00:00Today on Build for Off-Road the Jeep JK is back and we're gonna take the body and the frame and
00:09we're gonna do this and then we're gonna do this and this and some of these we also might do some
00:16of this these thingies and that thing all that and more today in the shop we've got our ultimate
00:29two-door Jeep JK project back if you remember the plan here is to basically take everything that's
00:33cool about a rock bouncer and everything that's cool about the two-door Jeep JK and basically stick
00:38them together to build the ultimate off-road machine now last time we focused a lot on the
00:43chassis getting the suspension taken care of the new 6.4 Hemi in place as well as a transmission
00:47transfer case and some killer bomb-proof axles well today is the day that we're gonna get the body
00:54back on the frame we're gonna deal with clearance for these monster 42 inch tall tires and make sure
01:00everything looks good because we still want this thing to function like a Jeep even though it's
01:05gonna be ready to throw down hardcore whenever we need it to
01:08because we've swapped the engine in this JK and upgraded it to the 6.4 Hemi we need to deal with
01:23the cooling package now one of the nice things about using a Jeep like the Jeep JK as our base
01:28vehicle is you can get direct replacement upgraded cooling packages specific to our engine swap from
01:35cold case radiators now this is a full upgrade to our existing radiator it has an extruded aluminum
01:42core to maximize efficiency yet it still has all the provisions to reuse all the factory items like
01:48the factory fan shroud factory oil cooler and factory AC condenser so it's a 100 direct fit but at the same
01:55time the inlet and the outlet are spec specific for our Hemi so not only do we get to upgrade the cooling
02:01performance with this all-aluminum radiator but also we don't have to worry about building a whole bunch
02:05of custom radiator hoses because this is designed to work with our engine
02:35the one downfall to the JKs has always been the sheet metal is very very thin and that's because
02:47when they built this vehicle they're really focused on overall weight of the vehicle to try to maximize
02:52their fuel economy so the problem is if you ever tried to bolt any type of tube fender onto these
02:57vehicles you're really just bolting it onto this almost like 20 gauge sheet steel and so often then
03:03when you would hit something on the trail with the tube fender you'd end up just bending the fender
03:07underneath so what we're going to do is we're going to install these full fender replacements now this
03:11is all nice thick steel it's basically just going to go onto the side of the jeep it's going to completely
03:16replace this stock fender and it will give us the protection that we need room for our larger wheel
03:22and tire package and it's going to look super cool too we got to take some screws out
03:26boom oh yeah so you can see now we actually have some protection for the body this is a lot thicker
03:49we do have to do some trimming though this is the original fender flare mount so it's going to have to
03:54go away uh and then yes we can see this structure underneath but the plan will be just to black that
03:58out there is a pinch weld out down here at the bottom that sticks out a little bit past the fender
04:03but i'm pretty sure that the tire is far enough forward and i don't want to cut this pinch weld
04:07a hundred percent away because i don't want to open up the interior of the body let water get in there so
04:12i think the plan will basically be just to scallop this basically make it a little bit round get rid of
04:16this hard point that'll make it look a lot better this hole right here we have these super cool louvers
04:22that'll basically go this goes on the inside of the fender and we can open up these louvers if
04:26we want and then this outside piece just finishes it up this goes on once the fender gets painted
04:31because we're not going to leave it raw steel but we have to mock it up in steel to make sure it all fits
04:36so
04:47for all the areas that i grind on this substructure i'm going to go ahead and seal it up with some
05:10herculiner truck bed coating now truck bed coating is not just for truck beds if you are using on your
05:15truck bed you can use one of these original herculiner truck bed do-it-yourself kits it's
05:21going to come with everything you need to basically have a roll-on finish in the bed of your truck it
05:25will protect it from basically scratches and rust by sealing the metal and keeping it good and safe
05:31but if you're working in an area like we are in behind a fender like this it's great to go ahead
05:35and use the aerosol coating it gives you that same textured coating and once again the same thing
05:40it'll prevent rust seal the metal and give it a nice textured look
05:44but you don't have to use herculiner original truck bed liner kit on truck bed surfaces you can
05:52use it on bumpers fenders under hoods like this anywhere you need a durable textured non-skid
05:59rubber formula the kit also includes the brush so you can use that to cut in on the edge
06:04and then the roller for larger surfaces
06:34today in the shop we are once again working on our throwdown jeep jk and we put the body back on
06:42the chassis mainly because it's time to start figuring out how to get exhaust from the 6.4
06:47hemi out around all these link bars and the only easy way to do that even though it's not easy at
06:53all is to build some type of custom exhaust so when i build a custom exhaust i just get a pile of parts
06:59that i know i'm gonna need so i got a flow master fx muffler so this is a full 409 stainless muffler
07:06with a three inch through perforated tube these mufflers they sound great and i also got a flow
07:12master ufit dual kit now this is designed to fit pretty much any vehicle because it just comes with a
07:18whole bunch of different bends and different exhaust links this is all two and a half inch also 409
07:24stainless and then to connect it all i like to use these v-band clamps these are also from flow master
07:30this kit does come with these slip to fit ends so you could just slide it over the pipe and use a
07:36traditional exhaust clamp on it i don't think that looks as good as a v-band clamp and you know if
07:41you're going to go as far as to spend all this time building a custom exhaust you might as well invest
07:45in some of those v-band clamps i'm going to throw a couple catalytic converters on this one as well
07:49because i also think that takes some of the sound out of the exhaust the exhaust will still sound
07:54good but it won't be as obnoxiously loud as like an open-headed exhaust so the first step is to figure
08:00out where the manifolds dump around the body and then we'll build back from there
08:05and we'll build back from there
08:10oh that's tight
08:12that's tight
08:15that's tight
08:15is tight
08:16I need some more bar
08:18just Dollar
08:19do not
08:21rely on
08:22come on
08:25come on
08:27put
08:28as
08:31give
08:32par
08:33as
08:34oh
08:34as
08:35Whenever I'm building custom exhaust on an engine swap, I always try to either get or get with the engine some of the original factory exhaust, especially if you're using manifolds, because the factory flare that attaches to the manifold is usually attached to a pretty tight radius curve, and it's going to make it easier to fit the exhaust.
09:01The other nice thing is nowadays, OE exhaust is usually high-quality stainless steel, so we can basically weld it all up, clean it up, make it look good, and then it will seamlessly transition into your aftermarket stainless exhaust once you get it all set up in place.
09:16This truck is probably going to end up with a fairly complicated dual exhaust.
09:20Sometimes I'll run it underneath the motor and out the passenger side, but there's so much tight tolerances in this truck for the front driveshaft, I think I'm going to have to sneak it around beside the frame and go back beside the frame.
09:31So this is just a quick tack to see if it's all going to fit.
09:35One of the nicest things about using a Jeep as the base vehicle for a hardcore off-road rig is you get a full interior, but the one problem with pretty much every Jeep is the fact that the factory radio is somewhat lackluster.
09:57It kind of reminds me of something I would have installed back in like 2002.
10:01So every Jeep that I own, I always upgrade the head unit, and this is honestly one of my favorite ones.
10:07This is the Stinger Horizon 12.
10:10This is a 12.8-inch screen that will replace our factory radio.
10:16It comes with a head unit or small brain box, essentially it's going to mount up behind the dash,
10:21and then the radio is replaced by this massive 12.8-inch touchscreen display.
10:26But it also has a bunch of extra features.
10:29We have cameras that will mount on both sides of the Jeeps, of a blind spot camera that will go on both the passenger and driver's side,
10:36and then a night vision backup camera that goes into the back.
10:39We also have USB ports, as well as a small GPS puck for navigation.
10:45It's 100% plug-and-play in these modern Jeeps, so essentially once you hook it up, it will seamlessly integrate with everything.
10:51So when you turn on the turn signal, the screen actually changes over,
10:54and it will show the blind spot camera on the side of the turn signal that you're trying to turn.
10:59I like to use this type of system when I'm out on the trail because I can load up some of my favorite mapping software,
11:04and I get this giant screen to look at because it's Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible.
11:09So I'll have my giant map playing up here, and I don't have to focus on my small little phone.
11:16Because I have a small phone.
11:17So I'll have my giant map playing up here, and I'll have my giant map playing up here, and I'll have my giant map playing up here.
11:47Today in the shop, we're working on our two-door Jeep JK build,
12:07where we're trying to turn this JK into an insane trail machine,
12:12but at the same time, keeping all the creature comforts of driving a newer Jeep.
12:17Now we've already upgraded our infotainment system, and now I want to deal with a problem that happens in all Jeeps.
12:24Carpet in a Jeep is like having carpet in your bathroom.
12:28It may feel good on your feet when you get out of the shower,
12:30but there's some funky stuff growing in there, and it's the same inside a Jeep.
12:35The easy solution for most people is to just take the carpet out.
12:38That way you don't have to worry about it.
12:39The problem is, is then the floor gets hot, it gets noisy, and it just doesn't have that finished look that you want in one of these newer Jeeps.
12:47But we have a fix for it that's even better.
12:51This is the complete ArmorLite flooring replacement system.
12:56So this looks like a rubber floor because that's essentially what it is,
13:01but it's designed to replace all of the carpet inside our Jeep and more
13:05because it actually offers a little bit more protection.
13:08The nice thing is, is it still retains all the factory drain plugs,
13:12so you have access to the drain plugs in the floor of your Jeep.
13:14If you ever get water inside of here, simply pull the plug and it will drain right out.
13:20The other nice thing is the backing on this is not carpet.
13:24This is a polyester backing, and it's mainly designed to prevent that heat transfer
13:29from underneath the vehicle up inside the passenger compartment.
13:32ArmorLite has tested this and measured the temperature on the floor in a Jeep JK.
13:37They saw a temperature of 240 degrees on the floor,
13:40but only 100 degrees on top of their flooring once it's installed.
13:46The nice thing is, it comes in a couple different colors.
13:48You can have this tan or black.
13:50If you want some more customization,
13:52the drain plug covers are offered in a bunch of different colors,
13:54and you can get this for Wranglers, Gladiators, Broncos, and even Tacomas.
14:00And it drops right in.
14:02Watch this.
14:10The polyester insulation on the bottom of the flooring does not absorb water,
14:16so it's mold and mildew resistant.
14:19And all ArmorLite flooring has a lifetime warranty and is made in the USA.
14:25To finish off our ultimate JK build, we're going to be upgrading the lighting,
14:30and we got a pile of stuff from Infinite Off-Road.
14:34Now, Infinite Off-Road has a bunch of different options
14:37if you want to upgrade the lighting on your vehicle.
14:39It starts right here in the middle.
14:41We've got some basically replacement headlights for the JK.
14:44We're going to be installing these.
14:45This can be bought as basically a JK-specific kit,
14:48so you'd get two headlights and two replacement turn signals.
14:51But if you've upgraded your JK to, let's say,
14:54a modern grille that doesn't have the two turn signals,
14:57the headlights themselves have integrated turn signals
15:00that you can use as well, so your vehicle still stays legal.
15:04We're going to add a couple of off-road lights,
15:06these 4.5 by 4.5 inch pods.
15:08These ones are in amber.
15:10You can also get them in white.
15:11But they come with specific brackets for the JK,
15:16or you can order it for the JL, or no brackets, just universal.
15:19Probably the coolest thing that has happened
15:21in the off-road lighting industry lately
15:23has been the fact that you can now control all of this
15:26by using one of these solid-state controllers.
15:29This is a solid-state controller from Infinite Off-Road.
15:32This is an 8-button module, but they offer it as a 4-button or a 12-button.
15:38And the way this works is you simply choose a sticker from the included sticker pack,
15:43place it over the button, and then you wire it through this controller
15:46that goes underneath the hood.
15:48Makes it a lot easier because then you have to take one wire from this controller
15:51inside the vehicle.
15:53Everything else is underneath the hood.
15:54And then you can change what these buttons do.
15:56They can either be on-off, or they can be momentary
15:59if you just need a momentary switch.
16:01I love these.
16:02I use them on all of my rigs.
16:04And then also, to finish it off, we've got the Infinite Off-Road Rock Light Kit.
16:08This is probably the most complete rock light kit that I have ever seen.
16:12You can see you can just open up the box.
16:13Not only does it have a pile of rock lights inside of it in different sizes,
16:18you can order it in either RGB, so you can pick the color of the lights,
16:22or bright white, which is what this kit here is.
16:24It comes with large rock lights, as well as these small rock lights
16:29that are magnetic, and you can control it from either the remote,
16:32you can wire it up to a switch, like the one that's going to come out
16:36of this little solid-state controller, or you can run it off an app on your phone.
16:40Now, you'll often say to me, oh, rock lights are hard to install
16:43because you've got all those wires to hook up and all that kind of stuff.
16:46Well, these come with these little pre-terminated ends that just screw together.
16:50And I'll tell you a story.
16:51Me and my friend Ricky were out four-wheeling one day,
16:54and the sun was starting to go down,
16:55and we knew we were going to be four-wheeling late into the night,
16:58so he thought ahead, and he brought one of these infinite off-road rock light kits,
17:02and we literally installed the rock lights on the side of the trail
17:05just by using these little magnetic lights,
17:08sticking them up underneath my rig,
17:10and we had lights all night long.
17:12It was great.
17:13That's how easy it is to install one of these kits.
17:15So we're going to mount a bunch of this stuff to the Jeep,
17:17make it look even better.
17:18The large 24-watt rock lights, we can either solid mount them
17:31or we can mount them magnetically as well so we can move them around the ride.
17:35And the best thing is, is all the lights are covered with a 25-year,
17:40we break it, they replace it warranty.
17:42So to see what our lights looked like, I simply hooked it up to my jump box,
18:04but one other thing that I added was this JK to JL conversion grille on the front of the Jeep.
18:09I really think this definitely changes the look of these JKs.
18:12It basically gives it that modern Jeep look, but it basically fits right in.
18:15I got the carbon fiber once, I think it looks super duper cool.
18:18So since we just tested the light with jump box,
18:20obviously we did that because there's no battery underneath the hood.
18:23That's what we have to deal with next.
18:24And the problem is we cut out all of the stuff that holds the battery in place,
18:28but we have a solution for that.
18:31We're just full of solutions today.
18:33There is a solution for that.
18:36Because we put this 6.4 Hemi underneath the hood
18:39and then, of course, had to remove all the inner structure from the JK to make room for our coilovers.
18:45We really don't have anything to hold up.
18:47This right here, often referred to as a FICM,
18:49so it's basically the fuse block and basically everything has to do with the vehicle.
18:53And then from the factory, there was a battery box right here.
18:56So we've got to find a way to hold the battery.
18:58So our suspension kit also included this item right here.
19:01This is a battery box that will replace all the plastic stuff that was in there.
19:04So it's going to bolt on to the firewall and this inner structure right here,
19:09and it's going to allow us to mount a battery here.
19:10And then the fuse block is going to index off these little tabs right here,
19:15solving all of our problems.
19:30Boom.
19:30As we finish up this Jeep, one of the final things that you do to any project
19:35is obviously add fluids to everything.
19:38And when we add those fluids, we're going to be adding Hotshot Secrets FR3 Friction Reducer.
19:45And we're going to be adding this anywhere we add gear oil, engine oil, or power steering fluid.
19:50What the FR3 does is it uses nanotechnology to increase the actual lubricity
19:55and reduce friction inside those key areas.
19:59Studies have shown a 43% reduction in wear when FR3 was added to the oil.
20:06Each one of these bottles treats up to 11 quarts of fluid.
20:11So one bottle will be more than enough to take care of our engine,
20:15front and rear differential, and our transfer case.
20:18And FR3 claims that this will increase our fuel economy and horsepower by up to 5%.
20:24So today we have our JK body married back to the chassis.
20:41Now our plan here from the very beginning was to basically combine a rock bouncer with a modern day Jeep.
20:47So you get that comforts inside the vehicle with the ultimate throwdown suspension underneath.
20:52And I think we have done exactly that.
20:55Because we were able to use this Jeep JK as the base of the vehicle,
20:59now inside we have beautiful rubber floor.
21:02We have that huge infotainment system and a comfortable interior that you're going to want to be in on the trail all day long.
21:09But at the same time, we have huge power underneath the hood thanks to our 6.4 Hemi.
21:14Monster 42-inch tall tires.
21:16Huge amounts of suspension travel with a pair of bomb-proof axles with a set of axle shafts that are as large as my head.
21:24So I think this thing is ready to tackle the trails and still drive down the highway
21:29and maybe go get a milkshake occasionally if you want to.
21:32It's the perfect vehicle at this point.
21:34Perfect vehicle.
21:36We're obviously not done.
21:36I have to put seats in it and a couple other things, but we'll do that next.
