00:00Hi and welcome to Kappa Nature Talk. I am Raja Lakshmi, a psychology graduate and a behavior specialist from Kappa.
00:13I am here to help you understand about social and emotional development in children.
00:20What is social and emotional development in children?
00:23Social and emotional development is how children learn to connect, express feelings and manage their emotions,
00:31which is a building block for maintaining a healthy relationship in future.
00:36So, a child's social and emotional development from birth to age 3 is considered as very important
00:44because it directly impacts the long-term brain structure as well as resulting to the behavioral patterns through adulthood.
00:56So, I will tell you a key milestones that should be achieved during the early childhood in both social and emotional domain.
01:05First, when we talk about the social domain, the child should maintain a eye contact as well as have a social smile.
01:13Social smile means that when somebody smiles to the child, the child should smile back.
01:19Next one, the child has to interact well with parents or caregivers and siblings as well as peers.
01:27So, when we consider about the play, so the child should have an interactive play with its peers or with the family members
01:36as well as the child should show interest in playing such as taking turns, sharing as well as following instructions.
01:46When we consider about the emotional domain, so in the emotion domain, the child should recognize and understand how others feel and also about their own emotions.
02:01The child should learn to regulate their emotions, for example, how to calm themselves down when they are upset.
02:09If the child does not maintain any eye contact, if the child does not have any social smile or if the child is finding any difficulty to express their emotions.
02:19So, Kappar, the pediatric center will help the child to build confidence and emotional strength.
