00:11stalin's formidable red army we were more and more convinced that we could do it two
00:21armored giants go turret to turret in the biggest tank battle in history
00:31it's just as if two bulls that run into each other
00:37defeat is not an option at stake is nothing less than the fate of the second world war
00:44in my soul i knew one thing and one thing only whether or not i die i would stay on

01:24brooding across the vast steps of southern russia this bell tower stands guard over the killing fields of prokhorovka
01:39a sentinel at the epicenter of what was the biggest and bloodiest tank battle ever
01:45and bloodiest tank battle ever
01:52operation citadel hitler's last gamble to turn the tide of the war on the eastern front
02:00since the beginning of 1943 germany's once unstoppable advance into the soviet union has come crashing to a halt
02:15and the red army is on the offensive
02:18they've pushed the germans back 300 kilometers
02:22hitler's hopes of ultimate victory on the eastern front seem to have vanished
02:28in the spring of that year he prepares for a massive counter offensive code named operation citadel
02:37his plan is to launch a large-scale pincer maneuver to cut off the soviet held salient centered on the industrial town of course
02:50the goal encircle and destroy more than half a million soviet forces in the course bulge
02:56leading the attack for the first time are the elite troops of hitlers praetorian guard
03:04three panzer grenadier divisions of the infamous ss including the death heads
03:11we were all under 20 or 25 and we were all faithfully german who believed in their fatherland
03:19for the attack the germans have amassed 780,000 men close to 10,000 guns
03:32and 2,500 tanks
03:35but the delay gives stalin the time he needs to prepare
03:41his strategy is to build strength in depth
03:47to meet the expected panzer onslaught they begin to lay mines
03:52and thousands of conscripts dig anti-tank ditches and trenches
03:55their plan to absorb wave after wave of attacks and bleed the german blitzkrieg dry
04:02in my soul i knew one thing and one thing only
04:10whether or not i die i would stay on the spot till death and i will win
04:15i would only be in one mood to kill as many germans as possible
04:25to meet the impending german attack the soviets mobilize almost 2 million men
04:3025,000 guns and more than 5,000 tanks
04:40the soviet war machine goes into overdrive in the months leading up to the battle
04:45what the t-34s may lack in firepower compared to the newer german rivals
04:49they'll make up for in sheer scale of numbers
04:56and we had many of those tanks many
05:07i did not just like the t-34 i was in love with the t-34
05:12why? because there was no tank out there that was better
05:23i love it i'm in love with that tank
05:30the t-34 is the backbone of the soviet armoured core
05:34equipped with a 76mm main cannon and 47mm of sloping frontal armour
05:39the t-34 is a perfect balance of firepower and protection
05:51by the early summer of 1943
05:53the red army has dug in thousands of tanks
05:56and across the vast kursk salient
05:58they've laid more than 400,000 mines
06:01and have prepared over 4,000 kilometers of trenches
06:04finally they are ready for the germans to attack
06:07and at midnight on july 5th
06:10that's exactly what the germans do
06:19what happened was a sea of fire
06:21constant fire, constant shooting, constant explosions
06:25the sound was intense to the point of blocking your hearing
06:29everyone, all of us are scared of dying
06:32everyone, all of us are scared of dying
06:34that's clear to everyone
06:36but it's important to overpower that feeling
06:40overpower it
06:41in the southern sector
06:46the german blitzkrieg is spearheaded by the SS panzer grenadier divisions
06:50their mission to drive straight through the Soviet defensive lines to Kursk
06:54their right flank protected by the 3rd panzer corps
06:57whose first objective is to secure a vital bridgehead across the Donets river
07:02and to do it at first light in the face of murderous fire
07:05we knew that we were the first who had to cross the Donets river
07:19a water obstruction which we knew had steep shores
07:22and was quite swampy
07:24in front of us were the infantry and the sappers
07:41who had already crossed the river
07:43and who had suffered a lot of losses
07:46the Russians knew our intentions
08:00and had positioned their artillery
08:02and we were met with huge artillery fire
08:05artillery fire
08:16in the tank we closed our hatches
08:21and we were safe
08:23the sappers were sitting there
08:26only with steel helmets and a whistle in their mouths
08:29the water was as if it were boiling
08:34that's how strong the explosions were
08:37and they just kept doing their work
08:40and we crossed the bridge
08:42that was no problem
08:44that's what time was waiting
08:48but immediately after the bridge was a mine field
08:56there were anti-personnel mines that couldn't harm the tanks
08:59they simply shattered
09:01but the infantry wasn't able to follow us anymore
09:07our second company was to our right side
09:10and they drove over a field of anti-tank mines
09:13and the tracks of all ten or twelve tigers got damaged
09:17and the tanks couldn't continue
09:26on the right flank the Germans suffer heavy losses
09:29but nothing can stop the SS in the center
09:32they punch a hole 20 kilometers wide
09:34and 15 deep into the Soviet defensive line
09:37when the skull heads came
09:41they were afraid
09:43we had good soldiers
09:44we just had the reputation that we were just breaking through everywhere
09:49that we were marching and attacking
09:52regardless of the consequences
09:54and across the vast open steps
10:01the gunners and tankers of the red army
10:04must face the onslaught of the tigers head-on
10:07I was a commander of the 3rd artillery company
10:16in order to battle with the tanks
10:21we would create special anti-tank defense location
10:25that were faced toward the danger zones
10:32of course we always had to watch out for the tigers
10:38from my own observing station
10:40we spotted a tiger that was stationed on a high point on the field
10:44and was firing away at our tanks
10:47we spotted a tiger that was stationed on a high point on the field
10:48and was firing away at our tanks
10:51it just stood there
11:04and it would not let any of our tanks come close
11:07no matter what we did
11:09how we tried to go in from right or left
11:12in order to blow it down
11:22the tiger tank is the germans ultimate armoured weapon
11:26encased in over 100mm of armour
11:29it is practically impervious to frontal attack
11:32but it is the tiger's 88mm cannon
11:35with a range of more than 2,000 metres
11:37that makes it the most deadly weapon
11:39on the vast and sprawling battlefields
11:41in all fields of the russian stamps
11:44these soldiers in the tiger were very proud
11:47we had the best equipment that existed
11:49it was a good tank
11:53and for the very first time
11:55we were head and shoulders about the russian tanks
11:58in order for our tanks to get tigers or panthers
12:12we have to get a minimum of three four hundred meters
12:18and get them on their side
12:20you see the type of the situation we were put in
12:24and as the tiger tanks continue their seemingly unstoppable advance
12:30it is not only course that is now at stake
12:33but the fate of the entire russian motherland
12:36we had a heavy feeling on our souls
12:40we were contemplating whether or not
12:42we would be able to hold them off
12:44and hold the territory
12:46this is the modern day city of kursk
13:04an unremarkable relic of the soviet era
13:07in the middle of the vast russian steppes
13:11but in 1943 it stands at the epicenter of a titanic clash of arms
13:21this is where the world holds its breath
13:24and the fate of two mighty empires is decided
13:36july 5th
13:37hitler launches operation citadel
13:40his elite panzer divisions slam into the soviet defenses
13:43and the eastern front is set ablaze
13:46in a classic pincer maneuver hitler launches simultaneous attacks on the kursk salient
14:00his goal to encircle and destroy the red army
14:16the tankers of the red army's t-34s are given orders
14:23to advance to meet the german onslaught
14:25and shore up a desperate rearguard defense
14:28their task is daunting
14:30stop the relentless flow of panzers any way they can
14:34we were headed from north to south
14:45south
14:46and in the river psal
14:48where the small streams flow into it after it rains
14:51and created mini valleys
14:52we call it laga
14:56well my tank went into one of those mini valleys
15:10it's like a naturally made trench
15:13when i decided to drive over the edge of the trench
15:27as i was driving my tank up
15:29i saw a german tank directly above me
15:32heading down towards me
15:38i don't think i had any emotions
15:42maybe somewhat of a fear
15:44but i'm not sure
15:45it was so sudden
15:49the tank just showed up
15:51the only overwhelming feeling i had
15:53was to get rid of it
15:55to wipe it out
15:56or get wiped out
15:57every tanker knows
16:02the best place to shoot at
16:04is side armor
16:05and also at the bottom of the tank
16:10and only then when i got him with the second shot
16:16did the smoke start fuming out
16:23as soon as he wanted to descend i got him
16:29that saved me
16:31but you know there was always fear
16:33you can't take that away
16:35for a full week the battle of course rages
16:42although outgunned by the tiger
16:45the soviets have a seemingly inexhaustible supply of t-34s
16:49and hitlers master plan is beginning to falter
16:54the tigers of the ss continue their dogged advance towards korsk
16:59and the third panzer corps has been unable to break out of its bridgehead at the donets river
17:09leaving the right flank of the ss perilously exposed
17:16with urgent orders to advance
17:18what they haven't been able to achieve by brute force
17:21they now attempt by trickery
17:24a secret midnight thrust straight through the soviet defenses
17:28it's the bold and daring plan of major franz becker of the sixth panzer division
17:35he was famous well known and a valued tank commander
17:39who had a seven cents for everything that was eventually going to happen
17:43becker's goal was to win over as much territory as possible to reach our target
17:49others said let's wait for the daylight
17:53let's wait for the daylight
17:55but he said
17:56this is a perfect time for us to attack
17:59and he did it
18:02so i
18:04avoided the t-34
18:06one to capture t-34s
18:08were placed at the front as a sound camouflage
18:11according to martial law
18:14they had been marked with the german balkencoids
18:17but they had been covered with blankets
18:21i had ordered radio silence and no firing
18:24silently
18:25we passed the first enemy barricade
18:28moving by the deadly anti-tank guns
18:30which remained silent
18:32believing us to be one of their own units
18:35we were able to fool the rossians with the bubbling noise of the t-34s
18:40everything was going according to plan
18:45but suddenly
18:47the column of 22 tanks appeared heading in the opposite direction
18:51these passed my unit almost track to track
18:57but then six or seven pulled out of the column
19:03turned and pulled in behind us
19:05i ordered the rest to continue
19:11and placed my command tank which was equipped only with a dummy gun
19:15across the road in order to force the enemy tanks to halt
19:20he was bold
19:23he was a good commander
19:25we slipped out of our tank unseen by the russians
19:28sneaking up to the tanks
19:30we put magnetic charges on two t-34s
19:33and jumped into cover
19:39detonations ring through the night
19:41we fetched two more magnetic charges
19:43and put them in place
19:52the blankets were taken away
19:54and we started firing at them
19:56it was a great success for us there
19:58we brought down a lot of rossians
20:01the attack was then on top
20:09becca's gamble pays off
20:15with their flank now secure
20:16the ss swing right
20:18to mop up one of the last lines of defense
20:20at the village of prokorovka
20:22before their final advance on course
20:24but what the germans don't yet know
20:28is that five hundred tanks of the soviet fifth guards tank army
20:32are blocking their way
20:34and the biggest battle in the history of armored warfare
20:37is about to begin
20:38the steps of southern russia
20:53today a gently rolling landscape of wheat and rye fields
20:59in 1943 a battlefield offering little cover and no place to hide for a sixty-ton tank
21:12the ss panzer grenadier
21:26the ss panzer grenadier divisions have blasted a hole fifty kilometers through the soviet defenses
21:30and the battle of course is about to come to a climax of unbelievable violence
21:44the soviet fifth guards tank army has been held in reserve more than one hundred kilometers behind the front lines
21:51but fearing that all might be lost in the face of the german onslaught
21:58they are now rushed into action to the south of course
22:02and prepare to launch a massive counteroffensive on the germans right flank from the village of prokorovka
22:09at precisely the same moment the ss swings east also towards prokorovka
22:16neither side is aware of what the other one is doing
22:21and almost by accident the stage is set for the deciding tank battle of the eastern front
22:31evening july 11th
22:33from his command post to prokorovka
22:35soviet lieutenant general rodmistrov
22:37commander of the fifth guards tank army spies tanks in the distance
22:41at first he thinks they are advanced units of his own soviet t-34s
22:46but then he gets a surprise
22:48he took binoculars and saw that those were german tanks
22:53it turns out that the germans decided to carry out their offensive through prokorovka
23:00events have outpaced the soviet plans for a counter-attack
23:05now they must prepare to meet the german ss head on
23:18we had a very heavy feeling on our souls
23:22by the order of the main commander general
23:24we were to stay and fight to the death
23:27and not let the enemy take over prokorovka
23:30july 12th dawn
23:37the rumbling of tanks engines can be heard from miles around
23:41as 300 german tanks and 500 soviet t-34s prepare for battle
23:47from behind a railway embankment on the russian left flank
23:51savily ilyich commands a soviet anti-tank gun emplacement
23:55and at 0 8 30 hours is one of the first to spot the mass ranks of the ss advancing
24:02the entire field of prokhorovka was covered with moving tanks
24:10we are missing some sort of metro yes no watch we aim at the bottom of the tank or towards the lid of the tank
24:25if the little cross mark was resting on either of those points then the missile would go directly where it's aimed
24:33directly where it's aimed
24:44it wants way to the right or left
24:47it will go directly to the target
24:54the 76 millimeter gun would have 25 shots per minute
25:09and that's how you could battle with the tanks through direct aiming
25:16you were learning quickly during this war
25:19for example we were all able to tell the difference whether it was a heavy artillery or light artillery firing at us
25:27we were able to hear if anti-tank guns were fired
25:31every projectile made a different noise
25:39it was very important to recognize what was firing and where it was coming from
25:46and the armor-piercing ammo had a special mass inside it
26:04when it collided with armor it would burn through
26:08burn through and through
26:11the Soviet armor-piercing shell has a high explosive filler
26:17designed to pierce 55 millimeters of armor plating
26:20at a distance of 1,000 meters
26:23exploding on impact and destroying the enemy tank from within
26:27the tank would go up in flames
26:30fire would burn and that's what would happen
26:34when several of our tanks had been shot
26:39men suffered terrible burns
26:43a tank on my left side caught fire
26:48and they were screaming terribly
26:51the tankers who made it out
27:02had terrible burns on the upper body down to the belt
27:05it was frightful
27:07north of the railway embankment
27:11in the center of the battlefield
27:13tank commander Rudolf von Ribbentrop
27:15is in the first wave of the German advance towards Prokhorovka
27:18when the Soviets take the extraordinary and reckless decision
27:21to meet them head on
27:23what I saw left me speechless
27:36from beyond the shallow rise about 150 to 200 meters in front of me
27:41appeared tank after tank
27:44wave after wave
27:46there were too many to count
27:48it was a simply unimaginable assembly
27:51and it was moving at a very high speed
27:54and suddenly we're on the same path
27:57face to face
27:58they didn't expect us
28:00to come upon them so fast
28:02and we didn't expect them either
28:04the SS adopt the panzer kyle
28:07a wedge-shaped formation with tigers at the point
28:10and lighter panzer fours at the side
28:12their aim to use their heavy armor to bulldoze straight through the enemy lines
28:22Soviet T-34s lead a cavalry charge across the open fields
28:26to meet the deadly panzer kyle
28:29outgunned by the tigers
28:30their only hope is to get as close as possible
28:33as quickly as possible
28:35they probably thought we would be farther off
28:39but no
28:40here there were two huge masses colliding
28:43and at first
28:45everyone was sort of confused
28:47and dumbfounded
28:49at that second
28:51I said to myself
28:53it's all over now
28:58we started killing each other
29:00head on
29:05July 12th 1943
29:29in his pursuit of victory on the Eastern Front
29:31Hitler has gambled everything on the success of Operation Citadel
29:34and the metal of his feared panzer divisions is put to the test
29:38on the steps of Southern Russia
29:46in the northern sector
29:47the advance of the German 9th Army has ground to a halt
29:50still 80 kilometers short of its objective of course
29:53everything now hinges on success in the south
29:57where the SS have come up against the Soviet 5th Guards Tank Army
30:01on the fields of Prokhorovka
30:06needing to get within range
30:07the Soviet T-34s charge at full throttle
30:10against the advancing SS
30:15it's an all out fight for survival
30:17point blank range
30:19they probably thought
30:26we would be farther off
30:28but no
30:29here there were two huge masses
30:31colliding
30:32and at first
30:33everyone was sort of confused
30:35and dumbfounded
30:36in the first wave of the German advance
30:45is SS tank commander Rudolf von Ribbentrop
30:48my driver called over the intercom
30:50sir to the right
30:51right
30:52the gunner traversed right
30:54soon the first round was on its way
30:57and with its impact the T-34 began to burn
31:00at the same instant
31:02the tank next to me
31:03took a direct hit
31:04and went up in flames
31:06his neighbor was also hit
31:08we had no time to take up defensive positions
31:11all we could do was fire
31:13from this range
31:15every round was a hit
31:17I realized there was no chance of escape
31:20all we could do was take care of what was at hand
31:23the battlefield is a chaotic mass of tanks firing at point blank range
31:40for the tankers on both sides it's kill or be killed
31:48and so it began
31:49shooting at each other practically point blank
31:52hundred yards
31:54two hundred yards
31:56you did not need a long range gun
31:58you can just shoot head on
32:00no one knew the situation
32:02not the army generals
32:04not battalion generals
32:06not any of the commanders of brigades
32:08we were prepared
32:12we were young guys
32:14order is order
32:16and attack is attack
32:18but we couldn't know
32:20nothing like sis would develop
32:22and we were just unimportant grunts
32:24maybe the generals might have known sis
32:27but I don't think they knew that it might degenerate in sis way
32:32it was a test of nerves for people
32:44that's why at that age I got my silver hair early
32:48became silver heading
32:50by midday the entire battlefield has been set ablaze
32:56and become a hellish inferno
32:58the fires were burning
33:02the cars were burning
33:04and tanks were burning
33:06the field crops were burning
33:08everything was ablaze
33:10it was a horrid battle
33:12there are clouds of smoke
33:14as if it was a dark evening
33:16there's slaughter in the fields below
33:19and from the skies above
33:20death rains down in torrents
33:30everyone was bombing
33:32we were bombing
33:33Germans were bombing
33:35the Germans I don't think they had targets
33:37and that's all
33:39the carnage is indiscriminate
33:41death comes from every angle
33:43and it's the tankers
33:45who are caught in the middle
33:47a person is scared of death
33:51no one wants to die
34:01no one wants to die
34:03I still cannot understand how my tank got hit
34:07either it was a bomb
34:09or it was artillery
34:21but it burned
34:25and that's a fact
34:27and it burned because it was totally loaded
34:29with ammunition and such
34:31and we had extra gas
34:33all of that burns
34:35all of it is fire
34:37fire consumes everything
34:39I decided to evacuate that tank
34:53I said we need to evacuate lieutenant
34:57the lieutenant was burning up
34:59so he couldn't say a word
35:01my comrade that was sitting beside me
35:09opened the lid of the tank ahead of me
35:11then when I was taken out of it
35:13all I heard was the explosion
35:25I still remember this battle
35:27still remember it
35:31only two members of Prevel's crew escape alive
35:37tank losses are reaching
35:39catastrophic proportions on both sides
35:41but it's clear the Soviets
35:43are losing more
35:45with defeat not an option
35:47the Soviet T-34s
35:49attempt to block the German advance
35:51in whatever way they can
35:53including a desperate tactic
35:55of last resort
35:57never before witnessed in armoured warfare
35:59some of Sam
36:01had probably received
36:03some order to drive on
36:05to our tanks
36:07it's just as if
36:13two bulls
36:15would run into each other
36:17the battle of Korsk
36:27has raged for seven days
36:29and operation citadel
36:31Hitler's last ditch gamble
36:41to snatch victory on the eastern front
36:43is about to come to a bloody climax
36:45on the fields of Prokhorovka
36:47300 tanks
36:49300 tanks of the SS Panzer Grenadier Division
36:53and 500 tanks of the Soviet Red Army
36:55clash head-to-head
36:57on a battlefield measuring
36:59just four kilometers by six
37:01it's the greatest concentration
37:03of armoured firepower
37:05ever yet assembled
37:07and a desperate fight to the death
37:09the tankers of the elite SS
37:11have been prepared
37:13for the bloodiest of battles
37:15but this is warfare like no one
37:17has ever seen before
37:19and nothing could have prepared them
37:21for the kind of tank carnage
37:23now heading their way
37:25you have to imagine
37:35tank beside tank
37:37one big chain of tanks
37:39and on the other side
37:41were T-34s
37:42and some of them
37:43had probably received the order
37:45to drive onto our tanks
37:51each one wants to be stronger
37:53from the other
37:55that's exactly how it was there
37:56it's just as if two bulls
37:57would run into each other
38:03and that we our tanks were disabled
38:05they themselves couldn't do anything
38:07anymore either
38:09because they had disabled our tanks
38:11because once they were onsen
38:23you couldn't move the turret
38:25or anything
38:26they had never experienced that
38:28it was the first time
38:29that the Russians had driven onto our tanks
38:32that was their showstopper
38:41yeah
38:43except for some crazy things
38:45also stuff that they thought of
38:55with just an hour's daylight remaining
38:57whoever wins on this battlefield
38:59will win course
39:01and it's the German tankers
39:02who in the bloodbath
39:03now sense victory is within their grasp
39:06we were more and more convinced
39:08that we could do it
39:14I want to tell you something
39:16we weren't afraid
39:22so we just kept attacking
39:24and attacking
39:26the SS advances relentlessly into the firestorm
39:30the Soviet tank divisions are pushed back
39:32almost to the edge of Prokhorovka
39:34and panic now sweeps through the Russian ranks
39:42and we just said
39:44just like that
39:45the lines are splitting
39:46battalions are splitting
39:48army is backing
39:50and we were backing up
39:52the fifth army
39:54but the red army generals won't give up
39:58they send wave after wave of T-34s into the fight
40:02no matter how many T-34s the Germans destroy
40:06more and more keep appearing to take their place
40:14Rudolf von Riventrop is overtaken by the avalanche of Soviet T-34s
40:20at this point
40:22remaining stationary
40:24was the surest means
40:26of being destroyed by the Russian tanks
40:28just then
40:30a T-34
40:32halted about 30 meters off to our right
40:34I saw the tank rock slightly
40:36on its suspension
40:38and traverse its turret in our direction
40:40I was looking right down the muzzle of its gun
40:42step on it now
40:44I shouted into the microphone
40:46my driver had already put it into gear
40:48we moved past the T-34
40:52the Russian tried to turn his turret to follow us
40:56but was unable to do so
40:58we halted 10 meters
41:00behind the stationary T-34
41:02and turned
41:04my gunner scored a direct hit on the Russian's turret
41:08T-34 exploded
41:10and its turret flew about 3 meters through the air
41:12almost striking my tanks gun
41:14while all of this was going on
41:16other T-34s were rolling past us
41:22at day's end
41:24after 11 hours of butchery
41:26neither side has gained any ground at all
41:28the Germans and Soviets are back
41:30literally where they first started
41:32the battlefield belongs to neither
41:34the battlefield belongs to neither
41:36and Prokhorovka is strewn
41:38with the burned-out corpses of their tanks
41:40the battlefield seemed
41:44like a cemetery of armored tanks
41:46and technology
41:48on the entire field
41:50on the ravines
41:52on the edges of the forest
41:54lay hundreds of damaged German
41:56and Soviet tanks
41:58at Kursk
42:04the German blitzkrieg on the eastern front
42:06has hit its brick wall
42:08in the face of fierce Soviet resistance
42:10neither arm of Hitler's pincer
42:12has come anywhere near
42:14to reaching its target
42:16and Kursk itself remains unscathed
42:18losses on both sides are enormous
42:28operation citadel has taken the lives
42:30of 80,000 men
42:32and destroyed nearly 3,000 tanks
42:36but the Soviets have held off the Germans
42:38for the red army
42:40it will be remembered as a great victory
42:42the day after Prokhorovka
42:46with news of the allied invasion
42:48of southern Italy
42:50Hitler calls off operation citadel
42:52altogether
42:54to deal with a war
42:56which is now on two fronts
42:58the battle for Kursk
43:00is over
43:02and for the Germans
43:04it represents a massive
43:06and irreparable failure
43:08from these fields of Prokhorovka
43:10they begin a retreat
43:12which within two years
43:14came back to Berlin
43:16for our morale
43:18it was really upsetting for everybody
43:20what?
43:21they're going back?
43:22that doesn't happen to us
43:24we didn't shout hooray anymore
43:30in a single day
43:34in a single day
43:36on these killing fields of Prokhorovka
43:38the death harvested thousands of soldiers lives
43:40for many
43:42it is a place of sacred memory
43:44where the heroism of the red army's tank crews
43:46saved the Russian motherland
43:48this was the turning point for the red army
43:54I remember my friends who have passed away
43:58who have passed away
44:00I'm always remembering them
44:02I'm always remembering them
44:04always
44:06always will be remembering them
44:08my friends
44:10may they rest in peace
