A powerful tornado struck Brazil's Paraná State on Friday, killing at least six people and causing extensive damage throughout the region.

"In the last 30 or 40 years, we haven't seen a tornado with this force," said Governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior said on Saturday.

He announced a state of public emergency to facilitate rapid response and reconstruction efforts.

Authorities said 437 people were treated for injuries and about 1,000 were displaced.
