Kia lässt Blinde hören, was andere sehen – mit KI und Sound. Mit dem Projekt Kia Soundscapes verwandelt der Autohersteller Landschaften in Klanglandschaften. Visuell beeinträchtigte Menschen können so während der Fahrt fühlen und hören, was andere nur sehen – durch individuell komponierte Klänge für Bäume, Berge oder Wasser.
Die Technologie basiert auf künstlicher Intelligenz und nutzt die Sensoren des Fahrzeugs, um die Umgebung zu erkennen und in passende Töne zu übersetzen. Gemeinsam mit zwei blinden Teilnehmern testete Kia das System in der vollelektrischen EV9 – mit emotionalen Ergebnissen.
Ein kreativer Ansatz für mehr Inklusion und Barrierefreiheit im Auto der Zukunft.

01:07Since childhood, I've always struggled with my vision.
01:10But it wasn't until my mid-30s, in the middle of raising my children,
01:14that I was suddenly diagnosed with a rare inherited genetic eye condition
01:20called Cone Rod Dystrophy.
01:23I fell into severe depression for many years.
01:27But now, every moment counts.
01:30When I heard that a car with all its sensors could tell me what the landscape sounds like,
01:37I was so confused.
01:39But you know what?
01:40I'm ready.
01:41I want to see the unfolding of the landscape and what the world can bring to me.
01:45When people cannot rely on sight, the brain needs to adapt, so it rewires itself.
01:58That's why blind individuals process audio more deeply.
02:02It becomes the way they see.
02:06Oh wow, I can feel the depth.
02:11The challenge in this project was to use the Advanced Driver Assistance System cameras
02:15to scan every object on the road and turn these objects into sounds.
02:21But I can also hear some flutes which are light and dainty and they represent the shrubs, the trees.
02:31It feels so good.
02:33The car creates a different sound for the different elements.
02:36Just like for these trees.
02:39Whenever we see trees on the left side of the road, you hear flutes and oboes there.
02:48Whenever the car goes faster, the more dynamic the music gets.
02:53And if the landscape changes, the music changes.
02:58Here we go.
02:59It's such an incredible feeling.
03:05The music is translating not only what I'm feeling, but what the landscape is like.
03:13And what I'm navigating through and what I'm experiencing.
03:18It reminds me of when I was a kid and we would go on road trips with my parents.
03:23I could feel the sound of vastness and then also little sounds of shrubbery that are dotting the landscape.
03:35I feel like I'm driving even though I can't drive.
03:38But it's giving me that experience back of having that freedom.
03:43The music is telling me that we're heading towards an area that is more flat and dry grass.
04:00Feels like we're at the bottom of the valley.
04:03It's really emotional right now.
04:05When I heard for the first time that I would come here for this crazy experiment, I thought I couldn't quite understand it.
04:24I couldn't quite rationalize it in my head.
04:27But I was so curious to see how this could possibly be.
04:31How could this possibly work?
04:32I used to think that with no longer being able to drive, I lost something.
04:38But I realized I could have a true passenger experience.
04:43I believe absolutely that this experiment can inspire so many people to get out there and enjoy the landscape through sound.
04:54Can you imagine how people can experience the world in a more immersive state and really appreciate each single moment?
05:03I'm inspired by so many things in nature. It lets me know how powerless we are.
05:15Music was my first real language. I learned to play instruments before I could talk or walk.
05:32Music is all about harmony and nature is all about harmony. So perhaps through music I can experience the harmony that is nature.
05:44I hear a mountain as a giant orchestra with percussion and cymbals and a trumpet on the top.

05:58I would imagine every blind person like myself experiences the road through the eyes of the people around you.
06:13What makes me inspired about this project is that it would be wonderful to really experience through sound what other people experience through sight as they travel.

06:55I can tell that there's a really really massive rock wall very close to us.

07:08For example, the big rocks.
07:11They are solid and massive and they also call for these low tones.
07:20And they pass left and right according to where they are.
07:26It's a really really beautiful feeling. It's sunny all around.
07:45I'm telling you at least that the topography is changing in a very dramatic way which is really really great for someone who can't see it.
07:55I can't see it.
08:05It sounds beautiful. So peaceful.
08:12It sounds like a really really large lake.
08:15It sounds like it would be amazing to swim on such a bright day.
08:25The music does a great job of changing the synesthesia between landscapes.
08:32They do a great job of illustrating how peaceful all of this is through sound.
08:38It's really terrific.
08:41I think the experience was very inspiring.
09:00I could really enjoy being a passenger and experiencing a road trip from a much different angle and a much different perspective than I ever have before.
09:12The most unexpected part of the experiment was to understand how a mountain on one side of a lake of a car and a lake on the other can make for such a beautiful harmony.
09:25Two things that have nothing in common but yet need each other.
09:30That's what music is and that's what life is and that's why there's harmony everywhere.
09:36And I got to experience that from a very different perspective than I ever have before.
