00:00Ahead of Guy Fawkes Night, authorities are reminding people across the UK to celebrate safely, and legally.
00:07While Bonfire Night can be a time of fun and fireworks, strict rules are in place to protect both people and wildlife, and to help prevent noise and nuisance.
00:18The annual event dates back to 1605, when Guy Fawkes' attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament, known as the Gunpowder Plot, failed.
00:27For anyone planning a display this year, there are clear laws about when fireworks can be used.
00:33It's illegal to set them off between 11pm and 7am on most days.
00:38On Bonfire Night, that restriction is extended. Fireworks can legally be used from 7am until midnight.
00:45Different hours apply on certain other celebrations, including New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year.
00:51You must be 18 or over to buy fireworks, and it's against the law to set them off or throw them in the street or in other public places.
