00:00In this episode of Zainzia Day, I'm bringing you something really special from Noida Stadium here in Delhi NCR.
00:07We have already seen the incredible win of Indian women's team in the World Cup ODI.
00:13India clinched the victory.
00:14I am here to cover this special story by talking to the young people here in India,
00:19talking about what are their hopes, their dreams and their thoughts on the future of women's sports in the country.
00:25So, let's talk to some youngsters here and what do they think about the future of women's sports in our country.
00:32So, let's start with this little one here.
00:34What are your names?
00:35Ananya.
00:36What do you play here in Noida Stadium?
00:38Cricket.
00:39What do you want to become?
00:40Cricketer.
00:41Any motivation that you have that you want to be someone like this Indian women's cricketer?
00:49I like the best because they are good to play cricket.
00:54National team you are talking about?
00:55Yes.
00:56Smithi Mandana, she is talking about.
00:58How do you know that she loves Smithi Mandana?
01:01She has some posters in her bag and like stickers on her bag.
01:07So, she sometimes shows me that.
01:08So, I know that.
01:09Right.
01:10What's your name?
01:11My name is Kavya Aadav.
01:12Kavya, I've seen you here playing.
01:15Why did you choose cricket only?
01:17Why not any other sport?
01:18It makes me feel free and it's like something I love a lot.
01:25This recent win for Indian women's cricket team, this is not just about the trophy but
01:29also about the change in perception about women's sports in India.
01:34Have you had any challenges in your life when you asked your parents that this is the sport
01:39that I want to get into?
01:39Not my parents but there are my grandparents who always try to convince my parents that
01:47I shouldn't play cricket.
01:49It's not meant for women's or something.
01:51But now, if India has won, so it has proved that girls are meant to be cricketers also.
02:02So, have you talked to your grandparents after the massive win by Indian women's cricket team?
02:06Yeah, they didn't say anything.
02:09They said that you should go in sports also but you should have a backup plan also.
02:17Backup plan?
02:18You know, this is a common perception across players.
02:21Whenever I talk to people in sports, women in sports, they often tell me about the backup
02:27option.
02:28Why can't this be the main stream option for women, the main career option for women?
02:34For me, it's the main and I know that I will try my, I am giving my 100% and I know I will
02:42get something in my life from this.
02:45But there are some stereotypical people who think that women are a little weak or something.
02:52So, which makes them think that we should have a backup plan.
02:56How do you plan to break the barriers, break this stereotypicalness?
03:01Proving them by winning like just the women's did recently.
03:05So, we have talked about the challenges.
03:07How do you plan your day when you get them in the morning?
03:09How do you plan your training?
03:10My coach has told me about like if we come here, we should have something that like we should
03:19have planned something like now today I will improve this part of my training or this part
03:24of my batting or something, your game.
03:27And that's how I come with a mindset, like sometimes some like there are players which
03:34come blank that I will learn something.
03:36If you come with a mindset or a goal, you are more dedicated eventually.
03:42Also, talk to me about the infrastructure that you have seen here in Noida in Delhi NCR and also if you have
03:47visited other places, I'm not too sure about it.
03:49But, how do you perceive, how do you look at the infrastructure which is currently in place
03:54in India?
03:56It's improving now like day by day and I am loving how the, how our government is supporting
04:05and how BCSC is also supporting women's cricket, increasing the prize money as we saw in the
04:15last, last winning match that we, the women's got 40 crores and the men's get 33 crores or something.
04:24So, for you, the equality in pay is also very essential if one has to, you know, push forward
04:30this entire goal of promoting the women's sport in India.
04:35So, I have the coach of cricket team here in Noida Stadium, he's actually training the boys team
04:40but I'm going to talk to him about what he thinks about the future of women's cricket in India.
04:44So, you might be knowing that Indian women's World Cup team won recently.
04:49What do you think, how do you look at the future of women's sports in India, not just cricket,
04:52all the other sports as well?
04:54I think Indians, women's cricket and many, in many sports, women are doing absolutely great
05:03but they've shown their power in the cricket ground which advise us to believe in women's
05:11ability and it's an honour to watch Indian cricket team play like this and we appreciate the effort
05:20they put on the ground.
05:21But how far is this journey, do you think, recently, of course, there is a massive change
05:26in perception but what do you think Indian government can do more with regards to promoting Indian
05:31women's cricket or other sports of women in India?
05:35What more can Indian government do?
05:37Indian government need to really rethink about the scenario of the sports we play.
05:48Actually, we need more women's empowerment in the sports than any other games and any other
05:58field.
05:59How many women are motivated to get into cricket?
06:06What do you think, what contributions have you given on the ground level?
06:08Our kids are much better on the ground level.
06:11The girls are much better on the ground level.
06:16They are much better on the ground level and the athletes are much better on the ground level.
06:23So, I don't think that girls are less than young people.
06:28Our little children are much better on the ground level.
06:32But they are much better on the ground level.
06:36So, I think that girls will achieve great achievements in the field.
06:42They are much better off the ground level.
06:43The people will achieve great achievements of women's boat in the field.
06:53This is incredible.
06:55It's a private section.
06:57The Indian board of PCI has well achieved the interests of the boys' prossimoors.
07:03They are living equality for their overseas teams.
07:07It was very good for me and I should also do the same thing as I am not thinking about it.
07:16This is the BCI initiative, but I am not doing anything.
07:19Let's see what happens in the future.
07:22Thank you so much for talking. What's your name?
07:24My name is Vikas Srivastava and I am a athletic coach here.
07:31I was in the army and I went to sports.
07:36In the last year, in the year of India and Pakistan, I was shooting a gun.
07:43I was shooting a gun.
07:45The two fingers were cut.
07:48The right hand finger and the middle finger.
07:51I was coming to the academy and I will try to do it.
07:57I am ready to go to the army and do good sports.
08:02I am also a sports person.
08:05I am ready for fitness and I am ready for fitness.
08:09I am ready to go to the national level.
08:13I am ready to go to the national level.
08:15I am ready to go to the national medal.
08:17I am ready for fitness and I am ready for fitness, but I am going to go to the national level.
08:22We have similar levels to the national level.
08:23Our teams are going to the national level here.
08:27We have radios too.
08:28We have also participated in the army.
08:30We have end of the air force too.
08:32We have also taken good positions.
08:34Sir, I am talking about this because recently the Indian women's cricket team came to the World Cup
08:40and it seems that in India there is a change in perception of women's sports
08:45So what do you think about cricket and other sports?
08:48So what do you think in India what are the challenges that women of the country are facing when they want to progress their careers in sports?
08:55Because many people say that this is a secondary thing, main career is something else apart from sports
09:00No, there is nothing like that, the girls are supporting the girls
09:05Look at how good the girls are in cricket team
09:08First you have seen how good the girls are in wrestling
09:14And in athletics, you will see how good the girls are in our previous athletes
09:18They have done so good
09:21And what name is their name?
09:24There are a lot of girls who are taking a medal in the Olympics
09:30They are taking a medal in the Olympics
09:32They are doing so good
09:33If they get support, they do good
09:35If you want to say something from the government of India
09:37And what we can do in the field of sports
09:40So that women of the country can choose this as a main career option and not a secondary one
09:45I would like to say that sports
09:55Sports is like Noida Stadium
09:56We don't have a facility
09:57We want to do the kids
09:58But we can't get a coach
10:00We can't get a guide
10:01We can't get a guide
10:03We can't get a sports stadium
10:06We can't get a athletic track
10:08We can't get a synthetic track
10:10Like prices
10:21Now the White Mountains
10:22If it is for money
10:24They don't have to get a sports club
10:26In each of port
10:27We deserve to get one of the other thins
10:29Well, the tonight
10:32We are all eager to get the situation
10:34For experience
10:35Us
10:36I've read methods
10:38If you get the support of the public, then you get out of the way.
10:40And we do it too, but we can stay somewhere and somewhere.
10:44That's why we don't get the support in a proper way.
10:47Thank you so much for talking to us.
10:49What's your name?
10:50My name is Sapna Sirvastav and I'm from Sports Academy as a coach, a women coach.
10:57A lot of families do not support women to pursue their careers in sports.
11:02What do you have to say about what are the barriers that Indian women face
11:06in terms of promoting their careers in sports?
11:09Okay, so as a women's sport, look, there are a lot of barriers.
11:15Those who are the middle families do not support much, they also want.
11:20Money, which is important, is to increase anything.
11:24They don't get anywhere.
11:26What do you think about money?
11:27There is a little bit of mindset because when I talk about it,
11:29people say, no, this is a second option because there are seasonal games,
11:34there are seasonal tournaments, so they don't get money.
11:37So not only to start off their careers, but also to sustain their livelihoods,
11:41they need money.
11:42So there are also many problems.
11:44Yes, this is the main point.
11:47They don't get support there.
11:49There are many games, but what do they increase here?
11:53Why do they do parents here?
11:56Like the boys, like the cricket is,
11:57we can see that the boys are going to the cricket.
12:02If the cricket is a match,
12:04you will also see that if the cricket is going to the both of them,
12:09then the boys play cricket in the Indian team.
12:13So the boys are going to be seen as compared to girls.
12:15The media coverage is also very low.
12:17We don't get so interested.
12:19And as they have won the World Cup,
12:21their families will be appreciated.
12:25And as they will also be appreciated.
12:29So this can happen somewhere or somewhere.
12:33Somewhere or somewhere,
12:35one or the other can also be involved in the cricket and other activities.
12:42What should we do as the government of India or as the citizens of the country
12:47to promote to ensure that there is equality between both men and women?
12:51Other companies,
12:53the boys who are cricket,
12:56promote them.
12:58The boys who are cricket, promote them.
13:01They promote them.
13:02They put money without thinking.
13:04As compared to girls who cricket,
13:06they promote them from their competition.
13:11So if we look here,
13:12the main impact of the sponsor is the main impact.
13:15Because the sponsor is not going to be there,
13:17then how will it be?
13:19What's your name?
13:20Shreevashu.
13:21Shreevashu,
13:22we should talk about how women should go forward in sports.
13:26So tell me,
13:27how do you have all the facilities in your school?
13:29Yes, there are all the facilities in our school.
13:31But the sport is the timing and the month.
13:35The running is the way around March.
13:39And the other facilities,
13:41like the cupboard,
13:42the football,
13:43the football,
13:44the number starts.
13:45So if you play cupboard in January,
13:46then that is possible?
13:47No.
13:48So there are all facilities in your school?
13:50Which one of the facilities do you have to play in your school?
13:54Football,
13:55cupboard,
13:56cricket,
13:57badminton,
13:58running and swimming.
14:00Yes.
14:01So generally,
14:02if I talk about your school or class,
14:04who are the girls interested in the game?
14:09The cupboard and badminton.
14:11Badminton and cupboard.
14:12Do you think there are some girls like football,
14:15cricket,
14:16or male dominated sports?
14:18No.
14:19No.
14:20No.
14:21Not one girl like football or cricket?
14:22No.
14:23No.
14:24So what do you think,
14:25can you do with this factor,
14:26what is happening?
14:27No.
14:28No.
14:29No.
14:30No.
14:31I think that if we have taught a girl to play football or cricket, she will not be able to do good.
14:37Why is this a mindset?
14:38We have seen that the Indian women's cricket team is winning at the World Cup ODI.
14:43What do you think of your parents?
14:46What do you think of this reason?
14:50They don't throw their parents.
14:53They are afraid to throw their parents with school.
14:56There are coaches who give N.O.C. and parents.
15:00Then there is only one coach.
15:03No one doesn't leave.
15:05They have to throw their parents in the hostel.
15:08Do you think that the parents have a little concern?
15:11If they send girls out, they will go to the hostel.
15:14What do you think of this?
15:17If this mindset of parents and society is changing,
15:21they have to do safety and talk about women in sports,
15:25then what can they do for them?
15:27They have to change their culture.
15:29What are you interested in the sport?
15:31Running.
15:32So tell me, what is your top speed?
15:36I don't know.
15:39What do you think of this?
15:40No.
15:41Okay, thank you Shreshi.
15:42Let's talk about it.
15:43So what's your name?
15:44My name is Tammi Kaushar.
15:45Which sport do you play here in Noida Stadium?
15:47Athletics.
15:48Since one year, I used to play this athletics.
15:54In lockdown time, I have gained weight.
15:57So here I came for fitness.
15:58Tanmi, tell me, you gained weight during lockdown
16:01and that's why you joined athletics,
16:03so that you can lose some weight.
16:05But do you also want to get into sports professionally?
16:08Yes.
16:09Which sport do you want to get into? Athletics?
16:10Athletics, no.
16:11I want to play long jump,
16:13but because of my weight,
16:15I didn't like continue that.
16:19There are so many sports out there.
16:21Why long jump?
16:22I don't know why it attracted me,
16:24but yes, I like that sports.
16:28So do you watch videos on YouTube
16:30or do you attend events where you get to see long jump live?
16:34I didn't attend the event,
16:36but I used to see videos and shots of that long jump.
16:41Do you have any favourite player in long jump?
16:44No.
16:45No.
16:46What are the challenges that women in our country face
16:48so that they are not able to excel in sports?
16:51I guess that freedom.
16:53Freedom.
16:54Freedom.
16:55Freedom to.
16:56They didn't get the freedom.
16:57That they want to go for,
16:58like,
16:59they even,
17:00like,
17:01outside the Delhi,
17:02their parents didn't support or like,
17:04they say,
17:05what will I do?
17:06So I consider myself very fortunate
17:09because by chance,
17:10I actually met Anadi Barua sir.
17:14Thank you so much for speaking with Asianate News.
17:16And we are actually doing a program
17:18and talking to people.
17:19What do they think about the future
17:21of women's sports in India?
17:22Your comments.
17:23First of all,
17:24it's a very good question.
17:25It's very difficult to say to women's.
17:28Actually,
17:29we don't have a sports culture in India.
17:31In Europe,
17:32we have a sports culture,
17:34but India is very difficult for the girls.
17:38Basically,
17:39the Indian mentality,
17:41the parents,
17:42they don't allow to play the girls.
17:44But now,
17:46the parents are very enthusiastic
17:48to play football
17:49or any game.
17:50Now,
17:51the scenario has changed.
17:54The parents are very happy
17:55to send their girls here.
17:57The main basic,
18:00the problem is,
18:02we have a lot of studies
18:04in our academics here in India.
18:07That's why the girls or boys,
18:09I take,
18:10they do not come.
18:12the main studies.
18:14If,
18:15if any girls play for the school team
18:17or they're studying in school,
18:19they come after three o'clock,
18:20then they come into the academy,
18:22it's very difficult to play football
18:24or any game.
18:25So,
18:26that is the main,
18:27main reason for the girls.
18:28Men,
18:29girls,
18:30we have a lot of girls,
18:31we are good in,
18:32see,
18:33in,
18:34Manipur,
18:35school,
18:36and rest of all state teams.
18:38They have,
18:39we have a very good team,
18:40football team.
18:41I talk about a football team.
18:42Yeah.
18:43Bengal,
18:44Goa,
18:45outstanding players.
18:46The men,
18:47we don't have an opportunity
18:49to join the service.
18:50There is no,
18:51why they play?
18:52If I say,
18:53he's my daughter,
18:54I should say,
18:55why she play for country
18:57or play football?
18:58There is no opportunity.
18:59If,
19:00if the government gives 5%
19:02opportunities for girls,
19:05for,
19:06for,
19:07railways,
19:08or CISF,
19:09Bank of Baroda,
19:10any institution,
19:11government institution,
19:12they also play.
19:13But,
19:14we have a,
19:15I say,
19:16again say,
19:17we have,
19:18don't play sports culture.
19:19Sir,
19:20you have spoken about a lot of issues.
19:21First, mindset.
19:22Secondly,
19:23the support from the Indian government.
19:25How do you think we can tackle these challenges
19:27so that we are able to,
19:28you know,
19:29promote women in sports
19:30and choose that as a primary career?
19:32Because a lot of women say that
19:33this is a secondary thing
19:34and a primary will be something else
19:36like a government job
19:37or becoming a doctor,
19:38an engineer
19:39and sports will come secondary.
19:40Men,
19:41basically,
19:42if we go,
19:43get something,
19:44if you go for,
19:45just,
19:46just like a girls team,
19:47they,
19:48win World Cup,
19:49the government also give money,
19:51the rest of,
19:52all the countries,
19:53all the people,
19:54they are very happy to see
19:55and they give money.
19:56But in our,
19:57scenario,
19:58the,
19:59the girls are,
20:00play for,
20:01first,
20:02play for school team,
20:03then,
20:04zonal,
20:05state team,
20:06it's very difficult.
20:07They,
20:08cannot play.
20:09After 8th or 10th,
20:10they are,
20:11just leave the football
20:12and going for studies.
20:13The main reason is the girls.
