00:00¡Ahhh, sí!
00:10¡Ah, ahí vamos!
00:11¡Estamos cantando!
00:16Es como estar en una 1950s parámetros de parámetros.
00:19Es genial.
No te pierdas.
01:20¡Vamos!
01:21¿Quieres un foto?
01:22¡Sí!
01:23¡Sorry!
01:26Ven, ven, ven, ven!
01:28We're hunting down some of the world's most iconic cars.
01:31¡Doesn't get much better than this!
01:35Oh, I can't believe we're standing here in front of an SP2.
01:38Leaning on local wheeler dealers.
01:41Because he really wants it, would you take 30,000 euros?
01:44No, impossible.
01:45¡No!
01:46¡No, no, no, no, no!
01:47...to rescu these national treasures on a wheel and a prayer.
01:51¡Please let me find a set of wheels!
01:53¡That's all I'm asking for!
01:55...and make a few euros, pesos...
01:57¡I think we have a deal!
01:58...and real as we go.
02:01¡I absolutely love it!
02:15I do like the city of Prague.
02:22They drink more beer per capita than anywhere else on the planet, so I like that.
02:26That's quite a claim to fame, isn't it?
02:28I love this place as well. It's got great architecture.
02:30It's also got great cars, which is why we're here.
02:33I once went into a petrol station.
02:36I said, you've got a petrol cap for a Skoda?
02:38And he went, yeah, okay, seems like a fair swap.
02:41So what do you call a Skoda at the top of the hill?
02:44A miracle.
02:45What do you call a conversable Skoda?
02:47Skip.
02:48Yeah, some of those are really cruel and unfounded,
02:51because Skoda have always made fantastic cars.
02:54I mean, we're in one now and this is like the state of the art.
02:57But the car we're here to come and see is an absolute legend
03:02and I can't wait to get stuck into it.
03:05Launched in 1970, the 110R was a game changer for Skoda.
03:10Its sleek coupe styling was a radical departure from the company's usual boxy saloons.
03:16And with its engine in the back, the 110R earned the nickname the Porsche of the East.
03:23But in 1975, Skoda modified the car, reducing the weight and upgrading the engine to go racing.
03:32Transformed into the 130RS, it took the motorsport world by storm with a famous victory at the 1977 Monte Carlo Rally.
03:42Try doing that in a skip.
03:45So we're on our way to go and see a guy called Petter.
03:49He's got a Skoda 110R, which would have been a basic coupe.
03:53He's taken it to the Let's Go Fast shop, your favourite shop in the world.
03:58And he's done a few little personal modifications to take it down that sort of rally tribute route.
04:04But unfortunately, he can't finish the project now because he's had an accident
04:08and it's now time for him to sell his car, which is where we step in.
04:12OK. I'm interested to see what he's done. How far down the project was he before he had to stop?
04:17If it does start, stop and go, it's just how well it starts, stops and goes is an issue.
04:23Well, that's a good start. Let's go and have a look.
04:28Now, apparently, this car is Petter's pride and joy.
04:32Looks alright.
04:33And he's a regular at 110R enthusiast meetings.
04:36Hello, Petter.
04:37Petter doesn't speak any English, but he has a friend who does.
04:41Hello, Aneshka. Lovely meeting you.
04:42Aneshka.
04:43Yes, this one.
04:44Hi, Aneshka.
04:45Nice to meet you.
04:46You've decided it's now time to sell your lovely Skoda 110.
04:51Why are you now selling it?
04:53Protože dělat nemůžu.
04:56So he's not going to the meetings as often as he did in the past.
05:01OK.
05:02And he has had the accident, so he's not able to be fully committed to the car anymore.
05:07OK. Well, that's a sad reason to sell the car. Fantastic.
05:10Yeah?
05:11He's done a lot of the work himself to this car.
05:13Is there anything that we need to be aware of?
05:15Anything wrong with the car that we should look out for?
05:17I think I had the word carburetor.
05:22Yeah.
05:23Carburetor.
05:24Not the engine inside.
05:25OK.
05:26All right.
05:27Are you happy if we look round it and we like what we see if we take it for a quick test drive?
05:32Of course.
05:33Super.
05:34Is that OK?
05:35Oh, lovely.
05:36Thank you.
05:37Yes, that's your key.
05:38First and foremost, mate, the paintwork looks really sharp, doesn't it?
05:40I mean, it looks actually in good condition.
05:42Well, and also, all this chrome work, the bright work, I mean, it needs a bit of a polish up, but decent conditions.
05:49Mate, what's that?
05:50That's not standard, is it?
05:52Look at this.
05:53That looks like a motorcycle exhaust, doesn't it?
05:56The engine has been upgraded, so it's no longer got the original engine.
05:59It's actually got kind of a modern engine out of a fabric.
06:02It's a 1.3.
06:03But that's not necessarily a bad thing, is it?
06:05Because one of the things about this car is it adds zero power.
06:08You know, the 0-60 on the original engine, I think it was about 18 and a half seconds.
06:11You're kidding.
06:12Serious.
06:13Like, straight up.
06:14Seriously.
06:15Taking on someone else's unfinished project could be risky,
06:18especially when it's had surgery as major as an engine transplant.
06:23I'm going to leave you with this.
06:24Yeah.
06:25I'm going to have a good dig around inside.
06:26Yeah, go on then.
06:27I mean, he's clearly done a lot of his own work to this car.
06:32That's not a standard air filter.
06:34He says there's something wrong with the carburetor, so that definitely is going to need some attention.
06:38Where's the radiator?
06:40There's no cooling radiator in here.
06:45It's got to be somewhere else.
06:48There it is.
06:54It very much is a homemade job, this, isn't it?
06:57To try and improve cooling performance, Petter's moved the radiator to the front of the car,
07:02where, in theory, there's more natural air flow.
07:05So they have run pipework all the way from the rear of the car underneath, right to the front,
07:12and it's fed by a homemade grill in the front.
07:16That doesn't look anywhere near big enough to actually cool that radiator effectively.
07:20Wow, this has been upgraded inside, hasn't it?
07:24I mean, it looks like these are sculptured seats, and they look kind of racy, the seats, but they are basically seat covers.
07:30Underneath, we do have some nice-looking seats, but unfortunately, they're torn open and they're not going to work.
07:36Down on the floor, that may look like steel checker plate, but actually, that is...
07:43Yeah, look at that. That's carpet.
07:45So, they'll have to go.
07:48Petter's clearly put his heart and soul into this car.
07:51He certainly has, but there's no doubt it's a work in progress.
07:57For me, there's quite a lot of work to actually tidy this up and make it look like something we can sell.
08:02Well, look, the key's in the ignition. Why don't we fire it up and take it for a test drive, see what it drives like.
08:07I'll get the gate.
08:09OK.
08:15Oh, yeah. I like that.
08:17That is all. Sounds racy. It's not going to be a relaxing long drive, is it?
08:21No.
08:22I mean, even Petter mentioned there might be something with a carburettor.
08:26It's like a little...
08:29And then it smooths out.
08:30Yeah.
08:31The question for us is what do we do with it?
08:34Because he's gone so far down a route of sort of aftermarket bits and bobs, a bit more of a sort of motorsport inspired touch everywhere, but not the full hog.
08:44So, do we continue his work or do we have to go back to sort of originality?
08:49Where's the value going to be in this car?
08:51Well, it's a tough one for us because we can go back to basics and turn it into an original car.
08:56However, I feel now that we're in it and driving it down the road and it feels quite nippy, this car.
09:02So loud.
09:03It sounds loud.
09:04But he started to push this into sort of a rally evocation.
09:09Yeah.
09:10And I know that's exactly what you love to do.
09:13If we keep it a bit of both, a nice road car, but a rally inspired looking road car, I think we'll have a much wider market to go to.
09:23Cars 340,000 krona, right?
09:27Yeah.
09:28Actually works out to just under £12,000.
09:31Yeah.
09:32But I don't feel that I want to negotiate with Petter because I don't want to feel like we're taking advantage.
09:38Yeah, because I also don't really want to disrespect any of the work that he's done, even though we might undo some of it.
09:43I don't want to use that as a bargaining tool, so I agree.
09:46Good.
09:49Let's just hope he hasn't changed his mind about selling.
09:54Hello.
09:55How was it?
09:56Good fun.
09:57That's what it was.
09:58Good fun.
09:59Me and Elvis have had a chat about it, and if Petter is still willing to sell the car, we know he wants 340,000 krona.
10:09We just would like to buy it, if that's possible.
10:12Okay, let me check that.
10:13Yes.
10:14Okay, he's done.
10:15Thank you very much, sir.
10:16Congratulations.
10:17Well done.
10:18Thank you.
10:19Thank you.
10:20Thank you very much, sir.
10:21Congratulations.
10:22Well done.
10:23Thank you.
10:24Thank you.
10:25Thank you very much, sir.
10:26Congratulations.
10:27Well done.
10:28Thank you.
10:29Thank you, Petter.
10:30Petter has done some amazing work to the car.
10:33This is a car that me and Elvis really want to finish basically on his behalf.
10:38Tell him the engine upgrade is great.
10:40He said that you have done a lot of work and that the engine has improved it is great.
10:44Okay.
10:45We got ourselves a Skoda 110R.
10:50With good 110Rs going for 16,000 euros and above, I reckon we've got room for a rally inspired makeover and a profit.
10:59Yeah, we need somewhere to work though.
11:02Right, we are on our way to a lovely garage where we've got use of the ramp, use of the tools, use of some expertise,
11:09it's a family run business.
11:12They like their race cars.
11:14Well, if they got racing in their blood, I feel like we'll get on.
11:17Yes.
11:18They're workshops in a nearby town, so we should be there in no time.
11:27I think you might have spoken too soon, mate.
11:36Oh, no.
11:37Blimey.
11:38That's overheated.
11:39That's thrown all the coolant at the top of the expansion tank.
11:43Why does this happen like seconds after you buy the car?
11:45Well, I'm going to be honest with you, because things like this are bound to happen.
11:50I knew that that cooling setup wasn't adequate.
11:53I didn't expect it to overheat this quickly.
11:55Well, look, we need to get that off.
11:57It's too hot.
11:58Are there any...
11:59The only way we could do that is take a seat cover off.
12:03That's just what I'm doing.
12:04We're not going to use them, are we?
12:05No.
12:06Oh, yeah.
12:07It's got a bit of fizz to it.
12:08It has.
12:09Just let the pressure off.
12:10How far away is this workshop?
12:12From here, it's about another five kilometres.
12:15Right, I'm going to just spin it over very quickly.
12:18Oh, dear.
12:19Oh, come on.
12:20It's got worse.
12:21Seriously?
12:22It's got even worse now.
12:23You know why?
12:24What have we got out of the car that didn't turn the headlights off?
12:25We've got a flat battery.
12:26We are literally in the middle of, well, nowhere.
12:41What are we going to do?
12:43Here we go.
13:10You're going to be my navigator, are you?
13:11I am going to be your navigator.
13:12So...
13:13When was the last time you actually opened up a physical map?
13:16Well, that one's upside down to start with.
13:18We're in Czechia.
13:20Although, don't ask Mike exactly where.
13:23You know you can't zoom in by just doing that.
13:25No, you can't pinch, can you?
13:27Why won't it get any bigger?
13:29After yesterday's breakdown, our stricken Skoda was towed to the workshop.
13:34We just need to get there so we can start fixing it.
13:37Mate, you have not got a clue, have you?
13:39I have.
13:40I have got a clue.
13:41One second.
13:42Trust me Elvis, I got this.
13:44The garage is right here on the outskirts of Prague.
13:47And it's run by father and son Skoda fanatics Peter and Pavel.
13:52There they are, our two heroes.
13:55Hey, how are you?
13:56Pavel.
13:57Hi, Mike.
13:58Finally, we get to meet properly.
13:59Peter, how are you?
14:01With ramps, a parts store and an incredible collection of cars.
14:05After you, sir.
14:06Thank you.
14:07This place is a shrine to all things Skoda.
14:10Wow.
14:11Check this out.
14:12Our kingdom.
14:13Peter doesn't speak much English.
14:14Peter doesn't speak much English.
14:16But judging by all those trophies, he's fluent in racing.
14:20This is the car of my father.
14:21Yeah?
14:22Great.
14:23And this is 130 RS.
14:24You're still racing?
14:25You are?
14:26That's incredible.
14:27Peter, that's amazing.
14:29That is amazing.
14:30And that car is incredible.
14:32Peter's been rallying for more than 40 years.
14:35He's handed his skills behind the wheel and under the bonnet to his son, Pavel.
14:39So, you clearly both know exactly what to do when working on a 110.
14:45Yep.
14:46That's confident.
14:47So, shall we get to work?
14:49Yeah, let's go.
14:50Lean the way, Caps.
14:51Thank you.
14:52Come on.
14:54After yesterday's breakdown, we already know the call-in system isn't up to scratch.
14:59Okay, Pavel, all the way up, please.
15:01Fortunately, the chassis looks pretty solid.
15:03Peter?
15:04It's good.
15:05Yeah.
15:06I mean, no rust.
15:07Yeah, ready.
15:08It's good.
15:09I think he likes it.
15:10The suspension is a different story.
15:13Right, can I have a look?
15:15What have you found?
15:16Look, you see that?
15:17Someone's welded a spring.
15:19I think they've cut the spring down to lower the car.
15:22I reckon they've nicked that with an angle grinder and then welded it.
15:26Which is just, you can't do that.
15:28Okay, so...
15:29We need new springs, mate.
15:31The weld in the spring has created a weak point where it could easily break.
15:37And the DIY modifications don't end there.
15:40This is a bit exposed, isn't it?
15:42What's going on there?
15:43The heater pipes all the way underneath the car.
15:45It's those coolant pipes.
15:46And you're right.
15:47I mean, that's my first thought as well.
15:48It's the first thing that's going to get hit if you run over a lump or hit a rock.
15:52Yeah.
15:53Particularly on a rally.
15:54We'll need to reroute the pipes or give them some kind of protective covering.
15:59But we can only do that once we've got the cooling system working.
16:06I wonder how much water is left in this system.
16:11I don't want to know what that is.
16:13I might need a decontamination shower.
16:15Yes.
16:16With the coolant drained, I'm keen to get Peter and Pavel's take on this unusual setup.
16:20This radiator, for me, doesn't look big enough.
16:23Very thin core, right?
16:25And secondly, the grill that feeds it with airflow is very, very small.
16:30Are you familiar with this setup?
16:32I mean, is this a common modification to put the radiator in the front of the car?
16:36Yeah, of course.
16:37It's better for the fresh air.
16:39It's better for the engine.
16:41But the radiator is really small.
16:44You think it changed the radiator for something with a much deeper core, much bigger expanse?
16:49Yeah, I think it's a good idea.
16:51It needs some modification, but a bigger radiator and one, maybe two fans.
16:57Yeah, it's possible.
16:58To get more air into the radiator, we also need a front panel with a bigger intake.
17:03We have some, but not painted, but I think that it will fit.
17:08Well, you have a front panel?
17:09Yeah.
17:10That would be amazing.
17:11And it has the big open grill on it?
17:12Yeah, the same like on the race cars.
17:16While Peter and I start removing the old radiator and it's plumbing, I've asked Pavel to dig out the spare front panel and show it to Mike.
17:24Ah, right, OK, this. It's going to need painting.
17:27Yeah, but it's not rust. It's good.
17:29Yeah.
17:30Only some need some colour.
17:31OK, all right. And Elvis says we definitely need this, did he?
17:34Yeah, Elvis told me.
17:35Did he tell you we need anything else?
17:37For a sport look, it will be nice. Some air dam. I think that this one will fit.
17:44Right.
17:45What do you think?
17:46Well, it's like the front lip.
17:47Yep, it's lip-like here.
17:49It goes like that. Oh, I see. That does look much better with that on it.
17:53An air dam will help cool the engine by redirecting the airflow up and through the bigger grill.
18:00It will also give us the runny look we're aiming for. But it comes at a price.
18:05How much have I got to spend on this and that?
18:09For you, Mike?
18:11About £7,000.
18:15That's about £250. I've been here five minutes. Five minutes we walk through this door and already I'm spending money.
18:22Yeah, but I always like it.
18:24Yeah, but of course he does. He wants everything. I will buy these bits.
18:28Perfect.
18:29Thank you.
18:30Mate, what are you like? We've arrived moments ago and you've already had Pavel dig out bits for the car.
18:38This is part of the solution to helping our cooling problem.
18:41I've already removed that rusty old radiator. Once this front panel's off, we'll be all set to install a brand new cooling system.
18:49Don't need that anymore. No. OK, well look, I'll get this off to the paint shop, do a colour match and leave it with me.
18:55Perfect. That's for me.
18:58I've asked Peter to source and prep a new larger radiator with a much deeper core.
19:04He's found a similar model to the one he uses in his own Skoda 130 RS.
19:09Hello. Hello.
19:12Oh, hello.
19:13What's the music?
19:15Good. Good.
19:17That is amazing.
19:18Super.
19:19That's super. Thank you very much. OK, that is good.
19:22This new radiator has a dual core design which effectively doubles its cooling power, something our car definitely needs.
19:32There's essentially so much more water flowing through this at any given time.
19:36And, of course, it is going to match up perfectly with our new front panel, which has the cooling vent effectively covering all of that space, cooling all of the fluid moving through this unit.
19:48But fitting it is far from straightforward, as it was never designed for a 110R.
19:53Ah, super.
19:55With no brackets to attach the radiator to, the only solution is to fit our own.
20:01This is where Peter's years of experience with 110Rs really comes to the fore.
20:08Luckily, Peter knows the exact form of the new panel because he's done this before, so we know exactly where this has to sit.
20:14The brackets are on. I'm just going to mark the holes.
20:17OK.
20:19And then we can drill through.
20:24It's brilliant.
20:25It's got that motorsport mentality where you just plough on and get stuff done because time is your enemy.
20:33With the radiator bolted in place and the pipework connected, the first stage of the installation is complete.
20:47Half an hour away, me and Pavel bought our front grill and air dam to his go-to bodywork painter, Carol.
20:56This is your man, is it?
20:58Hi, Carol. Hi. Yes, this is Mike. This is Carol.
21:01Hello.
21:03We need the new pieces of bodywork to match the red of our car.
21:07Carol has a selection of colour swatches to help.
21:10It's called...
21:11Oh, how about that?
21:12This is a good one. No way.
21:13Really?
21:14Rally what?
21:15What's that called?
21:16Rally?
21:17Yeah, rally rod.
21:18Wow.
21:19It's just...
21:20And this is the colour of the car.
21:21Remember, it was a road car.
21:22It was never a rally car.
21:23But the actual colour is called rally rod, which is rally red, I gather.
21:26Yeah.
21:27Fantastic.
21:28Our car is already painted in the same red used by Skoda's own rally team.
21:33It's as if our rally homage idea is meant to be.
21:38It has got a couple of broken brackets, some of these little springs are barely hanging on for dear life.
21:43While I went for Mike's new front panel, I'm tackling the car's ridiculously loud motorbike exhaust.
21:48So what I'm going to do is strip it apart, take it off, and then think about making our own to replace it with.
21:53Because the car's had an engine change, a standard 110R exhaust won't fit.
21:58Not much of a wrestle.
22:00So we need to create a bespoke system for the car.
22:09Ah, yes.
22:10Yo.
22:11Dobre.
22:12Dobre.
22:13Thank you very much.
22:14That's exactly what I'm after.
22:15So this is the beginnings of our new exhaust system.
22:17This is a lovely second hand, albeit very good condition, four into one set of downpipes.
22:23I'm going to slot this in position just for a dry fit, so I can then start to mock up the rest of it.
22:28Find out which bits I need to make.
22:33So that is going to sit down there.
22:35That is tight.
22:39That is very tight.
22:40OK.
22:41Unlike a manifold, this header has free-flowing pipes to allow exhaust gases to escape faster for higher performance.
22:51Problem is, the longer the pipes, the more space they take up.
22:55Petter, who we bought the car off, when he modified the system to run the cooling pipes from the engine at the back of the car all the way down to the front,
23:02the way he's routed those is now in the way of my new exhaust system.
23:08So what I'm going to have to do is reroute those coolant pipes away from the exhaust.
23:14Right, another job to add to the list.
23:16Right, OK, can we get to work?
23:25Yep.
23:27Having found the right colour for our new front panel, we need to give it a good rubdown.
23:32Right, very good.
23:33Before blasting it with compressed air to get rid of any dust.
23:40My Beyonce moment.
23:44That's it.
23:46Next, Carol mixes up some filler.
23:50It's usually about a golf ball, a filler to a pea of hardener.
23:55Then he applies that to any small dinks and dents on our replacement panel.
24:00We've now got all the little imperfections.
24:02Now we've just got to wait.
24:05Put not smooth.
24:08You see, what happens in a British workshop, right, when somebody says 15 minutes, you know what happens?
24:13A kettle goes on.
24:16And we stop for a cup of tea.
24:18Yeah, typical Englishman.
24:20Tea with milk.
24:22Yes, exactly.
24:23You can't blame a guy for trying.
24:24The longer I'm here though, the more I'm beginning to realise what tea is to England, the Skoda is to Czechia.
24:36When I was young, the Skoda was our first car.
24:42I always say that the Skoda has an invisible arrow to the Czech people.
24:48Yeah, an invisible arrow.
24:49It's a passion, emotion and also the history.
24:55Yeah, yeah, it's fantastic, isn't it?
24:58Right, I think Carol's ready for us.
25:01We've got a drip on there and you can't tell the difference.
25:05It's a match and we'll be leaving the panel with Carol for priming and painting.
25:09That is absolutely perfect, yeah.
25:12Carol, thanks buddy, much appreciated.
25:14Well done.
25:16OK.
25:18We're one step closer to giving our car the rally look we're hoping for.
25:22Let's grab that one there.
25:24But don't forget, it still needs to run as a standard road car.
25:28And that means sorting out the basics, like that dodgy car.
25:30Mike and I, when we drove it, could feel something not quite right.
25:34So I'm going to strip it down, give it a full clean up and a good look over and see if I can find any problems with it.
25:41The car's controlled by the throttle cable, which adjusts the flow of fuel and air.
25:46Now with a sort of traditional twin downdraft carburettor, that cable will pull on the throttle mechanism.
25:54It will open the first of those two chambers.
25:56But with this one, instead of that cable also opening the second chamber, this is operated differently via a vacuum acting on a diaphragm inside here.
26:07Now, one thing I definitely need to check is whether that diaphragm is fully intact and working properly.
26:12Now, when this is working effectively, there's a vacuum pulling on the top of the diaphragm, which then moves this plunger here.
26:20And that's what acts on our throttle, giving us full throttle when we need it.
26:23If I suck on there creating a vacuum in the top, we should get exactly the same movement.
26:32Right, now it is moving, but it's definitely not moving that much, is it?
26:36We're not getting anywhere near the full amount of travel.
26:40That might suggest there is some damage to the diaphragm.
26:42So, the next step is to take that apart and see what's inside.
26:48Ah, there we go.
26:51Let's see the problem.
26:53Look at that.
26:54There's a little hole in there.
26:55Because there's a hole, there's no way we're going to be pulling a solid vacuum on the other side of this diaphragm.
27:02And therefore, we're not going to be able to get the full actuation of our second throttle, not getting maximum throttle.
27:08It's going to affect the way the car drives, which is exactly what Mike and I felt.
27:13Right, that's going to need replacing.
27:14So far, all we've done is fix problems.
27:18And I'd like us to be cracking on with some rally-style upgrades.
27:23Right, Peter, I think I'm going to finish this tomorrow.
27:25I hope Mike has had a good day, because I'm going to go and meet him for a pilsner.
27:29So, I'll see you. We'll crack on again in the morning.
27:31OK.
27:32OK.
27:33Thank you very much.
27:34I've certainly worked up a thirst.
27:39Me too.
27:40Well, don't worry.
27:41I know just the place.
27:45Smells a bit beer-y in here.
27:50What are you doing? What are you doing, Matt?
27:51He's putting some more hops and some more yeast in.
27:53This is where they invented pilsner, and they don't just drink it.
27:56They're literally barfing it, mate. This is yeast and hops.
27:59You're brewing right now.
28:00So, I'm living up to my namesake.
28:02I might be in beer heaven, but I'm starting to have some nagging doubts about our plans for the car.
28:09Because we're taking it down this rally route,
28:11and we're going to be quite specific with the way the car looks,
28:14that does make me worried we won't find anyone to sell it to.
28:17This is what Petter started.
28:18Look, he started out on a project to turn this into some sort of rally tribute.
28:23We only need one person to sell it to.
28:24So, if we do a proper job, do the right job,
28:26and put it in front of the right person, we'll sell it.
28:30I love your confidence.
28:31Have some yeast, mate.
28:32Have some yeast.
28:33Stop topping me up and stuff.
28:34Cheers.
28:35Cheers, buddy.
28:36God, I really do smell like a brewer.
28:38I love you.
28:39I love you.
28:44Creating a car inspired by its rally heritage is a fun idea.
28:49But how far do we take it?
28:51Careful.
28:52Thank you.
28:5350 miles east of Prague in a town of Kaslav, the Skoda 110R Club is having its yearly meet.
28:59Wow.
29:00The people of Czechia certainly loved their Skodas, didn't they?
29:06It's the perfect place to find out what kind of modifications are deemed acceptable.
29:10Have you named your car?
29:11Green racket in the young stage.
29:12Green racket.
29:13Wow.
29:14Look at that.
29:15That's incredible.
29:16I want that one.
29:17That's what I want.
29:18I don't think you need to worry, Mike.
29:19There are nearly 200 110Rs here and when it comes to modifications, it looks like anything
29:31goes.
29:33Modification is okay.
29:34Well, clearly, yeah.
29:35You can do whatever you want to.
29:36Yeah.
29:37No one's going to turn their nose up.
29:38Yes.
29:39Is this his car or does he have another one as well?
29:41Oh, that's yours.
29:45And that one as well.
29:46I can't miss this opportunity.
29:48Would he like to buy another one?
29:50Because we're going to have one for sale.
29:51Yeah.
29:52That's a no.
29:53That's a no.
29:55It seems 110R fans are happy to embrace its sporting history, which is a relief.
30:01We need to perfect the look for our car.
30:03I tell you what I like initially on this is the stripe down the side because that car's
30:07a lot of red.
30:08Yeah.
30:09And, you know, a stripe down the side does work, doesn't it?
30:11Well, it always makes a car look faster, doesn't it?
30:13And go faster.
30:14I mean, that's added at least five horsepower, that stripe.
30:17Gold wheels as well.
30:18With a red car, that works.
30:20But we definitely need to think about a black bonnet.
30:23I think that could be a good call, you know.
30:26Proper rally cars of a certain generation do that, don't they?
30:29Well, they do.
30:30They do do it to sort of negate the glare you can get on a sunny day through the screen.
30:34But it's a nice little nod to the rally heritage of these cars.
30:37The things that I'm getting from this is keep the car red.
30:40Maybe a touch of gold in the wheels.
30:42I like the idea of painting the bonnet black.
30:45In my mind, I've just confirmed, really, is that front panel with the new front grille
30:49that Petter suggested, I think it's going to work perfectly.
30:51Oh, yeah.
30:52They look great.
30:53Yeah.
30:54We know what we're doing now with the car, which direction, which means that we've got
30:57a lot more work to do.
30:58Yeah, you're right.
30:59Maybe we shouldn't have come here after all, should we?
31:01We should probably crack on, shouldn't we?
31:02Yeah.
31:10Before we turn our attention to the rally look, we've still got some work to do.
31:14Dobry den.
31:15Dobry den.
31:16Dobry den.
31:17Dobry den.
31:18Not least finishing off that exhaust, which Peter and Pavel have been preparing in my absence.
31:24If you find a position, I'll go ahead and make up the brackets.
31:28Perfect.
31:29We've gone for a large-bore high-flow silencer to complement the new header that I fitted yesterday.
31:36I'm mounting my new brackets onto special bobbins that will prevent the exhaust vibrations
31:41from transmitting to the bodywork.
31:43I'm going to mount those on there loosely.
31:45Once I've got both brackets in place, I then can think about offering up the silencer.
31:52You have to be high, that means you have to have it somewhere.
31:57It's okay.
31:58I know what you're saying.
31:59Yeah, I don't think he likes my brackets.
32:02And I do get it.
32:03I was hoping for a much smaller gap between the silencer and the bumper itself,
32:08which also will affect the ground clearance.
32:11We don't want this sitting too low.
32:12And I think Peter has just pointed out what I was realizing myself,
32:16that I might need to reform these brackets to sit the whole thing a bit higher.
32:22After adjusting the brackets to raise the silencer,
32:27Peter tack welds the tailpipe to give us our final position.
32:30Okay.
32:31Right, that is looking really good.
32:32Now I've just got to get the whole thing fully welded up.
32:35And we've got an exhaust system.
32:38Now the silencer's in, we weld a connecting pipe to our new higher-performance rally-style header.
32:44If you could just pop a couple of tacks in there for me.
32:47Yes.
32:48And apart from needing a new paint job, our exhaust system's complete.
32:52Okay?
32:53Okay.
32:54Right on the magic number.
33:01While Elvis masters the oily bits, I'm off to accessorise.
33:07Very nice.
33:08I love it.
33:09To complete our rally makeover, we need to get the car looking the part.
33:13Both outside and in.
33:15Looking around Peter's collection of his own private rally cars,
33:18we can see that almost by default, every single one of them has got,
33:22instead of carpet mats, it's got a rally plate.
33:25So, I'm on my way to go and see a guy who's going to help me cut out some metal
33:30and make me some bespoke rally plates.
33:37How are you doing?
33:38You must be Peter.
33:39Ah, hello.
33:40Is it me, or is everyone in Czechia called Peter?
33:43I will get the steel and you can take the gloves here.
33:46Ah, nice.
33:47Well done.
33:48Yep, lovely.
33:49I've come prepared with drawings and templates taken from the original car mats.
33:53I like your safety goggles.
33:55These are like sunglasses.
33:56They look like I'm going skiing.
33:58Look at that.
33:59Eh?
34:00Instead of checker plate design on carpet, these will be the real deal.
34:05Fabricated from two and a half mil thick aluminium plate.
34:08I'll go and get a cup of tea.
34:10I'll leave you to that.
34:11Let's leave.
34:12No, I don't mind getting involved.
34:14Rally stages tend to be bumpy.
34:18Okay.
34:19Which means the driver's feet can slip around.
34:22See my universal language of zzz.
34:25Zzz.
34:26Zzz.
34:27See, that works.
34:29The textured surface of the checker plate helps them maintain grip.
34:35One down.
34:36So, what we've now got is we've got left and right, both plates.
34:51We've now got to clean up the edges and we've only been here 15 minutes.
34:56It's quick.
34:57They work really fast, these boys.
35:00Now our mats have been cut, we need to file them down.
35:04And bend the edges.
35:07So they fit snugly into our 110R's interior.
35:10We need to go to another water shop.
35:12Okay.
35:13I'll follow you.
35:14Lead the way, Peter.
35:15Let's go this way.
35:16Next door, Peter's colleague has the machinery to bend our sheet metal.
35:22Bet you can't guess what his name is.
35:24Hello.
35:25Hello.
35:26Hello.
35:27Don't.
35:28No.
35:29Don't tell me.
35:30Is that for real?
35:31Is his name really Peter?
35:32Yeah, yeah.
35:33Another Peter here.
35:34Everyone around here is called Peter.
35:36This feels like a wind-up.
35:38Anyway, Peter, if that's his name, will use this special machine to make short work of our sheet metal.
35:45First, he secures the plate in position.
35:47And then, with some leverage and a little brute force, he can bend the metal and guarantee a perfect right angle.
35:54The whole thing comes up.
36:00It's okay?
36:01Just perfect.
36:02Yeah.
36:03Man, you are a legend.
36:05You're an absolute legend.
36:06That is just awesome.
36:08That is going to make Elvis so happy in the little touch of rally magic that we're putting into our car.
36:15So he's going to love that.
36:16Well done.
36:17While we're here, I'm also on the hunt for some protection for those coolant pipes running under the length of our 110R.
36:25This is a tough one.
36:27To withstand any bumps and bangs beneath the car, Peter increases our sheet metal to an even thicker gauge.
36:33That's where they go light.
36:37I haven't done that much pulling and pushing for years.
36:42Oh, you genius.
36:44And that is the cage for our lovely pipes that run the length of the car that's going to protect them.
36:50And it looks pretty cool too, doesn't it?
36:52Thank you.
36:53Yes.
36:54Thank you, Peter.
36:55I'm going to keep these glasses, by the way, Peter. They look really good on me.
37:00So I'm just going to keep this.
37:06Peter, I love you.
37:07Okay.
37:08I love you.
37:09With Peter and Pavel's help, our Skoda's starting to take shape.
37:13I've given our grimy old car a spruce up using an ultrasonic cleaner.
37:17So now I just need to fit that new diaphragm.
37:21Crucially, our diaphragm is now fully intact.
37:23If I put it on the carburettor, we should get the performance that we're after.
37:31There we go.
37:32A fully functional and clean carburettor.
37:35We've already removed the bodged rear suspension spring.
37:38So next on the list is to fit some nice new ones.
37:42Someone's tried to lower the car by simply cutting through the existing spring,
37:46which would have been much taller.
37:48In doing so, they've also damaged the coil above it
37:50and then had to repair it with a weld.
37:52And the proper solution to lower your car and give it that rally stance that we're after
37:55is by buying a set of lowered springs.
37:57And luckily, the guys here in the workshop have some.
38:01The freshly painted front panel is also now in place,
38:04so the radiator can be kept properly cool.
38:07And Peter's even fabricated a panel to help direct warm air out through the bonnet.
38:11This is a very good job. I like it.
38:13Yeah, yeah.
38:14Perfect.
38:15Thank you.
38:16With the mechanical jobs now complete, we can finally focus on the looks.
38:21And I've been busy as well.
38:23Shall we get this on first?
38:25So let's lift that up.
38:26Yep.
38:27I'll do the bolts.
38:29Inspired by our trip to the event, we've got some must-have accessories to complete the rally look.
38:35Like a rally team.
38:36Perfect, yep.
38:37That's exactly what we're like, we're like a rally team.
38:39As well as repainting the bonnet, we've sourced new seats from a local supplier and rally-style gold wheels from Pavel's workshop to give the 110R the minus touch.
38:51Oh, this is looking good, Elvis.
38:53I'm pretty sure I've done everything we need to do now to really give this car a proper push.
38:56Hold on a minute.
38:57Hold on a minute.
38:58Remember, last time we drove this car, something was wrong with the car, Brett, and the thing overheated.
39:03So I have my ear confidence, but we're about to find out.
39:07True.
39:18Temperature gate sitting sweetly in the middle.
39:20It is, isn't it?
39:21It feels really good, doesn't it?
39:23And I'll tell you who would be so happy with what we've done right now.
39:27Better.
39:28Better would just be over the moon.
39:30Yeah.
39:31Because he wanted to do this.
39:32This was his dream.
39:33Yeah.
39:34To take this car down and sort of tribute rally route.
39:37And I think we've smashed it.
39:38Yeah, I feel really pleased that we've kind of continued that journey on.
39:41Because you're right, he started this process.
39:43I mean, he had some good ideas.
39:45And where he couldn't finish it, we've been able to.
39:48So I hope that he'd be as proud of this as we are.
39:51Finishing what Petra had started by taking this 110R down the rally route was a brave decision.
39:59Especially when there were so many mechanical issues to address first.
40:04But boy, am I glad we took the plunge.
40:11Mate, how good does that look?
40:13It just takes a breath away.
40:15We could have quite easily turned it back into a standard car, but that is just perfect.
40:20Well, you think about all those cars that were that meet we went to.
40:23Hundreds of them, right?
40:24And there were some exceptional cars.
40:26This would sit perfectly in amongst any of those.
40:29Inspired by other 110Rs we saw, we've given the car an authentic rally inspired look.
40:37But the transformation is more than skin deep.
40:40That improved cooling system now works in the way Petra originally intended.
40:44And the new front bodywork doesn't just look good.
40:47It also aids performance.
40:50A new sporty exhaust system completes the loop.
40:54And with a few optional extras to make the Skoda feel at home on the rally circuit,
40:59the car owes us 420,000 krona or about 15,000 pounds.
41:05It does actually look, sitting here, like it was born for the rally circuit.
41:09Yeah, alright, let's just go.
41:10Just 15 miles south of Prague, a disused field is a hotspot for rally enthusiasts.
41:20Luckily for us, today we've got the whole place to ourselves.
41:25Come on then fella!
41:26Let's get the slipper!
41:27Oh my god!
41:28Get the slipper down!
41:29Whoa!
41:30Easy, easy, easy, easy!
41:31This is what this car's supposed to be!
41:32Whoa!
41:33Whoa!
41:34Whoa!
41:35Whoa!
41:36Whoa!
41:37Whoa!
41:38Whoa!
41:39Whoa!
41:40Whoa!
41:41Whoa!
41:42Whoa!
41:43Whoa!
41:44Whoa!
41:45Whoa!
41:46Whoa!
41:47Whoa!
41:48Whoa!
41:49Whoa!
41:50Whoa!
41:51Whoa!
41:52Familyishes!
41:54I tell you what, it does actually come alive, doesn't it?
41:56Once it's up in the higher road- rate.
42:00Oh-ho-HO!
42:01That is wicked!
42:03God, it sounds amazing, Elvis.
42:05Oh, it feels at home.
42:07Whoa, whoa!
42:08There's a rock!
42:09What, a rock!
42:11Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
42:13We built a rally!
42:15Wa-ha-ha-ha-ha!
42:17That is awesome!
42:19What a car, what a car.
42:25Oh, I love it.

42:58Once we've given it a thorough hose down,
43:00the car will be listed for sale here in Czechia.
43:03And if we get close to our asking price, we'll have made money...
