00:00scientists created artificial muscles which give humanoid robots never before seen strength
00:06once again scientists have created something to give humanoid robot skills that no human possesses
00:11without asking themselves if it is truly a good idea this time engineers in south korea developed
00:17an artificial muscle that can lift more than 4 000 times its own weight and it can be used by
00:23humanoid robots researchers have developed soft artificial muscles strong enough to lift massive
00:28weights potentially enabling humanoid robots to match the strength of nearly 20 men while soft
00:35artificial muscles hold tremendous promise for applications in robotics wearable devices and
00:41medical assistive technologies that require human-like interaction their widespread use has
00:46been limited by an inherent trade-off they tend to be either highly flexible or capable of exerting
00:51significant force but not both simultaneously the scientists wrote in a release announcing the results
00:58of their study the researchers managed to overcome these limitations by engineering a composite muscle
01:03that becomes stiff when bearing heavy loads and softens when it needs to contract they report that
01:09in its stiffened state this artificial muscle can support roughly 4 000 times its own weight then when
01:16returned to a softened state it can be stretched up to 12 times its original length the artificial muscle
01:23weighing 1.25 grams can support 5 kilograms endure over twice the strain of human muscles and deliver 30
01:30times more energy per unit volume marking significant progress this research overcomes the fundamental
01:36limitation where traditional artificial muscles are either highly stretchable but weak or strong but
01:41stiff said lead study author hun oi jong a professor of mechanical engineering at the olsen national
01:48institute of science and technology our composite material can do both opening the door to more
01:54versatile soft robots wearable devices and intuitive human machine interfaces if we weren't doomed before
02:02we are getting very close to it now the funny thing is we might not even know it until it's too late
