00:00As you can see, I can't stay with you, dear. I'm melting like a snow cone in Phoenix.
00:04There we go again!
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks from the most iconic movie mistakes
00:10that ended up in the theatrical release.
00:12Our parents just died.
00:14Oh, yes, of course.
00:15How very, very awful.
00:18Wait! Let me do that one more time!
00:20Give me the line again! Quickly, while it's fresh in my mind!
00:24Our parents just... died?
00:27Oh, yes.
00:32Number 20. The Fly, Raiders of the Lost Ark.
00:36The first Indiana Jones movie is a classic piece of cinema.
00:39It's focused on the heroic archaeologist going on a quest to recover the Ark of the Covenant.
00:43Throughout the movie, he's competing with rival archaeologist Rene Belloc, played by Paul Freeman.
00:48At one point, a fly wanders onto Belloc's face.
00:51It ends up finding its way into his mouth, making it look like he ate the insect.
00:55Your persistence surprises even me.
00:59You're gonna give mercenaries a bad name.
01:02Turns out, while the fly was unscripted, he never ate it.
01:05In post-production, editors cut out a couple of frames of the fly buzzing off, and they added extra buzzing as well.
01:10We are simply passing through history.
01:12Number 19. Rich Falls, The Martian.
01:23Hey, even astrodynamicists lose their balance sometimes.
01:26I've done the math.
01:28Checks out.
01:31Rich?
01:31Yes, sir.
01:32Get out.
01:37Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, plays a scientist named Rich Purnell in Ridley Scott's The Martian.
01:43In one of Rich's first scenes, a co-worker wakes him up to have a conversation.
01:47After a few moments, Rich appears to have a revelation about something.
01:51He proclaims that he needs more coffee, swiftly stands up, and falls straight down, out of sight of the camera.
01:57I need more coffee.
01:58Are you alright?
02:01Fine.
02:02Apparently, this fall was not planned.
02:04The other actor running over to ask Glover if he's okay is really reacting to the accident.
02:09Scott liked the moment a lot, believing that it humanized Rich.
02:13So, he decided to keep it in the final cut.
02:15You do understand I'm your boss, right?
02:18Uh-huh.
02:22Number 18. Nick the Greek, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.
02:27Guy Ritchie is a respected director who achieved mainstream fame after Snatch in 2000.
02:32Two years earlier, he made his debut movie, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.
02:36Like Snatch, it's a heist movie set in London.
02:39One character named Nick the Greek is played by Stephen Marcus, who is responsible for smashing a glass table in one scene.
02:45After the table smashes, Nick's reaction is priceless.
02:48Do you know what I mean?
02:55This would have earned the actor a great deal of praise if it hadn't been a genuine response.
02:59It was completely unscripted, but Richie thought it was so iconic that he left it in the final product.
03:03So, if you'd just be kind enough to...
03:09Lenny?
03:15Number 17. Have a Nice Trip, Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.
03:21The acclaimed director Stanley Kubrick's filmography is filled with classics.
03:24Among his most loved is Dr. Strangelove, a black comedy satirizing Cold War attitudes toward nuclear weapons.
03:30One of the primary characters is General Buck Turgidson, who is played by George C. Scott.
03:35He was a highly acclaimed actor, known for being talented at improvisation.
03:39I'll tell you what you do.
03:42You just start your countdown, and old Bucky will be back here before you can say...
03:48Blast off!
03:50One example comes from this film, where he accidentally falls over.
03:53It wasn't in the script, but Kubrick apparently believed he was simply acting in character, so he left it in.
03:57Turns out, it wasn't at all planned. Scott genuinely stumbled.
04:01The fact that Kubrick believed this goes to show how talented an actor Scott was.
04:05It is designed to explode if any attempt is ever made to un-trigger it.
04:09Automatic.
04:10That's an obvious calming trick, Mr. President. We're wasting valuable time.
04:13Look at me, Warner. I'm getting ready to clobber us.
04:16Number 16. Kick to the Jaw, Mission Impossible 2.
04:20Tom Cruise has made a name for himself as a guy who wants to do all of his own stunts.
04:24I don't think I can get her to do it.
04:26You mean it'll be difficult?
04:28Very.
04:28Unfortunately, in Mission Impossible 2, he accidentally took things a bit too far.
04:33In a famous fight sequence that includes a knife centimeters away from Cruise's eye,
04:37the famous actor actually kicked his fight partner in the face.
04:40Cruise placed a roundhouse kick squarely on De Grey Scott's jaw,
04:54knocking the Scottish actor back for real.
04:56If you pay close attention, you can see Cruise react in horror to his mistake.
05:01Apparently, however, no one was horrified enough to leave it outside of the final cut.
05:05No, we're on, mate.
05:07Punk put a hole in my visage.
05:08Number 15. Breaking the Glass, Blade Runner.
05:12If you thought Daryl Hannah wasn't a consummate professional, think again.
05:15I'm hungry, J.R.
05:18I got stuff inside.
05:20But also, we think it's probably okay to ask to pause a scene if you literally injure yourself while filming it.
05:25While making the 1982 science fiction classic Blade Runner,
05:28Hannah accidentally smacked her elbow through a window.
05:31The moment happens when her character, named Pris, is running away from William Sanderson's character.
05:41While on the run, Hannah tripped over one of the many pieces of debris on set
05:45and crashed through a nearby car window.
05:48Hannah kept going, but she ended up cutting her elbow in multiple places.
05:52Director Ridley Scott kept the take, which really underscores the anxiety of the chase.
05:56We scared each other pretty good, didn't we?
05:58We sure did.
05:59Number 14. Accidental Sex Symbol, Casino Royale.
06:04Daniel Craig's first appearance as James Bond came in the 2006 movie, Casino Royale.
06:09While Craig was already considered attractive,
06:11one scene in the movie turned him into an international sex symbol.
06:14Can I give you a lift home?
06:16That would really send him over the edge.
06:20I'm afraid I'm not that cruel.
06:22Well, perhaps you just had to practice.
06:24This was the moment he was taking a dip in the ocean,
06:26then sauntered out shirtless towards the camera.
06:28Originally, Craig was meant to swim off into the ocean.
06:31Instead, he stumbled upon a sand shelf, forcing him to stand up.
06:34Craig then coolly walked toward the camera,
06:36and it became one of the most famous shots in the franchise.
06:39It was used for advertisements back in 2006, and is still remembered today.
06:42In some places where the water just stays at this depth for about a mile,
06:45so I kind of swam along, like, kind of pretending to swim,
06:49and then stood up and was there, and that's how the shot happened.
06:51So it was by accident more than anything.
06:53Number 13. Forgotten Line.
06:56Zoolander.
06:56Ben Stiller did an excellent job as the lead role in Zoolander,
06:59a satire of male fashion models.
07:01His character was hilariously dim-witted,
07:03but would have looked slightly smarter if it weren't for Stiller's improvisation.
07:07One iconic moment happened when Stiller asked David Duchovny's character,
07:10Why Male Models?
07:11So why male models?
07:14Think about it, Derek.
07:15After answering the question, Stiller forgot his line,
07:17so he asked the question again.
07:19But why male models?
07:21Duchovny was uncertain whether he was in character or not,
07:24so he gave a pretty confused reply.
07:26You serious? I just...
07:27I just told you that a moment ago.
07:30Right.
07:31This wasn't how the interaction was meant to go down,
07:33but the director found it far funnier than the original plan,
07:36and kept it in.
07:37Number 12. Stormtrooper Bunk.
07:39Star Wars Episode 4, A New Hope.
07:42Stormtroopers.
07:42The frightening, minion-like army of the Empire.
07:45It's him!
07:46Slap him!
07:48Get back to the chair!
07:49Where are you going?
07:50Come back!
07:50He certainly has courage.
07:52What good will it do if he gets himself killed?
07:53Come on.
07:54In the Star Wars franchise,
07:56they are the evil personified,
07:57which makes this clumsy misstep all the funnier.
08:00In A New Hope,
08:01there's a scene where a group of stormtroopers enters a control room.
08:04One of them isn't quite as smooth as the others,
08:06and audibly hits his head onto the doorway with a loud bonk.
08:10Take over.
08:11D.D.
08:12The incident has been confirmed to be an accident,
08:15with many actors claiming fault for the headbang over the years.
08:18We don't know if a bunch of people lied about their role as the trooper,
08:21or if there were a bunch of scenes of stormtroopers
08:23hitting their heads left on the cutting room floor.
08:26We're hoping it's the latter.
08:27You don't need to see his identification.
08:30We don't need to see his identification.
08:32Number 11.
08:33Line,
08:34Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
08:37Few actors have nailed as many iconic characters as Jim Carrey.
08:40He put loads of effort into all his roles,
08:42including Count Olaf in the 2004 Lemony Snicket movie.
08:45One iconic moment comes early in the film,
08:47when Olaf is learning about the passing of the Baudelaire children's parents.
08:50My dear.
08:56Violet.
08:57Carrey seemed to think he could have gotten a better take,
08:59so he decided to ask to do it again.
09:01It's notable because he didn't break character the whole time.
09:03The director loved it so much that they kept it in the final movie.
09:06Your parents just died.
09:09Oh, yes, of course.
09:10How very, very awful.
09:12Wait.
09:13Let me do that one more time.
09:15Give me the line again.
09:16Quickly.
09:17Well, let's fresh in my mind.
09:17It adds an extra degree of surrealism to Count Olaf,
09:20making us appreciate Carrey's talents even more.
09:23Number 10.
09:24Vigo Breaks His Toe.
09:25The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers.
09:27Vigo Mortensen did a remarkable job at playing Aragorn,
09:30a performance that will be remembered for decades to come.
09:32Mortensen got so into the character that he would hike between sets
09:36in order to get a feeling for Aragorn that was as authentic as possible.
09:39The Uryx are destroyed.
09:40We slaughtered them during the night.
09:42But there were two hobbits.
09:43Do you see two hobbits with them?
09:45They would be small.
09:46Only children to your eyes.
09:48In one scene,
09:48he was scripted to kick an orc helmet and scream in anger.
09:51After about four takes,
09:52Mortensen did a phenomenally realistic performance,
09:55which blew the director away.
09:56The reason it was so realistic
09:58was that he kicked the helmet so hard
10:00that he broke two of his toes.
10:01The shot ended up being used in the final movie
10:03because of how convincing it was.
10:05Yeah!
10:08Number 9.
10:09Spit Take.
10:10Fast and Furious 6.
10:11Sometimes good improv leads to another actor making a mistake.
10:15So who's got a plan B?
10:16Plan B?
10:17Plan B?
10:18We need a plan C, D, E.
10:19We need more alphabets!
10:21Hey!
10:22We do what we do best!
10:24We improvise, alright?
10:25But sometimes,
10:26you end up keeping both in the final cut.
10:29Towards the end of Fast and Furious 6,
10:31the crew gathers together for a little family cookout.
10:34Luke Hobbs,
10:34played by Dwayne The Rock Johnson,
10:36arrives at the cookout
10:37where he improvises a funny line.
10:39In a quick comeback
10:40that no other actor knew was coming,
10:42The Rock makes fun of Tyrese Gibson's character's forehead.
10:52Ludacris reacts to this line
10:53by spitting out his drink.
10:55Luda was reacting in real time
10:57to The Rock's sick burn,
10:58and the take was so funny
10:59it made the final cut.
11:01Wasn't half bad having you work for me.
11:05Now we all know you're working for me, Hobbs.
11:07Number 8.
11:08Bonk.
11:09The Lord of the Rings,
11:10The Fellowship of the Ring.
11:11While filming Peter Jackson's
11:12The Lord of the Rings trilogy,
11:14Ian McKellen often had the difficult task
11:16of playing the very tall Gandalf,
11:18opposite a bunch of very small hobbits.
11:20Bilbo Baggins!
11:22Do not take me for some conjurer of cheap tricks.
11:26I am not trying to rob you.
11:29While filming inside Bilbo Baggins' home,
11:31McKellen accidentally knocks his head
11:33against the top of an archway.
11:34Just tea, thank you.
11:35Oh!
11:42Reportedly, Jackson found the moment
11:44so compelling and well-acted
11:45that he decided to keep it in the movie.
11:48But McKellen has a slightly different recollection.
11:50According to McKellen,
11:52the moment wasn't an accident at all.
11:54He just decided to do it without telling Jackson.
11:57Whatever the case,
11:57it's one of the moments that gives us
11:59such a warm, fuzzy feeling about Gandalf.
12:01I wish none of this had happened.
12:04So do all who live to see such times.
12:07But that is not for them to decide.
12:09All we have to decide is what to do
12:12with the time that is given to us.
12:14Number 7.
12:15Bleacher Fail
12:15The Princess Diaries
12:17In 2001's The Princess Diaries,
12:19Princess Mia Thermopolis
12:21isn't the most graceful of teenagers.
12:24Oh!
12:25Oops!
12:26I'm sorry, I didn't see you.
12:27If you asked her,
12:28she would probably say
12:29she's the last person in the world
12:31who could easily portray a sense of royalty.
12:33And that's what makes this little accident
12:35such a perfect character moment.
12:37In a scene where Mia and her friend Lily
12:39are talking on the bleachers,
12:40Mia suddenly slips and falls through the steps.
12:43Woo!
12:46Are you okay?
12:47Apparently, this was a total accident,
12:49causing actress Anne Hathaway
12:51to burst out laughing at her mistake.
12:53Director Gary Marshall found the moment so charming,
12:56he decided to keep it in the film.
12:57I really don't want to talk about this at the moment, okay?
12:59Number 6.
13:01Farting Lineup
13:02The Usual Suspects
13:03Sometimes a little mistake can help loosen up a set.
13:06At that point, I wasn't scared.
13:08I knew I hadn't done anything they could do me for.
13:12Besides, it was fun.
13:14Such is the case with The Usual Suspects,
13:16in which some bathroom humor
13:17helped unlock the key to an iconic scene.
13:20One of the most iconic moments
13:22from The Usual Suspects
13:23is the infamous lineup scene,
13:25which has been the subject
13:26of behind-the-scenes gossip for some time.
13:28According to writer Christopher McQuarrie,
13:30actor Benicio del Toro could not stop farting,
13:33causing the other actors to break out in laughter.
13:36Number 3. Step forward.
13:47Reportedly, del Toro farted about 12 takes in a row,
13:50and no one could keep it together.
13:52In retrospect,
13:53McQuarrie says he thinks the mistake
13:54actually improved the scene,
13:56making it into the amazing moment it is today.
13:58It was all the cops' fault.
14:00You don't put guys like that into a room together.
14:03Who knows what can happen.
14:04Number 5. Tablecloth.
14:07Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
14:09Jim Carrey makes it onto our list yet again,
14:11with his hilarious portrayal of the Grinch from 2000.
14:14Carrey improvised his heart out when filming this movie,
14:16getting impressively into character.
14:18Kids today.
14:20So desensitized by movies and television.
14:24What do you want?
14:25For instance,
14:26one of the most subtly iconic moments was improvised.
14:28We're talking about the part
14:29where he aggressively pulls a cloth off a table.
14:32The intention was for him to pull all the dishes off with it,
14:34but Carrey accidentally performed a magic trick.
14:36After his accidental miracle,
14:38Carrey returns to the table and decimates it.
14:40It's a hilarious piece of filmmaking trivia,
14:42which makes you appreciate a Christmas favorite even more.
14:44It's not a dress, it's a kilt!
14:48Sicko!
14:49Number 4. Candy Cuts His Hand.
14:52Django Unchained.
14:53One of the marks of a good actor is to keep things moving,
14:56even if something unexpected happens.
14:58The hell you say?
14:59I'm aware this is probably disconcerting news.
15:03But in this case,
15:04if we were Carrey Washington,
15:05we might have a few words for one Leonardo DiCaprio.
15:08During a scene in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained,
15:11DiCaprio's deranged slave owner Calvin Candy
15:14slams his hand on a table and cuts it on a glass.
15:17I'll lay your palms flat on that tabletop!
15:19If you lift those palms off that turtle-shell tabletop,
15:22Mr. Pooch is gonna let loose with both barrels that sawed off!
15:25Apparently, DiCaprio really did cut his hand,
15:28but kept the scene moving.
15:29It was a good choice.
15:30The blood all over Candy's hand
15:32only serves to underscore how crazed the man actually is.
15:35However, there's some debate that the blood he wipes
15:38all over Kerry Washington's face is real.
15:40As the story goes,
15:41Tarantino was inspired when Leo cut his hand
15:44and used fake blood for the rest of the scene.
15:46Here's hoping for Kerry's sake that story is true.
15:49Then we can examine the three dimples
15:51inside the milder's skull!
15:54Now!
15:55Was it gonna be dark?
15:57Huh?
15:57Number 3.
15:59Melting Icing
15:59Mrs. Doubtfire
16:01Robin Williams had a lengthy career
16:02as one of America's most beloved comedy actors,
16:05with his performance in 1993's Mrs. Doubtfire
16:07a particular favorite.
16:09As in a lot of his movies,
16:10there were countless improvisations.
16:12Williams got so into character
16:13that he went into an adult store
16:14dressed as Mrs. Doubtfire,
16:16and no one recognized him.
16:17Do you have anything without veins?
16:20Something without veins would be lovely.
16:22That'd be something.
16:22And I could see this guy behind the counter going,
16:24whoa, this old lady.
16:25This wasn't caught on camera,
16:26but another improvisation with his face
16:28covered in icing was.
16:29The icing wasn't supposed to melt,
16:31but the set lights had other plans.
16:33This resulted in a blob of icing
16:34falling off his face
16:35and grossly into a cup of tea.
16:37We have to take our hats off
16:38to commend Williams
16:39for the remarkable talent he had.
16:41Oh, there you go.
16:42You've got your cream and your sugar now.
16:44It's a little cappuccino.
16:45One drop or two.
16:46Would you like another one?
16:47Oh, there you go.
16:49Number two, body waxing.
16:51The 40-year-old virgin.
16:52It's quite a challenge
16:53to fake waxing someone's body in a movie.
16:55You can probably cover someone in fake hair,
16:57then fake it completely.
16:58It's far cheaper to simply wax someone, though.
17:00But not all actors will enjoy that.
17:02One actor who definitely didn't
17:04was Steve Carell in The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
17:05Not only were Carell's reactions real,
17:08but so were his co-stars.
17:09Oh, I hate you.
17:10I hate you so much.
17:13That one hurt.
17:14That one hurt just as much as the first one.
17:17That's great, man.
17:18You can see Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd
17:20struggling to contain their laughter
17:21throughout the ordeal.
17:22It's hard to feel sorry for Carell, though,
17:24since he co-wrote the script
17:25and it was his idea.
17:26You chose to write this scene for yourself,
17:29which was a form of self-loathing.
17:34Yeah, I thought it would be funny.

17:511. I'm Walkin' Here
17:54Midnight Cowboy
17:56There has been some discussion
17:57over the years
17:58about the truth behind
17:59this particular anecdote.
18:00Cowboy, huh?
18:03Well, sir, I ain't a for-real cowboy.
18:06But I am one hell of a stud.
18:08We think it's probably true,
18:09but we'll leave you to do your own research.
18:11While filming Midnight Cowboy,
18:13stars Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight
18:15are both in a famous scene
18:16where a taxi almost runs them down
18:18on the street.
18:19Hoffman smacks the hood of the cab
18:21and famously yells,
18:22Hey!
18:24I'm walkin' here!
18:25I'm walkin' here!
18:27According to Hoffman,
18:28this taxi's entrance was not planned.
18:30The set was not closed
18:32and the cab really almost ran down
18:34the two actors.
18:35When Hoffman said,
18:36I'm walkin' here,
18:37he meant something along the lines of,
18:39Hey, we're filming a movie.
18:41Luckily for Hoffman,
18:42it turned into one of the most
18:43famous movie moments ever.
18:45Don't worry about that.
18:46Actually, that ain't a bad way
18:47to pick up insurance, you know.
