00:00Ahead of this week's parliamentary election in Iraq, members of the security forces and
00:04displaced people cast their ballots on Sunday in early voting.
00:08An estimated 1.3 million army and security personnel and around 26,000 displaced people
00:13are eligible to vote before election day on Tuesday.
00:17The election will help determine whether Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani gets a second
00:21term amid fears of a wider regional conflict.
00:25Displaced Yazidis, many of whom fled their homes over a decade ago after attacks by the
00:29Islamic State group, voted at a camp near Doha.
00:33Many have still not been able to return home because of political disputes and a lack of
00:37infrastructure.
00:38In Baghdad, Iraqi soldiers and police voted, as well as members of the Popular Mobilization
00:43Forces, a coalition of primarily Iran-backed militias.
00:47The fate of these militias will be a complicated issue for the next parliament amid tensions
00:51between Baghdad and Washington.
00:547,744 candidates are competing in the election, most from parties, largely
00:59line with sectarian interests.
