00:00Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is urging federal agents to pause operations on Halloween in
00:13Chicago. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says that won't happen.
00:19No, we're absolutely not willing to put on pause any work that we will do to keep communities safe.
00:24Pritzker's request followed a neighborhood incident ahead of a Halloween parade in which
00:31a chemical agent was deployed. Residents said some children were affected. He's urging a one-day
00:37cooling-off period while crowds of families are out. DHS says the mission continues.
00:43Noem points to arrests under Operation Midway Blitz, saying ICE, CBP and state partners have
00:49taken more than 3,000 people into custody, including suspects in violent crimes. A DHS
00:55spokesperson says agents are not targeting schools, hospitals, or churches, and that people here
01:01legally and not breaking other laws, quote, have nothing to fear. There is short-term court oversight.
01:07A federal judge has ordered Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino to appear in court weekdays through
01:13November 5th to provide daily updates on operations in and around Chicago. Now, that means as Halloween
01:19events unfold, the court will be getting a running log of what DHS is doing and where.
01:25So, you're hearing two messages. One from Pritzker, saying, protect kids and families from
01:30confrontations. They deserve to spend Halloween without fear. And another from Noem, keep enforcement
01:37on bringing criminals to justice and out on the streets in full force to keep communities safe.
01:43Both sides say safety is the goal. Noem prioritizes continued arrest. Pritzker wants a holiday pause
01:50and tighter guardrails around family events. For Straight Arrow News, I'm Lauren Keenan.
