00:00Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is still as corny as the first one, but without the fun that goes with it.

00:04We're not far from Schumacher's Batman, which hid its abysmal stupidity behind a tribute to the 60s.

00:09And that's exactly what this film does by citing Planet of the Vampires as a reference.

00:13James Wan, on the other hand, seems to be completely absent from the film.

00:15His mastery from the first installment is no longer present, nor is his desire to offer us an impactful mise-en-scène.

00:20Apart from a few flashes of brilliance, the director isn't going to offer us anything very interesting.

00:23just like the story, which doesn't take the time to dwell on the richness of its universe.

00:26We are shown some interesting things, but without taking the time to anchor them in the story.

00:30This makes this universe rich and teeming, yet ultimately very poor.

00:33The film also doesn't introduce any new elements, and simply brings back the same characters.

00:42Arthur Curie is now king of Atlantis, a family man,

00:45and attempts to maintain the fragile balance between the aquatic and terrestrial worlds.

00:48But a new threat emerges: Black Manta is back.

00:51discovers an ancient artifact linked to the mysterious lost kingdom of Necrus,

00:55awakening an ancient evil force.

00:57Okay then, why not?

00:58However, Black Manta doesn't offer anything more than the first film.

01:01Still stuck in this revenge story,

01:03Orme is relegated to the role of sidekick.

01:05and Arthur has lost all the aura that the first film had skillfully established.

01:08It's incredibly frustrating to see a film that turns its heroes into icons to such an extent that you want to see more of them.

01:12only to find him in the end playing the papagato and doing a product placement for Guinness.

01:16But the character whose development will be reduced here is Mera.

01:19Because of the troubles of its portrayer, Amber Heard,

01:22while Warner thinks we're stupid enough to justify his absence by a lack of chemistry with Jason Momoa.

01:26On the verge of being fired, she will ultimately manage to keep her job

01:29thanks to her then-boyfriend, Elon Musk,

01:32who will send a threatening letter to Warner.

02:23because the world knows that Aquaman exists.

02:25So he suspects that he didn't come from nowhere.

02:27But no matter, the DC Extended Universe ends for good with this film.

02:30and especially with that final scene,

02:32where Orme eats a burger with... cockroach.

02:35A beautiful metaphor to describe this cinematic universe,

02:38Delicious on paper, but was ruined by vermin.

02:41The novelty of the first Aquaman has worn off.

02:43Where the first film was captivated by its extravagance and generosity,

02:47This sequence seems repetitive.

02:48The art direction remains solid, but without any innovation.

02:55This context of the end of a saga directly affects the reception of the film.

02:58perceived less as an ambitious sequel than as a forced epilogue.

03:01A final stand in a world already brain-dead,

03:04through rather stupid choices,

03:05such as releasing this sequel so late,

03:07such as producing the final films in this universe in absolute chaos,

03:10without a clear vision,

03:11through rewrites, reshoots, and release delays,

03:15and especially by Warner's choices to highlight characters

03:17which were clearly not a priority in designing a coherent saga.

03:21Instead of focusing on Cyborg, Batman, Justice League 2,

03:25No, let's make three movies about the Shazam universe.
