Electricity will be free for three hours in the middle of the day in certain areas from July next year. Under a new government initiative called the 'solar sharer' scheme, retailers will be required to offer free power during the hours when there is often more electricity generated than is being used. The peak body for electricity retailers has criticised the 'shock' move. CEO of the Australian Energy Council Louisa Kinnear says it's not a new concept.
