For Tobias Dorzon, the night of Nov. 5, 2024, began like any other date night. Known for his appearances on the Food Network and named 2024 Maryland Chef of the Year, Dorzon, 40, juggles the demands of his two busy restaurants — Huncho House and 1123 by Chef Tobias — while keeping up a standing tradition of biweekly date nights with his long-distance girlfriend, Crystal Swan, who had just flown into town. The two decided to treat themselves to dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Northwest D.C. The restaurant wasn’t particularly crowded; only a few people lingered at the bar, likely watching Election night coverage.

00:00Any other day, I'm outside, I have security with me.
00:04Any other day, I went to go open the car door for my girl.
00:09And as I'm going to open the car door, like once she get out the car,
00:13she steps down, and we're about to step up on the curb.
00:18I seen the two back doors of the car open.
00:21And yeah, when I seen the two back doors of the car open,
00:25like I immediately seen guns draw.
00:29And just like as I turned to them, they opened fire.
00:34And just trying to like protect my girl,
00:38I was trying to like cover her and started to get hit.
00:44And I went to the ground.
00:45And when I went to the ground, I was trying to like drag myself to like the curb.
00:51And I couldn't hear my girl, didn't hear my girl,
00:55couldn't hear nothing really going on.
00:58When they walk up on me, you know, they're like, man, you know why we're here?
01:02And they're like, man, come up off that watch.
01:04And so I just put my arm in the air.
01:06And as I put my arm in the air, you know, I'm looking at my other hand.
01:10And I see at that time, I don't know if it's adrenaline
01:16or I don't know if I'm only shot in my hands because I could see,
01:20physically see my hands like super bloody.
01:23I just raised my hand and they took the watch off my hand and they popped the chain off my neck.
01:29And at that time, I'm thinking like, they're going to, you know, pretty much finish me off.
01:35They got the jewelry, you know, but to not have no evidence, we're going to kill them.
01:41And then they just turn around and run to the car.
01:45In my town community, everybody started to come outside.
01:49So somebody, the person that lives too long down for us was just like, I want y'all to relax.
01:54All police already been called.
01:57Do I wish it was a different situation?
01:59Yeah.
02:00But I feel like, you know, it's taught me so much, but it's made me so much of a better man, better dad, better chef, just a better person.
02:09Like, you know, I'm just super grateful to, to, to be here right now, to, to be in the moment, to be able to enjoy life and still cook and still give people an experience that, you know, that was my biggest focus and my biggest dream.
02:25Like to always give people a food experience.
