00:00Many people think I live alone, but in truth, I have a wife, and here's the proof.
00:09So, what's the dynamic between Gray and me?
00:13It's been very surprising.
00:16I'm very proud of you for being able to herd Gray, and it's also made y'all a lot closer than you ever were.
00:24Yes.
00:25Yes.
00:25Who'd have thunk it?
00:26Who would have?
00:27Who'd have thunk that would ever have happened?
00:30Woo!
00:31I'm Gray Benko, an interior designer in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
00:36I bring pattern, color, and creativity into my clients' homes alongside my partner, Crying Chelsea.
00:42Whoa!
00:43An interior designer extraordinaire who also keeps me in check.
00:47Nope, nope, let's drag it.
00:48And my general contractor, Grumpy, who can build anything that we dream of.
00:52You don't need me?
00:52I don't need you.
00:53I love that.
00:54And also happens to be my dad.
00:55Oh, my gosh.
00:57There's color everywhere.
01:00Despite my name, my world is a rainbow.
01:03This is the Herdericks.
01:05Their house was built in, I think, the 1930s.
01:08They're just having to change things up because they have a toddler and a teenager.
01:12Yep.
01:12And her father, who I think is about your age.
01:15Oh, another old guy.
01:16Is spending more and more time here.
01:18So they need a lot more storage and an extra bedroom, and this is it.
01:21This is it?
01:22Yes.
01:22The Herderick home is classic Charleston style.
01:261930s, the moldings, the way the exterior, the way the house presents itself to the street.
01:32It's a classic style.
01:34Hi.
01:34Welcome.
01:35How are you?
01:36We need to get in there and figure out how we can give them the extra space that they
01:41need and how we can give them an addition to their home that still feels historic like
01:47the rest of their house.
01:49Well, y'all's house is already really, really beautiful.
01:53We renovated in 2018, and now we have a 13-year-old and a 2-year-old, so we're just looking to
01:59make the home more functional.
02:00We need more storage, need a little bit more privacy.
02:03My dad's here a lot, which we love, but we only have three bedrooms, so to create more
02:09space would be fantastic.
02:11Okay.
02:11You guys want to show us around?
02:13Yeah.
02:13We'll show you the living room first.
02:15So we're wanting to create more of a study, but don't have an exact plan for this room.
02:23Okay.
02:23I work at home sometimes.
02:25He works at home sometimes, so maybe some built-in storage, but in a room where we have
02:30some privacy away from the kids at times.
02:32What do you want it to feel like when you walk in?
02:34He already lives with three women, so I do want it to be more masculine.
02:38How about you?
02:39No, I'm all for masculine.
02:41So, sort of moody?
02:43Yeah.
02:43I'd love to see these blinds go away.
02:45We're going to make those go away today.
02:47Yeah.
02:47That would be fantastic.
02:48They can go.
02:49Yeah.
02:50Obviously, this room is very open to the rest of the house.
02:52It is.
02:52We might need to close everything in just a little bit.
02:55Yeah.
02:55Closing in these openings, it gives you a place to put some base cabinetry and bookcases,
03:01which gives it more of the feel of an office.
03:03Yes.
03:03Maybe a built-in desk of some kind.
03:05Yeah.
03:06I think that would be great.
03:07All right.
03:08So let's talk about colors.
03:10Yeah.
03:10I think anything darker.
03:11Greens, blues.
03:12Are there any colors that you guys want to stay away from?
03:16Pink.
03:17Well, okay.
03:18Done.
03:19Check.
03:20I didn't see you as a pink guy.
03:22One thing we have not discussed is timeline.
03:25We would really like to be in by early June.
03:28We have a temporary apartment that we can stay in until then.
03:31Okay.
03:31If not, we're going to be with his parents.
03:35That sounds fun.
03:36Speaking for the grandparents of the world, we are going to get this project done on time
03:41so Morgan's parents can regain their sanity.
03:46I don't know that everyone feels the same about their children.
03:48I'd love for you all to come and visit.
03:51I'd love to have a house full of you for like three days.
03:55Why did we nickname you Grumpy again?
03:59For good reason.
04:01Yes.
04:02So if this is a living room and it becomes an office, what do we do for a living room then?
04:06Well, you can figure it out.
04:07Okay, so what's next?
04:11Next, we're going into the dining room.
04:13Okay.
04:16So what's the problem here?
04:18It's beautiful.
04:20Well, it's one of our biggest rooms in the house.
04:22So it's just more functionality.
04:24We want this to be welcoming for friends.
04:28So we need to figure out storage, furniture placement.
04:32Yeah.
04:33I think it's a design thing.
04:34It's not a construction thing.
04:36The room has got plenty of space.
04:37It's just to do what you want it to do.
04:39Yeah.
04:40That'd be great.
04:40Okay.
04:41The dining room, this is all you.
04:43I've got nothing to do with it.
04:44There's no construction happening in there.
04:47Have at it.
04:48Keeps it easy for me.
04:50Next room.
04:50This is your area of the house.
04:52Okay.
04:52So why don't you take them into the kitchen?
04:54Yeah.
04:54Let's go.
04:55You're the kitchen guy.
04:56Okay.
05:00Well, this is a beautiful kitchen.
05:02Your cabinets are great.
05:04They are.
05:04You want to keep your existing cabinets.
05:05We do.
05:06What do you want to do in here?
05:07We would certainly like to see more space in general, storage, a bigger island.
05:12And this area seems to be where everyone congregates, so it can seem pretty small at times.
05:17I think we need a bigger house.
05:18Yeah.
05:19We've taken away our living room and we need another bedroom.
05:23Yeah.
05:23So where are we going to have all those things?
05:26Yeah.
05:27And there's only one place for those things to be, and that's out there.
05:31Right.
05:32You've got this sitting room area here off the kitchen.
05:36Which is the current playroom.
05:37That's right.
05:38It seems to me that we're going to need to go off the back of the house here.
05:43You've got a screen porch back there.
05:46What if we take that porch, bring it all the way over to this wall and make that one big space?
05:52We're going to have a bedroom over there, living room there.
05:55Get rid of this wall and let this all be kitchen.
05:59I mean, I think that's a great idea.
06:01I think it solves a lot of our issues of adding the fourth bedroom, along with giving us more living room space.
06:08Four months is not a lot of time to add on half a house and at the same time maintain the style and character of the existing house.
06:20It's going to be a lot to do.
06:22It'll be easy peasy.
06:22It solves some problems, but it also creates some problems at the same time, because this whole return of cabinets disappears when we do that.
06:33But if we reconfigure this and the island maybe shifts down a little bit, I'm not sure.
06:40With these walls coming out in their entirety, could the island go this direction?
06:46I don't think it can.
06:48How far would it come out here?
06:49Because it's too big.
06:50We'll have to relocate the sink and dishwasher from this wall into the island, so it'll be too wide and too long, and it's going to wind up getting pinched over here.
07:00Okay.
07:00Without the walls, the shiplap just ends, so maybe you just do it in the whole room.
07:06I think that makes the most sense.
07:07Perfect.
07:07Personally.
07:08Okay.
07:08Do you have any concerns with those being the only two windows in this space, with all the natural light that we have?
07:16Well, you're still going to have windows in the living room.
07:19Okay.
07:20But we could swap those out for larger floor-to-ceiling windows, just getting as much natural light in the new living room as we can.
07:28Okay.
07:28But when you think about how you want the new living room to feel, what are your thoughts?
07:34I think really comfy, where people can lounge, a lot of seating.
07:38Because you're concerned about the light, I think light and airy would be good for that room.
07:44Are you guys aligned with that?
07:45Yes.
07:46Okay, I feel really good.
07:47You feel good?
07:48Yeah, yeah.
07:49Let me ask one other thing.
07:51The extra bedroom's got to go out on that porch, because that's the only place left.
07:55But who's this bedroom going to be for?
07:57It's going to be for our 13-year-old Baylor.
07:59Shouldn't Baylor be part of this conversation?
08:01Yeah, she's here.
08:02I can grab her if you want me to.
08:03Oh, great.
08:04While she's doing that, I'll take you out of the porch.
08:06Okay, let's do it.
08:08These clients, they're not our hot pink dining room clients.
08:12They're a little bit...
08:12Not everyone is.
08:13Most people are not.
08:15They like color, but they're a little bit more subdued than some of the homes that we've
08:19been in the past.
08:20Not a problem for me.
08:21I'm not in charge of color, so...
08:23You're very colorful today, though.
08:25Yeah.
08:26This is a screened-in porch.
08:28All right.
08:29We love this space, but it's just an area that we have not utilized.
08:33Baylor, this is your room.
08:34How do you want the room to feel when it's done?
08:36I like light blues.
08:38You like light blues?
08:39Okay.
08:40Kind of just basic colors.
08:41Okay.
08:42Like a built-in desk area where I can do homework and shelves.
08:49Okay.
08:50This is the simplest thing I've ever done in my life.
08:52Okay, well, you go.
08:53Take the lead.
08:54On one of the walls, do built-ins with plenty of shelves and a desk.
08:58Once you put a bed and dresser in there, that's that.
09:01Okay, done.
09:02Oh, so now it's easy?
09:04Easy peasy.
09:06Okay, so you guys have any reservations?
09:08Yeah, we're ready to go.
09:10I know I would have some if I were you.
09:12So are you ready to hand us over the key to your house?
09:16It's all yours.
09:18All right, guys, so we'll see you in four months.
09:20Okay.
09:21Okay?
09:21With them, we're going to go for something more subdued than our typical client,
09:26but I still feel like we're going to be able to make it beautiful, colorful, and visually interesting
09:32that really fits, like, the whole vibe and feel of downtown Charleston.
09:37I have no doubt you'll pull it off.
09:39Thanks, Dad.
09:40So today we get started with construction.
09:55So the roof's coming off.
09:57The superstructure of the deck has now all been removed.
10:01They've laid up almost all the foundation piers.
10:05Then they'll be ready to frame this thing up.
10:07The crew have been working very hard at framing the addition here at Herderick.
10:24We only have four months to get this project done in order to get the Herdericks back in
10:28the house before Baylor goes back to school.
10:31Good morning, sweetie.
10:32Hi, Dad.
10:33I'm at Herderick's.
10:35We're all framed up.
10:36The roof is going on right now.
10:38That's amazing.
10:39You want to see there.
10:42Wow.
10:43Yeah.
10:44I know that one of Lauren's primary concerns was whether or not we have enough light in
10:49the kitchen, but now that I see these openings framed up, we can see how much light is coming
10:55in.
10:55I'm not worried about it.
10:56I think we'll be fine.
10:57Well, go ahead.
10:58She'll be in the leaves.
11:00Yep.
11:00That's all I've got from Lake Wolf Gone.
11:03Okay.
11:03Bye.
11:04Bye-bye.
11:05Bye-bye.
11:25Right now, the addition is just that.
11:28It's an addition.
11:29When the wall comes down between the addition and the kitchen, it now becomes part of the
11:33entire house.
11:34So now we're going to see how these spaces live and work together and complement each other.
11:40Well, good morning, Tripp.
11:41Good morning.
11:42How you doing?
11:43Great.
11:43How are you?
11:44I'm all right.
11:44Good to see you.
11:45Can I survive the drive in this morning?
11:46Yes, sir.
11:47This is a big day for the kitchen, huh?
11:49Yeah.
11:49We're going to tear this wall out of here.
11:50Open up.
11:51Lauren, having lived in that kitchen with that big bank of windows outside of her kitchen
11:55sink all this time.
11:57Right.
11:57She's been concerned about how much light she's going to have in that kitchen once this is
12:02added.
12:02So a big tell today will be we'll get this wall out of here between the kitchen and here.
12:07It's going to give the kitchen more light.
12:09So I'm looking forward to getting that open up.
12:12We'll see what we've got.
12:12Be nice to see.
12:14Yes, sir.
12:14Yep.
12:25The crew's doing a fine job taking the walls down, but I don't think they should have
12:29all the fun.
12:40There.
12:40This didn't go away.
12:41As soon as we started taking this wall down, I could tell that we're going to be right
12:47where we need to be with light in that kitchen.
12:49The west wall is filled with windows that will light that kitchen and make it a happy
12:55spot.
12:56So next week, drywall goes in.
12:58Then Gray and Chelsea can get inside that space and feel it and really get moving with
13:03it.
13:03I brought my bound bag.
13:11It's a designer.
13:12I love it.
13:12It's a new look.
13:15We have two months left to get this entire project and all five spaces completely finished.
13:20We got it.
13:21I know.
13:21So today we're going to go into the house and make some of our big design decisions.
13:26This design is, you know, slightly different than our norm.
13:29It's not quite in your face.
13:31This is more like subtle sophistication.
13:33Do they want this room to feel moody, lots of blues and greens?
13:37Okay.
13:37So this is like cool, a dole lounge.
13:40Moody man study with storage.
13:43With storage.
13:45Blues, greens.
13:46I already like it.
13:47Oh gosh, this looks very much the same.
13:51As a color expert, I feel like you can clearly see the difference.
13:56I know I can.
13:58This one is stone blue.
14:01It does actually feel different.
14:03I brought one more sample.
14:06It's feeling very light only, I think, because we're on such a dark wall.
14:11I think it feels very light.
14:13Yeah, it's so important to see the actual paint in the room that it's going to live in.
14:20Because I can hold up a paint swatch at my house or at her house.
14:25Or heaven forbid a paint store where there's fluorescent light.
14:28Right.
14:29And it looks completely different.
14:33Just, let's be real.
14:35This is not moody, moody.
14:37Like Navy is moody.
14:39Well, we can add mood with other elements, not just color.
14:42All right, this is clearly the better, darker option.
14:45It'll feel moody, but not dark.
14:47It'll feel cozy.
14:49The paint certainly helps, but it's also about the other elements that you bring into the space.
14:54You know.
14:55These are some upholstery fabrics that we could use.
14:58It's the feeling.
14:58The furnishings and the antiques and the fabrics.
15:03It's the layers that you apply to a room.
15:05I feel like one of the key things when you want a space to feel cozy is to, for me, is never leave the ceiling white.
15:15You want to bring that color up on to the ceiling.
15:19Like, you want to feel like you're, like, in a cocoon.
15:23It's supposed to be a masculine room.
15:25Built-in book shelving on this wall with a built-in desk.
15:29Sofa.
15:30Drapes.
15:30Funky art.
15:31Funky art.
15:32Coffee table.
15:33Chair.
15:34Pool rug.
15:35Okay.
15:35So, dining room?
15:37Okay.
15:39Okay.
15:40The homeowner actually found this wallpaper.
15:42So, I'm glad, because that's stunning.
15:44I'm going to go ahead and firmly state that if this wallpaper is official now, this is going to be the coolest room in the house.
15:52It's going to be good.
15:53It's going to be good.
15:54Well, like, the easiest answer here, and sometimes the easiest is the best, would be to carry trim.
16:00The two rooms are definitely going to touch.
16:03So, with that being so bold, it's...
16:05Well, there will be a door here.
16:07Yeah, but it'll be open a lot, and the trim will be on either side of this.
16:10I agree.
16:10Let's try that color.
16:11These two rooms are going to be very functionally different.
16:15One is cozy.
16:17It's a study.
16:18The other one is a dining room.
16:20It's more formal.
16:21The fact that they are sitting here smacked up against each other, there needs to be something that ties these very different spaces together.
16:29And one of those things can easily just be paint.
16:32We always talk about how the rooms talk to one another.
16:35This is one of the ways you can maybe whisper a little bit without fully committing to that one color.
16:41Oh, gosh.
16:45They could all work.
16:45What are you doing?
16:46I can't look at them all at the same time.
16:48I need to, like, have this moment, and then this moment, and that moment.
16:53Okay.
16:54I like both of these.
16:55I like the...
16:55I like both of those.
16:57I think this one allows the wallpaper to be the center of attention.
17:03This one is, like, more contrasty.
17:07This feels right to me.
17:09It pulls in the paint from that space and really lets the wallpaper shine.
17:13So, decision made.
17:14We're going with the same blue as in the study.
17:17I love that.
17:18Okay.
17:18So, we're going to give her the wallpaper of her dreams.
17:21We're going to go with the same trim color as we're doing in the study to allow the wallpaper to shine.
17:27Take this chandelier, move it into the study, find something that has more bulbs.
17:33Get a nice round table, console, art.
17:36Leave these windows open.
17:38You can allow lots of light.
17:39Yes.
17:39Bing, bing, boom.
17:41Let's go.
17:42Kitchen?
17:42Yes.
17:51The addition is dried in.
17:53We've got walls and ceilings, and we can get in there and do our thing now.
17:57Okay.
17:59So, this room, extension of the kitchen.
18:02It's going to have to work with the current cabinetry.
18:04This kitchen is obviously very white.
18:06There's a lot of white in the kitchen.
18:08Yes.
18:08There is a lot of white.
18:10But I feel like with this new storage piece that we're going to add, it's a great opportunity to add a pop of color.
18:17Yeah.
18:17So, let's just test it out.
18:20Okay.
18:21I was preparing for you to say the pink.
18:23No.
18:23Okay.
18:24This one.
18:25This is going to be our only paint pop.
18:27Pink might be taking it too far.
18:30For this space, because there's nothing else in this room or any of the ones that touch it that call to that.
18:36Let's do this one.
18:37We're for sure going to go green.
18:38I'm thinking we need some Roman shades, obviously, with fabric.
18:44It's not quite.
18:46Is it too sweet, though, with that very moody dining room?
18:49It could be.
18:51It could be.
18:52It's a very, it's definitely a vibe change.
18:54I mean, I'm seeing this other one you pulled right here.
18:57I really love that.
18:58That color is exactly the same color as the storage cabinetry.
19:02Right.
19:03Okay.
19:03Love it.
19:04So, walls will match the rest of the kitchen.
19:06Cabinetry is going to be this pretty green color.
19:09Roman shades in this gorgeous fabric.
19:12We're probably going to need to find a rug, some art, a round table with cute chairs, and a light fixture.
19:17But this room will be beautiful.
19:19There's a reason art galleries paint all of their walls white.
19:22It's a great background.
19:23It's a great background for everything else.
19:26So, that's what we need to bring into the space.
19:29Everything else.
19:29All the things.
19:30Yes, there's something we need to discuss in the kitchen.
19:34I think Grumpy and I are disagreeing on this, like, a lot.
19:37Yeah.
19:39Okay, so the big question here is, the big debate, the hot topic, does the island go horizontally or vertically?
19:47Grumpy says it stays.
19:50This way.
19:50Horizontally.
19:51You would like it to go vertically.
19:53Okay.
19:53Whoa.
19:54Just see.
19:55I just think it, I think it can fit this way.
19:57How are we even moving this way?
19:59I feel like the takeaway from today is that you are a beast.
20:05A very, very feminine, pretty beast.
20:07You're a very beautiful feminine beast.
20:10Let's keep this straight.
20:11But let's be honest.
20:11You're strong.
20:12You're a strong lady.
20:13There's Viking blood in these veins, man.
20:15Is there really?
20:16I've lifted a lot of rugs in my day.
20:19Will there be any overhang here?
20:22No.
20:22None.
20:23None.
20:23This island feels smaller.
20:25Okay.
20:26So there's going to be 12 inches of overhang here.
20:28I mean, yeah.
20:30And then people need to sit here.
20:34Correct.
20:35So we could pick this little piece of sheetrock up, put it on top so that you can see what it will look like.
20:39Is that what you want?
20:41Yes.
20:4112 inches-ish.
20:49Bring it out a little further.
20:50I would like to let Grumpy know there's plenty of room right here.
20:58I'm not fighting this battle for no reason, just to be right.
21:02I do truly feel like for the functionality of this kitchen, it's got to change.
21:10Let's go into the living room.
21:11This is such good light.
21:13Like, it's beautiful.
21:14Right.
21:14Yeah.
21:15So I feel like we can do drapes that can just open the whole way.
21:19Something to think about, though, too, is they want to reuse their existing sectional.
21:25It was really big in the front room because it didn't really fit there.
21:28They brought it from a different home.
21:30They have given us the opportunity to reupholster it and get a new slip cover.
21:36I do believe one of the colors that are available for it are in this fabric as well.
21:41Perfect.
21:42We need to make sure that when we're mounting these drapery panels that we go beyond the window.
21:48That way we have the ability to push the drapes back past the window casings.
21:53Yeah.
21:53And that right there is going to let the room still have all that beautiful bright light.
21:58But we get the layers of the drapery.
22:00We get the layers of the drapery without losing a minute of the light.
22:03So I think we can bring in paint on the trim, the one we just used on the cabinet piece.
22:08That way it pulls in the green from the breakfast room into the living room.
22:12And then on the walls, a grass cloth so it still feels light and airy.
22:17A neutral but fun rug, giant drapes, and a blue sectional.
22:22Yeah.
22:23Now this is going to be the most interesting room yet.
22:26We're going to move over to Baylor's room who is a teenager.
22:29Oh yes.
22:30There's a lot of rules.
22:31Designing for a teenager can be tricky.
22:35Because you want to give them something that they'll really love and that feels like them.
22:40But also something that will grow with them.
22:42So when we did the walkthrough, she said that she wanted it to feel very blue and white.
22:48You know, she didn't want to venture out too far beyond that.
22:52Okay.
22:52I don't think she really wants to do a lot of color.
22:56So we need to really work within those confines, you know, to give her the space that feels like her.
23:02Light blue and white.
23:03I think this one is too green, too dark.
23:06And this is the one.
23:08So we're going to do this on the built-ins.
23:10We're going to give her a desk that can also be used as a vanity.
23:13The walls are going to be white.
23:15Her bed is going to be natural with white bedding.
23:19But we're going to bring in pops of color on the rug, on the pillows, through the arms.
23:24I feel like we have a good handle on this house as a whole.
23:27I'm excited.
23:40As our deadline is getting closer, lots of things have been happening at Herder House.
23:45The rooms are starting to be painted.
23:48The new shiplap and trim has been installed in the kitchen.
23:51I'd love to go check out the addition.
23:53I've got the grass cloth with us.
23:55And I want to see what it looks like in there.
23:57Me, too.
23:58I know.
23:58I think it's going to be a really big deal.
24:02This is fun.
24:04I know.
24:04I'm really excited about it.
24:05Look at our grass cloth.
24:06Look at it.
24:08This, like, beautiful textured grass cloth is going to really elevate the space in a way that I think Lauren's going to be really happy with.
24:16You, too.
24:16This is the color of the trim, which is that molding.
24:19So we have three options here.
24:21We can go with a natural color that's just the wall, natural wall color.
24:25We can go with a buttery yellow color that kind of complements everything.
24:30Or we can match the wall color exactly.
24:33I know that originally we were just going to do white walls, green trim.
24:38But I feel like I want to bring another element into the room that makes this room feel a little richer.
24:44I know what I want out of these three.
24:46I know what I want, too.
24:48I want this one.
24:49Oh, me, too.
24:50Okay, good.
24:50I did not think we were agreeing on that.
24:53Really?
24:54I thought you were going yellow all day long.
24:55No, I want this one for sure.
24:57I think if we paint the trim a color with the grass cloth, it's going to, like, really take it up to that next level.
25:05So it's sophisticated but also fun.
25:07It's going to make it pop.
25:08I also found something else that I'm very happy about.
25:11And it kind of, like, I want to pat my shoulder.
25:14It's right over there in the kitchen.
25:16Can you follow me?
25:17I had a feeling we might be hearing about that.
25:19So, uh, look at this baby that is easily navigated around.
25:28You've got to make sure the next time my dad is here, you're here.
25:31I cannot wait to have him sit at this island and say, you were right.
25:37You want to rub his nose in it?
25:39I want, with, yes, with all of my heart, yes.
25:43Tell me this doesn't flow so much better.
25:46Yeah, it flows a lot better for this room.
25:48Translation, you can't wait for Grumpy to say you're right.
25:52I deserve a pat on the back because this is way better.
25:55I'll pat both sides.
25:57This is when things start to happen really, really quickly.
26:00Before we run out of time, though, we should probably invite Grumpy back.
26:04You want to rub his nose in it a little bit?
26:05I would like to rub his nose in it.
26:07There they are.
26:23There they are.
26:25Courtney and Angie are bringing their cute little van all the way from Alabama.
26:28I've been waiting for this for a long time.
26:31This is so fun.
26:33Hi.
26:34Hi.
26:35Welcome.
26:36How are you, guys?
26:37This is so good.
26:39We are going to need a ton of rugs for this house, but we are going to specifically design
26:44one for Baylor's room.
26:46Okay, so this is how this works.
26:47Everything here is available to customize in any shape, size, color, or dimension.
26:55Yeah.
26:55The front door.
26:56So as you can see, each of these colors correspond with the way the wool is actually dyed.
27:02This is a very unique opportunity for us to go in there and design a rug and truly customize
27:12it to Baylor.
27:14One of the things that we really need this rug for is to pull in some color.
27:19Let's go ahead and pull some of these colors for you.
27:22We want to use a lot of blues and greens and pinks, but we want to be very cognizant that
27:29we're doing it in a way that doesn't feel like a baby.
27:34Not childish.
27:35We have to be very careful when we pick our exact tones.
27:39Even though it's a little bit more saturated, because it includes all of her colors that
27:46are her favorite, this is the one that she's going to really love the most.
27:50She's a teenager.
27:51It has to be able to grow with her.
27:54Yeah.
27:54An investment.
27:55And like any good rug is.
27:58Yeah.
27:58Thank you guys so much for driving all the way here.
28:01Oh, my goodness.
28:02We're so glad to have you here.
28:04Well, on that note, I don't think you're going to get to go home.
28:08We're just going to take you back with us to Alabama.
28:10Oh, my God.
28:11Okay.
28:11Bye, y'all.
28:13Literally the only van I've ever wanted to be kidnapped in.
28:15Are you excited for today?
28:33Oh, yeah.
28:34Rumps, I have a feeling you're going to be extra grumpy today.
28:37We now have less than a month before we need to hand this house over.
28:41The painters are working on the trim in the new living room.
28:43But, more importantly, today we get to decide who was right about the kitchen island once and for all.
28:50Do you still think you're right walking into this house?
28:53We'll see.
28:53I don't know.
28:54I feel like skipping.
28:56We'll see.
28:58Well, yeah.
29:01A.
29:01Pretty island.
29:02It's no longer eight feet long.
29:04B. It's no longer four feet wide.
29:05It was never eight feet long.
29:07Oh, yeah, it was.
29:08They did not cut this island.
29:09They did not trim the island off at the end.
29:12It was eight feet long.
29:13Oh, my goodness.
29:14And you're saying they made it less wide?
29:15It's a single-depth cabinet.
29:18It was originally a double-depth cabinet.
29:20That's why it wouldn't work.
29:22What are you talking about?
29:24The island was four feet wide.
29:27You're saying they made it less wide?
29:29Yes.
29:30Like they cut it?
29:31Yeah.
29:32It's only one cabinet deep now.
29:34It's not a back-to-back cabinet anymore.
29:36That's why it works.
29:39Here's the truth of the matter.
29:40Lauren always wanted this island to be in this configuration.
29:47Yes.
29:47So did you.
29:48Once I realized that we could make this island smaller, narrower, and shorter, I figured out
29:54we could turn it, and we could have it the way you and Lauren want it.
29:58So I made an executive decision, made it smaller, and bingo, it works.
30:03My entire premise on whether this would work or not was based on a four-foot-wide cabinet,
30:08not a two-foot-wide cabinet.
30:09But does it look pretty?
30:09Can you say?
30:10It looks great.
30:12Just say, Chelsea was right.
30:16Oh, oh, let's go.
30:16Let's go get out of here.
30:17Oh, brother.
30:18Oh, my God.
30:19Thank goodness this island situation has been solved, because there's still so much to do
30:25before we can get them back in the house.
30:33Okay, kids, we've got three weeks to get the Herdericks in the house.
30:37We've got custom cabinetry going in in Baylor's bedroom, the kitchen, and the study.
30:44And that beautiful, moody wallpaper is going up in the dining room, and the grass cloth is
30:50being hung in the living room.
31:00We are down to the final hours, and there is so much to get done today.
31:06The challenge this whole time has been that the Herderick style is a lot more classic and subdued,
31:13but they hired us because they still want it to feel colorful and fun.
31:21Okay, let's get to hanging.
31:23I'm guessing artwork is where I come in.
31:26As in, you don't want me to paint it, you want me to hang it.
31:29Yes.
31:29Thank you for gracing us with your presence, but it's art time.
31:39Can you stand back and see?
31:41It's too small.
31:42I wasn't asking you.
31:44Well, I'm telling you, it's too small.
31:46It feels a little grumped, like you don't actually want to hang the art.
31:50Oh, you're measuring.
31:52Measure once.
31:53Nail twice.
31:54All right, there we go.
31:58It's perfect now.
32:00But we got it hung eventually.
32:02This countertop, the butcher block that you got in here, looks so good.
32:07You know, we got these knobs that originally we were going to paint, but now I kind of feel
32:13like don't paint them.
32:14I know.
32:14I love that it, like, because it's basically the same tone, and I think that's really fun.
32:20Now that we have the butcher block, and it looks so good, I feel like this is a great
32:25opportunity to add some, like, real visual interest into a space where there isn't a
32:29ton of it.
32:30Yeah.
32:31And it's not color competing with other color.
32:34It's, like, natural elements.
32:36I mean, I really do love that idea, and I mean, there's no, there's nothing wrong with
32:39pivoting last minute if it's better.
32:42We have the rug down in Baylor's room.
32:45Yeah.
32:45Shelter Styles.
32:46And I think we're getting these people in this house tomorrow.
32:49It feels really good.
32:51I know.
32:52I'm excited.
32:54That's awesome.
33:03Okay.
33:04Well.
33:04Big day.
33:05It's the big day.
33:06I feel like this house, as it sits now, is going to work really, really, really nicely
33:11for their family.
33:12I'm pretty happy.
33:13We'll see.
33:14I think they're going to love it.
33:16We did it.
33:16We built a whole half a house in four months.
33:20I can't wait to see the smiles.
33:23Hi.
33:23Hello.
33:24Hi.
33:25Hi, kids.
33:26How are you doing?
33:26Welcome back home.
33:28Hey.
33:29How are you?
33:30I put a minute or two, but that's it.
33:31At the end of the day, we want the homes to feel like the homeowner.
33:37We want it to feel like them, you know, because it's their house, and this one feels like the
33:43heartaches.
33:44I know you don't like surprises.
33:45Yeah, I never like surprises.
33:48I like to be in control.
33:50I picked up on that.
33:51Yeah.
33:51As your hands are shaking.
33:53Uh-huh.
33:54So when first we met here, you handed over the keys to us.
33:57You know, we were charged with making the house bigger.
34:00Yep.
34:00Making it more livable.
34:01Yep.
34:02Creating another bedroom, and then kind of re-imagine the kitchen, the living area, and so forth.
34:09We've done all that, and hopefully we've done it to your, what will be your satisfaction.
34:14So, um.
34:15We really can't wait to see.
34:16Yeah, the time has come.
34:20All right.
34:22Come on.
34:24Oh, wow.
34:26Oh, my gosh.
34:29It looks amazing.
34:33That's incredible.
34:36Look at the chandelier.
34:38Yeah, you recognize that from the dining room.
34:40You can find things that you don't even think that you like, and then use them in a new
34:46way.
34:47Incredible.
34:48Small pictures, too.
34:49Yeah, and some family photos.
34:50Family photos.
34:51Wow.
34:52What an amazing job.
34:54And the drapes.
34:55I'm so excited.
34:56Do you love them?
34:57Oh, my gosh, yes.
34:58We spent the longest time having, like, very basic blinds.
35:02Oh, my gosh.
35:02This has been her biggest concern.
35:03I was nervous for you to get in here and find out if you like them or not.
35:07I mean, this is incredible.
35:08I think it looks great.
35:10I love it.
35:12I think, okay.
35:14We got a little spot here now where we can work if we need to.
35:16It just sort of feels like a period piece to me.
35:20It just has this all-enveloping vibe to it when you walk into it.
35:26God, this is gorgeous.
35:29You like it?
35:30Yes, I'm so happy.
35:30That's good.
35:31So happy.
35:33Okay, should we look at more?
35:35Yeah.
35:36Wow.
35:38Oh, my gosh.
35:40Beautiful.
35:41Beautiful.
35:42It's incredible.
35:43It is.
35:44Oh, my gosh.
35:46The wallpaper.
35:47It's so beautiful.
35:48Yeah, I did not think I would like any kind of wallpaper, so.
35:51Well, what do you think?
35:53It looks great.
35:54It looks really good.
35:55A round table was designed for this room.
35:58It really feels like an intimate dining room that we'll use.
36:02Yeah.
36:02I love it.
36:03I got the little bar over here.
36:04That's even better.
36:05Yeah, there's your bar.
36:06You know, a round table is the best for gathering people together because you can all see each
36:12other.
36:12Yeah.
36:12It's more intimate.
36:14Frank Lloyd Wright loved octagons.
36:16He felt like it was family that it put people together.
36:19Yeah.
36:19This room is like two-thirds of an octagon.
36:22That's true.
36:23There's no, there's no need for the shape of this room.
36:25Yeah.
36:25What do you think about the light fixture?
36:27I like the, the, the, the third really, like, really pops.
36:31And it talks to the wallpaper.
36:32It does talk to the wallpaper.
36:33It all comes together.
36:34It really, like, pulls in a little bit of red in the wallpaper.
36:37Yep.
36:38It's nice to be able to see through the chandelier into all of this amazing wallpaper.
36:43Yeah.
36:44I really like the wallpaper.
36:46It's so rich and deep.
36:47You feel like you could fall into it.
36:49It's like it tells a story.
36:51I just think it's going to be such an intimate setting, but it feels welcoming.
36:56Yeah.
36:56Y'all just did an incredible job.
36:58Oh, yay.
36:59I got goosebumps because I can tell you're really happy.
37:02I love it.
37:03You feel the same way?
37:05Absolutely.
37:05Love it.
37:06Okay.
37:07So, uh, we count this room as a winner?
37:09Yes.
37:10So, want to have a look at the next spot?
37:11Yeah, the most important spot.
37:13Part of the home.
37:14That's right.
37:15Okay.
37:15Yeah, y'all first.
37:20Oh, my gosh.
37:21Wow.
37:22I love this.
37:23It's so cozy.
37:24Ready for Mahjong?
37:29I don't even know how to play Mahjong, I'm going to be honest.
37:34I would like to learn.
37:36It's fun.
37:36And I love y'all's fabric on the...
37:38You like the fabric?
37:39I do.
37:40It's really cute.
37:41And now we've got all this extra storage over here, so that's great.
37:44Bringing in this piece here that almost feels like a furniture piece.
37:47It's beautiful.
37:47I love the pop of color.
37:49It makes us all feel like one big kitchen now.
37:53The bones of the kitchen are still here.
37:54The island is totally different than it was.
37:57Yeah.
37:57It's just so nice that this feels like a joint area.
38:02It just feels so natural here.
38:03Oh, no, it's perfect.
38:04There's such good flow.
38:06Yeah.
38:06I didn't think there was going to be any way that we're going to get the same amount of light
38:09by extending out the house at this point, and it looks really good.
38:13Yeah.
38:13All of these spaces feel like spaces that you would want to just spend time in.
38:19Like, it's just more inviting space.
38:23This space is incredible.
38:24I just never imagined that both these rooms would come together in the way that they have,
38:28and so I'm thoroughly impressed.
38:31Good work.
38:32Okay.
38:33We've got a couple of spaces yet to look at.
38:36You ready to take a look at one of those two?
38:39Let's do it.
38:39How about the living room?
38:40Let's go look at it.
38:41Let's go look at the living room.
38:42Let's do it.
38:42Shall we?
38:43Yeah.
38:43Go ahead.
38:44Oh, my gosh.
38:45Yes.
38:47This is incredible.
38:49This used to be the yard.
38:50It used to be the yard.
38:52Not that long ago.
38:53Oh, my gosh.
38:54It's so beautiful.
38:55What a transformation.
38:55Here's your new backyard.
38:57It's incredible.
38:58Looks a lot better.
38:58It does.
39:00And you get to go straight through to the back now.
39:02Not only is it open within the house, but also you can open the doors right at the end
39:08of it, and it's completely open to the backyard.
39:10Easy access.
39:11It's a lot to take in.
39:12I know.
39:13It's a new space, so it's not like something we're used to.
39:16Definitely very cozy with the couch.
39:18And this was the previous couch before.
39:20The same sofa, new slip cover.
39:22Wow.
39:23Yeah, it's completely different.
39:24I like the boldness of the curtains.
39:27I was happy with the way that they turned out.
39:29They tied in really nicely with the sofa.
39:32How do you like the grass cloth wallpaper?
39:33I love it.
39:33I love it.
39:34I love that it has some texture to the walls.
39:36Functional, comfortable, all the things.
39:40Like you checked all the boxes off.
39:42Yeah.
39:43I love the flow.
39:43Yeah.
39:44It just flows so naturally.
39:45Yeah.
39:46So you can see, like when people are cooking, that people can be in here sitting.
39:51Yeah.
39:52It's just beautiful.
39:53It's going to be a perfect spot for a party.
39:55It is.
39:55Yeah.
39:56I can't wait.
39:56And a lot of family memories will be had here.
40:00Oh, yeah.
40:02So what we have left is Baylor's room.
40:06Yeah.
40:06And I am excited and anxious to show you this because I know she is a teenager and I have
40:11a teenager.
40:12And I know that, like, they're very particular about what they like.
40:15Yes.
40:16And so we put a lot of time and care into trying to get it right for her.
40:22Yeah.
40:22We want to get your pre-read on it before Baylor shows up.
40:25That's a good idea.
40:26If you don't think it's going to be good, we need to beat feet.
40:29Okay.
40:29Yeah.
40:29We should be fine with that.
40:30Yeah.
40:30Yeah.
40:31Y'all go first.
40:33Y'all go ahead.
40:36Oh, my gosh.
40:38You're going to make a 14-year-old's dream.
40:44Oh, my gosh.
40:45She's going to be thrilled.
40:47So much storage.
40:49Here we go.
40:50She has a desk.
40:51Are there homework?
40:52The rug, we had custom made, especially for her.
40:56I had a good idea of the colors that she liked.
40:59Yep.
40:59And I wanted the rug to be able to bring in a lot of the colors that she liked into her
41:05space without being overpowering.
41:07It's such a good balance.
41:09I love the little pops of pink and how they mesh with this.
41:13It does feel special.
41:13I'm hoping it's something that is going to, like, really grow with her and that she'll be
41:17able to have for a long time.
41:19She's stuck with it now, so.
41:22Yep.
41:22She can grow with it.
41:23She will.
41:24It's so important at this age, especially for your space, to feel like you, you know.
41:29Having some just bold pops of color and the white walls, like, just everything looks like
41:35her.
41:36She's going to die.
41:37So it's going to be perfect.
41:39Okay.
41:39So it's okay then, hmm?
41:40Y'all have done such an amazing job, like, the entire house.
41:44Well, all in all, the house has been through quite a journey over these last few months.
41:49Based on what you're telling us, I think we got to the right spot.
41:52And so here you go.

42:13Oh, my gosh.
42:17I love the desk area.
42:20That's so cool.
42:21Seeing our daughter, Baylor, like, see her room was so special.
42:25She is very excited about it.
42:27Everything looks so good.
42:29Do you want to have breakfast here one day?
42:31We're going to have breakfast here in the morning?
42:32Yes.
42:33Yes.
42:33I think knowing how our family interacts and that we like hosting people...
42:39It looks great.
