The Solar Sharer program would give consumers in some areas free electricity for three hours a day, as long as they have a smart meter installed. Video via AAP
00:00Today I've announced reforms to the default market offer, which is the benchmark market offer for energy prices to ensure that consumers are put first.
00:09There's a number of changes that we've announced today. In some ways the most important change is the introduction of solar share.
00:15We're a solar nation with 4.2 million houses with solar panels on their roofs.
00:19That means we have lots of electricity in the middle of the day and often electricity prices are negative in the middle of the day.
00:25Energy companies are not paying for the power that they provide in the middle of the day.
00:29So we will require as part of the default market offer in those states where it applies, energy companies to make that part of their offer under the DMR.
00:40This will also help the grid more broadly. As people move their demand to the middle of the day, to the degree that they do, that takes pressure off in the evening.
00:48This is not the answer to all the challenges in the energy group, but it is a meaningful step forward, a material improvement, a chance to improve the opportunities for people to reduce their bills and put them in charge.
