00:00And finally, Colt Series Ireland's fittest family has given us yet another twist.
00:09The addition of three new coaches has caused quite the stir.
00:12Existing coaches Anna Geary, Donego Callaghan and Davey Fitzgerald must surely be feeling the heat.
00:19Anna! Anna! Anna! Anna! Look, look!
00:23I've already issued a statement, not making any more comments at this time.
00:30No comments. No comments too. He's on the go.
00:34That's big news, isn't it? Ireland's fittest family has made the cover of the New York Times
00:37with huge news that this season is going to see six coaches.
00:41If Sunday's ever be the same again, it's incredible. I hope Davey Fitzgerald is okay with it.
00:45Yeah, bring it on.
00:49They won! They won! It's over! Davey Fitzgerald is the champion again for the fourth time.
00:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!
00:56Ireland's fittest family is back. Buckle up for eight weeks of mind-blowing competition
01:02with 12 of the fittest families in the country and six, yes, you heard that right, six coaches.
01:09It's Sunday night. You're on the couch. We're on the beach. Let's do this!
01:14Over eight gruelling weeks, our families will go head-to-head in a series of events
01:20designed to push them to their limits. From the tough terrain of an army training camp,
01:27through the sticky swamps of hell and back, and the deep icy waters of Drada Porte.
01:32It will all come down to these ramps in our grand final in spectacular Avondale in County Wicklow,
01:38where one family will rise to the top and grab that €15,000 cash prize
01:44and the title of Ireland's fittest family 2025.
01:48Welcome to Ireland's fittest family. We're here at our base camp in Gormanstown, County Mead,
02:01and it's the first of our three heats. But before we dive in, it's time to find out what all this new coach fuss is about.
02:09Over to you, Dara.
02:11Thanks, Laura. So, yes, big changes ahead. It's time to rip up the rulebook.
02:16There's some new kids in town. First up, Dublin GA and sports legend, Michael Dara-McCaulie.
02:22There is Michael Dara-McCaulie.
02:24That's it.
02:25Horrible.
02:26It's over the bar.
02:28Very yin-yang that I'm, like, extremely relaxed, right up until the actual thing is happening,
02:33and then I'm extremely unrelaxed. Let's see how that plays out.
02:37Get him up! Get him up! Whatever he has to do, get him up!
02:39Our second new coach, Paralympic swimming champion, Ellen Keane.
02:43Coming into the red markers now, Ellen Keane.
02:46He's on our way to go for Ironman!
02:48There's no point in joining the coaching squad if you don't have that killer instinct.
02:54And I know how to win.
02:55Go, go, go, go! Finish, go! Finish, go! Finish, go!
02:57Our final new addition to the coaching panel, having represented Ireland 70 times,
03:02it's rugby great Andrew Trimble.
03:04I believe whenever you get out there in the heat of the battle, it's going to get intense.
03:12I know I'm going to get fired up, excited and flustered.
03:14Drop those legs, grab those legs!
03:16Now we have three new coaches in the mix, which means there's going to be a lot more mind games.
03:20I think I'm ready for the pressure. There's a bit of intensity, a bit of rivalry.
03:24This is going to be another challenge. I like that. It's new, it's different.
03:28This year, the gloves are off. Everything goes.
03:31As long as I stay cool, calm and collected, I'll be fine.
03:34Be wary around Anna Geary at the moment. She's on a mission.
03:37Who's Anna? Is that that mad Corkman that doesn't stop shouting?
03:40You know what they say, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
03:44Series 13, here we go. Lucky for some, especially me.
03:48It's all to play for. Over to you, Laura.
03:53Thanks, Dara. Now tonight, in our first heat, Camogie star Anna Geary will go head-to-head
03:58with Dublin football legend Michael Dara McCauley.
04:02Next week, in our second heat, it'll be Dunica versus Andrew.
04:05And in our third and final heat, it's Davy versus Ellen.
04:10So when I heard that Michael Dara is going to be a new coach,
04:13I laughed because we're both from the GA world.
04:15He wouldn't be here if he didn't want to make his mark in Ireland for his family.
04:19But I'm hoping that we can teach him a few things.
04:21Each coach has two families in tonight's competition.
04:24Anna's families are the Carras from Westmeath and the McClements from Down.
04:29Michael Dara's families are the Burns from Dublin and the Walshes from West Cork.
04:34Michael Dara, welcome to Ireland for his family.
04:36Welcome. Great to have you. How are you feeling?
04:39Feeling good, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
04:41I've heard all about this kind of competitive side of Anna.
04:44It's coming out pretty strong.
04:45I love taking Cork people down a peg or two.
04:47So this is going to be a win-win.
04:48Anna, how are you feeling about going up against Michael Dara?
04:50I know this is a completely new event,
04:53but at the same time, you have been here for years and years.
04:55She's the Fittest Family Elven, isn't she?
04:57Yeah, exactly. I'm the veteran.
04:58I'm the veteran.
04:59You ought to watch out.
05:00If you thought she was competitive before.
05:01I'm going to thank that.
05:02It's hard to believe, actually, I'm around a decade now in Ireland's Fittest Family.
05:05Is there going to be pressure on me?
05:06Absolutely.
05:07But he's the rookie, so I'm hoping to maybe get into his head a bit.
05:11I know she has the experience, but I think I have a few little tricks up my sleeve.
05:15So it's game time.
05:16All the talking is done and we are ready to go.
05:18You seem quite tame. You seem quite nice now.
05:20I cannot wait to see how you kick off.
05:23Best of luck.
05:23There you go. Best of luck.
05:24Thanks. Thanks, pal.
05:27First up, we have Michael Dara's family.
05:29The Walshes from West Cork.
05:31I signed up for the show.
05:33You'd watch it and you'd go into school and you'd chat with the lads.
05:35You'd be like, oh, that was cool.
05:36Oh, I'd love to do this someday.
05:38And the day has finally come where we can actually get to do it the next day.
05:41I'd say Michael's the most competitive.
05:43He's very quick at picking up a sport.
05:45No matter what he does, he does it well.
05:48She's mam's flying fit.
05:49She's always doing her exercise or she's kayaking.
05:51You mightn't see her working out or anything, but you know, she's doing it behind the scenes.
05:57Aidan is our strong boy.
05:59He always stuck with training.
06:00He always picked himself back up and now he's stronger than everybody.
06:04Until about 18 months ago, Alfie refused to do sport.
06:08I'll show up these two boys and show them at real strength and work ethic is.
06:12I'm hoping that things get tough, that they'll pick me up and sweep me off my feet.
06:16Anna's first family are the cars from Westmeath.
06:20I took on the responsibility of applying.
06:23It was kind of hard to convince everyone at first.
06:25Tom's reputation as a sportsman, extremely hardworking, very dedicated,
06:29probably no nonsense as well.
06:30Gareth likes to dabble in a lot of sports.
06:36And Gareth is probably the all-rounder, I would say, on the team.
06:39What Elizabeth will bring to the team is a huge endurance base.
06:43She is very strong.
06:44She's right up there with the best in the world.
06:47Simon's definitely the sorest loser.
06:48Extremely competitive, which is definitely an advantage in an event like this, I think.
06:53Playing football out in the green when we were younger, I was the one kind of kicking and screaming if we lost.
06:57The cars are ready to smash it.
07:01Three families will qualify tonight.
07:03All four families will compete in two events, Box to the Top and Truck Pull.
07:09The two losing families from Box to the Top will be given a 20-second time penalty for Truck Pull.
07:14The two families with the fastest times in Truck Pull will go straight through to the quarter-finals.
07:20And the two families with the slowest times will battle it out in our Army Eliminator for the remaining place in the quarter-finals.
07:26Our first head-to-head event involves sandbags, sweat and strategy.
07:33One box, one mission, get it to the top or get left at the bottom.
07:47Tonight, members of the Irish Defence Forces will demonstrate this test of strength, strategy and stamina.
07:52One person from each family starts the race standing on an Army kit box in the sea.
07:58On the sound of the horn, they must jump off the box, pick it up and run with it to their remaining family members.
08:05With the family are four 15kg sandbags.
08:08Between them, they must carry the sandbags and the box through the rest of the course.
08:13Next, it's a 200m run broken up by crawl through two Army camo nets.
08:19Once through them, it's a run up a hill and onto a platform.
08:22The sandbags have to be placed inside the box and the lid closed.
08:25When all the family members are on the platform, they go down a ladder and up a wall.
08:30Finally, it's a run up a steep bank.
08:32When all four family members are standing at the top of the bank, they win the race.
08:36The losing family will carry a 20-second time penalty into the next event.
08:45Brand new event, we've never seen it before.
08:47I'm a bit raging about that because I would love to have had a little bit of an advantage over Michael Dara if I'd seen the course before.
08:52It's fairly straightforward. It's running and a bit of strength.
08:54And I think the waltzes have all got a decent background in this space.
08:57So I think that we should be nicely balanced for it.
08:59The lads have given me the role as pacer.
09:02So all I have to do is put blinkers on.
09:04I'm not allowed to look left or right. I just have to go.
09:07We've come up with a collective strategy among us all and we'll stick to that.
09:11We have been chatting about a bit of a strategy there and the main thing is we're all on the same page.
09:16So that's a good start.
09:18The thing I'm most concerned about with this race is probably the start.
09:21Because I don't like wet feet.
09:23A lot can go wrong, Elizabeth.
09:24It looks easier than it actually will be, but that's what makes it great.
09:29It's time for our first head-to-head.
09:31There's Gareth Carr in black and Aidan Walsh in green.
09:35They're out at sea in this little pocket of County Mead that touches the Irish Sea.
09:39The rest of their families wait on dry land and away we go.
09:42Box to the top.
09:45Getting series 13 of Ireland's fittest family underway.
09:48There's a lead for Aidan Walsh at the moment.
09:50Not much of a lead and he flings that box up onto the bank and off he goes.
09:56Still a healthy lead for Aidan Walsh followed by Gareth Carr.
10:00Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
10:02So sandbags, now they've got to move those.
10:07Let's go, let's go.
10:07And they're deciding to carry them.
10:09Alfie Walsh is sprinting away in front carrying two of those bags.
10:14So the bags are all on the move.
10:15They haven't put them into the kit box.
10:19Here we go up to the first of two camo nets.
10:23And it's really surprising how these can slow down the progress.
10:28Here come the rest of the Walsh family from West Cork.
10:32The cars from County West Mead.
10:36The dunes around here in Gormiston made famous by the legendary
10:40Mead football team of the 1980s under the great Sean Boylan.
10:43Those guys had some very punishing days around this part of County Mead.
10:49And this is a punishing start.
10:51Michael Dara McCauley, his debut in the competition.
10:55Anna Geary, a veteran at this stage.
10:57Should probably kill me for calling her a veteran, but you know what I mean.
11:02So the Walshs have the lead.
11:04Three of them have got away from the second camo net.
11:07And here is Tom Carr.
11:10A GEA legend in his own right.
11:13So the Carr's having trouble at that camo net.
11:16You can see the sandbags on the ground.
11:18And this is costing them time.
11:19So Tom has gone out in front on his own.
11:21The Walshs are pretty much together.
11:23So they have the advantage.
11:24The losing family in this event will carry a 20-second time penalty into the next event.
11:30So Tom Carr is there on his own.
11:32And the Walshs are all together.
11:34And this really is theirs to lose.
11:37But referee Paulo Donovan is telling Tom Carr to wait.
11:39Because all the sandbags have to be in that box.
11:41And the lid has to be closed.
11:43So the Walshs, well they haven't been brilliant here.
11:45And look at the cars.
11:46They're closed right up.
11:47And they're at that wall.
11:48And Tom Carr is up to the top of it.
11:50There's three of the Walsh family up there now.
11:52That was Amy who was helped up by her two sons.
11:54And here come the cars led by Tom.
11:56And closely followed by Elizabeth Simon and Garrett.
11:59This is going to be very, very close.
12:01The Walshs on the left.
12:02All four have to be up at the top of that hill.
12:04It's really tight.
12:05There's two cars up there.
12:06Three and now is it going to be four?
12:08This is really, really tight.
12:09I can't make out who won that.
12:11That is really tight.
12:12We're going to have to go to a photo finish.
12:15It's always really bittersweet when it comes down to a photo finish.
12:19You know, it's the hope that kills you.
12:20What a start.
12:21Yeah, that was magic.
12:22Like, what was it?
12:22A little milliseconds by the end of it.
12:30Walshs, cars.
12:31I didn't think we'd be doing this this early on.
12:33Photo finish.
12:33You gave us a cracking start.
12:35But I can reveal that the winner of our very first race,
12:39Michael Dara and the Walshs.
12:44Oh, we're feeling great after that.
12:45Starting off in the water was tough, but we just put our heads down.
12:49A bit disappointed, but in fairness, I thought we gave it our all.
12:52Defeated, but we competed well.
12:54Bit of time to make up, but I think we can do that.
12:56The start that Michael Dara got in Ireland for his family, I'd probably equate it to, like,
13:01getting a goal in the opening minute of an All-Ireland final.
13:04Like, it was the perfect start.
13:05I ain't saying what I was going to say.
13:06I'm coming here now.
13:07But there's a long match, okay?
13:09That's all I'm saying, and it's not over yet.
13:11I only caught the end of that, but I know she's talking to Michael Dara.
13:14Oh, yeah.
13:15He's been walking around the place all day, of what I've heard, that he's smoking.
13:19He's like, this is easy.
13:20This isn't that hard at all.
13:22I only started and I was like, I really earned that smoke face.
13:25Two more families will take on Box to the Top now, and a chance for Anna to catch up with
13:31Michael Dara with her McClements family from County Down.
13:34Our main strength as a family would definitely be teamwork.
13:37Knowing our limits and knowing each other's limits.
13:39Judd has great strength, so he has.
13:41He's a good runner.
13:42He's a fast guy to catch on a track, so he is.
13:44My sister Sarah is definitely the secret weapon, and small but mighty.
13:47The other families have a tough route ahead of them, because us McClementses are tough.
13:55We're a good, strong team.
13:57From running, to swimming, to strength work, it's all there.
14:02Each one of us are different.
14:03Other families should fear the McClementses, because hard work and determination is never
14:09too far from our minds.
14:11We definitely are going to win Ireland's Fittest Family.
14:13I think we're going to give everyone a run for their money.
14:15Michael Dara's second family are the Burns from Dublin.
14:20It was my idea to apply for Ireland's Fittest Family, I thought.
14:24A unique bonding experience together.
14:26John is my first phone.
14:27He sort of treats you like you're in the gym.
14:30You know, one of his clients.
14:33No.
14:33I have to convince my mam a little.
14:35I wouldn't put her up for this if I didn't think she had that inner fight.
14:39I think Jack, he's going to bring a lot to the team in terms of he's 19.
14:42He has, like, a lot of drive-bound eagerness.
14:45I think the girls are going to love him.
14:46Fireball.
14:47He has great hair in comparison to me.
14:49Paul's great.
14:50He gets stuck in, you know, when I told him that we were going to be doing this.
14:53He was just, like, all in.
14:54He's almost like my big brother sometimes.
14:56We're going to work like dogs and bring you home to Dublin.
15:02It's a great first event to kick off with.
15:04There's a lot of different kind of strength and fitness required.
15:07The McClemmons were a bit nervous this morning,
15:09but I can already see as they've walked the course now,
15:11they're starting to get into it.
15:12They're starting to size up their competition.
15:14I think the hardest bit of the course is to get over the wall.
15:17I feel like it'll be hard to get up.
15:19There'll be setbacks.
15:20We'll let them know there's going to be setbacks
15:21and how we're going to pick up from them.
15:23We drop the box, whatever it is,
15:24and we're going to have to be ready to pick it up and go again.
15:26Just ready to get into it.
15:28Ready to just get going, try and win.
15:30I'm looking forward to get going because waiting around,
15:32that's the worst.
15:33I just want to get in, get done.
15:35Ready to start out in the Irish Sea are James McClemmons in blue
15:41and John Byrne in pink.
15:42The rest of the family waiting to go.
15:46Paula Donovan gets them underway.
15:49So James against John and they're right beside each other.
15:53There's a little bit of a lead for John Byrne.
15:56So that box, well, John is making that look pretty straightforward up on his shoulder.
16:03Just behind him.
16:04The McClemmons from County Down.
16:07And the Byrne family are from Dublin.
16:09And it's the Byrne family who lead under the watchful eye of Michael Dara McCauley.
16:13Anna Geary with her McClemmons family.
16:17And Anna is working closely with Sharon McClemmons.
16:20I wonder does she have a bit of an issue in the early part of this box to the top race?
16:25So, first of the camo nets.
16:30And the Byrne family all together and pushing through net number one.
16:35Closely followed by the McClemmons.
16:39So there is Sharon and she's, well, moving but not moving particularly smoothly.
16:46Let's see if she can recover from that and there's still a long way to go.
16:49And that is Sarah McClemmons described by her family as the secret weapon.
16:55Now the secret's out now and the McClemmons stuck into the middle of this box to the top.
17:02Second race of the day.
17:04The losing family will incur a 20 second time penalty.
17:08So the Byrne family pretty much all together.
17:11The McClemmons have got spread out.
17:12That's James and Sharon back at the second cargo net.
17:18So Anna's role and Michael Dara's role very important here.
17:21But the McClemmons have lost time.
17:24They've two up on the platform.
17:25Here comes the kit box.
17:27In the box.
17:29And Sharon's still carrying that one remaining sandbag.
17:32So the Byrne family now starting their descent on that ladder.
17:36All the sandbags have been placed in the kit box.
17:39And they have a really healthy advantage.
17:42The McClemmons looking fatigued at this stage.
17:44This hasn't gone according to plan for them.
17:49So the Byrnes well they are in cold position.
17:54They have a commanding lead.
17:56And they've all four family members up at the top of that wall.
18:00The McClemmons trying to close the gap.
18:02Now Sharon is helped to the top by her son Jude.
18:09But the Byrne family are very nearly there.
18:13That has been quite a performance from them.
18:15We call it a statement victory.
18:17It didn't work out for the McClemmons family.
18:18They had issues earlier in the course.
18:20Sharon didn't look happy at all.
18:22But they will have that 20 second time penalty
18:24to take into the next event.
18:26I'm really disappointed for the McClemmons.
18:28It just didn't go right.
18:29Sharon picked up an early injury when she jumped off
18:32the dune.
18:32I think she hurt her glute.
18:34So she wasn't able to run.
18:35It was a disjointed then from there on out.
18:37To jump down I just felt like my hip go.
18:39And it was like that was it.
18:40I was like I actually can't go any faster.
18:42So that was disappointing.
18:44But yeah we enjoyed it all.
18:46Yeah it was good fun.
18:47All in all.
18:48Anna a great fight put in by the McClemmons homily.
18:50Yeah it was brilliant.
18:51To be honest like they did so well.
18:53And even we got a little bit stuck in the cargo net.
18:55They made up a lot of ground towards the end.
18:57I think in fairness to the Byrnes they did a great first run.
18:59We were kind of chasing a little bit.
19:01The McClemmons I think their confidence is a little bit down.
19:03So it'll just be about reminding them that you know it's a new event.
19:06It's a it's a blank slate and anything can happen.
19:08And then just keeping the fingers crossed that Sharon's okay.
19:10How are the champs on the start?
19:13Go on.
19:13Go on Anna.
19:13Well done Chief Airplane.
19:16Well done Byrnes.
19:17Congratulations.
19:18There you go now.
19:20You've won under your belt.
19:21I sort of can't really remember getting up.
19:24I just kept going.
19:27Hopefully keep moving.
19:29She was a star.
19:29She was actually way quicker than I thought she was.
19:31And she flew up the hills as well.
19:33Not a bother on earth.
19:34It's time to spare.
19:35Congratulations Byrne family.
19:37McClemmons we still have another event to go.
19:39Best of luck to the Lottie and I'll see you shortly.
19:41All right.
19:41Yeah.
19:42One win down.
19:42Three more wins.
19:44Four wins to go to the final.
19:45So yeah.
19:46Whatever we need to get to the final.
19:47Give me 60 seconds of hard work.
20:09Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
20:12Before the break Michael Dyers, Walsh and Byrne families both bag themselves a win in
20:17box to the top.
20:18But can Anna's Cars and McClemmons overcome that time penalty and get themselves a win
20:25in their next event?
20:28We're finding it very difficult to come up with a name for this one because I couldn't
20:31think of anything that rhymed with truck.
20:33So this is Truck Pull.
20:40Easy.
20:40Truck Pull is a test of pure strength and stamina.
20:47All four family members start with a leg burning 250 meters run down the decommissioned
20:53Defence Forces runway.
20:55Then it's the not so simple task of pulling a 7.5 ton army truck back up the same 250 meters stretch.
21:03The more ground they cover, the more they'll feel the burn.
21:06When the front wheels of the truck are over the finish line, the clock stops.
21:09But what will those 20 second penalties do to the overall time?
21:14Let's find out.
21:18First up to take on our grueling Truck Pull is Michael Dower and the Walshes.
21:23They won their first event, so they're heading into this with an advantage.
21:26I highly advise somebody to pull a truck and go down and pull like there's no tomorrow.
21:33But in general, I am worried one of the lads, Michael, has a hamstring like it's not great.
21:37And iron mine in the leg a little bit to just see what works for you.
21:40You might have to go the front way around, figure it out as you go along and just pull like there's
21:44no tomorrow.
21:44I'm feeling pretty confident about this.
21:46It looks like it requires a bit of brute force, so I think it suits us down to the ground.
21:50Once you get it going, you'll find out what works here.
21:52No eliminator for us.
21:54We have a great confidence boost after winning the last race,
21:57so we'll use that to our advantage and pull like dogs.
22:00Just like the O'Donovans.
22:02So lining up for the Walsh family from left to right, Alfie, Amy, Michael and Aidan.
22:10And this is Truck Pull and they're on the decommissioned runway in Gormanston.
22:16Amy is at the back there, Mum Amy.
22:19So Alfie, Aidan and Michael leading the way.
22:21So this sprint is over 250 meters.
22:26And there's the truck.
22:27All seven and a half tons of it.
22:31So what way will they take on these ropes?
22:34So Michael and Alfie are on one of the ropes.
22:38And Aidan is on his own at the moment and it's just about getting it going.
22:46So Amy is arriving now.
22:47And this is a serious effort and they have got that going very nicely, haven't they?
22:53So the momentum is with the Walsh family.
22:59They have no time penalty to deal with.
23:02So whatever you see at the end on that clock will be their time.
23:05And now they really have this moving.
23:08So they have to pull up 250 meters.
23:10Alfie is starting, is leaving, sir.
23:21And the rope wrapped around the waist is a tug of war tactic, but it certainly seems to be working.
23:29And Amy just repositioning herself.
23:30Halfway, lads, halfway.
23:32They're at halfway.
23:36It is quite a sight to see four people pulling this huge truck.
23:42Everything's burning at this stage.
23:44Keep it going, keep it going, keep it going, Amy.
23:45Keep giving whatever you have.
23:46So this will be the time for the rest to try and better.
23:53Michael Dara McCauley has certainly settled into life as a Finnish family coach, hasn't he?
23:57On day one, two and a half minutes.
24:03And that finish line is in sight.
24:05Once the front wheels of the truck breach the line, the clock will stop.
24:10These final few meters really, really testing the Walsh family from Westcourt.
24:15They're a GA mad family.
24:19Really, any technique will do now at this stage, but you can see how hunched over they are.
24:24Driving the legs, pulling that truck along.
24:29They are very nearly there.
24:31The last couple of meters for the Walsh family.
24:34And the clock stops at three minutes and 16 seconds.
24:37We'll see just how good that is.
24:40Super.
24:44That was rotten.
24:45That was really hard.
24:46I can't stand.
24:47I can't lift my arms.
24:48That was really heavy.
24:50Come on over here to me.
24:52Oh my goodness.
24:53You made that look like a piece of cake.
24:55Oh, I can't talk.
24:58Michael Dara, I feel like that's a good sign.
24:59They gave it their all.
25:00Yeah, I nearly collapsed after that.
25:03They absolutely gave it socks and they left it all out there.
25:06Can't ask me anymore.
25:07If we do face the Eliminator, it's going to be carnage because I have nothing left.
25:11Next up are Anna and the McClemmons.
25:15Now they're heading into this with a 20 second time penalty.
25:18So they'll have to bring their A game.
25:21The McClemmons were definitely disappointed after this morning.
25:24Whereas the truck pull now, while it's going to be tough.
25:25I think it's a chance for them to feel, let's give this 100%.
25:29Anna has given us a good strategy.
25:30We just need to start and get it moving as soon as possible.
25:33The hardest part of this is getting it moving.
25:35And it's all about getting as low as possible and getting those legs moving.
25:39The challenge for the McClemmons is that Sharon is injured.
25:42So what we've done is we've decided to pair James with Sharon.
25:45So James is literally going to be taking all of the weight.
25:48The most I pulled around the farm is a calf out of the cows.
25:51So I don't know how we'll move it, but we'll give it a shot.
25:53This is a chance now to redeem yourselves and do as much as you can together, okay?
26:00About to go for the McClemmons are Jude, James, Sarah and Sharon.
26:10The issue here for the McClemmons family is that 20 second time penalty
26:13they incurred after boxed to the top.
26:15We've heard about mum Sharon's injury.
26:18She's not moving particularly freely at the moment,
26:22but we'll see how she copes over the course of this race.
26:26It's going to be challenging. It's going to be punishing.
26:293.16 is the time they have to try and better.
26:33Set by the Walsh's who were first to take this on.
26:36So Jude is first to arrive at the ropes.
26:38He's joined by his dad, James.
26:41And also there is Sarah.
26:43So they're trying to get this thing moving and it is moving now.
26:46All seven and a half tons of it.
26:48Sharon arrives to help her husband.
26:52James is just repositioning that rope as they got it moving.
26:57And this is moving nicely now.
27:02The McClemmons, well, they're a farming family from County Down.
27:05They get up most mornings at half past four.
27:07They work on the farm. Then they're in the gym by 6 a.m.
27:10And then they go to take on the rest of their day.
27:14So here we go, approaching one and a half minutes.
27:20Anna Geary wants them to lift the knees.
27:23So Sharon seems to be okay.
27:24But Sarah, her daughter, is going extremely well.
27:28She's a really talented 800 meters runner.
27:31And she is bringing those skills to bear here as she drives her family forward.
27:37And now, well, they're running with that truck.
27:39This is some performance by the McClemmons.
27:46Dragging the truck along for all they are worth.
27:49Paula Donovan, the referee, just keeping an eye on everything.
27:52Two minutes and 30 seconds just gone.
27:553.16 is the time they have to try and get inside.
28:00And they have a good rhythm about them now.
28:04The line is in sight for the McClemmons.
28:08Second to take on the truck full.
28:11Sarah really striding forward.
28:14Look at that from Sarah McClemmons.
28:16Leading her family home towards the finish line.
28:19It's going to be tight.
28:20Three minutes and 16.
28:22They've got to try and get inside.
28:23They're not going to do it.
28:23They're going to miss.
28:25They're going to miss it.
28:29Sarah McClemmons is doing all she can.
28:31Followed by Sharon and the two lads, James and Jude.
28:34The finish line is right there.
28:36And it stops at 3.25.
28:38The problem is you've got to add on the 20 seconds.
28:40And it goes to 3.45 for the McClemmons family.
28:43Yeah, I feel really tired after that.
28:45I'm totally exhausted.
28:46The legs have gone.
28:48And yeah, that was tough.
28:49They gave everything.
28:51Even as they were crossing the line,
28:52you could see it was gut-wrenching.
28:54It was written all over their faces.
28:55They never gave up, even though they probably wanted to at times.
28:57The McClemmons should be really proud of themselves.
28:59Like, they effectively pulled the truck with three members.
29:02And considering they kind of did it as a three,
29:05because, you know, when you have an injury,
29:06but you did whatever you could.
29:07You were brilliant.
29:08I just felt like they really, particularly Sarah,
29:10should give it all.
29:11I'm so proud, particularly of Sarah.
29:13Like, she's, you know, she's 17.
29:15And just for her to have stepped up,
29:17I'm very, very proud of the young lady that she's become.
29:21It was tough.
29:22So I'm glad I managed to get through it.
29:26McClemmons, well done.
29:27Yeah, well done.
29:28That was no easy feat.
29:29And I'll chat to you in a bit, okay?
29:30Thank you, Laura.
29:31Well done.
29:32You should be really proud.
29:34Next, we have Michael Dower and the Byrne family.
29:36After winning their event,
29:38they're hoping to make it two for two.
29:40That thing moves slowly.
29:41It takes a bit to get moving.
29:42So every second counts here.
29:44So we'll see how it goes, yeah.
29:45It'll scare you at the start.
29:46It'll scare you because it actually won't start moving.
29:48So you have to just get a bit of traction on it.
29:50And then once it gets rolling, just keep it rolling.
29:52It's going to be tough on the legs by the end of it,
29:53but we'll push through and get it done.
29:55As I said, all in.
29:56And how are you feeling this one?
29:59I don't think I'll give to any of that.
30:02I'll just have to do the motions.
30:04Definitely not going to underestimate the other teams,
30:06but we definitely feel a lot more confident going in with the 20 seconds.
30:0920 seconds or 20 minutes.
30:11I'm still nervous.
30:14On the start line for the Byrne family are
30:16John, Mum, Anne, Jack and Paul.
30:19Three, two, one.
30:24There's no time penalty to deal with here
30:26for the Byrne family from Dublin.
30:29Paul leading the way.
30:33So that run again, a reminder.
30:34It's 250 meters.
30:36Anne is on her way.
30:39So the three lads will get there first.
30:42And Michael, Darragh, Macaulay just reminding them about pace.
30:45Because, well, they've got to keep as much energy as they can in the tank
30:49for this next part of the challenge.
30:51Ready?
30:52Truck pull.
30:52Go!
30:54So it should suit them.
30:58This strength event.
31:00John is an MMA champion.
31:02They're into high rocks.
31:04Jack, the lads' cousin is into rugby.
31:08And look at that.
31:09They're driving forward.
31:10So Anne is here now and she'll get a hold of that rope.
31:14But the three lads have really got this moving.
31:18And this just feels fast.
31:21It looks impressive.
31:22It is impressive from the Byrne family.
31:24You can see the grimace on Paul's face over on the far side there.
31:27And now we're right behind.
31:28And he's at the front of that rope on the left-hand side as we look at it.
31:31The truck is seven and a half tons and the runway is long.
31:37It's very long.
31:38They have to move at 250 meters.
31:42So let's take a check on the time.
31:43Approaching two minutes for the Byrne family.
31:47There's two minutes done.
31:483.16 was the quickest.
31:50That was by the Walsh's earlier on.
31:55So the rhythm that feels like they've slowed a little bit,
31:59but that truck is still moving.
32:00And that's the trick in this event.
32:02And a grimace on the face of Paul in real discomfort at the moment.
32:07Let's finish it.
32:08Let's go.
32:08Let's go.
32:09That is the name of the game as they push towards the finish line.
32:15Michael Dara says there's just 20 meters left.
32:17Oh my word.
32:18There's a fall from Jack and he hit the tarmac.
32:21And that has affected their rhythm and their tempo.
32:23I wonder is he hurt.
32:25Jack back to his feet and back pulling that rope.
32:28But certainly he looks very fatigued at the moment.
32:31It's a hugely demanding event.
32:33Pulling this seven and a half ton truck over 250 meters.
32:37They are very nearly there.
32:40Jack driving through.
32:41Paul out at the front.
32:42Ann and John as well.
32:44And they're not going to beat three minutes and 16 seconds.
32:48And they've done it in three minutes and 31 seconds.
32:50They're second fastest for now.
32:56It's like I was in pain looking at them.
32:58So they gave it absolutely socks.
33:00It's like they couldn't speak for 10 minutes afterwards.
33:02So I think that just shows they left it out there.
33:03How are you feeling down there?
33:05Thumbs up.
33:06Great.
33:06That's all I needed out of you.
33:07You know, you think, no, not that it's going to be easy, but I didn't think it'd be that hard.
33:11You must have a big fat driver in there, have they?
33:13I can't say that.
33:14My mom up at the front leading the charge, alleviating that little bit of pressure off me,
33:19taking most of the weight, really helped.
33:21Jack, you didn't have a great time at that, you struggled a bit.
33:25Yeah, my legs are starting to give in.
33:27And we were actually moving really fast, but I couldn't pull and go backwards fast enough.
33:31So then when I transitioned back to the original position, I just tripped over my legs.
33:35So hopefully we got enough to get through.
33:38Do you think those legs will be able for an eliminator?
33:40Absolutely.
33:41We're ready for anything.
33:42That's the attitude. That's the attitude. Look, come on, mate.
33:45We can see the eliminator from here, and I'm a little scared.
33:50Finally, we have Anna and the cars.
33:52They'll need to be in the top two in this challenge to avoid the eliminator.
33:56The first seat probably didn't really go our way.
33:58Obviously just lost by a little bit, so we're kind of out to get a bit of revenge on that one.
34:02We have a 20-second penalty. Very easy to make that time up,
34:06but also we don't want to be adding unnecessary seconds onto our time either.
34:09So it's all about dialogue.
34:11Making up to 20 seconds is going to take a fair bit of pulling,
34:13but we think if we can get the truck going pretty quickly, we'll be there or thereabouts.
34:17Once you get there, you're starting to get that truck going, and then it's all for you picking it up.
34:21The mindset to go into this challenge with is anything can happen, any team.
34:26So we just have to go out and give our best.
34:28Relatively confident, but we were confident this morning as well.
34:32And look how that turned out, so it won't say too much.
34:34On the start line for the cars from left to right, Simon, Elizabeth, Tom and Gareth.
34:44The cars are carrying a 20-second time penalty into this truck pull event.
34:49Now the burns time of 3.31 is the target for the car family.
34:55If they can get inside 3.31, they will avoid the eliminator.
34:58So there is Tom, and Elizabeth, Simon and Gareth are out in front.
35:08So let's see what way they've decided to divide this up with these two ropes.
35:13Three, two, one, four.
35:15So you've got Elizabeth and Gareth on the right, and Simon and Tom closest to us.
35:21And they've got the truck moving already.
35:25That's a good start.
35:28Well, there's a slip there from Elizabeth with the rope,
35:31and she's now decided to drape it over her right shoulder.
35:34A minute done.
35:37And Tom just telling them to turn.
35:40Let's try and get some serious momentum going.
35:45And now they have it.
35:46So there's a clear strategy here.
35:49Tom with the rope wrapped around his shoulder and around his waist.
35:52And this looks quick.
35:54This is impressive.
35:56Elizabeth out at the front.
35:58She's the number one ranked triathlete in the country.
36:01This is not one of the triathlete disciplines, though.
36:04But that's a serious performance, and she drives those legs.
36:07Her dad beside her, and her two brothers behind.
36:13So two minutes done.
36:14Get inside 3.31.
36:15They avoid the eliminator because they would finish in the top two.
36:19And they'd go directly into the quarterfinals.
36:24The problem is that 20-second time penalty.
36:28The finish line is in sight, and they're slowing down,
36:30which is to be expected.
36:31It was such a fast start.
36:32So Simon behind his dad, Tom.
36:38He's a former tennis professional.
36:40Dig him in!
36:40Dig him in!
36:41Party second!
36:42Push hard!
36:43That's what I want!
36:44Hannah wants them to push as hard as they can.
36:46Let's go!
36:47They're hunched over again as they drive those legs forward.
36:52A roar from Tom to come on and get going.
36:54Elizabeth has been an absolute star for her family here.
36:58Grimace is in pain.
36:59The finish line is in sight.
37:00It's all about getting those tires over that finish line.
37:04Level with the two barrels.
37:06The clock stops.
37:07How have they done?
37:08We'll find out.
37:08Excellent.
37:09Super.
37:10Well done.
37:11Well done.
37:12Under the street.
37:13Anna, how do you feel after that?
37:15It was phenomenal.
37:16They were brilliant.
37:17Honestly, they worked so well as a team, but they powered through.
37:20Power is the word I would use as a power performance.
37:23I think you kind of left it all out there.
37:25Yeah, definitely left it out there.
37:26Just 20 seconds, just fingers crossed.
37:28Delighted with the time.
37:29Like, our time was so good.
37:31The only thing that's killing us now is that 20 seconds.
37:33It's going to haunt us forever.
37:34Lads, get yourself some water.
37:36Have a bit of a sit down for a minute.
37:38And fingers crossed that was enough.
37:39I could lie down, Anna.
37:40That was a lot.
37:41I'm quietly confident about this one, but that's the thing about Ireland's family.
37:45Just when you think you're true.
37:48The unpredictability of it kills you.
37:51It's time for me to give the families the final result.
37:55Hi, families.
37:57Well done today.
37:58You left absolutely everything out there, and that's all anyone can ask of you.
38:04It is now time for me to reveal who the first family are
38:08who are going through to our quarterfinals.
38:10With one second in the difference.
38:16It's Anna the Carrot.
38:18Congratulations!
38:19I feel really good after that result.
38:22Definitely giving us a boost now to go into the next round.
38:25Buzzing now to get through that.
38:26Great to get through automatically, and we'll get some training in, hopefully,
38:30before the next event.
38:32Bring on the quarterfinals.
38:33Yeah, we'll see.
38:34It's another day.
38:35Another day out.
38:36And the next family who are going through to the quarterfinals
38:40and avoiding tonight's eliminator.
38:45It's Michael Darragh and the Walshes.
38:47Congratulations!
38:48The Walshes, what a family.
38:50Like, all the boys have a bit about them.
38:52And the man, Amy, is absolutely lovely and gave it absolutely socks today.
38:54So is the live one.
38:56We are absolutely buzzing.
38:58We're buzzing, to be true.
38:59And we're buzzing.
39:00Being true now is a relief.
39:02We were really shaking there.
39:04You know what?
39:04We got one down.
39:05First eight on.
39:06Yeah.
39:06Bring on the quarterfinals.
39:07Bring on the quarterfinals.
39:08We're ready.
39:10The Carrots storm to the top of the leaderboard,
39:13despite their 20-second time penalty,
39:16beating the Walsh family by just one second.
39:19That leaves Michael Darragh's Burns and Anna McClements
39:22facing tonight's eliminator.
39:24Back to yourself!
39:32Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
39:35Now, before the break, we saw Anna's cars and Michael Darragh's Walshes make it straight through to the quarterfinals.
39:43But who is going to get that last spot up for grabs as Michael Darragh and Anna ramp up the rivalry and go head to head in the first eliminator of the series?
39:51The McClements and the Burns family have already shown such strength and teamwork today.
39:58It almost feels cruel to give them yet another hard challenge.
40:06I can't wait. It's the eliminator.
40:16I can't wait. It's the eliminator.
40:17Tonight's eliminator will be relentless.
40:23First, our families must flip a heavy truck tire for 50 meters down the runway until it's completely past the Fittest Family Barrels.
40:31Next, it's a climb over a 2.6 meters high container and up and over three round straw bales.
40:40After that, they have to carry a 50 kilogram army training log to a pallet with eight sandbags.
40:46They have to carry those to another pallet before tackling our 8 foot or 2.4 meters high wall.
40:52Once over that, it's a run up our famous ramp.
40:55The first family with four people standing at the top wins the race and a place in the quarterfinals.
41:00This now is about the McClements. Their back is against the wall.
41:11But if they fight, they have a chance to win. I just, I need them to bring that fight now.
41:15Just back yourself. It's all it is. It's about just trusting your fitness and backing yourself.
41:20I feel like a rabbit caught in the headlights going into the eliminator. How do you feel, James?
41:24I don't know what way to take it, but we'll try our best.
41:27Well, I'm feeling dread.
41:32But we got this. We're going to give her what we got and go until the wheels fall off.
41:37This is a long race. There's so many obstacles going on here. There's so many things that can go wrong.
41:41So that's all I'm saying to the lads. I'm like, just stay in the game.
41:44Stick with it. Do your best. Just give it socks. Leave it out there.
41:46You're going to die in this, but just leave it out there, right?
41:48Yeah. Ready to go? Yeah.
41:49Let's go. Let's go. We got this.
41:52Feeling a wee bit nervous, but we'll push through it.
41:55It's going to be tough. The McClements are absolutely underdogs.
41:58No one's given them a chance. Everyone loves an underdog.
42:03This is our first eliminator of the new series.
42:05For the Byrne family, it's Jack, John, Anne and Paul.
42:09And for the McClements, it's James, Sharon, Jude and Sarah.
42:12Three, two, one.
42:14And they are underway back out on the decommissioned runway in Gormonston and County Meath.
42:22That tire is very, very heavy and it's not easy at all. Anne is just stepping away from it and letting the three lads at it.
42:30It's difficult to keep it in a straight line. Sharon McClements is keeping out of this as well.
42:36She's just standing away from it and in front of the rest of her family, James, Jude and Sarah.
42:41And they have got this, but the Byrne family from Dublin are leading.
42:48So they're changing who flips the tire. Anne isn't getting involved in it at all.
42:53But they have the lead and they're very nearly at the finish line in pink, the Byrne family.
43:00The McClements wearing light blue.
43:04And the three of them, you can hear the instructions to each other.
43:06So it is a lead for the Byrne family, closely followed by the McClements.
43:13So they have to go around that barrel and they're up to the container.
43:15It's 2.6 meters high.
43:18This is about teamwork, strategy and calmness under pressure.
43:24And there is an awful lot of pressure. There is so much at stake.
43:26There is a place in the quarterfinals up for grabs.
43:30So that's Anne Byrne who's helped up to the top of the container.
43:34Sharon McClements is almost there as well. That's her son, Jude.
43:41So she's got to the top and Anne Byrne has got down the other side of the container.
43:48So there's very little between them, really.
43:51Slight advantage for the Byrne family.
43:53All four of them away from that container.
43:55So the McClements still stuck up on the roof.
43:58Here we go at these bales.
44:02And up over the first of them.
44:04And a bit of a slip there from Jude McClements.
44:10Anne wants them to push it now.
44:14So the Byrne family are still at the bales.
44:16There they are, just ahead.
44:21So Anne has got help from the rest of her family at each of these.
44:24It really is whatever works.
44:26And they are so difficult to get over and away from.
44:31Sharon McClements there at that bale.
44:33She's pushing through the pain barrier.
44:34She has an injury from the very first event today.
44:37The Byrne family have that 50 kilogram army training log.
44:41And they are moving well with it.
44:44Michael Darrell McCauley beside them.
44:46The McClements trying to close the gap.
44:49And that gap is growing all the time for the Byrne family.
44:52And they have dropped that log at the sandbags.
44:58There's always going to be sandbags involved today.
45:01And it doesn't matter how many you take.
45:02Off they go with them.
45:05So the McClements have closed a little bit.
45:08And there's no need at this stage of the race to panic.
45:10They are still in this.
45:11And still in with a fighting chance.
45:14The sandbags are on the move.
45:17And they're going to drop them on that pallet.
45:19As the Byrne family head towards the wall.
45:22It's eight foot high.
45:232.4 meters high.
45:27And Michael Darrell McCauley wants them to power through.
45:29The McClements have closed.
45:31How smooth can they be here at the wall?
45:33They're very tired at this stage.
45:34Both families are.
45:36So two of the Byrne family up at the top of the wall.
45:39They'll help the other two to get up there.
45:40Anne on the right been helped up in the pit.
45:42T-shirt.
45:44Almost been dragged up.
45:45Michael Darrell McCauley is very close up with his family.
45:49The pressure builds.
45:50The tension builds.
45:52So that is Sharon who's got up to the top of the wall for the McClements.
45:57And Anne Byrne gets over the other side.
46:00And she gets a look at this ramp.
46:02Michael Darrell McCauley by the way is keeping a very close eye on just how close the McClements are.
46:07Because they have closed the gap.
46:09There's no question about that.
46:11But they need to get away from this wall now as quickly as they possibly can.
46:16First to go for the Byrne family is Jack.
46:19He's up there.
46:19The advantage is still with the Byrne family.
46:21And John Byrne having a go now.
46:23So they two up there.
46:24The McClements need to get a move on.
46:26They really do.
46:27That's Jude McClements hanging on over on the far side.
46:30Now Paul Byrne has got up there.
46:31So there's three of the Byrne family up there.
46:33Only Anne to get up and they'll win a place in the quarterfinal.
46:36Jude McClements is still hanging on.
46:38His dad James trying to get up there.
46:39And Jude has come back down the ramp.
46:41It's going wrong for the McClements family.
46:43Can the Byrne family get their mum Anne up to the top?
46:47Anne is dragged up to the top.
46:48She's up there now.
46:50What a performance from the Byrne family for Michael Darrell McCauley.
46:53Anne stands up.
46:54They all stand up and they win.
46:55They are true to the quarterfinals.
46:57The McClements gave it absolutely everything.
46:59But they're out of the competition.
47:01Well done.
47:04Well done guys.
47:05I am gutted that they've gone out of the competition.
47:08But as a family they have done something amazing.
47:10And that they know they couldn't have given anything more.
47:12And as a coach you can't but be proud of that.
47:15How are you feeling?
47:16That was so tough.
47:17I'm very proud of Sharon.
47:18Yeah it was.
47:19I gave it my all.
47:20It was a close call in the end.
47:22And we did make some grind.
47:24So again I'm proud of that.
47:25Well done.
47:26You did the ramp.
47:27It must feel good.
47:29Yeah it does.
47:30Didn't think I would get up there.
47:32Well no bother to you either.
47:33It was a wee bit hard like.
47:35I'm exhausted and can't wait for my bed tonight.
47:38We're so sad to lose E.
47:40But you did phenomenal today.
47:42Congratulations lads.
47:43Well done.
47:44Good and give yourselves a group hug.
47:45You deserve it.
47:46You should be so proud of yourselves.
47:47Now it's a case of me having to say out loud.
47:50Michael Darrell won and a nil.
47:54That kills me to say it.
47:55The lads actually killed it like perfectly and it actually worked out so.
48:00I'm absolutely buzzing for the Burns and especially Fran.
48:04Look at the state.
48:04It was a tough challenge.
48:06Our backs were against the wall but yeah it was tough.
48:09I'm delighted we're through now.
48:11You have to be absolutely buzzing.
48:12Actually I don't care about you.
48:13Anne you're the superstar.
48:16How do you feel?
48:17I think we're a bit rough with her over the veils of hay and stuff like that.
48:23I'm proud of them for hauling me all around the place.
48:26Yes.
48:28And through to the quarterfinals.
48:30How does that feel?
48:31Great.
48:32Amazing.
48:32I always thought we would make it but maybe not the long way.
48:36By putting yourself in these uncomfortable situations you're going to get more comfortable.
48:40So we're going to up the ante, train a lot harder and come ready for the quarterfinals.
48:44So I hope they're all ready.
48:45Michael Darrow what a way to kick it off.
48:47Two family suits the quarterfinals.
48:49Two for two.
48:50Absolutely buzzing.
48:51Well let's see if you can keep it up.
48:52Congratulations.
48:53I'll see you guys in the quarterfinals.
48:56What an epic start to the heats.
48:59We will be back at base camp again next week where two more coaches go head to head.
49:04See you then.
49:07Next up, veteran coach Dunico Callaghan.
49:10And rugby legend Andrew Trimble.
49:12We'll go head to head in our second heat.
49:16Andrew has 70 caps for Ireland.
49:19I've 94.
49:20Ultimately whenever you get out there in the heat of the battle.
49:22I know I'm going to get fired up, excited, unflustered.
49:25Come on, stop feeling sorry for yourself.
49:26Let's go, get up, get up, get up, get up.
49:29Where one of them will lose a family.
49:30Get up, get up, get up.
49:30Oh, lucky.
49:32We're still friends.
49:32No.
49:37If you're looking for some more family friendly fun well check out The Unreal which is streaming
49:42now on RTE Player.
49:43It's all about a family who discovered they escaped an 80s sitcom.
49:46Then there's a spooky visit to a hotel.
49:49A ghost child and to be honest it just gets weirder from there.
49:51It's worth the watch.
