Sprint Qualifying Highlights | Formula 1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix 2025 Lando Norris will start from pole for the Sprint at the Sao Pualo Grand Prix, ahead of Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri.
03:16is on course to go fastest as Isaac Hadjar, tipped by many to be his team mate, next year goes second fastest, and Max loses out a bit at the end actually, only fourth fastest.
03:25Save a few metres as well if you can, you can save a car's length as the line comes up, and only second to Fernando Alonso, now there's a surprise.
03:35Yeah, not sure if Fernando Alonso being fastest was on your bingo card or not, but he is, 109.3 for him as Pierre Gasly goes tenth fastest, all the speed in the first part of the lap.
03:45He lost a little bit in the middle part, Oscar Piastri slots into third, less than a tenth of a second, separating the top three, with George Russell just outside that tenth in fourth place as he crosses the line at the track, of course, where he picks up his first ever win in Formula One in the sprint race here.
04:03Kimi Antonelli, his team mate, goes fifth fastest just behind him.
04:07Good chance of losing one of those in SQ2.
04:09Yeah, so after we thought that they picked up a little bit of pace, they're currently the wrong side with Lewis Hamilton of that top ten, and Nico Hülkenberg separating them, and there's only, well, it's less than a tenth of a second difference between Leclerc and Hamilton.
04:24And Leclerc with a big lock-up we were seeing there on the replay.
04:28This is Lewis, then what's going to happen to him?
04:32This is the corner where Leclerc locked up, and exactly the same.
04:36That puts you high, you have to wait, wait, wait, and then it puts you slightly out of position.
04:41Bit nervy, but he should be safe there, shouldn't he?
04:43But still a little bit nervy.
04:44Yeah, third fastest, he should be A-OK, you'd have thought.
04:49Bortoleto doesn't improve, I'm afraid.
04:51That front wing flap adjustment didn't work in his favour.
04:56Leclerc has spun, so anyone on a lap is going to find a double yellow flag in their way currently,
05:02and this could cost Pierre Gasly, as Leclerc now gets going, just in time, I think, for Gasly.
05:08Just saw him in the background.
05:11Hamilton's not got to the line in time.
05:12He is out of qualifying, and I don't know what Ferrari did there with the traffic situation,
05:19but as far as I can see, Hamilton's out.
05:22Hamilton 11th, and that double yellow flag was caused by this, at Magulio, Charles Leclerc.
05:28So he's on his way now to the right-hander, Vico de Pato, locks up once again,
05:34going into that corner, and then spins it around as he gets on the power.
05:38And that keeps Charles Leclerc in the top ten,
05:45because the double yellow flag cost others they were trying to improve.
05:49That was sheer frustration.
05:51Locked up, ran wide, thrashed the throttle pedal a bit,
05:54and around it goes.
05:57No traction control, of course, on these cars.
06:01Didn't matter for him.
06:03He did escape and survive, and does go through.
06:08But others, sadly, out.
06:10And for Lewis Hamilton, out in SQ2 for the second consecutive season here in Sao Paulo.
06:16The grip they need.
06:17It's the bit I like.
06:18Ooh, not that bit with George Russell.
06:20The bit I like about sprint qualifying,
06:22when you go from the medium to the soft,
06:24it changes the feel for the drivers.
06:25It can change the performance, the handling of the car.
06:28It's like a completely new formula out there.
06:31And George Russell just finding a little unsteady,
06:34getting into Vico de Pato.
06:35He's going to set the pace then for this eight-minute SQ3 session.
06:40Crosses the line 109.5.
06:43He goes slower than he did in SQ2.
06:45So what can Kimi Antonelli do?
06:47He's been going better of late, hasn't he?
06:50He's definitely gone through that difficult patch and driving nicely,
06:54and it looks like he kept his tyres better intact.
06:56Certainly.
06:57Oscar Piastri making up for things in the middle sector,
07:00but his teammate Lando Norris going even quicker.
07:02This is the man, the Australian,
07:04who was on pole for the sprint in Sao Paulo last year.
07:06He's only third fastest behind the two Mercedes,
07:09and there's a lot more to come
07:11in terms of times on the board
07:13as Norris goes quickest and on to provisional pole.
07:17That's great work from both the Mercedes there
07:20to currently split the McLarens.
07:24And this is George Russell,
07:25and that's his handling problems in the middle part of the lap.
07:27Yeah, his car is unquestionably not as happy
07:34on the softer compound tyres as it was on the mediums.
07:37So Lando Norris has got that banker lap in.
07:41Verstappen not happy with the pace of his car,
07:44and we're only going to see one lap from the Red Bull.
07:46We're not going to see two,
07:48so they think the tyre wear is going to be too severe,
07:51and that's where Oscar lost it in the first part of the lap.
07:54Red Bull think the tyre wear is going to be too severe
07:55to not match or better the fuel effect.
07:59When the fuel drains out after doing a lap,
08:02Hulkenberg is a little bit off the pace on this lap
08:05as he reaches the end, crosses the line,
08:10and the slowest of the six times we've got so far.
08:13And again then, Piastri is OK in the middle sector.
08:16Two personal bests.
08:18Norris has not done a personal best.
08:20This will be close.
08:21Piastri to the line.
08:22Only third fastest for Oscar Piastri,
08:25and Lando Norris keeps that provisional pole.
08:28His teammates' efforts have come to nothing better than third.
08:32Norris crosses the line.
08:33Provisional pole still his.
08:35Verstappen in the first sector, absolutely flying.
08:37George Russell in the first sector is absolutely flying.
08:40Alonso crosses the line, goes fourth fastest,
08:43and another fine lap from the veteran Spaniard Verstappen.
08:47Lost pace in the middle part of the lap.
08:49Only sixth fastest.
08:50Shaking his head in the cockpit a lot there.
08:54Max Verstappen has over the line all the way up.
08:58The slog up this hill.
08:59But he was on pole for the Miami sprint.
09:02He is definitely going to be on the front row for the Sao Paulo sprint.
09:06And he lines up alongside Lando Norris,
09:08who took over the championship lead last time out,
09:11and bags his first sprint pole
09:13in the first competitive piece of action
09:16at the next race here in Sao Paulo.
09:18It is Norris on top here on this Friday evening in Sao Paulo.
