04:43For touching up on 60, he's not doing too bad.
04:46Rory is generally an all-rounder.
04:48He's very good at everything.
04:49He has an older brother who he's always trying to out-achieve.
04:54There's great rivalry between them.
04:56So whatever Sean does, Rory will try and do better.
05:00Ava's probably the fittest.
05:01She does a lot of long running and cardio.
05:04So hopefully that could come in handy.
05:06She's very good at the plank stuff like that.
05:08Balance and flexibility.
05:10If there's anything to do with that, she'll be very strong.
05:13Sean's very strong.
05:14He likes going to the gym.
05:15And he started MMA recently.
05:17Sean would definitely be the strongest.
05:19But in terms of speed, I'd say Rory would be up there.
05:23We've been training really hard.
05:24We've been trying to do as much running as we can.
05:27And going to the gym and even swimming just in case anything comes our way.
05:33Sandbags, sweat and seriously steep hills.
05:36Oh, and a box.
05:37Welcome to Box to the Top.
05:39Tonight, members of the Irish Defence Forces will demonstrate this test of strength, strategy and stamina.
05:46One person from each family starts the race standing on an army kit box in the sea.
05:51On the sound of the horn, they must jump off the box, pick it up and run with it to their remaining family members.
05:58With the family are four 15kg sandbags.
06:01Between them, they must carry the sandbags and the box through the rest of the course.
06:05Next, it's a 200m run broken up by crawls through two army camo nets.
06:10Once through them, it's a run up a hill and onto a platform.
06:13The sandbags have to be placed inside the box and the lid closed.
06:16When all the family members are on the platform, they go down a ladder and up a wall.
06:21Finally, it's a run up a steep bank.
06:23When all four family members are standing at the top of the bank, they win the race.
06:27The losing family will carry a 20 second time penalty into the next event.
06:38We have a strategy in place.
06:39We're going to stick all the sandbags in the box, give it to Caelan and Cormac and let them run.
06:45And then let the girls get ahead and create a bit of a tunnel in the net.
06:49It's going to be Cormac standing out in the box to start the event.
06:52He'd be probably a bit faster than me.
06:55We were up again a good family there. It looked tough, so try our best.
06:5920 seconds actually might not be that big a deal.
07:01You said that to Joesma.
07:04Nerves aren't too bad at the minute, but at the start of the race, I'd say they'll be going.
07:0990.
07:10I'm a bit nervous about the first race.
07:12I think the cargo nets are going to be harder than people think.
07:15The teams we're up against do seem very good, but at the same time,
07:18we're very confident in ourselves, so hopefully we can win the first event anyway.
07:21I think it's about speed and agility, really.
07:24So I would say probably Eva.
07:26She would be the fastest and I think she'd fly through those nets.
07:30Might have been a bit of trouble here, but anyway.
07:33Starting in red, it's Cormac McKenna and in yellow, Sean Linehan.
07:38We are ready to go for our first race of the day on Gormanston Beach.
07:413, 2, 1.
07:45Box to the top begins.
07:47Paula Donovan gets our competitors underway.
07:50Two 19-year-olds here starting this race.
07:53And they are right beside each other.
07:57And the terrain gets a little bit trickier from here.
08:01That box is tricky to handle.
08:03So Cormac McKenna in red is up to the rest of his family.
08:07And the McKennas from Monaghan have opened up a little bit of a lead.
08:10The first of these 100-meter sprints.
08:12Well done.
08:13Well done, Eva.
08:14It's a lovely day in County Me.
08:16So this is Colleen McKenna out in front for her family.
08:19And Eva Linehan is pushing hard too.
08:22What is interesting is the McKennas have put the sandbags into the box.
08:25The Linehans are carrying them.
08:28So this is the camo net crawl.
08:30So Eva Linehan through that already and she's gone.
08:36There's a little bit of assistance for the McKennas.
08:38Now there are two of those nets as you can see.
08:40And the lads have got to get the box through with them.
08:42This is not easy at all.
08:45So there's good teamwork from the McKenna family in red.
08:48And here's the rest of the sandbags for the Linehans.
08:52That army kit box is empty for the Linehan family.
08:56What are you doing, Sean? Sean, get out!
08:59As always, the role of the coaches here is very important.
09:02Calm, clear instructions.
09:04So the McKennas have opened up a nice lead, haven't they?
09:07Take your time, guys. Take your time. We've got the lead.
09:10So Andrew keeping them calm.
09:13That's a bit confused from the Linehans.
09:15The sandbags are an issue.
09:17And the strategy isn't working, carrying those bags.
09:20The McKennas have seen the difference.
09:21They've put the bags inside that box.
09:24And they have a big lead.
09:25But the Linehans are closing or trying to.
09:28So the McKennas trying to get up to the top of this wall.
09:34And then there's a steep bank in front of them.
09:36They are in pole position here.
09:38They've been very fast and they've made this look straightforward.
09:41And it certainly isn't.
09:42What about the performance of mum Sharon McKenna?
09:44She's first up to the top.
09:46Very, very impressive performance.
09:48And it's a victory for the McKennas.
09:50They win.
09:51The Linehan family from Cork didn't get that right at all.
09:54They'll carry a 20-second time penalty into the next event.
09:57Go on.
09:58It was just a great close.
09:59It was very exciting.
10:00It was fun.
10:01There are wee powerhouses, the three of them.
10:03So they are.
10:04We stuck to the plan and it ended up working for us very well.
10:06Bring on the time press.
10:07Feeling good, yeah.
10:08Well, Andrew, congratulations.
10:10You guys won the first race.
10:12It has to feel good.
10:13I'm feeling great at the minute.
10:14I think we're probably feeling a little bit bulletproof.
10:16The two lads got off and just so strong on the carry.
10:20And then the two girls were technically getting the net up.
10:23A lot of things fell into place.
10:24So they did brilliantly.
10:26Jonica, as you well know, this is only round one.
10:30Yeah.
10:31And a lot can change.
10:32Of course.
10:33But I think they got it so right.
10:35To be fair, it was a brilliant performance.
10:36Credit where credit is due.
10:38At the end of the day, they were just a better family.
10:40It was all over really quick.
10:41I think I was expecting a longer race.
10:43And then all of a sudden we heard their falcon.
10:45There is a 20-second time penalty going into the next defense.
10:47You do have to work a lot harder.
10:49How are you feeling about that?
10:50That 20-second penalty.
10:51Yeah, 20 seconds.
10:53Probably a long way to come back from.
10:55His smugness is frightening.
10:56Honestly, stranger things have happened on Fitna's family.
10:59Sorry for being so cocky.
11:01Yeah, look, you know, it could be the other way next time around.
11:04So watch out, Andrew. We're coming to get you.
11:06The next race is about to start.
11:08Now, can Andrew get another family over the line first?
11:12Or will Donegan make a spectacular second half comeback?
11:16Andrew's second family are the Hillyards from County Kildare.
11:20My dad decided to apply for the show.
11:22He's been talking about it for years.
11:24As long as I've been watching the show, I dream to be actually taking part.
11:27Ellen is, I'd say she's like the strongest of us all now.
11:30But I think that she would never, like, say that herself.
11:33Just seeing how she kind of pushes herself is, for me, like, super inspirational.
11:38The big reason as to why myself and the girls are willing to take part in the show is because of the influence that my mom and dad have had on us both.
11:46In particular, my dad, because he's always been active.
11:49Me, Alana and Julia are all part of the same gym and we go a couple times a week.
11:54We're all kind of along the same kind of strength levels then as well.
11:57I think we will work really well together as a team.
12:00I mean, we're used to training together in the gym and certain competitions that take part there.
12:04We're often paired up together.
12:05So I do think that that will definitely, like, help within the competition itself.
12:09I think people might underestimate that team, you know, and they might think, oh, it's just all girls.
12:14Well, I think we might surprise a few people.
12:16We won't fear anybody.
12:17We'll be giving them everything we can.
12:19Donegan's next family are the Hickeys from County Dublin.
12:22To be honest, I couldn't believe it, but really excited to give it a go.
12:25And it's really nice to do something together as a family life.
12:28Conor, without a doubt, definitely he'll be our secret weapon.
12:31He's got youth on his side.
12:32He's also extremely competitive as well, very fast.
12:35Our biggest strength is, like, our fitness.
12:37We're all, like, able to, like, keep up with each other and help each other, so.
12:40Cindy will be the team leader.
12:42She's super competitive, a good leader, is a strong runner.
12:46We all do park run.
12:47Jodie kind of shows up, says he does no training and absolutely hair off these amazing times.
12:52But it's very competitive.
12:54Ruby is my younger sister.
12:56We go to the gym together.
12:57We run together.
12:58It'll be amazing to win something together as a family.
13:01We've got to believe to achieve, and I definitely think we all have the determination to win.
13:05So, yeah.
13:06Go Hickeys! Woohoo!
13:07Yay!
13:08The Hilliards are going to be great.
13:15Good group.
13:16Really connected with the families and looking forward to seeing what we can do out there.
13:19To have Andrew as a coach is just incredible for us as a family.
13:23We've talked tactics there, so we have a plan.
13:25So.
13:26The Nets particularly, I think, will be a challenge with the box and all the gear with it.
13:31Ready for box to the top in gold.
13:33It's Mel Hilliard.
13:34And in white, Jodie Hickey.
13:36Three.
13:37Two.
13:38One.
13:39It's an all-Leinster battle between Dublin and Kildare.
13:42The Hickeys from Dublin.
13:43The Hilliards from Kildare.
13:45And there's an early lead for Jodie Hickey.
13:47Well, he's gone off very, very quickly.
13:49That's an impressive start.
13:50I'm putting pressure on Mel Hilliard already.
13:53Well done.
13:54Well done.
13:55Well done.
13:56Great work.
13:57So, the box is awkward.
13:58It's not particularly heavy.
14:00So, Connor in white for the Hickey family has gone off very quickly on that sprint.
14:04He's not bothering with the sandbags.
14:06Each of them weigh 15 kilograms.
14:08Here come the Hilliards, so they're all together.
14:11And they're off and running.
14:14So, Connor for the Hickey family is up to the camo net.
14:20And there's a nice steady pace for Mel and Alana Hilliard carrying that box.
14:25So, Connor is still pushing forward.
14:30But here come the Hilliards.
14:33Not too proud behind under the watchful eye of Andrew Trimble.
14:37It's really difficult to move the bags and that box underneath the nets.
14:47And they're sort of stuck at the moment, aren't they?
14:49And, well, the Hickey family lost a little bit of time there.
14:53But now they're free of the first cargo net and up to the second one.
14:58So, Connor has gone back to help the rest of his family.
15:01Yeah, well done.
15:02Well done, Connor, start bringing the bags.
15:04And here come the Hilliards.
15:05Let's go.
15:06Big charge, guys.
15:07We're down here.
15:08Let's get moving.
15:09Let's go.
15:10Let's go.
15:11Let's go.
15:12Let's go.
15:13Let's go.
15:14Let's go.
15:15Let's go.
15:16Let's go.
15:17Let's go.
15:18Let's go.
15:19Let's go.
15:20Let's go.
15:21Let's go.
15:22Let's go.
15:23Let's go.
15:24Let's go.
15:25Let's go.
15:26And then Hilliards gets to the top of that platform first, dumps the two sandbags,
15:30and he's gone back to help the rest of his family.
15:32The Hilliards, though, they're bunched up.
15:35Will that be an advantage for them?
15:37They have to put those sandbags inside the kit box and close the lid,
15:42and then they can move away from here and down the ladder.
15:44Let's go.
15:46That's done.
15:47This is very tight, isn't it?
15:48A marginal lead for the Hilliard family.
15:51The ladder is tricky to get down.
15:53The Hickey family have closed up on them, haven't they?
15:55they and they are neck and neck they're right beside each other who's got the strength at the
16:00end of a grueling event to get to the top of that very steep hill the wall is not straightforward
16:06teamwork absolutely important the hickey family there's two going up towards the top of that hill
16:11but the hilliards are all together all four of them who's it gonna be this is really really tight
16:17between these two families and it's the hilliards who get up there all four of them there they win
16:22the hickey family now have a 20 second time penalty into the next event
16:29oh it's all going so well for you it is yeah
16:36hilliards we need to say congratulations to you well john that was a phenomenal race how are you
16:41guys feeling going in now i think we're feeling pretty good um yeah we've got a bit of a spring
16:45in our stuff it's a huge advantage can't lie about that i think it's a bit of a confidence booster too
16:51i think we can all agree that the superstar of that race was without a doubt connor you were
16:56phenomenal very proud of him he did super yeah he was kind of the most composed of us
17:03it was panic and run panic and run for the rest of us but he was very calm and composed connor was
17:08absolutely brilliant he took off like a hair at the beginning and then was still came back got the
17:13two bags and was able to get up the hill so yeah massively proud of connor he's done great so far
17:16donica we're on a 20 second time penalty going into the next event but i feel like there's a fire in
17:22the belly of the hickeys here now yeah absolutely i think you've nailed it of course it's disappointing
17:27but i think we made an awful lot of mistakes so we kind of look at our own performance the 20 seconds
17:31is going to make us like definitely fight harder for the next event we kind of need to just forget about
17:35it this morning and think about the next event very best of luck later on i'll see you then all right
17:48get up get up
18:10talk to me about this beautiful creation that you've got yeah i've been at it now for about four hours i
18:15just wanted to take up something new a new hobby but it's quite time consuming but it's all worth
18:20it when you see look at that oh that's so cool i think there's about 30 years in this now reading
18:26truly absolutely trimber just arrived oh wow oh hi andrew i'll just be with you in uh oh my god yes
18:35i totally did it um did you just whip this up oh five minutes where so five minutes yeah just
18:41threw it together i wanted to create the sand manifestation of donica's rugby career okay missing
18:47tackles and uh my rugby career uh line breaks in general x factor oh wow just i mean in between
18:54everything that we've got going on today um yeah
18:57didn't get hurt his feelings no i mean he did a great job too yeah just different
19:21welcome back to ireland's fittest family
19:23now before the break the mckenna's and the hilliards both managed to get the box to the top
19:27first which means going into this next event the hickeys and the linehans both have a time penalty
19:33but as we know on this show anything can happen i always thought the families who did jigsaws together
19:39were a little bit weird but this is actually great crack everyone has to complete a leg of the challenge
19:44grab a piece of the jigsaw and then put it back together because right now it's in bits just like
19:49our families are going to be at the end of this this is in bits in bits is a brand new event where
19:57strategy is key each person must complete a different task in this square of the army camp's
20:02training trenches before pulling a piece of a fittest family jigsaw puzzle to the center
20:07first we've a crawl under two camo nets the next leg involves jumping over four straw bales
20:13then it's a long busting run to collect sandbags from two barrels and the final person has to drag
20:21a tire down the length of the trench the clock stops when all four family members are standing
20:26on their piece of the completed puzzle this event will definitely have everyone in bits first up for
20:34this new time trial are dunnika and the hickeys they lost their first event so they go into this with a
20:4020 second time penalty donors hickeys here we go we're not messing around now are we no we're not
20:49we messed around too much this morning now we're going to try to put that all right this is good
20:53course to make the 20 seconds back it's four legs essentially five second a person i think it's well
20:59possible to pick up five seconds each we're feeling good yeah yeah yeah we're a bit nervous but that's not
21:04a bad thing laura you need the nerves you do you do trimble's here three minutes and he's giving it
21:09all that you know what i mean i cannot have two families in the eliminator me competing against
21:15myself will be a nightmare i need to drag him into a fight in fact i'm going for it on the start line
21:22for the hickey family from dublin are ruby jody connor and cindy connor same again boy you're brilliant yeah
21:31three two one so first to go for the hickey family it's cindy running the first leg and taking on the
21:42responsibility of that and cindy has to deal with two camo nets which are down inside that trench
21:52remember they are carrying a 20 second time penalty from the first event on the exact same way attack it
21:58we'll see can they make that up over the course of in bits so cindy has been quick enough through
22:05there powerful running style she's got out of the trench and has to grab the piece of the jigsaw
22:12puzzle and drag it back down the course ruby's waiting ruby's waiting certainly looks lively doesn't
22:18remember rope to the corner take it off or to the corner so the piece of the puzzle has to be placed
22:23in the frame and then ruby is tagged in let's go ruby away away away and off ruby goes down into the
22:33trench and this is the sandbag carry so you'll see she has to get out of the trench grab the sandbag
22:40on the top of the barrel and jump back down and get in flings the bag in and she's back moving
22:51again open out one more sandbag to collect that's done goes around the barrel 30 seconds of work
22:59work into the trench get them up they're 15 kilograms each those sandbags get out get out get out just
23:07so ruby has placed those on the barrel and she's out of the trench and here's the second piece of
23:13the puzzle push push push and ruby is back to the rest of her family roll to the edge roll to the edge
23:19now and tag him get on and pull here we go it's placed in and third to go is connor
23:24and connor has to jump over four straw bales which are in the trench i think those bales may
23:33well be taller than connor but he's got past the first one and now the second it's a good technique
23:40from it this is quick nicely done and he's up to the fourth one past the fourth one
23:49back up all your brilliant out of the trench and that's the third piece of the puzzle
23:59pushing hard now to get back to the rest of his family they've just one to go
24:03the hippie family from dublin didn't have a particularly long journey to get down to
24:09gormansson and county meath this is jody and jody when he gets into the trench will
24:13have to drag this tire it's not particularly heavy it's not heavy at all it's just awkward
24:22and it's slowing him down a bit but he's really pushing those legs getting down towards the end
24:28of the trench as you can see the rope wrapped around his chest out he goes and this is the final
24:33piece of the puzzle the hippie family will set the time for the rest to try and beat but remember
24:39whatever they finish on we're going to add 20 seconds onto it under the rushful eye of dunnake
24:45jody is back to the rest of his family every second counts they're all standing on top of the
24:52jigsaw the clock stops at 5.09 but with the 20 second time kennedy it's 5.29 we'll see how good that is
25:01hey champ brilliant it was definitely a better performance than this morning in that we
25:05didn't get stuck in any of our bits and pieces we're all very proud of what we did i think we all
25:11gave it our all so jigsaw pieces are not light not after you've ran you've jumped you've carried
25:16sandbags to drag a jigsaw piece along it's definitely not easy overall i i don't think we could have given
25:23it any more my concern is that the time will cost us and the error from the first event will cost us
25:29deeply next up for in bits are andrew and the mckenna's can they repeat their blistering first
25:35round performance time to find out the calm before the storm smiles on faces we've got members
25:42remember we got 20 seconds buffer so we don't need to go 100 miles an hour if we go as hard as we can
25:47here and do our best and leave all out the field now we plan not to have to be eliminated i think andrew
25:53deserves to be a wee bit smug you know because um obviously as both his teams did well this morning
25:58you know seeing danica soul searching on his phone to his mom or his wife you know do you still love me
26:05that would be perfect that would be a real success for me today lining up for the mckenna's we have
26:11cormac kaylon colleen and sharon three two one seconds to go in bits are the mckenna's from
26:24monaghan for andrew trimble and first up it's mum sharon a high rock specialist she was very
26:30impressive in the first event this morning she's got the camo nets to start that one arm right ahead
26:34just trying to clear that clear that space nice well done watch your head nice and calm instruction
26:40from andrew sharon great stuff sharon was in blistering form this morning good job in event one
26:50and it's a good solid start for the mckenna family 5 29 is the time they have to beat and
26:57they're just through a minute on the first leg of this in bits relay challenge so the first piece
27:05of the puzzle is back and sharon tags her daughter colleen and her task will be to carry these sandbags
27:16collect them off the barrels carry them from one end of the trench to the other big into boxing and the
27:23ga very strong competitor and there's sandbag number one for colleen mckenna see him again
27:33she can see where the second soundbag is there it is let's go and it's been collected around the
27:39barrel and then it's a sprint with both of them down to the bottom of the trench this feels quick
27:47there's the second piece of the jigsaw let's go hard collie let's go all the way home
27:51colleen mckenna drives the legs back down to the rest of her family two and a half minutes done
27:585 29 is what they've got to try and better
28:02around the right way that's done third in is 19 year old cormac and he is sprinting to that trench
28:10he's got to jump over these bales
28:11and look at that great technique brilliant that was a brilliant bit of skill and technique from
28:19cormac mckenna and if anything he's getting faster jumping over poses if they're not there
28:24right let's go hard from cormac mckenna piece number three there's no let up in the pace at all
28:31hard go hard all the way this is quick and he is going hard so kaylon mckenna will finish this out
28:38three and a half minutes oh there's a little bit of a mistake there that's cost them a second or two
28:43but not fatal the tire pull and kaylon's quick as well he's 21 and they have smashed this
28:52from the first leg with sharon mckenna this felt fast we got an exact time very shortly
28:58kaylon out of the trench the final piece of the puzzle has been dragged along the ground and this
29:08i've laid down a marker this is a really quick time very impressive but no time penalty to carry into
29:14this so it's four minutes and 22 seconds our new leaders the mckenna's 4 22 nicely done
29:23it looked quick it looked like that's going to be a time that's um i don't think anybody's going to
29:27beat that mckenna's i would say you feel quite good about that but on a scale of one to ten how tough
29:33was it actually it wasn't really out the children were very very strong so they were andrew i'd say
29:40you have to be so proud of that it was unreal yeah and then someone as we finished someone said i'd say
29:45that was faster than the army was it the mckenna family faster than the army next up for in bits are
29:53dunnicka and the linehans they lost their first event so they go into this with a 20 second time
29:58penalty linehan family isn't it mad to think you could have been out for a lovely round of golf today
30:03but instead you're in the hardest course in the army camp look our aim is to win this event right
30:08and get home early to car so we're very very confident going into it typical ireland's fittest family we
30:16take something so wholesome like a jigsaw and we make it absolutely torturous it's going to be tough
30:23ready to go for the linehan family are sean diarmouth ava and rory three two one
30:33paula donovan gets them underway and first to go is 18 year old ava great job fast start from what
30:40remember the linehans are carrying a 20 second time penalty into in bits they are third of our
30:46four families to go excellent first of the cargo next she's through there impressive great encouragement
30:53from the rest of her family same again though keep low high back high back brilliant outstanding
30:59well done well done offering great encouragement to ava linehan so she's out of that trench 20 seconds
31:07to work puzzle piece number one been dragged back down the course keep in it this is a brilliant
31:16pumping the legs a little bit of a stumble and she's fallen she's fallen ava linehan but she's okay
31:22and the rest of her family helped her out there here goes sean quick start from sean very fast
31:30so he's got the sandbags which are on the two barrels ahead of them there's sandbag number one
31:39a little bit of a slip the conditions underfoot are perfect it's a lovely dry day but
31:46can be challenging at times that's the second bag he goes round the barrel collects the other bag
31:52bit of a stumble again from sean linehan but not fatal bags delivered to the top of the barrel two minutes
31:58they've got a beast for the quickest time to mckenna's 4 22. the hit is back on 5 29. whatever the
32:05lenehan's get here we're going to stick another 20 seconds onto it after the first event
32:15third to go now is 16 year old rory lenehan a bit of a stumble from him he's got to jump over at the
32:24straw bale looks like fun that's good technique spinning through them and again repeating the
32:30dose great work rory so rory is fast here he's made up some time and we've got to drag the puzzle piece
32:38behind him he got so invested in what he was doing he forgot about maybe the most important part
32:44so this is a good time heading for three and a half minutes and last to go is dad dierman he's a high
32:53rocks fan he's a big golfer and he's got to drag this tire down that trench it's certainly not as heavy
33:00as the golf bag he'd be used to carrying around the course good solid pace the rope wrapped over his left
33:08shoulder and he's got rid of the tire he's going quick as well another stumble the lenehans have
33:14had trouble just keeping their feet and now the final key is back they're not going to be the
33:20quickest as long as there's no mistakes here they will be the second fastest out of the three
33:25so they just have to fit the final piece of the jigsaw in there that cost them a couple of seconds it
33:29all has to be pressed into position 4 42 with the 20 second time penalty it's 5 0 2 they are not safe yet
33:35out standing hey hey outstanding every one of you brilliant brilliant brilliant honestly so good
33:44everyone did their leg really well and yeah i'm just delighted with everyone
33:49they've uh my father or they all put in a serious shift so i couldn't have asked for more from them
33:54we said it right around we've done the best we can it was a very poor performance this morning
33:58there was a lot of constructive criticism from our coach stanica
34:01uh so i think we've bounced back whatever about doing really well it's built confidence again so
34:07the lenehans are back we're confident and it's great last up for in bits are andrew's hilliard family
34:14with no time penalty hanging over their heads they're in a strong position for the hilliards this event
34:20should suit them there's a lot of running well talking about the 20 seconds that is a huge advantage as
34:27far as i'm concerned the only thing can trip us up here is mistakes as long as we keep the lid on
34:31it i think we're in good shape i think so let's go well folks ready to go for the hilliards it's dad mel
34:39daughters ellen elana and julia
34:45three two one the hilliards from county kildare last to go and on the first leg it's elana
34:52good stuff alana she is a primary school teacher she's got the camo net crawl
35:00for the hilliard family to avoid the eliminator they need to beast the lenehan's time of five
35:05minutes and two seconds so that's the target that they have
35:12so good solid start from alana under the first camo net
35:16andrew trimble right beside her and she's out of the trench there's jigsaw piece number one
35:30so a little bit of a stumble there from alana you may think it's easy to pull something like
35:35that along behind you sometimes it can trip you up literally second in it's julia
35:39she's got the sandbags running is one of her big passions and she's pumping those arms and legs
35:46she's down to the trench and in she goes
35:53girls in this family all very into volleyball
35:59sandbag number one
36:00so julia has got the two bags and just has to deliver them down to the barrel at the bottom of
36:13the trench and they'll be very nearly halfway there empty the tank home julia let's go empty the tank is
36:21the message from andrew trimble let's go all the way home over two and a half minutes done remember
36:26it's five oh two that's where they've got to be and they've got to be inside if they want to avoid
36:30the eliminator second piece placed in the frame and third to go is ellen she's got the uh straw bale
36:40jump she is a scientist an environmental scientist that's a good solid start from ellen hilliard great
36:47stuff that's perfect we're in good shape that's really good so number two of the four she has to get
36:54over grab it at the end of the rope good steady pace let's go there's the third piece
37:05with the last bit of max effort through four minutes 502 is what they've got to try and beat
37:10to avoid the eliminator this is going to be tight the third piece of the jigsaw placed inside the frame
37:17last to go is dad mel many years ago he was on a sports scholarship in the united
37:23states all the way home now let's go great fitness and mel you can see that as he pulls that tire down
37:30the trench they're not going to do it they're just going to miss out now has the final piece of the
37:37jigsaw so the hilliard family because they couldn't beat the linehans time of 5.02 they've been very
37:43close haven't they they really have been very close they've no time healthy to carry into this clock
37:47stops at 5.14 they are in the eliminator the hilliards so with all four races complete the
37:59mckenna's and the linehans have got the fastest times with the hilliards and the hickeys at the
38:04bottom half of the scoreboard despite their time penalty the linehans remain in second place
38:09and along with the mckenna's grab a place in the quarterfinals leaving the hilliards and the hickeys in
38:15the eliminator
38:38welcome back to ireland's fittest family now before the break we saw andrews mckenna's
38:42and donica's linehans both guarantee themselves a spot in our quarterfinals but there's still one
38:48spot up for grabs and it's a trimble versus o'callaghan eliminator for the hilliard and hickey families
38:57it's time now for the eliminator where andrews hilliards are going to take on donica's hickeys but
39:01will andrew continue that winning streak for our newbie coaches by bringing two families through to
39:07the quarterfinals let's find out tonight's eliminator will be relentless first our families must flip a
39:16heavy truck tire for 50 meters down the runway until it's completely past the fittest family barrels
39:23next it's a climb over a 2.6 meters high container and up and over three round straw bales after that they
39:31have to carry a 50 kilogram army training log to a pallet with eight sandbags they have to carry those to
39:37another pallet before tackling our eight foot or 2.4 meters high wall once over that it's a run up our
39:44famous ramp the first family with four people standing at the top wins the race and a place in the quarterfinals
39:50the entire day it does feel like it's been a marathon of the day it's going to come down to a couple of
40:01moments that ramp at the end that's going to be the big one you know i did always want to have a go at
40:10the ramp so i'm going to get that chance now there's parts of the course that will make it harder with
40:17the wet weather particularly the ramp at the end hoping someone's going to get out with a towel before
40:21we go up it no i'm absolutely looking to finish trimby and get rid of one of his families it'd be
40:27great take the smugness off him it kind of feels like there's a change in tone um in the last kind
40:33of 10 minutes there's a seriousness has descended on the whole group we're going to have to see if it's
40:38going to be beginner's luck or a lot of experience see you soon thank you lord thank you are we still
40:43friends no i'm chatting in about six minutes the eliminator is about to begin for the hilliard family
40:52in gold it's ellen julia alana and mel and for the hickeys in white it's jody connor ruby and cindy
41:02three two one a place in the quarterfinal is on the line here for the hilliards in gold closest to us
41:15and the hickey family wearing white on the left of your screen so this tire well the hilliards appear
41:22to be taking turns with this so just going two at a time but it's more of a combined effort from the
41:28hickey family as you can see the weather has taken a little bit of a turn and it's a lead at the
41:37minute for the hilliards so their strategy working a little better under the watchful eye of andrew
41:42trimble is with the hickeys and it's not easy to keep that tire going straight but the hilliards have
41:51managed to do that and they are first through they have to go around the barrel and here they are at the
41:57container which is 2.6 meters high it's all about teamwork it's clear strategy they have an order
42:09so julia hilliard is first up for her family on top of the container and there's connor for the
42:13hickey family he's at some day just 14 years of age and it's not over yet so and that is jody about to
42:25get up there to make it three for the hickey family mel hilliard is finding that difficult
42:30it's not meant to be easy and it certainly is not easy and andrew just has to reposition
42:34that mass for mel got the hold of the lip at the top of the container and his three daughters are
42:41dragging him up there so all four hilliards are on top of the container it's a bit more of a battle
42:48for the hickey family but they're sorted now and then you've got to get back down the other side
42:53two point six meters a couple of stumbles there it's a long way down but they are bunched up falling
43:02all over the place here we go with the straw bales this eliminator has everything in it it's a serious
43:08test of fitness of strategy of resilience mental toughness the works and they've lost a little bit
43:18of time there the hickey family connor is the anchor man isn't he there's mel hilliard still a long way
43:28to go and the prize is big a place in the quarterfinals this log the army training log weighs 50 kilograms
43:39and off they go a lead for the hilliards on the left in gold
43:41but it's certainly not much of a lead you wouldn't be writing home about this so they get rid of the
43:49training log and now they've got to move these sandbags from one pallet to the other
43:54they've taken them all both families here we go they are neck and neck
44:01sandbags delivered and this wall is eight feet high 2.4 meters high
44:09really the same gig smaller than the container
44:16this stage there legs arms everything burning nothing is straightforward so connor is the first
44:22over from the hickey family here come the hilliards you got a turn wrong
44:28so they've got two up at the top and they can help the others can they
44:31you're okay or will they be able to so the rain has been coming down steadily all the way through
44:38this eliminator and it's just making things much more difficult everything is quite slippy
44:44but the hilliards now the four of them are over at that final wall and now they get a look at the
44:49ramp and the hickey family are there as well so it's come down to this mel hilliard on the left and
44:55jody hitting on the right and mel has got a hold of the top lip of that jody's come straight back
45:00down so mel trying to drag himself up there andrew trimble has been very cool and calm and collected
45:06it's a simple straightforward message for him so the hilliards have got one up the hickeys no
45:10one at the moment and you can see just how slippy that ramp is so jody i think he is having another
45:16go and he's failed too and one of the hilliards has come back down as well so the tension builds and
45:22grows the rain continues to fall and only mel hilliard has managed to get up to the top of that ramp
45:31you can see the stress and dunnick his face you can hear it in his voice another attempt another
45:36fail on both sides this is amazing never seen anything like this before but it's just like an ice ring
45:46so andrew trimble deciding to use the coat using anything he can to try and dry that ramp
45:54connor for the hickey family another attempt another fail
45:59come on let's see you jody jody has got a hold of the lip on the top of the ramp oh
46:06with every second mel leap to the top for the hilliard family looks even more impressive
46:12but the rain is still falling the ramp is so slippy and jody was so close again
46:20another girl so that is that yes it is ellen's up there two for the hilliards brilliant stuff
46:26absolutely amazing how did she manage to do that the hickeys still haven't got anyone up there
46:31and we carry on again and again and again
46:41and referee paula donovan has decided to call this
46:45what's going to happen here
46:48the health and safety of the families is always the paramount concern so just became
46:52unsafe for them to try and uh try any more attempts to get up the ramp the ramp is no longer fit for
46:57purpose so we've decided that we're going to base the result of the eliminator on the fastest time
47:03in the time trial that means that the family going through to the quarterfinal is going to be
47:07the hilliards used at the fastest time
47:13thank you
47:15it was just getting slippery and slippery it was more so you're actually afraid then
47:18is one of us actually gonna hurt ourselves so definitely was the right call i think
47:21that wasn't a ramp it was a water slide
47:23we are disappointed disappointed that we didn't even get one of the guys up
47:27but like it was impossible for the hickeys you should be so proud of yourselves honestly incredible
47:34your endeavor all day and especially connor i'd say connor it was just for me to stand out
47:41we're all dead proud of you yeah so fantastic to have you hickeys and we're so sad to lose you
47:48standard of coaches and families this year in ireland for this family
47:52you can't afford a mistake and i'm having too many at the moment i need to up my game
47:57hats off to the hickey family they're incredible and we battled with them in the first heat
48:01and we end up battling against him in the eliminator but to come out on top
48:06it's just i'm so proud of of our family the girls it's just amazing andrew i did say to you
48:12that it comes down to the ramps all the time were you expecting that though no at the start it was kind
48:16of funny yeah and then it got not that funny not that funny and then i looked up at one stage and
48:21mel was up at the top and he just looked like a lonely dad that wanted to spend time with his
48:26daughters and we were trying to reunite this family this is what it felt like i'm delighted you know
48:32it's 2-0 trimble or callaghan do you know the best part is you get to do it all over again in the
48:37quarter final congratulations oh that's it andrew trimble has made it two from two with our newbie
48:45coaches but will the beginners look continue next week we'll have the last of our heats back at base camp
48:51we'll see you then next week veteran coach davy fitzgerald and swimming champion ellen keene
49:00go head to head in our third and final heat spin down go go go i like to be cool calm and collected
49:08whereas davy doesn't do that he just likes to throw his toys out of the pan where one of them will lose a
49:15family take your time be composed you will get there that doesn't sound like sabotage at all
49:22well a different level of stamina is needed next as more house hunters trick around some cheap european
49:26homes and then mondo is in denial about his actions in fair city that's coming up at half eight
49:45so
49:48you
49:50you
49:52you
49:54you
49:56you
