00:29Tonight, we're in the City of Angels, Los Angeles, California, for the 2K Sports Network's broadcast of the National Hockey League.
00:37It's NHL hockey here on the 2K Sports Network.
00:40I'm Bob Cole, and with me is Harry Needle, and thanks for tuning in to tonight's matchup.
00:46I'm ready to do a celebrity watch every time I come to L.A.
00:49I know our cameramen are always looking for the movie stars to get them on the show.
00:54The Sabres have some terrific net bonding backing them up.
00:59For them, it starts in goal.
01:01Bob, the quality goaltending on this team provides the fans with highlight reel material, game in and game out.
01:07And when you combine that with their team's speed, and they are fast, you've got some kind of hockey team.
01:13Your goalie has to have some nights when he's not busy.
01:16If you've got a team that can skate, and you're helping your goaltender with those easier nights, you'll win a lot more games.
01:22Big saves, big games, championships, conference titles.
01:26Without the expertise of net bonding, you can't win in the NHL.
01:30And here's a look at our goalies for tonight's game.
01:33This guy's a complete package when people are shooting high to the glove side.
01:37It seems he's so confident there more than any other part of the game.
01:41If you try to beat him high in the glove side, you're going to lose.
01:45Biron has all the talent to become one of the better goalies in the National Hockey League.
01:50He's agile, he's quick, and he's very confident.
01:57They're lining up for the face-off to start the game.
02:00It's Ken Mara for your Wolfsheim, the Kings!
02:08The Kings get the opening face-off.
02:11And now the Sabres win it in their own zone.
02:17The Kings with the pass up the center.

02:24Oh, and check, Malik uses his pads on that slap shot.

06:50That shot was stopped by the pad.

07:12As we end the first period of hockey here tonight.
07:15The Kings have found themselves in a scoreless game so far Harry.
07:23What are they doing right out there or wrong in your opinion?
07:27They have not been able to get on the board yet Bob.
07:29But you can't say it's for a lack of effort in the faceoff department.
07:33Winning the draw and gaining control of the puck will only give them continued scoring chances in the future.
07:38The Sabres after the break now coming out for the second period.
07:43Really want to see that light turned on.
07:46Will we see the first goal of the game soon?
07:48We'll just have to watch and find out.

10:47But they are slowly taking control of the game by setting the tone with their physical game.
10:52If they keep it up, I think it's only a matter of time before they jump out in front.

13:20What's been the story here for this team tonight?
13:22You know, Bob, they've been very active defensively.
13:25Chasing the puck down, breaking up plays, and that's the way to win hockey games.
13:29You cannot argue with a strong defensive strategy.
13:32And I wouldn't let the fact that no one's on the board yet change the game plan.
13:37The Sabres know that the next goal could be it.
13:41Skating back out now to start this third period,
13:43I don't think they need to change much defensively.
13:46That's been working for them.
13:47Neither goaltender, though, has made a mistake.
13:50And we're ready for some third period hockey here tonight.

14:23Daniel Breer is really exciting to watch.
14:26Because he's a little guy and he has tremendous explosive speed.

15:03The puck is hit up the right side.

15:19Here come the Sabres with a chance.

15:44And that gets him a one goal to nothing lead here in the third period.
15:47Well there wasn't a lot of room.
15:50But the guy still poked it in on the right side on that wraparound.
15:54Gorgeous wraparound there Harry.
15:55The goaltender just wasn't positioned properly.
15:58No he wasn't.
15:59And it was a great job by the shooter to recognize that fact and capitalize.
16:07The official is going to get the action started again.
16:10Here's the face off.
16:17This is a great example of execution on the takeout.
16:45Not a big hit but a very effective check.

16:50Here come the Sabres with a chance.

16:53That's a huge third period goal.
16:56Putting them up by two here in the final frame.
17:00And it goes off the goaltender and ends up in the net for a goal.
17:03I know this happens from time to time Harry.
17:05But that fact certainly can't help the goalie now.
17:08Definitely not.
17:09Looking at this replay you can actually see the look of horror
17:13when he realizes that the puck hit him and still went in.
17:15There's a little period of time between that little top of the puck
17:18and the signal for a goal.
17:20And that period of time feels like forever to the goalie.
17:22And I'm sure it's accompanied by a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach as well.
17:26Here comes the faceoff to start the action again.
17:36The Sabres bought what they wanted.
17:46A two-goal lead here in the third.
17:48If they keep the momentum they have right now,
17:51it'll not be easy to come back against this club.
17:54He gets body checked good on that one.
17:56It goes to the point.
18:01Avery passes it behind the net to Belanger.
18:05Oh, and it deflects off the post.
18:08He plays it up to the center.
18:09And the defense has to go.

18:18Slap shot, five-hole, bang, goal.
18:21What a display of precision with a powerful slap shot right at the five-hole and in.
18:26To make a shot like that, Bob, you have to be in the zone.
18:30And this guy, man, he's in the zone.
18:44The official's got the puck in hand.
18:46And he's ready to start things up again.
18:51The Sabres are putting this game away here tonight with that last goal.

19:01Looks like a win coming up for these guys.
19:04Now this thing we're about to see is simply good technique.
19:07Have a look at it.
19:08The keeper is set and ready on this one, Harry.

19:15And he uses a stick well to defend against the shot.
19:18Yeah, he's locked right in.
19:19And this is a solid play on the part of the goaltender to deny them a goal.

19:25The Kings win the face off, trailing by three in front of this home crowd.

19:38He shoots it.
19:39And Jack Monick stops the slap shot with a pad.

23:19We talked earlier about how these guys were executing their game.
23:23And they were able to finish by a nice margin.
23:25How'd they do it?
23:25Well, this was a game for these guys that were just not going to lose.
23:29Sheer will and determination goes a long way in the game of hockey.
23:33All the intangibles that seem like small stuff can add up big
23:36when it comes down to crossing the finish line ahead.
