00:00Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is urging federal agents to pause operations on Halloween in Chicago.
00:15Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says that won't happen.
00:19No, we're absolutely not willing to put on pause any work that we will do to keep communities safe.
00:24OK. Pritzker's request followed a neighborhood incident ahead of a Halloween parade in which a chemical agent was deployed.
00:33Residents said some children were affected.
00:36He's urging a one-day cooling-off period while crowds of families are out.
00:40DHS says the mission continues.
00:42Noem points to arrests under Operation Midway Blitz, saying ICE, CBP and state partners have taken more than 3,000 people into custody,
00:52including suspects in violent crimes.
00:55A DHS spokesperson says agents are not targeting schools, hospitals, or churches,
01:00and that people here legally and not breaking other laws, quote, have nothing to fear.
01:05There is short-term court oversight.
01:07A federal judge has ordered Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino to appear in court weekdays through November 5th
01:14to provide daily updates on operations in and around Chicago.
01:17Now, that means as Halloween events unfold, the court will be getting a running log of what DHS is doing and where.
01:25So, you're hearing two messages.
01:27One from Pritzker saying, protect kids and families from confrontations.
01:32They deserve to spend Halloween without fear.
01:35And another from Noem.
01:36Keep enforcement on bringing criminals to justice and out on the streets in full force to keep communities safe.
01:43Both sides say safety is the goal.
01:46Noem prioritizes continued arrest.
01:48Pritzker wants a holiday pause and tighter guardrails around family events.
