00:00Over the coming weeks Sydney's newest art precinct White Bay Power Station will
00:10host artists from all over Australia competing for the ultimate prize a
00:15life-changing Commission to hang in the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra
00:19this is one of the biggest moments of my life right now they will take on the
00:24challenge to paint some of Australia's most famous faces and with only four
00:36hours to complete their portraits the clock will be ticking excited just to
00:44paint with other people like I'm so used to just painting by myself like a loser
00:49if you want some inspiration to get my earrings in there might be a tax
00:54deduction each week one artist will be selected to progress to the semi-final
01:01her pencil work is quite frankly astounding this is masterful the time is moving
01:08way faster than I would like it to but it's gonna happen
01:12judging is director of the National Portrait Gallery Australia Brie Pickering
01:20I look at a lot of portraits that's what I do what I'm looking for is an artist
01:25that can draw out the inner humanity of their sitter tell us something that that
01:30we didn't know about them before associate professor of art history at
01:33ANU Robert Wellington I'm really excited to see what the artist will bring to this
01:39competition to create something that's more than just a lightness something a
01:42little more unexpected and award-winning artist Abdul Abdulah I think the
01:47toughest thing about this competition is the four-hour time limit when I'm
01:50painting I have months to do one painting but for these guys they're in the
01:53room in front of an audience there's all this pressure and they have to have it
01:56finished by the end of the day three hours to go one hour to go time is up let's
02:02see some art artists turn your easels
02:08see some art artists turn your eyes to go to the end of the day
02:13oh
02:15it's really lovely really lovely
02:19you're so beautiful Jimmy thank you so is you
02:22do we get your tissue no so which of our artists will have the talent
02:28oh oh oh wow there is something in every single one of them that resonates and time management skills
02:38just pick one to take out the title
02:45oh the winner of portrait artist of the year is
03:00today is the first of our heats with nine artists competing four professionals and
03:07five amateurs from around Australia I'm just here to give it a crack the only
03:12training I've ever had is as a barista this is wild this is like one of the
03:20biggest moments of my life right now sorry the plan is to I don't have a plan
03:28each artist submitted a self-portrait that earned their place in today's heat deciding which artists
03:39will go through to the semi-final are our judges all right team first up today we have Lottie who is a
03:47country girl from Wagga and although she's untrained she's already sold paintings to Bella and Gigi Hadid
03:53wow
03:53what I'm really loving about this work is the nature of the storytelling behind it
04:00it's not a perfect likeness but the little curl in the lips the glint in the eye there's a cheekiness to
04:08this personality that starts to come through you know so she's giving us more than the plane of the
04:14picture which is what we want in a portrait Vaughan is a construction manager in WA and he works with charcoal
04:22there are a lot of different techniques going on here there is an element of a kind of a collage
04:28and you can see that Vaughan is a really good draftsman there's a real masculine energy about
04:32this painting which I think is quite interesting Emanuel paints with coffee and I believe you know
04:41that I've known Emanuel since he was in high school many many years ago now back when he used to paint
04:46with Milo I can't wait for you guys to meet him he's got an infectious positive energy a really
04:53interesting story here's an artist with garden heritage working in coffee and I think that that
04:59must be significant yeah I would agree this is Jasmine who is a state basketballer and always
05:05incorporates an animal into her paintings the artist I think of first of course is Frida Kahlo a Mexican
05:11painter who works with animal form to give a sense of the inner life of the sitter Dan paints on cardboard
05:20and exclusively uses house paints I saw Daniel in the Archibald finals in 2016 and it was a really
05:27beautiful painting yeah there's a definitely an energy to this work I'm guessing Daniel works quite
05:33quickly and possibly messily so I want you to watch out Robert I do not want your clothes getting painted on
05:45so Natalie as a live wedding artist she's working very very quick but this is a complex picture some
05:52of it is very linear and drawn and other parts of it have been worked up for me she's bringing a sense of
05:57magic it's a sense of the world of anime Hiroshi who is a hair stylist he actually calls himself the
06:06Michelangelo of hair you can see in this self-portrait that the hair is important the beautiful silver and
06:13black that's going on there it does draw your face to it in the way that he's lit his forehead as well
06:19all right here we have Jimmy who is a rock star turned tattooist turned painter who studied fine
06:26arts in Florence Jimmy is a really really slick painter and that left hand is beautiful and he's
06:34sort of pensive but it's a little bit blue steel as well he's very handsome I don't like sitting
06:39directly thanks to him it draws comparisons Jamie who is a high school art teacher very delicate painting
06:48this one isn't it I think there's not a lot of room for mistakes with Jamie's practice if she's
06:54painting in this style today it could go wrong because this looks like kind of painting that you
06:59have to do in a quiet room our nine artists are split into groups of three in just four hours and in
07:17front of an audience each trio will be creating a portrait of a celebrity who's each brought in an
07:23object to help the artist get some insight into their personality now I would love this guest to
07:29cook all of my meals she has graced the small screen for almost three decades regularly appearing on the
07:38Great Australian Bake Off MasterChef but you might know her best from ABC's The Cook and the Chef can you
07:45please welcome the Honourable Maggie Beer
07:47are you excited I'm nervous are you
08:14I'm excited lots of feelings now what have you brought for your item today oh well I've bought
08:25a rather tarnished copper bowl copper it's the most amazing medium to be able to whisk egg whites
08:34and it's 35 years old I bought in Paris it's sort of signified buying the right piece of equipment at
08:43the right place at the right time in life your food is often the subject how do you feel with eyes
08:50being on you this time that's why I'm nervous sitting still is not the skill I have but if you ask me I
08:59will as much as I care our next guest had a very successful career as an art director and designer in New York London and Sydney and then at 40 he decided I'm going to try painting and became extremely successful at that too he's had 51 man shows had major exhibitions all over the world and currently one of his pieces is hanging at the National Portrait Gallery right now
09:29the renowned artist Ken Doan
09:36I can't imagine how nervous the artists must feel like actually painting you yeah well I don't know it's just another bloke
09:51now Ken your personal item is a shell do you want to talk to us about why you brought this
10:06this is a shell from the Caribbean and this shell it's got a bit of paint on it I like shells I like underwater I like the structure of the shell
10:09we've got a lot of young artists here and up and coming ones what advice would you give them I don't sit in front of something and try and paint what it looks like I'm more about what it feels like although presumably with a portrait it would need to be reasonably
10:27you know what my head looks like what my head looks like I'm more about what it looks like I'm more about what it feels like I'm more about what it feels like I'm more about what it feels like although presumably with a portrait it would need to be reasonably you know what my head looks like
10:42well thanks Ken thanks very much for joining us we really appreciate it
10:46now I would not want to be seen on the dance floor with this next guest she is an absolute triple threat who has won five championship titles in salsa and commercial dance can you please welcome the yellow wiggle Sahai Hawkins
11:04I love your makeup thank you nice to meet you nice to meet you nice to meet you yeah what's your name I'm Jamie nice to meet you Jamie nice to meet you all hi guys
11:27now what have you brought for your item today this is the book that my mum made me my adoption story so just shows me everything about Ethiopia and my dancing and pretty much my life up to the age of six so it's very close to my heart
11:45that is so gorgeous well we hope to have a beautiful portrait of you by the end of the day thank you I'm very very excited to see the portrait
11:57while our sitters won't see their portraits until the four hours are complete
12:04they will get to choose their favorite to take home
12:08artists your challenge is about to begin
12:12you have four hours to create your portraits
12:17and your time starts
12:21now
12:23good luck
12:33good day everyone
12:34how are you feeling
12:35good good

12:41I'd love to just take some photos of you
12:43is that alright
12:44thank you
12:47thank you love
12:48thanks Jasmine
12:49I love the colour of your dress by the way
12:51well
12:52that
12:53that's right
12:56may I take your photo Ken
12:58whatever you want
13:00okay
13:01perfect
13:02thank you Ken
13:04our nine artists must create portraits in their own unique style using any medium they choose
13:11do I have to put the bowl in?
13:13is it compulsory?
13:15whether or not they include the sitters personal object is up to them
13:19I do things a bit differently
13:21yes
13:22so my portraits I capture like your animal persona
13:26so
13:27okay
13:28so I guess I'll just ask you a few questions
13:30yes
13:31how like how would you describe yourself in three words
13:34I'm a cook
13:36I'm obsessive
13:38um
13:39I love life
13:40did you say I love wine?
13:42life
13:43life
13:44okay
13:45wine as well
13:46me too
13:47for a spot in the semi-final it's not just about technique
13:52the judges are looking for a piece of work that captures the spirit of the sitter
13:57are you a mess sir?
14:09yeah
14:10maybe out of the splash zone
14:12let's hope
14:14Daniel Butterworth is an accomplished artist from Melbourne
14:18and was an Archibald finalist in 2016
14:21despite his global success
14:24Daniel still paints on used cardboard with house paints
14:29purchased at his local hardware store
14:33I'm a bit of a connoisseur of cardboard
14:35can I ask what was in this box then?
14:37yeah KTM motorbike
14:38oh really?
14:39yeah
14:40yeah
14:41so
14:42I was working at this motorbike shop
14:44it was a young artist and I couldn't afford canvases anymore
14:47that's when I started painting on cardboard
14:50but yeah
14:51you don't need much
14:52there's as many different ways to paint as there are people in the world
14:56and you've worked so quickly
14:58how do you plan on like pacing out the four hours
15:00or do you think that you'll be finished earlier?
15:02I probably will be finished earlier
15:05oh man can't wait
15:06ah thank you
15:07I won't shake your hand, have a look at it
15:09yeah
15:10hmm
15:23let's paint Ken
15:27okay
15:28Lottie Ray is from the country town of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales
15:36formerly the owner of the local cafe
15:39she traded her apron for a paintbrush
15:42to follow her artistic aspirations
15:44she now has an online store where her paintings often sell out within minutes
15:49you're gonna ask about the milk crate
15:52no
15:53well I normally paint on the floor
15:55at like in my studio
15:56yeah
15:57I'll sit on the floor to paint
15:58and um
15:59when these guys asked if I wanted an easel
16:01I said yes
16:02but then I panicked
16:03and I was like I've never used an easel
16:05ever
16:06so I was like oh
16:07a milk crate will do
16:08low stress
16:10so what's your first steps normally?
16:14oh
16:15depends on the day
16:16I don't know
16:17portraits aren't my bread and butter
16:19I've only done maybe three in my life
16:22but I've got a real thing for nostalgic Australia
16:25and I was very excited when um
16:28they said Ken Doan
16:29that was awesome
16:30so it's pretty cool
16:31yeah
16:32still got one of your pillow slips from the 80s Ken on the bed
16:35thank you
16:36do you reckon you'll have a go at the cardigan?
16:38yeah for sure
16:39look at this palette
16:41as if that's not Ken's palette
16:43yeah
16:44that's awesome
16:51how does this feel Maggie?
16:53feels surreal
16:55I'm usually the doer
16:57yeah
16:59and not painting
17:00that's right
17:01of course
17:05I'm so interested to see what's happening here
17:07but I don't want to ask too many questions
17:08I don't want to give the game away for Maggie
17:10but
17:12without being too cryptic
17:14yeah
17:15so I kind of um
17:16prompted Maggie with a few questions
17:18okay okay
17:19um
17:20to get a feel for who she was
17:22so
17:23I've gone with
17:25ah
17:26okay okay okay
17:27okay okay
17:28yeah
17:29shhhh
17:30shhh
17:33ssssshh
17:35Shhh
17:36top secret
17:37Maggie don't have a jump scare when I turn the canvas around
17:39Jasmine Forcadea balances art alongside her fashion marketing career
17:43and playing professional basketball.
17:46She focuses on painting character rather than likeness
17:50and her self-portrait using acrylics
17:53expresses what it means to be comfortable in her own skin.
17:57Maggie, do you have a favourite food?
17:59Oh yes, sea urchin.
18:01Oh!
18:02And second favourite would be any offal you could give me.
18:06Any what?
18:06Awful.
18:08Brain, sweetbread, super hot.
18:10Oh yes, delicious.
18:22It's so cool.
18:23I think I found the shot, although that one's got...
18:37I am feeling a lot of pressure to make the right choice very quickly.
18:46The image is the number one and I'm not very good at making decisions at the best of time.
18:52So, you've got this and it's going to be okay.
18:55It will be.
18:56It will be.
18:57Just pick one!
19:01Jamie Paul is a high school art teacher and a passionate animal activist.
19:06She works almost exclusively with black and white watercolour.
19:11Her self-portrait took 70 hours to complete.
19:14Hi, Jamie.
19:18Hello, how are you going?
19:19Good, how are you going?
19:22I'm deeply in decision mode, so I've lost, I've lost time.
19:28Yeah.
19:29This is a really short, compressed project.
19:32Yes.
19:32But the most important thing is to get Sahai's essence, right?
19:36I know likeness is your thing.
19:37Yeah.
19:38But let those shoulders relax because you know they need to to get this portrait done.
19:41Exactly.
19:42Okay, well, all right.
19:44I'm rooting for you.
19:56Artist, you are one hour down.
19:59We have three hours to go.
20:03Really?
20:03Wow.
20:04That was quick, eh?
20:06For me anyway, I'm not sure about you.
20:11Okay, who are you feeling is the most ahead, I suppose?
20:18Yeah, Daniel got a lot of paint on the cardboard very, very quickly.
20:23He's working with house paint, he's working on cardboard.
20:26So I'm quite interested to see what happens.
20:30Lottie, she's not the most naturalistic painter, but there is an energy in what she's doing.
20:36And the painting that's happening in the room today, I'm finding very exciting.
20:42Jasmine's actually gone interesting.
20:44I'm actually getting a little bit Egyptian mythology with these person-animal hybrids
20:48that Jasmine's bringing through.
20:50Yeah, this is an interesting choice.
20:52Can she get the animal to feel like Maggie?
20:55That will be the question.
20:59We've got a manual painting in coffee.
21:02I don't know if the blend makes a difference, but how's he going?
21:05Well, it smells great.
21:06It does smell great.
21:07That's really nice.
21:09Coffee is just one element.
21:10Symbols are really important for Emmanuel, so we'll see some nice symbols come through
21:14in the finished work.
21:20Now, Jamie is a little behind.
21:24I've made this so hard for myself.
21:26Yeah, and Jamie's work takes time, so we are in trouble here.
21:32Now, Natalie, does she have an advantage because she is a live wedding painter?
21:40I would say absolutely she has an advantage because she's just used to the fact that sitters
21:45aren't necessarily going to stay still for very long.
21:47Yeah, what will be interesting with Natalie is she builds up layers.
21:51There's some gold leaf coming.
21:52She's got plaster on her stand.
21:55She really understands colour, bright colour, and that is bringing out all of Sahai's wonderful
22:00personality, and she's making a really beautiful painting.
22:03Oh, thank you.
22:04Hello.
22:06I think you're my dream sitter.
22:08Oh, so happy to be painting you today.
22:10Oh, thank you.
22:11Oh, my gosh.
22:12I remember when you were announced as the yellow Wiggle, and the public persona with Wiggles is
22:18obviously very happy, very joyful.
22:20Would you say that's how you are as well?
22:22Oh, absolutely.
22:23As you can tell, when we talk, we've been very energetic.
22:25Very bubbly.
22:26Yeah.
22:27So, so amazing.
22:28Oh, thank you.
22:30Natalie Ding is a live wedding painter in Sydney.
22:34Her self-portrait took 18 months to complete and incorporates acrylics,
22:40oil paints, pastels, gold leaves, and glitter.
22:46Hi there, Natalie.
22:47How are things going?
22:48Hello, Rob.
22:49Things are going well.
22:50I'm just blocking the colours at the moment.
22:52Yeah, fantastic.
22:52This is what we call the ugly stage.
22:54It doesn't look ugly to me, I have to say.
22:56It's beautiful.
22:56It's full of colour.
22:58That yellow and the purple, complementary colours.
23:01Is that, are you thinking about these things as you go, or is it instinct?
23:04Instinct, along with theory, of course.
23:07Fantastic.
23:07Like, cooler colours at the back, warmer colours at the front to bring the person forward.
23:12Yeah.
23:12Kind of sort of looks like someone, so that's a good sign.
23:2762-year-old Hiroshi Yoshino, a hairstylist originally from Japan, only started painting seven years ago.
23:38Hiroshi paints from life, taking no photos, and his self-portrait was done in his bathroom,
23:44using a mirror as his reference.
23:45So you started quite quickly.
23:49You've got a lot of paint on straight away, and you've got the form really quickly.
23:52Yeah, it's a great sitter, first of all.
23:54Yeah, he's been, he's a very professional sitter.
23:55Yeah, that's great.
23:56I don't see any difference between cutting hair and the painting.
24:00My answer is always, I use the highest technology ever developed, which is our eyes.
24:06That is, that makes sense, that makes sense.
24:24Do you drink coffee?
24:26Um, surprisingly, I don't really drink coffee.
24:28I'm assuming you're a big coffee drinker.
24:31Do you have a certain coffee order?
24:32Cappuccino.
24:34I love it.
24:35I used to say I had a hot chocolate to keep myself brown.
24:38Some people didn't know how to react to the joke.
24:44Emmanuel Asante is an art teacher and public speaker living in Western Sydney.
24:50His self-portrait, titled Waiting is Wasting, was inspired by refugees in detention centres.
25:01Emmanuel, brother, how are you, man?
25:03Good, I've been good. How have you been?
25:04Oh, very good.
25:05I've seen you work with oil paint, with acrylic paint, with pencil, all sorts of things.
25:10What is different about working with coffee? Like, what makes it harder or easier?
25:15Um, what makes the coffee harder is it's always wet, sticky, shiny, so you don't know when it's dry.
25:21So, in order to draw across, you might smudge it.
25:23Oh.
25:24So that's a little bit of a challenge.
25:25What do you think for the background?
25:27Um, I'm thinking of using the colours in the background, but I'm going to incorporate like symbols from a culture.
25:34Okay, awesome.
25:35Okay, we are halfway.
25:39Two hours to go.
25:40Two hours to go.
25:40Oh, my God.
25:42Two hours to go.
25:42Two hours to go.
25:52Wait, I'm nailing this.
25:53even I'm shocked I feel like that looks like Ken it's got it Ken's vibe I like the pink in it and
26:02the eyes look good but yeah the body's scaring me I'm excited for the cardigan the cardigan
26:09will be cool I don't usually paint this fast so it's interesting to see all the colors like mixing
26:18them together I've made this so hard for myself I wanted to already be started on my canvas board
26:27by now trying not to be stressed I think I'm done can I turn around and show you Maggie no as much as
26:42I would love that dad Daniel I hear you're finished yes I am yes all done all done I feel it's at a
26:50point where if I keep working it'll start to look labored if you're a fast painter yes I mean it's
26:55competition you've got an hour and a half to go yep what about doing another one love to you want to
27:00give it another go let's give it another go best one forward absolutely yeah I think that's a fantastic
27:03idea let's try that beautiful thank you my toe I'm gonna do another one of you man I might try a full
27:15figure beautiful thank you
27:33not the first time I've been painted but at my age in this time of the day the danger is falling asleep
27:41I'm not gonna do very tempting
27:45hi Ken because you've had such an amazing career is there any bucket list items you still want to
27:51tick off look I've always wanted to do an aircraft carrier be amazing I like to do all the planes like
27:59parrots very bright how long would it take to paint an aircraft carrier in one of your designs
28:03probably longer than I've got left what are you hoping to see from the paintings do you have a preferred
28:09style or well look it's always what the painter feels about you and of course I can see them from
28:17this side I can see how hard they worked I can understand some of the decisions that they had to
28:24make was it on purpose to wear a very complicated cardigan just to make it a little harder for the
28:27artists or I wanted to give them a bit of color I wanted to see how they might handle it but I
28:33I can't wait to see the end result
28:35I'm stressing out
28:39I'm gonna have nightmares out of this bloody cardigan
28:43Jimmy May is an established tattoo artist and musician
28:50his self-portrait was created with oils on canvas after attending art school in Florence
29:00hi Jimmy hello tell me about why you chose this pose Ken's looking quite haughty here
29:06yeah as soon as he walked into the room I sort of got that like stoic vibe from him so I wanted to
29:12portray that boss man singer artist yeah don't mess it up kids yeah okay I look forward to seeing how it
29:18comes together thank you
29:31hi Maggie how are you holding up I'm doing really well I assume it's just art's very similar to cooking in that the results are very subjective like the taste buds like yes absolutely I'm a very selfish person I cook to please myself
29:43nice I've always thought if I love something everyone else is going to love it
29:49have you ever done like flavors that you thought would work and then we're like that not this my very first ice cream I did was bitter almond and quince and I thought everyone would love it
29:59yeah right and it didn't run thanks for coming we really appreciate it
30:05I love the work that you do oh thank you I really do I might get you to record it on my phone so I can see it to my parents if that's okay
30:11I am well behind what I usually would be I'm hoping like within the next hour it should start to look
30:23um less like a blob
30:27is all I'm gonna promise I'm sorry
30:29I'm not calling you that
30:31I'm sorry
30:33Vaughn Roberts is an emerging artist from Perth
30:37his submission using acrylics and charcoal reflects the rare vulnerability he felt completing this self-portrait
30:45yeah
30:47things are coming out now I'm starting to see you're really working into that surface you've got some chalk here
30:52yeah
30:53how are you feeling about it
30:54I'm okay I just want to try and really start to exaggerate some of the tones and the shadows now and
31:00start to really try and make a pop and give it some life
31:03I think I'll be happy enough to show you
31:06I look forward to it
31:09please don't yell at me
31:11okay next step
31:21first strike
31:26hello
31:27today
31:28how are you holding up so high
31:29I'm doing well
31:30I'm very happy that you're here to chat with me because I think that no talking for a little bit
31:34I wasn't so great with it
31:35do you want me asking a bit more about the book
31:37yes
31:38my mum made it for me actually
31:39oh wow
31:40this is my mum here Robin
31:41hi
31:42hi
31:43tell me and say hi
31:44welcome welcome
31:45hi
31:46might be a silly question but is there a favourite part of the book or a bit that really means something to you
31:49um
31:50I think a lot of my favourite parts of the books are like for example this page with my dad
31:54I love just seeing the candid photos of us but also my parents visited Ethiopia a few times before they adopted me
32:01so there's a bunch of photos of me so there's a bunch of photos of that these are me with a lot of the other children that were adopted so we've got a lot of stories
32:08now are we thinking a sequel what are we going to make it a trilogy how many books are going to be
32:12yeah
32:13that's enough
32:14that's been
32:15I spent a lot of time doing that
32:16okay right
32:17my mum hasn't written one book about me
32:19so if you're watching this mum please get on to that
32:21yeah
32:23artists we've got one hour to go
32:25I'm excited I don't know about you three
32:33this is wild man I can't wait to see this one too
32:36just a bit of fun with the fabric
32:38really the pressures off on the second one
32:40you'd think wouldn't you
32:41yeah I guess I guess
32:47someone better check Ken's pulse
32:50he hasn't moved for a while
32:55I've done it all today in a very rushed way
33:00but it's not looking too bad
33:02biggest challenge with black and white
33:05is once I put a layer down
33:08it's hard to take it away
33:10so it's a dance between not enough water and too much water and hoping you don't make a puddle
33:17you're good Vaughan
33:27um I don't know mate
33:29you're fighting that is it a fight
33:31I think so yeah
33:32just make sure you win hey
33:34I'm sorry to interrupt
33:35um I'm so sorry to tell you this but it's upside down
33:49um
33:51do you want to tell me why it's upside down?
33:53by turning a painting upside down
33:56you see this is not like a head
33:59it's just a patterns
34:01right
34:02that's another way of seeing it
34:03yeah
34:04did you try um keeping yours the same way
34:06and asking Ken Doan to stand on his head?
34:08that was a very very difficult thing
34:11yeah
34:14artists you have ten minutes to go
34:17ten minutes
34:18just one tiny bit of gold leaf left
34:34which are you going with?
34:36I don't know
34:37hard decision
34:39there's something about both of them that I really enjoy
34:48but I still like your head
34:52so I think I'm going to go with the head
34:53oh
34:56should we sign it?
34:57do we sign it?
34:58I guess you could always sign afterwards if you wanted to
35:00yeah yeah yeah yeah
35:01don't waste your time on your signature
35:03yeah
35:04artist your time is up

35:26I can finally move again I feel pretty good
35:29I actually feel a little bit stiff but I can start wiggling a little bit now
35:32I've got my wiggle boots on so I'm definitely ready to do it
35:35yeah
35:40yeah

40:24good handling of this jacket
40:27very complicated
40:31yeah nice picture
40:32thank you
40:34the nose is ahead of the ears
40:37so it has that dimension
40:39that you talked about
40:40yeah
40:44yeah you've handled the
40:45Missoni Cardi in a very interesting way
40:47good
40:48you're a clever boy

41:07but if I have to choose one
41:10it's this one
41:11it looks good
41:12thank you
41:14it looks good
41:15thank you
41:17it looks good
41:18thank you
41:19thank you
41:23now the sitters have chosen their favourite artworks
41:26it's up to the judges to evaluate today's nine portraits
41:30and choose one artist to go through to the semi-final
41:34we had a really interesting day in this pod with Sihai
41:39so let's talk about Natalie
41:41today you know she's created I think a dynamic and exciting portrait of somebody who is absolutely full of life and energy
41:49it does capture Sihai's public persona in a really beautiful way which is how people know her
41:55it was quite joyful to watch this work come together
41:57I think that's a great word Brie like joyful I think this is a joyful picture
42:01and I think there is a spirit in here which I feel really captures Sihai
42:06Jamie she's managed to achieve a good likeness in a modest scale
42:12I would say it's unfinished
42:14I think she's captured Sihai's gentle energy in a really lovely way
42:20and I think with more time we would see an absolutely delightful portrait
42:24I think Emmanuel is really really talented
42:29but I don't know if today was his day
42:32the work is quite small and I think there's a really good likeness
42:36but I think he had the capacity to go quite a bit bigger
42:39he could have been a little bit more ambitious
42:41in terms of likeness Jimmy's definitely got the haughtiness of Ken or the you know the senior artist is definitely present and I suspect Jimmy was a touch intimidated by Ken
43:02well that's at least what's coming through in the portrait
43:04I think Jimmy is really good at hands
43:07yes
43:08he's a hands specialist
43:09you're right the hands are forward
43:11Jimmy's a good technician
43:13there's a lot going on here
43:15but there's not a lot of warmth
43:17Lottie is a kind of painter whose work you need to see in person
43:24the way that she creates texture
43:26Ken brought a shell in today didn't he as his object
43:28now I actually think we see that in a funny way that spirit of the reef
43:33I see sails of a ship so familiar in Ken's work in the markings of his cardigan
43:38there's something kind of maritime and sea like about the colour
43:42she has an innate ability to know how to put form and colour together to make a really compelling picture
43:49Hiroshi was telling me that he wanted to really privilege the face
43:53so for him the cardigan was really secondary
43:57he didn't take advantage of all the colours in the space
44:00didn't take advantage necessarily of Ken and his personality
44:04I think it's a lovely portrait but not ambitious enough for me
44:11Jasmine, Daniel and Vaughan had the magnificent opportunity to paint Maggie Beer
44:16I think we can see in the way that Vaughan has handled Maggie's hair that he has a really deft touch
44:23with this delicate medium of chalk and charcoal
44:27but overall the proportions and the likeness just fall short
44:32Daniel, he did two portraits today
44:36yes
44:38and he has selected the first
44:40I think the second painting was better
44:42there was something more for me of the spirit in Maggie
44:46but there's a lot of technical proficiency here that I'm enjoying
44:50and that gritty realism capturing a fleshy likeness
44:54I like that he's not interested in flattering his subject
44:57yes
44:59and look at that earring, it's quite a complicated object
45:01but then just with a few marks he's emulated that and that just says Maggie's earring
45:05I think he's done a really wonderful job
45:08bold choice of the day has to go to Jasmine
45:13Jasmine chose to paint Maggie in a feline form
45:18and took the quite surprising step of not even showing Maggie's face
45:22but instead replacing that with the head of a lioness
45:26there were some interesting choices made like giving Maggie bare feet when she didn't have bare feet
45:30these types of things really separate the painting from the person
45:33it's an interesting and cool and funny painting
45:36but it's not necessarily Maggie beer
45:38how far can you stretch a portrait?
45:40I'd say this is
45:42stretchy
45:44maybe just a little too stretchy
45:51Before announcing the winner of today's heat
45:54the judges will reveal their top three portraits of the day
45:58Congratulations, you survived the day and created a wonderful variety of work
46:07The judges have looked at your portraits and have chosen their top three
46:11top three
46:13the first artist is
46:19Daniel
46:30The second artist is
46:32Lottie
46:43and the third artist chosen is
46:49Natalie
46:54It's time for the artist to discover who will have the chance to paint a life-changing commission
47:14to hang in the National Portrait Gallery
47:17Daniel, Lottie, Natalie
47:20Congratulations on getting this far in the competition
47:23but only one person can go forward
47:26The artist chosen demonstrated the ability to tell a story in their painting
47:30a strong connection to the sitter
47:32and ultimately the judges just found it a really compelling piece of work
47:35and that artist is
47:38Lottie
47:41Lottie
47:43What?
47:45Thank you
47:47What the hell?
47:50Lottie struck gold today
47:52She was up against some real professionals
47:54but her application of paint was really fantastic
47:57Lottie's was a little bit more of an adventure
47:59and the spark and energy that she created
48:02for me it was an obvious choice
48:03Great birthday
48:04Thank you, beautiful
48:05I appreciate it
48:07Thank you
48:09Thank you, thank you so much
48:11Thanks guys
48:12I'm very shocked
48:14It's a win for country kids
48:16We don't get anything like this where we are
48:19If there's little kids out there in the bush that want to have a crack
48:22they can too because I certainly wasn't expecting to clean this up
48:26Next time
48:41Marco Pomeres
48:45Are you as critical of other things as you are of film?
48:48Pretty critical of everything
48:50Mark Cole Smith
48:52I think you're used to pouting for the camera
48:57I don't know what you mean
48:59Oh, the blue steel
49:01The fabulous Courtney Act
49:07Which artist will take the next spot
49:10This is a window into a story that I really want to climb through and see
49:14In the semi-final
49:16They're beautiful
49:18Oh, oh, oh
49:21I'm
