Brazilian town faces total rebuild after tornado destroys 90% of buildings
A powerful tornado devastated the Brazilian town of Rio Bonito do Iguacu on November 7, destroying over 90% of its buildings and killing six people, according to local authorities.
Tractors and excavators were seen clearing debris from streets as rescue and recovery efforts continued on Sunday November 9.
Parana State Civil Defense Coordinator Colonel Fernando Schunig said the priority was to assess damage and provide financial aid to residents and businesses to restore normalcy.
Winds reached 250 km/h (155 mph), classifying the tornado as EF3 on the intensity scale, according to the state’s environmental monitoring agency. The disaster left more than 1,000 people homeless, with emergency shelters being set up in nearby cities.
