00:00Riyad, let's start with you. Who are the main military factions involved in this ongoing unrest that we are seeing in Sudan?
00:10Well, for several years now, for the past two or three years, we've had the armed forces and the RSF.
00:18The RSF and armed forces jointly were part of the movement, the coup d'etat, that toppled the previous president, Omar Bashir.
00:34RSF originally was born out of militias in the area of Darfur.
00:40The former regime had employed warlords over there to help in subjecting, subduing uprisings in that part as far back as 2003.
00:56So the genocide and atrocities in that part of Sudan is not something new.
01:01It did not start just a few weeks ago. This has been ongoing since 2003.
01:06Then, again, recurred about 2015.
01:11I was amazed at the number of studies and researches and peer-reviewed journals about the genocide and atrocities committed in that particular region for the past 20 years.
01:27And it's still the same people, the RSF that were previously militias, the commander, General Dugalo, known as Hamity, was also a warlord.
01:45And he emerged and rose to power, and he was given a military title, made a general, as a reward for his contributions and subduing the revolt or the uprising in that part.
02:06And we've been seeing this, it's mostly like ethnic between Arab and the African tribes down there.
02:16And as in most civil wars, this one has been like, has seen a lot of ethnic cleansing, genocide as one part is trying to force the other group out of this whole region.
02:34And that has been, that's led to the displacement of millions of people.
