00:00Hi, hi. Thanks for having me.
00:05Yeah? How's it going?
00:07Hi. So, cool bow tie?
00:09Yeah.
00:10I read the bow tie. Thick.
00:12Hi, Jenny. Jenny?
00:14Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you.
00:16Nice to meet you, too. I'm Lyle Lex here.
00:18Lyle? Lovely to meet you.
00:20Thanks.
00:21Hi, I'm Lucas. Nice to meet you.
00:22Nice to meet you, Lucas.
00:23This is gonna be pretty fun. I'm feeling good about this.
00:25Yeah, it's gonna be it. I'm excited. I'm hyped.
00:27Me, too.
00:28I'm pumped. I'm pumped.
00:29Let's go.
00:30Are you crocheting something?
00:31Yes, I am. I'm currently crocheting a vest.
00:33That's so cool.
00:34Nice to meet you.
00:35What's your name?
00:36Juliana.
00:37Maitreyi. Nice to meet you.
00:38Maitreyi.
00:39Maitreyi.
00:40Maitreyi.
00:41Maitreyi.
00:42What's your name?
00:43Conrad.
00:44Conrad? Nice to meet you.
00:45I know how to pronounce your name.
00:46Are you planning to burst anyone in Smash Bros?
00:49Whoa.
00:50We can put a wager down if you want.
00:51Whoa. Whoa. You seem really confident now.
00:54I know. I'm good.
00:55I don't know. I don't know.
00:57I think we're ready to go.
00:58Yeah?
00:59Yeah. Let's start.
01:00Cool.
01:07Luca, are you ready to open up the show?
01:09Welcome to the Assembly, a collective of autistic and neurodivergent interviewers. We are very delighted to have you on the show. Our rules are no subjects are out of bounds, no questions are off the table, and all might happen.
01:33I didn't hear that last part.
01:36Would you mind telling us about yourself? Thank you.
01:40Uh, well, hi. Hi, everyone. My name is Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Um, I'm 23 years old. I'm from Mississauga, Mississauga, Ontario. That's where I still live.
01:55I am an actor, and yeah, I don't know, I got a dog, I like video games.
02:04I was kind of looking forward to this because I feel like I'm going to get asked things that I haven't had the opportunity to talk about.
02:10I'm really excited to be here, so thank you guys for having me, and you guys can ask me whatever you want, yeah.
02:17Jenny.
02:18Okay.
02:19Hello.
02:20It's nice to meet you.
02:21Yeah, so my question is, when Mindy Kaling herself chose you out of the 15,000 applicants to play Debbie on Netflix teen comedy series Never Have Her Ever, how did you feel?
02:35What were you doing that day?
02:39Um, well, when she called me, we were rushing home because my agent said, like, hey, you need to come home right now.
02:47There's something that you have to sign, and it's like, there's a due date, you have to sign it right now.
02:52I was rushing home with my family, my agent's already at my house, she gives me the phone, she's like, okay, they're going to tell you a code.
02:58And I'm like, okay, all right.
03:00So I hold the phone, Mindy's like, hi, it's Mindy Kaling.
03:04We just wanted to congratulate you on the role of Davey.
03:08And I'm like, oh, okay, cool, thanks.
03:15Well, at this point, I realized I was being punked, but my reaction was very chill, because I just didn't realize, like, what was about to happen, like, how my life would change.
03:28I didn't know what was to come, so I didn't know how to react.
03:34Thank you for answering.
03:38All right, Bobby, you're ready to go.
03:41Sorry.
03:44Do I stand right there?
03:45Yep, just right on the yellow.
03:47You got it.
03:49Hello, I'm Bobby.
03:51Now that people know who you are because of your Netflix show, do strangers approach you, and does that scare you?
04:01Honestly, sometimes it does.
04:03There's been times where, like, people have, like, kind of followed me, and that's really scary.
04:11I do not like that.
04:12Creepy.
04:12Super creepy, guys, super creepy.
04:15Like, one time I had someone follow me in their car.
04:18Like, I was driving to school.
04:21This person saw me driving while they were driving the opposite way.
04:26As I was continuing to drive, like, look in the rearview mirror, and I saw that that car was now behind me.
04:31I park, get my bag.
04:33Like, I'm trying to get to class.
04:35And then this car pulls up beside me, and it's this guy being like, you're Davey, right?
04:42And it just pissed me off.
04:45Because I was like, I don't care how big of a fan you are.
04:49You've made me incredibly uncomfortable.
04:51And I don't know why you think it's okay to follow someone through a parking garage.
04:55If I was in your position, I would feel violated.
04:59I was, yeah, I was, like, angry about it.
05:02And I think the thing that I was most angry about it after was that even after that interaction,
05:08I kept asking myself, was my tone too rude?
05:17Thank you for that question.
05:18I appreciate that.
05:20You're welcome.
05:21Yeah.
05:22Lyle is next.
05:25Oh, hi, Maitreya.
05:28This is Lyle Lex here.
05:30I just thought I would say hi to you.
05:32Do you speak any, you know, which foreign languages do you speak?
05:37I don't speak any other languages fluently, unfortunately.
05:42I really wish I knew how to speak, like, my mother tongue fluently.
05:46Tamil.
05:46I'm going to say Tamil.
05:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:48I wish, I wish I could.
05:50I speak.
05:51What do you speak?
05:51I speak French, Spanish, German, Hebrew, Yiddish.
05:54I like languages.
05:56That's one of my big passions in life.
05:58Sorry I don't speak any Tamil, though.
06:00You know what?
06:00Maybe we can learn together.
06:01Yeah, right.
06:02And then add it to your long resume.
06:04Yeah, that's right.
06:04Yeah.
06:05What are your favorite plants?
06:07Do you like gardening at all?
06:08My favorite plants, I love, my favorite flower is peony flowers.
06:14So I usually buy plants and then I have them for a little while in my bedroom and then my
06:19grandma starts seeing them die.
06:21I don't have a green thumb.
06:23I have a green thumb.
06:24Like, I have 22 house plants at my place and I could go for the next half hour talking about
06:30different plants I have, but I won't do that.
06:35Luke is next.
06:39One of my favorite memories is going to see my favorite band Kiss in concert.
06:44Can you tell us one of your favorite memories?
06:46One of my favorite memories, I was in my second season of Never Have I Ever and I knew already
07:02that I was going to be, like, in Time Magazine.
07:06I didn't realize that I was going to be the sole face on the cover and it was, like, the
07:17first moment in my career I actually felt proud of myself because I struggled to feel
07:23proud of myself.
07:25I have the habit of, okay, accomplish this next and then, like, move on.
07:30So, Time Magazine being, like, I think the first Tamil woman on the cover was awesome and
07:40me at 18 years old was, like, signing it, also drawing mustaches on my face.
07:45Um, it was really great.
07:48It was great.
07:50Um, Andrew, you're up next.
07:52Who do you think would win in a battle between a gorilla and 100 able-bodied men?
08:00Okay, thank you.
08:01No, like, let's talk about this.
08:03Do the 100 humans, are they just going in as humans?
08:06They don't have any tools or anything with them?
08:08Just bare hands.
08:09Done.
08:10Gorilla.
08:10Done.
08:12No, 100%.
08:13100%.
08:15The gorilla's going to wipe out so many off the bat, then psychologically, the rest of
08:20those human men are going to be, like, just off their, you know, game.
08:23Are we talking about this day and age humans or are we talking about primitive humans?
08:26No, just a game.
08:26This day and age.
08:27Okay, never mind, never mind.
08:28This day and age humans.
08:29They're going to get out of there.
08:30Yeah.
08:30I think we should see all animosas equal.
08:33How much room is this area?
08:34There's too many logistics, guys.
08:37There's too many logistics.
08:39Thank you for this question.
08:40I appreciate it.
08:42All right, next up is Damon.
08:50Hello, I am nervous.
09:02I am going to slowly type out my question.
09:06Google.
09:07Google.
09:07Google.
09:07Google.
09:07Google.
09:20You are dedicated to charitable causes, led a protest against cuts to education, and
09:40are now studying human rights and equity.
09:42I was denied access to a full education because I am non-speaking and use typing to communicate.
09:51I had to battle my way out of a segregated classroom and was recently accepted to university.
09:59I am wondering what sparked your interest and where will you focus your advocacy going forward?
10:05Well, thank you for that question.
10:12I'm so sorry that you weren't able to get access to full education.
10:17That's so wrong.
10:19So it's really awesome that you got accepted into uni.
10:23That's so dope.
10:24Like, round of applause for that.
10:26That's so thin.
10:28One of the earliest photos on my Instagram is a picture of a protest that I did in 2019,
10:38which I appreciate that you took the time to, like, learn that because a lot of people,
10:43I don't think I've ever been asked about that.
10:45And a lot of my friends, when I, like, became famous, they asked me if I was going to take
10:49it down.
10:50And I'm like, hell no.
10:51Why would I take that down?
10:53It's important.
10:54And it happened.
10:55And there's already a digital footprint of it.
10:57So it wouldn't even matter anyway.
11:01Both my parents always taught my brother and I, if you see an injustice, you have to speak
11:06up.
11:07Like, there's no other option.
11:09With advocacy, it's something that I never want to stop.
11:12I know my parents would look at me and think, what happened to their daughter if I stopped
11:18fighting for people's rights?
11:19And all rights?
11:23You can't care about bodily autonomy without also caring about access to education.
11:31It's all intertwined.
11:40Thank you for your lovely efforts.
11:42I did notice your Insta post and was so grateful.
11:46Thank you so much.
11:50Thank you for taking the time.
12:02Gesundheit.
12:04Luca, you're up.
12:05All right.
12:06So I'm like a kind of like a cool kind of like person who indulges in like movies, wants
12:17to join the movie industry.
12:19Nice.
12:19What advice would you give for someone like me who wants to like be in the movie industry?
12:24My advice, because my career happened in a very unconventional way, if I've learned
12:31anything, never ever get down or hard on yourself because you're comparing to somebody
12:38else.
12:39And if you believe in yourself, you really don't need anyone else's belief.
12:42Well, guess what?
12:43I actually do believe in myself.
12:45Well, let's go.
12:46I actually have that.
12:46Let's freaking go.
12:48That's it.
12:49That's not calling me to hear.
12:51So you don't even need my advice.
12:54Yeah.
12:54I was just asking just to make sure, if you know what I mean.
12:57Julia is next.
13:02Julia, go.
13:03You got this.
13:05Um.
13:07Um.
13:14Learning to love myself after my autism diagnosis was a little bit confusing.
13:21Um.
13:24Do you love yourself?
13:25And what is the best part about being you?
13:32Do I love myself?
13:34Some days.
13:35Not all the days.
13:38There are some days where I'm just fed up with myself, you know, which sucks.
13:44But I have a really good friend of mine who always asks me to write down the things that
13:50I love about myself whenever I am feeling those, you know, unlovable days.
13:55I love my ability to talk to anyone.
14:02I think I'm really good at connecting with people and making space for everyone to feel safe.
14:13That's like kind of my superpower.
14:15So, yeah.
14:16I like that about me.
14:19Thank you for making space for all of us today.
14:26Margot.
14:27Here we're at.
14:29Margot with the cool jacket.
14:30I'm somebody that really benefits from receiving therapy.
14:35I'm just wondering if that's something you find to be beneficial.
14:41Honestly, I have never gone to therapy, which is like awful.
14:47I have gotten my friends into therapy, like multiple of my friends into therapy.
14:51I have been on their case about it.
14:54And then they say, so my tree, when's your turn?
14:58And I'm like, oh, get out of my car.
15:01The car rides over.
15:02Get out.
15:03Which is terrible.
15:04Like, I definitely should go to therapy.
15:06Like, definitely.
15:07And actually this year was the first year I was like, I can't keep ignoring this.
15:14Yeah, I think this is the year, hopefully.
15:16And if not this year, there's always 2026.
15:18Exactly.
15:20You have time.
15:21Hey, yo, you know, and maybe one day I'll tell my friends to not get out of the car.
15:25And I'll say, hey, actually, I got an appointment on Thursday.
15:29Thank you for asking.
15:30I appreciate it.
15:30Sure.
15:33Uh, Juliana.
15:46Oh.
15:48Take your time.
15:53So growing up, my parents who were still with me and all my grandparents who were no longer
16:01with me, including my grandmother who just passed away five days ago.
16:05I'm so sorry.
16:05I can't hear this.
16:06All of them instilled values of working hard and really loving and cherishing the time with
16:11your family as much as possible.
16:13And as both your parents are Sri Lankan civil war refugees to Canada, what values were emphasized
16:20in your family growing up that you carry and have shaped your life?
16:24My parents always taught me, like, always be respectful of everyone.
16:33Treat everyone with kindness.
16:35The moment you treat everyone with kindness, they'll treat you back with kindness as much
16:40as they possibly can.
16:41I also grew up with my grandma and my great grandma.
16:46So condolences about your relative.
16:50It's really hard when you lose someone so close.
16:52Can I give you a hug?
16:56Please.
16:57Can I give you a hug?
16:58It's okay.
16:59I get it.
17:09It's okay.
17:09You're good.
17:10Want to take a breath?
17:10I get it.
17:14My grandma still lives with me.
17:17I already know she's, like, at home cooking something for me when I go to Toronto.
17:21I don't know what I'd do without my grandma.
17:22No, I was the same way growing up.
17:25When I was in school, like, elementary school, I had the habit of throwing out my lunch.
17:31And my grandma decided I'm going to become a lunchroom supervisor at my Trey's elementary
17:39school.
17:39So I can watch and make sure that she's eating her lunch.
17:45And you know what?
17:46My grandma, Miss K, as everyone calls her at school, got a lot more pool party invites
17:51than I did.
17:51So she's Miss Popular, but I get it.
17:56Thank you so much.
18:07Mariah is going to get up.
18:17Mariah is going to get up.
18:21It's a nice surprise.
18:26All right.

21:05Liz and would you like to close us up for the day?
21:17So I just have the final questions for you. How was it like being interviewed by a bunch of autistic folks?
21:25Honestly, it was
21:26Even more fun than I thought it was even more just heartwarming than I thought
21:31It was everything that I thought it would be but like more your questions
21:34Actually require me to think and not be on autopilot
