The people of New York have elected Indian-origin Zohraan Mamdani as their next mayor, while the Democrats also won two key gubernatorial elections. This decision by American voters is being seen as an early warning for President Donald Trump ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Across the country, the Democratic party’s “clean sweep” in key contests will energize party workers who have been under pressure since Trump’s return to power. Mamdani’s victory has also sounded alarm bells within the Republican camp. Despite attacks from business groups, conservative media, and Trump himself—targeting his policies and Muslim background—Zohraan Mamdani won convincingly. At 34, Mamdani was almost unknown in politics until recently. He surprised everyone by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic nomination contest and again overcame him in Tuesday’s election. Mamdani received 50.4% of the votes, while his rival Andrew Cuomo got 41.6%.
