00:00Welcome to the video from the Car Magazine Tuning Blog.
00:03Today, everything revolves around a true icon of the off-road vehicle world,
00:08the classic Range Rover, also known as the Range Rover Classic.
00:13First officially introduced on June 17, 1970,
00:17this model set completely new standards with its combination of permanent all-wheel drive,
00:22coil spring suspension and a powerful 3.5 LV8 engine.
00:25The Range Rover was not only capable of off-roading, but also offered comfort,
00:33which quickly made it the model for many other luxury off-road vehicles,
00:37including the Monteverdi Safari and the Fial Oasis.
00:43Although the Jeep Wagoner with a similar engine concept was already available earlier,
00:47it had significantly less modern technology, such as the outdated leaf spring suspension.
00:52The design of the Range Rover was technically sophisticated and robust.
00:58A box frame served as the basis, on which a steel frame with light metal paneling was mounted.
01:05The tailgate was divided horizontally and equipped with pneumatic support as standard.
01:12The vehicle was already equipped X-Works with five seat belts and a modern three-phase alternator.
01:17The axles were fitted with coil springs and guided by trailing arms,
01:22with a panhard rod at the front and a central swing arm with hydromat at the rear contributing to leveling.
01:30Originally designed as a three-door model, a five-door version remained a customer request for a long time.
01:35Between 1980 and 1982, the Swiss sports car manufacturer Monteverdi finally took on this task and developed a five-door version on behalf of British Leyland.
01:50A total of only 167 vehicles were produced, many of which remained in Switzerland.
01:55Two vehicles even found their way into the fleet of the British royal family.
02:02To this day, it is unclear whether the conversions were carried out in the Monteverdi workshop in basis or in an Italian coachbuilder such as Carrosseria Fasor.
02:13From August 1981, Range Rover finally manufactured the five-door version itself,
02:18with key elements from the Monteverdi conversion being adopted.
02:21Over the years, the Range Rover was continuously developed further.
02:28In October 1985, it received a subtle visual and technical overhaul, including modern intake manifold injection.
02:37In November 1988, the displacement of the V8 engine was increased from 3.5 to 3.9 L.
02:44In September 1992, the Range Rover LSE was introduced, a revised version.
02:54The body was extended by 20 centimeters, the engine was enlarged to 4.2 L and the vehicle was given comfortable air suspension.
03:03Despite its elegant and shock-absorbing appearance, the Range Rover Classic remained a true off-road vehicle.
03:09With its long suspension travel, robust construction and high ground clearance, it also impressed off-road.
03:18The high-torque Rover V8 with a displacement of 3.9 L produces around 173 horsepower at 4,500 revolutions per minute.
03:28In combination with the longitudinal differential lock and the gear reduction, this ensures impressive traction, even on difficult surfaces.
03:35The wheelbase was 2.5 meters, the length was around 4.3 meters, the width was around 1.9 meters and the height was around 1.8 meters.
03:50Ideal dimensions for a vehicle that was to shine equally on the road and off-road.
