00:00In the year 2000, we were introduced to Wolverine, Professor Xavier and Magneto, with the first X-May.
00:06This whole merry band returned three years later with a second album, Bigger and Better,
00:11and lots of little secrets and details tucked away in the pockets. Relax, we've unearthed them for you.
00:16Small details, most of which are major references to the universe of the original comics,
00:20and especially to characters that will reappear later in the franchise.
00:23A good number of these characters are recognizable when Mystique searches William Stryker's computer right here.
00:29Fans will have recognized, among others, Rémi Lebeau, alias Gambit, who will be seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
00:36Kenyucho Arada, aka the Silver Samurai from Wolverine 2, or the Maximoffs, namely Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver,
00:43which we will see together again in Avengers 2, when Quicksilver comes for his solo jog in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
00:49On another screen, we also noticed folders with familiar names.
00:52Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, the villain Omega Red, the infamous Weapon X program that transformed Wolverine,
00:59the Wide Awake project which will bring the Sentinels, or even iconic X-Men locations like Muir Island.
01:05We're not going to go through them all, but as you've probably gathered, this computer is a real goldmine for fans.
01:10And if you're interested, feel free to pause the image to recognize the rest of the names.
01:14In the vein of subtle nods to friends, we can see in this scene at the Alkali Lake base,
01:19several radios, including this one on the right, a reference to the character from Ark Angel, who is equipped with El Metallic.
01:25And earlier in the film, it is during a televised debate that we can recognize Dr. Hank McCoy, aka Beast,
01:31and we can hear that he is facing Dr. Sebastian Shaw, who will be the main villain in X-Men First Class.
01:37Finally, the film also marks Jean Grey's transformation into Phoenix.
01:40one of the most powerful mutants in the X-Men universe, whom we will discover in their third adventure.
01:45And throughout X-Men 2, lots of little details give clues about the evolution of the mutant.
01:50In this church scene, the most observant will have noticed a phoenix on the back of his jacket.
01:56a bird that we will also see later on Bobby's brother's t-shirt.
02:00Another clue is when Jean uses her powers at the end, and golden flames appear around her and in her eyes.
02:05just as one can discern, just before the end credits, the silhouette of what looks like a phoenix passing over him.
02:10It was also discovered that the majority of the X-Men mansion's designs were reused from the first film.
02:15or that the address and inscriptions visible on the residence plaque are far from innocuous.
02:19The school is located at Gremalkin Lane, Salem Center,
02:23Gremalkin being the name of the witches' cat in William Shakespeare's Macbeth,
02:27when Salem was the site of numerous trials and the murder of women who were thought to be witches in the 17th century because of their alleged power.
02:34All of this is like a small metaphor for the mutants in the film, rather subtle.
02:37Germanophiles will have understood Diablo when he speaks German in the church.
02:41and where he says, "Come out, I am the servant of the devil, I am the product of evil,"
02:45when film buffs recognize that Magneto's music in his prison at the beginning
02:48is the same classical music that Hannibal Lecter listens to in his cell in the cult classic film *The Silence of the Lambs*.
02:54Another little cinematic nod, with the distinctive sound Cerebro makes when attacking mutants and then humans,
02:59which is borrowed from the 1954 film "The Monsters Attack the City",
03:03where, when Striker enters his Cerebro 2, the keys on the keypad discreetly emit the same notes
03:08As for the famous music from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, we'll let you check it out.
03:12As for cameos, we can see director Bryan Singer showing his face on the computer screen.
03:17then, in the flesh, pushing Professor Xavier right there.
03:21when the two screenwriters of the film, Michael Doherty and Dan Harris,
03:24They portray doctors who are put under pressure in Wolverine's flashback.
03:27The rest of the team makes a brief appearance in the list of Magneto's guards visible here.
03:32where, in addition to finding the names of the two screenwriters, we can also read the names of several producers.
03:36Finally, it was noted that despite its relatively important role,
03:39Actress Kelly Yu only speaks one short line throughout the entire film.
03:43that the book Magneto is reading at the beginning, The Once and Future King,
03:46is the same one Xavier talks about to his students at the end.
03:48or that Jim Gray's final monologue is also the same as Professor Xavier's
03:52at the very beginning of the first X-Men, but of course, you noticed that.
03:56Two movies, and it's still just as much of a mess among the mutants.
03:58A third installment in the X-Men saga was therefore necessary to settle the score.
04:02before the big spring cleaning of X-Men: First Class.
04:05The grand finale of an original trilogy is generous with little secrets, details, and spoilers.
04:10With a budget of $210 million,
04:12X-Men: The Last Stand was, at the time, the most expensive film in the history of cinema.
04:17A film that spares no expense, then, right from the opening credits.
04:20where we can see that the Marvel logo is composed entirely of images taken from original comics,
04:25all having a connection to the story that will follow.
04:28This third installment also marks the first time that all members of the original 1963 X-Men team,
04:33namely Beast, Cyclops, Phoenix, Angel, Iceman and Professor X
04:38finally appear in the same film.
04:40Fans of the comic book adventures will recognize the famous maneuver known as the Fastball Special.
04:44a technique consisting of Colossus launching Wolverine into the air at full speed for more damage.
04:49But also that the Golden Gate Bridge sequence, torn apart by Magneto,
04:53taken straight from the New X-Men comic book issue #147,
04:56where the character did the same with the Brooklyn Bridge.
04:59The design of the tombs of Cyclops, Jim Gray, and Professor Xavier is shown here.
05:03It echoes that of the Days of Future Past comics.
05:06and the number that can be read right there on the vaccine box
05:09is a nod to one of the iconic X-Men illustrators, Jim Lee,
05:12who began his work with Uncanny X-Men issue 248, released in 1989.
05:18Rather, it was endured.
05:19Two other Marvel legends also make an appearance at the beginning of the film.
05:22Chris Claremont, one of the great writers of the X-Men,
05:25is the creator of the characters Gambit, Mystique, and Sabretooth, among others.
05:29and the man with the lawnmower right there,
05:30when everyone will of course recognize Stanley, creator of the X-Men, and his garden hose.
05:35We also noted the presence of the head of a sentinel robot at the beginning,
05:38which will become one of the central threats in X-Men: Days of Future Past,
05:41when the film introduces us to a character named Trask,
05:43a character who was the very origin of the Sentinels,
05:46and who will ultimately be portrayed by Peter Dinklage in the 2014 film.
05:50This X-Men: The Last Stand definitely likes to switch roles.
05:53since it marks the third time in three films
05:55that the character of Kitty Pryde is played by a different actress.
05:58In the first game, she had the features of Semelakay,
06:01before taking on Kathy Stewart's roles in X-Men 2,
06:04and then to be portrayed by Ellen Page from this third film onwards.
06:07Finally, despite its rather crucial importance in the story of this first X-Men trilogy,
06:11and its prominent placement on the various film posters,
06:13It has been calculated that the character of Cyclops appears for a total of only 4 minutes and 40 seconds.
