IT: Welcome to Derry | Inside Episode 1 | HBO Max
Transcript
00:00So, this is day one of Welcome to Derry, and it's going pretty well.
00:14We love period. We love the texture, we love the change of language.
00:22Once we were done with the movies, Andy came up with the idea of going backwards
00:28to visit crucial moments where everything changed.
00:34When he never turned up anywhere else, he presumed homicide.
00:40That means murder.
00:42A lot of those characters we had to come up with, they were not in the book, and it was a lot of fun.
00:48Lily, Teddy, Phil, and Susie, and it's the story of them trying to figure out what happened to Maddie,
00:54this young, sort of slightly odd boy.
00:56Maddie, he's a baby. I think that by hanging out with him, I'm tarnishing my reputation.
01:01And why would he run away?
01:03Gee, I don't know. Maybe because he had just about no friends in the whole wide world,
01:07and the only ones he did have had to be paid to go to his birthday.
01:10Teddy is holding out hope that Maddie is still alive, and they're going to find him.
01:13Well, that complication at the end of the stand fight.
01:22Lily rejects him, and that's kind of his last straw. I gotta get out of dairy.
01:27Maddie, wait!
01:31There it is.
01:32The boy was last seen the night of January 4th at the Capitol Theatre.
01:39We have to see the event that kicks off the Pennywise cycle.
01:45Get in, before you catch your nothing cold.
01:47And it always has to be traumatic.
01:50Well, we're headed to Portland, so he hitched the right ride.
01:55The first thing Maddie encounters is one of those perfect American nuclear families.
02:00And that's not what he ultimately encounters.
02:05It's an inversion of that perfect early 1960s family.
02:08And that's why we wanted to have the mutant baby.
02:11You know, the attack of the perfect family.
02:15Radiation resulted in highly unusual birth defects.
02:20And it's a bit of a preparation that it does.
02:23Reminds Maddie of this horror before it manifests.
02:29I thought you said we were heading to Portland.
02:33And he loves working with special effects.
02:39Then many times we support them with visual effects.
02:42We had a real car and we had all the interactive light and all the backgrounds projected digitally.
02:46And then in combination with the practical lights, we were able to kind of get a very good match one-to-one with what we shot on location.
02:53Let me out! Out!
02:55O-U-T!
02:57O-U-T!
03:00EMP airbag system, as we start rocking it side to side.
03:04Looks like somebody else wants to get O-U-T!
03:09We had to make a false body of the mother.
03:14I was in the back seat behind her and my arm in the belly of the fake body pushing the baby out.
03:21O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T!
03:29The baby has an absorbed twin. He doesn't have eyes. He has one wing. All these things that are fun to play with.
03:36O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T! O-U-T
04:06The first time I read the script, I was hoping that I'd either survive for the entire series
04:11or die in a really awesome, gory way.
04:14I got what I wanted.
04:20It's the same incarnation as the mutant baby.
04:23He appears magnified in size, the same size that he had in the projection.
04:28And... go!
04:36And... baby bumps out!
04:41The idea is that the baby is the same size as it is on the screen.
04:47This baby is now six or seven feet tall.
04:51It needed to be 20 feet off the ground, so we had to attach it to a painter's pole.
04:55Two, one, baby!
04:57A motion performer on set that's kind of acting out the creature's movements.
05:03One of the first ideas in the writer's room was, once the audience falls in love with
05:10a set of losers, give them a bit of a quick exit.
05:15If the characters that are seemingly our heroes die at the end of episode one, then no one
05:23will ever be safe in this world.
05:25A-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I
