00:00So we're here today at Newquay Junior School and we've got about 40 7 to 11 year old children
00:06helping us break down these polystyrene body boards we've been collecting on the beaches
00:10across our town over the summer months. These things are really harmful to our environment,
00:15the polystyrene breaks down into little balls, a bit like the packaging you see at home,
00:19and we can see it here in the hall today, it's like snow across the hall floor.
00:24The fish obviously eat this material and it ends up killing them and it's really harmful to the
00:29environment but not only that it's a safety issue we've all seen people trying to ride these boards
00:35in our you know in our fairly ferocious waves here in Newquay and on the first ride they break and
00:40what we hear from the RNLI is that they are one of the biggest reasons why they have to dive in and
00:45rescue people because the board has broken or the leash has snapped and so we need to really end the
00:51sale of these things. We've been engaging with businesses locally invited them here today to
00:55see the harm that these things cause and I'm really pleased that there are local businesses here in
01:00Newquay that even offer these the the good quality body boards for for no cost to people to borrow
01:08rather than purchasing one of these awful polystyrene body boards but the component parts of these boards
01:12here today will get recycled by Keep Britain Tidy and turned into other products so that they don't harm
01:18the environment
