00:00It's like a little airplane. It looks like Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas.
00:03It flies around. In my head, it was photorealistic, but I feel like hindsight is not 2020. It's
00:10something else. Hey, speaking of weird nostalgia for 20-year-old things, Sony has a new ad
00:17campaign for the fall that feels very reminiscent of just the PS2 era, like David Lynch directed
00:23commercials that are just weird as hell. The new slogan is, it happens on PS5, and it's
00:29these little commercials where basically there's one where these ladies are driving through
00:35the desert, and these dudes are hitchhiking, and she pulls up alongside them, and it zooms
00:39out, and you see that they crashed a spaceship. They were in the spaceship, and it says it
00:43happens on PS5. And I don't, okay. It's weird because it's these royalty, I think that's
00:52just some generic spaceship. There's another one where a lady wakes up, and she's in this
00:57car, and she's got a headache, and she's like, oh, what was that? And she looks, you know,
01:01she opens her door, and it reveals that she is in a giant tanker truck that is impaled
01:06on the needle of the Empire State Building, and it's just like, it happens on PS5. And
01:12I'm like, what game is this? I don't even know what that is.
01:14I know, I want to play that.
01:15There's a third one where basically these fishermen pull in this awful Lovecraftian-looking
01:19giant fish, and then a dude just cuts a hole in its stomach and climbs out, and they
01:23give him, like, a rag, and he wipes his face off, and it's like, it happens on PS5. I'm
01:27like, yeah, but where? What game is this?
01:30I mean, a good game that should happen on PS5 that has Lovecraftian giant fish is fucking
01:35Bloodborne.
01:36Right? I don't, I just, no, I don't, this is definitely, like, you know, it's just weirdo,
01:41like, you know, zooted up.
01:42I love these, to be, yeah, to be clear.
01:44They're fun, but I'm also kind of like, hey, man, you guys got some pretty recognizable
01:47intellectual property out there.
01:48Maybe use some of that, you know, like, maybe put, incorporate some recognizable things
01:53so we're like, oh, hey, it's that thing we love from the real, the real life, and maybe
01:57this is some, like, deep cut boss from a game I don't remember, but, like, it just, I don't
02:02know, it, it, it feels almost like, like a fake, like a fake video game ad, if that makes
02:09sense.
02:09I, so I'm actually, I'm totally fine with that, because I think that what they're basically
02:13saying here is that, like, these crazy stories happen when you sit down and play video games
02:17on your PlayStation, and I don't want to dunk on Xbox too much, but the exact opposite thing
02:23is happening with their marketing campaign, which is this wishy-washy, mealy-mouth, anything
02:28can be anything if you imagine it, you know, what do you want?
02:31Do you want your phone to, you know, you want to spend $30 a month to stream Call of Duty
02:36on your phone?
02:36You can do it.
02:37Do you have a PC?
02:39You can play games on there?
02:40Like, yeah, we know, we know we can do those things.
02:42I feel like I had a hard enough time when I was a kid being like, Mom, I want a PlayStation
02:46for Christmas, and she's like, what is it?
02:47I'm like, it's like a Nintendo, but it's not, and she's like, what are you talking about?
02:50You know, like, it's explaining to parents what a video game console was, or why I needed
02:55one, when they were straightforward machines, I could, okay, right now, like, Xbox is like,
03:02this is an Xbox, and like, is it?
03:03It's a TV.
03:04Oh, no, it's, yeah, this is also an Xbox, and it's like, what, it's, that's just the controller,
03:08and like, yes, but this could also be an Xbox, and like, I think it's, I, I,
03:12like, appreciate what they're doing, but from, like, a basically communicating what
03:16your product is standpoint, it's, it's, it feels really scattershot in a completely
03:22bizarre way.
03:23Meanwhile, Sony's in the exact opposite situation, where they've got, like, they're
03:26doing fine selling PS5s, they could just put up, like, the PS5 logo, and just say, like,
03:30it video game, and like, people would be like, yeah, I guess I'll buy a PS5 for Christmas.
03:34They're just putting up these weird, these weird, like, short art films.
03:36I love it.
03:37Yeah.
03:37Okay, whatever, yeah.
03:38I, I think that, like, one company being, like, anything is everything, and then the
03:42other company being, like, it's, there's one thing, you just need one thing, and then you
03:46can do it on that thing.
03:47If you want to be inside the fish, you can only do it.
03:50Get a PS5.
03:51PlayStation.
03:51You know?
03:52It's, like, every, like, for years, it's been, like, you know, Game Pass is going to be
03:55the Netflix of games, and imagine if Netflix had a marketing campaign that they were,
03:59like, this is a Netflix, and it was just a guy holding a phone.
04:02You'd be, like, yeah, I know, like, of course, of course, I know that, like, no, I, like,
04:08again, I don't want to dunk on them too much, and I, I think it's important that, uh, Sony
04:12has a direct competitor in this space in somewhere, right, uh, because I, that, you know, that,
04:18that good things happen when, when, when.
04:20Competition is good.
04:21I want, I want to compete with each other.
04:23The fact that, yeah, like, the fact that Xbox is effectively kind of pulling out of the
04:26console space and being, like, yeah, we, we make a, um, we make a storefront that is
04:31accessible through many, many means, uh, and if you'd like a console, that'll cost
04:35you extra, and, like, Sony's going to come out with the PS6 and be, like, it's, it's
04:39$2,000, and it, uh, it has extra rumbles now.
04:43No, I mean, you're, you know that, like, the one thing that they're truly still competing
04:47on right now is who can raise prices the fastest and the most, right?
04:51Like, it's one of those things where, like, Xbox is, like, oh, yeah, we got a pretty good
04:55thing going.
04:55What should we do?
04:56What do you think?
04:5630 bucks a month?
04:58360 bucks a year?
04:59Should we do that?
04:59And PlayStation's, like, we're selling a lot of these PlayStations.
05:02What if we raise the price again?
05:04It's like, man, you don't want to stop it.
05:05Please stop it.
05:06Just, that's-
05:07We've been getting a lot of focus group testing back, and people don't feel like
05:10they're stranded in the desert enough when playing PlayStation.
05:13There's also a lot of demands that people feel like they've been eaten by a fish.
05:17And, uh, yeah, we're really, we're not testing well with people who are, uh, scared of heights.
05:22So we need to do something that really hammers home that PlayStation will make you feel all
05:26those feelings.
05:27I do like the idea of somebody getting a PS5 and they're calling up, like, Sony and
05:32being like, hi, uh, so I got, I got the system.
05:35Where's the game where I can get my car stuck on the Empire State Building?
05:38I just want a big fish to eat me.
05:40And I want to befriend fishermen who give me a washcloth.
05:43Where, what game is it?
05:44It does feel like if they had just kept making Uncharted games forever, eventually Nate would
05:49get a truck stuck on top of the Empire State Building, and there'd be, like, a whole set
05:52piece, and it would be amazing, but you'd be like, dude, you stopped going up there.
05:56How did you even get it up there?
05:57What did you even get up there?
05:58Uh, this reminds me, I have, like, a grudge against Cool Whip because of this commercial
06:02they had in the 90s.
06:03Do you remember this one where, like, there was a cookie that had Cool Whip in it as, like,
06:06a sandwich, and it was, like, a chocolate chip cookie that had, like, M&M's in it, and
06:10it would, like, fly out of the freezer, and, like, I had a bunch of sprinkles on it, and
06:13it, like, flew around this kitchen, and I was like, I know the cookie can't fly, but that
06:17looks incredible.
06:17I think I hadn't had Cool Whip, but I finally had Cool Whip, and I was like, this is underwhelming,
06:23and not, and it does not come to life.
06:25Bless your heart.
06:26I love it.
06:27The Amazing Fruit CGI Bears.
06:29You're the reason.
06:31God damn, Nick Maia is quick with the Cool Whip.
06:33He's got the Cool Whip.
06:33That's insane.
06:35You're the reason they have to put the small text on the bottom of these commercials.
06:38I remember this commercial and being like, this looks so good.
06:41No, you're the reason they have to be like, the guns don't actually fire.
06:44It's just the G.I.
06:45Joe.
06:45You can't kill another G.I.
06:47Joe with it.
06:48The Cool Whip, just like, it's a flying, it's like a UFO, it looks like a crappier Kool-Aid
06:53man.
06:53Why do you keep calling it the Cool Whip?
06:55The Cool Whip.
06:55What do you want me to call it?
06:56A Cool Whip?
06:57It's a Cool Whip, man.
06:58It's like a little airplane.
07:00It looks like Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas.
07:02It flies around.
07:03In my head, it was photorealistic, but I'm, you know, that's, I feel like hindsight is not
07:082020.
07:08It's something else.
07:09Yeah, he's just crapping sparkles and M&Ms all over this kid's cookie sandwich.
07:12Anyway, that's how I feel about that.
07:15I think that, yeah, maybe it's good that Sony's just blatantly false advertising things
07:19you can't do on PS5, but you can only do on PS5.
07:22Sure.
07:23Yeah.
07:24I hope we get more games.
07:25I hope we get more GTA games, and I hope we get more games where we get eaten by fish.
07:28I think this sounds like a good time.
07:31Do you think there'll be any Cool Whips to steal in GTA 6?
07:34The game had some Cool Whips.
07:36Bloodborne.
07:36Is there a Cool Whip than a Threaded Cane?
07:40I think not, my friend.
07:43Take that, Simon Belmont.
07:44You playing anything good, man?
07:46No.
07:47Okay, that's fair.
