00:00pretty cool bluegrass hall of fame owensboro sweet spot love coming to owensboro
00:11welcome to sam's garage presented by nh oil undercoating
00:30this week on sam's garage we're pushing craft grit and know-how to the limit
00:53first 135 classic cars take on the great race fighting heat time and terrain on a nine-day
01:01rally of endurance and grit then we dive deeper into the heart of the event where teamwork and
01:07timing down to the second separate the great from the good back at southfield classics we head to
01:13their custom upholstery shop where every stitch and detail turns vintage style into modern luxury
01:19and finally we fine-tune lacy's civic type r lower wider and ready to dominate the street
01:26we have 135 plus cars in the great race checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance and
01:37so the goal is you're going to stay on target from start to finish it's like family to me so keeping
01:42it maintained keeping it running hard it's a complete family member it's an experience all the workers all
01:48the towns that have been welcoming us winning an ace in the great race is just it's one of the
01:53things that just lifts you up were we on time and everybody else was wrong were they on time and we
01:58were wrong i guess we'll find out tonight this is the great race from roadside fixes to hometown pride
02:05teams battle the elements the clock and the road itself on a nine-day journey of endurance
02:10precision and pure passion i want to say thank you to all our sponsors that make the great race
02:17filming possible for you all to enjoy at home one of them being dan from rogo fastener not only did
02:23he attend the great race but he was also sort of a support crew for everybody last year because his
02:28vehicle was equipped with everything that he sold in his company to help you in the field and he was
02:34able to furnish me with a cooler because without the cooler ice and water we would not make it through
02:39the day it's 100 degrees in this car and we're going like 300 miles every day so i want to thank him
02:44for that and dan thank you for my cup my insulated cup i went the first two days without the ice in
02:50the water and i'm like you know what i've got this cup that dan gave me from rogo fastener let's go
02:54ahead and use it yesterday all day i had ice cold water we all break down all the time that's why he's
03:00giving me a little packet with an orange vest so that just in case something happens to us on the
03:04side of the road we're totally safe because you can see us from a distance so i want to say thank
03:09you to dan and all the crew at rogo fastener
03:11we're going to have a solid heat index today of well over 100 about they said up to 110
03:21usually the heat in the car almost constantly 100 we put some thermometers in there so
03:27the thing today is going to be hydrate hydrate hydrate keep focus we're looking forward to a great day
03:34the weather looks good other than the heat we've got a big heat dome on us we'll wind up in owensboro
03:40kentucky tonight and that's where we started last year it's a beautiful town looking forward to
03:44getting there you know everybody has problems on this leg well on this race right you know we got
03:50mechanical failures we got cooling systems failing a bunch of stuff see on this nissan i got this screw
03:57in the passenger mirror that's loose so i'm just going to simply tighten it so i can put it back on
04:03we're not going to have a mirror on the passenger side our starting position i drew is 114 for
04:09tomorrow a little later start than i like but it'll work just fine we'll have a little more heat in the
04:14day now i'll sit down and start going through all of our instructions making sure we know exactly what
04:20we're doing it's a little cool this morning i think this afternoon it's going to be hot i expect
04:24inside the cockpit about 100 degrees all day long so should be a good race like i said my only job
04:31is to drive the car and do as this guy tells me only for the period that we're actually in the car
04:35let's go talk about the atomic clock every morning we have to set our time wise clock to the atomic
04:43clock because this is our go-to without this being on point nothing we do all day will be on point and
04:49when you're talking about seconds you want to make sure everything is accurate so every morning there's
04:55an atomic clock right here on a vehicle at the beginning portion of the hotels this is the atomic
05:01clock especially this one right here it beeps every time it gets to zero we just come it just dinged
05:07right so every morning i come over and i set my watch to this and the last four days my seiko has been
05:14dead on doug also does his watch but also the time wise clock to the atomic clock that way we're on
05:20point there's no discrepancies and if we make an ace it's going to be per this clock that the great
05:26race uses so this is very important we do it every morning no matter what then after this we're going
05:31to get in the car and go to our lunch stop which is effington illinois sam's garage is presented by nhou
05:48brought to you by the following companies
06:18welcome back to sam's garage presented by nh oil undercoating
06:28the great race runs on precision passion and perfect timing from setting clocks to the second
06:33to tackling rain trains and back roads every checkpoint is a test of focus and teamwork
06:39proof that in this rally every second counts the great race is brought to you by rod in supply we
06:48don't just sell them we race them it takes a lot of people to put on the great race we've got
06:54hundreds of volunteers that come along with us every year to do the stops lunch stop and night dinner stop
07:02separate crews set up for lunch and dinner when the lunch crew's done they're tearing down while
07:09the dinner crew is setting up jason and i as the announcers we have to head to the lunch stop we get
07:15there about the time that the inflatables everything's getting set up do a mic test figure out where
07:20we're going to go as far as what we're talking about making sure we've got the cards in place jenny's
07:25there with us helping us out and then we do the whole program about two hours worth of talking about
07:31the cars the drivers sharing some stories interacting with the crowd trying to explain to them get them to
07:36understand better about how the race actually works about three quarters of the way through depending on
07:40how long it takes to get to dinner jason's needs to split out he's got to get to the dinner stop
07:45and then get it set up make sure it's ready jenny and i are finishing up the lunch stop
07:50and then we take off and head out as soon as that last car comes in and the checkpoint workers come in
07:55tell us we no more cars for lunch then we're splitting off heading to the night stop as well
07:59hopefully we can get there about the same time the first car comes in and then we do the whole thing
08:04again talking about all the cars and the families that it takes all the support team that it takes
08:10to put this in a lot of amazing teams that participate throughout the great race and some really cool
08:15family stories awesome bridge we went across a toll road private bridge that's at least 100 years old
08:26you'll see it on sam's garage you don't want to miss that shot
08:29it was a day it was a very very testing day we had four time allowances because a train messed us
08:39up for 20 minutes a torque tube all original style stuff electronic ignition and aluminum radiator with
08:47electric fuel pump but that's about as wild as it gets we put some disc brakes on it off of like a
08:52more modern f-150 it's got tube chocks front and rear which originally wouldn't have had so mostly just
08:58safety updates connor and i built the motor about two years ago tested on the dyno it's like 102
09:04horsepower so not a lot but it's what it's got enough for what we need to do so this car has a
09:09run four years now a major rebuild after last year and then brand new torque tube yeah so yeah it's
09:15handling well so far i mean it's got last year's race on the rebuild and just this year on the torque
09:21tube but it's going well all right so last night we're talking about overheating conditions and we're
09:27trying to you know school him teach him he was not having it he's running ac we're like you know
09:31what for one day don't run his ac and see what happens like no we're not going to do that and
09:35he fixed it himself and tell everyone why rob sometimes when things are intermittent you just
09:39have to run them till they fail to figure out what it is and it always comes down to a little simple
09:43thing and it's usually the fuse so after we replaced this our fans started working more consistently
09:50cooling the motor down we're running some pretty hot temps water shooting out the
09:55the vents so we got her cooled down because of this we're ready to run a hot day tomorrow boy do
10:00we run it hot today yeah i saw the windows were down so the question is you ran it today with the windows
10:06down did it get hot it did it did did not fix our problem what you know believe it was not running the
10:12ac was the problem the problem was this little thing running the fans needle nose vice grips and cramp
10:19them across the terminals there and i shorted out we got cool air going again that's a good way
10:24of burning the car down made it to the auto part started to get a new one we didn't burn it down
10:28double check where our fire extinguisher was just to make sure
10:45we went to our chemist and we said we'd like to make this more effective peppermint oil what else can we
10:50do so we play off the three senses the touch the fear and the smell and so the other ingredient is
10:58not noticeable by the nose but it is a predatory scent so they think there is a cat or something in
11:04the area we think it's pretty effective we we did some independent laboratory testing and we ran the
11:10test twice like i did it the first time and i said okay let's try setting up different and this test is
11:16available and he wants to see it i'll give you the whole test result but in an industry where 70
11:21percent is is considered like that's primo the benchmark for being for making a successful product
11:29my first test was 91 then i changed it and i got 92 and i said how come how come when you get 100 and he
11:37goes you really add 100 when you're in the 90s hey if you're going to be out there rust proofing it's an
11:41extra bonus we actually now we infuse all of our oils with mouse out so if you buy the black the clear
11:48you're going to get mouse out welcome back to more sam's garage presented by nhou
12:04we are inside the shop within the shop southfield classics custom upholstery division
12:09from hand-stitched seats to fully integrated tech every detail is built in-house for luxury
12:15comfort and quality classic craftsmanship meets modern perfection
12:21all right so this is the shop that no shop has right dan that's absolutely correct this is the
12:27upholstery shop it's within southfield classics and this is where all the magic happens when it
12:32comes to the interior of the car and you guys heard me say this a thousand times no matter what the car is
12:37like no matter how beautiful it is you live on the inside so you want to make sure that everything
12:41is to your liking on the inside and i just went to auburn indiana and i just found out about dusenbergs
12:46and i had no idea that the chassis were all built in two years and that you put the body on it same
12:51thing here at southfield correct so and as you know body by fisher that's what fisher was a body company
12:57so what we kind of do here is that bespoke sort of idea and that process where as you've seen we do the cabs
13:03separately and individually by hand but it comes back back to the upholstery the interiors part of
13:08it like he says you live in the interior so for the most part when you're riding you want it to
13:12feel comfortable and feel like you like it we use all high-end quality leathers we design our interiors
13:18in-house my background was in upholstery my father was an upholster before me so i kind of take all of
13:24those and processes and brought them to the new southfield classics and sc31t we draw everything out by
13:31hand we stitch everything out on our machines and you guys you can completely customize your truck
13:35to your needs you can pick out the color the color of the interior you pick out your accents you could
13:39pick out your wheels your suspension the right height all that stuff basically every every aspect of it
13:44you can come in you sit down with us and we we kind of get a game plan of how we want to move forward
13:50what we try to do is a lot of high-end materials to give them that comfort and when you look at the
13:55interior of those trucks out there they look so oem and it's all done by hand from scratch all done by
14:02hand from scratch we pattern our own seats seat covers like i said i'm kind of old school that's
14:07what i learned on so i kind of do it the old way the guys that would have in-house that we're training
14:13we we do it the old way and that's how you control your quality right that's how you control the time
14:19that it takes to spit something out is because it's all right here under one roof that's right
14:25it's all about quality control and controlling the time frames and let me tell you the most impressive
14:29part about this entire deal is the fact that you can have what you're talking about right now there
14:34are others out there who build hot rods in the same manner but it takes five years if you're lucky
14:40and you guys are going to be able to spit them out in six months with the same quality the same quality
14:44that's the key i think the way that we've set up our our line and how we're building the actual
14:48process on the cars and all the processes we're putting into place we should be able to put them
14:53out every six months at a super super high quality this is basically the upholstery is the last part
14:58of the job right it's the it's the last thing that goes in it's one of the most important like we just
15:02talked about but it is the last thing that goes in but we try to make sure that it's the same quality
15:06as anything we can go on the outside or under the room now within that interior my do i have the option of a
15:11power window or not yeah so you got power windows they all come standard with power door locks it
15:16has alarm systems already pre pre-installed for every vehicle uh ac i noticed that you have a
15:23screen in the middle of the dash that's going to be basically your information screen for all your ev
15:28or high voltage and it's also android uh and apple compatible okay so that is a sound system that is
15:33your sound system it actually works through that what we call the gooey which is our head unit that is
15:38so cool because i can't tell you how cool it is to see these southfield classics and what it takes
15:43to make a vehicle i can't wait to show you guys as we get further into the season we're going to start
15:48to assemble a vehicle so you guys to see what it takes to make one this is very cool next week we're
15:53going to be checking out the beginnings of the assembly
15:56sam's garage is presented by nh oil undercoating is brought to you by the following companies
16:26this week we're dialing in the stance on lacy civic type r lowering it 0.8 inches and
16:56widening the track with 20 millimeter spacers it's precision performance and pure style
17:02turning championship white into track ready perfection
17:08all right so this is the week that we take this beautiful championship white civic type r
17:13and lower it we're only going to lower it 0.8 of an inch front and rear and we're going to widen
17:17the stance with spacers about 20 millimeters it's going to look really good complementing the horsepower
17:22that we just upgraded on the car so the rear is really easy you remove that lower control arm bolt
17:34you remove the bolt that holds the sway bar in place and this thing will just come down r and r the spring
17:40and it goes right back up you will have to use a dead man or a jack depending on if you're on a rack
17:44or on the ground to put this back up and that's pretty much it very easy but don't forget to put the
17:50sway bar bolts back in don't forget to remove them or you will not be able to swing that control arm down
17:56that makes it nice and easy it calls for 1.2 hours for the rear 4.7 for the front you're going to
18:01require almost every bit of that 4.7 in the front if it's the first time
18:07all right so the rear is pretty easy right they've separated the spring from the shock
18:11so you just drop down the lower control arm r and r of the spring easy the front because it's a
18:16race car it's a lot more difficult than the past so what you guys want to do is make sure that the
18:22three bolts up top are the last bolts you remove because it's going to hold the spring and the shock
18:27assembly in place there is electronic connector on the shock you have to remove it don't forget
18:32you do have to remove the abs sensor and all the connectors and just have them on the side you don't
18:37want to damage that wire because it'll cost you a big sensor that's expensive whenever you guys are doing
18:42this a coal spring or anything like that you got to remove the sway bar that gives the suspension
18:46room to go up and down so the backing plate will have to be removed so that you can get to the
18:51two 19 millimeter bolts that are holding the knuckle to the lower control arm
19:04then when you're doing the spring r and r you do have to use a compressor to remove the spring but
19:08the new h and r spring is pretty compressed already it doesn't have as much rate as this does so
19:14therefore you can sandwich it together without the compressor h and r does such a good job that the
19:19rubber insulators that are from the factory they go back onto the new spring and they get back into the
19:25orientation of the lower and the upper so it's pretty hard to mess that up but still make your line
19:31because that's what you're supposed to do the last thing we're going to install is going to be this
19:46h and r this looks like a one inch spacer it's probably 20 millimeters this is a nice spacer it's
19:51centered for the hub it's also got tapered holes for the nuts so once you install it it's going to
19:57be completely centered you want to make sure there's nothing behind it that's going to give us
20:01the stance that we're looking for one inch further track it's going to bring the tires flush with the
20:06fender to make it look a lot more aggressive of course i want to say i'm glad you decided to come
20:11to work yeah it's pretty good she's not feeling very good well she came just in time because this
20:16was the worst suspension job i've done especially on a honda that was crazy it's going to take every bit
20:21of 4.7 hours on the front actually it didn't take about two so but it calls for 4.7 it looks so good
20:27though look at it right yeah looks great the extra width of the wheels lined up with the fenders
20:31the subtle drop 0.8 of an inch so it looks good doesn't it looks great i think she's going to love
20:36it next thing we're going to do is go down and drive it make sure everything is good breaking the
20:40suspension but i think lacy's going to be very happy i think so too i think it's time to go buy one
20:45myself huh be sure to check out sam's garage on these other media platforms send us questions and
20:57feedback to info at samsgaragetv.com from vintage rallies to custom cabins and today's street machines
21:06sam's garage lights up every lane of car culture thanks for watching and whether it's old school or
21:12next gen keep it about skill style and speed
