00:00I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me,
00:08and that in no other country on earth is my story even possible.
00:18Tonight, we gather to affirm the greatness of our nation.
00:24Not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy.
00:31Our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over 200 years ago.
00:39We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.
00:45That they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights.
00:49That among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
00:53That is the true genius of America.
00:58A faith in simple dreams.
01:03An insistence on small miracles.
01:06That we can tuck in our children at night and know that they are fed and clothed and safe from harm.
01:13That we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door.
01:17That we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe.
01:24That we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution.
01:29And that our votes will be counted, at least most of the time.
01:32For alongside our famous individualism, there's another ingredient in the American saga.
01:43A belief that we're all connected as one people.
01:46If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me even if it's not my child.
01:53If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for their prescription drugs and having to choose between medicine and the rent,
02:00that makes my life poorer even if it's not my grandparent.
02:03If there's an Arab-American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties.
02:18It is that fundamental belief.
02:23It is that fundamental belief.
02:25I am my brother's keeper.
02:27I am my sister's keeper that makes this country work.
02:30It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams and yet still come together as one American family.
02:40E pluribus unum.
02:42Out of many, one.
02:44There is not a liberal America and a conservative America.
02:47There is the United States of America.
02:51There is not a black America and a white America and Latino America and Asian America.
02:58There is the United States of America.
03:03The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue states.
03:10Red states for Republicans.
03:12Blue states for Democrats.
03:14But I've got news for them too.
03:15We worship an awesome God in the blue states.
03:18And we don't like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the red states.
03:22We coached Little League in the blue states.
03:27And yes, we've got some gay friends in the red states.
03:31There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq.
03:34And there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq.
03:37We are one people.
03:39All of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes.
03:42All of us defending the United States of America.
03:45It's the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs.
03:53The hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores.
03:57The hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him too.
04:06Hope.
04:07Hope in the face of difficulty.
04:10Hope in the face of uncertainty.
04:13The audacity of hope.
04:16In the end, that is God's greatest gift to us.
04:19The bedrock of this nation.
04:21A belief in things not seen.
04:24A belief that there are better days ahead.
04:25I believe that we have a righteous wind at our backs.
04:29And that as we stand on the crossroads of history,
04:32we can make the right choices and meet the challenges that face us.
04:36America, tonight, if you feel the same energy that I do,
04:40if you feel the same urgency that I do,
04:42if you feel the same passion that I do,
04:44if you feel the same hopefulness that I do,
04:47if we do what we must do,
04:49then I have no doubt
04:50that all across the country,
04:53from Florida to Oregon,
04:55from Washington to Maine,
04:57the people in this country will reclaim its promise,
05:00and out of this long political darkness,
05:03a brighter day will come.
05:04Thank you very much, everybody.
